Jesus's Hand of Power and Authority
The work of God’s Creation is indeed unfathomably ‘amazing, wonderful, awesome yet mysterious.’ This world that God created with His own hands has become evidence for revealing His Sovereignty and Power. That is why the Apostle Paul testified that God’s Divinity is contained in the things that He created. Through today’s message, let us examine together the power of God’s hand revealed through the work of His Creation and redemption.
I. Jesus’ hand of power and authority is the Hand of Creation.
This expression, the “Hand of God,” found in the Scripture denotes the “Living God, the God of Creation, and God who exists.” Like humans even use an expression “please lend me a hand” when they ask for help, God not only created everything under the universe with His own hands, but supervised the lives of the mankind, held them and guided them. Hence, our prayer should be a prayer to ask for His help by saying, “God, please hold onto us with your mighty right hand and guide us.” It is because the Hand of God brings death and life; sends poverty and wealth; humbles and exalts (1Sam 2:6-8). The Bible refers to the Hand of God as the Power of Creation. It is testified in Isa 48:12-13, “My own hand laid the foundations of the earth, and my right hand spread out the heavens; when I summon them, they all stand up together.” It is also written in Ps 102:25, “In the beginning, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands.” Moreover, the work of creating Adam and Eve was also the work that God performed with His hands. It was the Hand of God’s love that made the garment of skin for fallen Adam and Eve to wear when He evicted them from the Garden of Eden. It was God’s Hand of mighty power, authority and strength that saved the Israelites from 430 years of slavery in Egypt. As you can see, the Hand of God is the Hand that rules the mankind, conserves and leads them, and shows His providence. That is why it is the powerful hand that we can trust and rely on. In that Hand of God, there is authority and power; and the wealth and honor come from the LORD (1Chr 29:12). That is why David said in 2Sam 24:14, “Let us fall into the hands of the LORD and not into human hands.”
II. Jesus’ Hand of authority and power is also a Hand of judgment and punishment.
The Bible refers to an incident of how God buried the Egyptian soldiers in the water when the Israelites crossed the Red Sea as, “By the power of your arm, they will be still as a stone” (Exo 15:16). This denotes that the right hand of God is the hand of judgment and punishment. As you can see, the Bible records the right hand of God as the Hand of power and authority that demolishes the enemies and shows His glory (Ps 118:15-16). When the Apostle Paul was on his first missionary journey, there was a false prophet named ‘Bar-Jesus’ that interfered with his ministry. Immediately after the Apostle Paul cursed him by saying, “Now the hand of the Lord is against you. You are going to be blind for a time, not even able to see the light of the sun,” the mist and the darkness came over him. As you can see, the Hand of God is the Hand of power and authority that immediately executes judgments and punishments against those who confront the Word and the believers. We must never consider the Hand of God lightly. The Hand of God must accompany you at work and at home. When the Hand of God acts upon your home and workplace, the blessing of success and prosperity will be upon you. God cannot save us not because His arm is too short (Isa 59:1). It is because the sin is blocking between God and I (Jer 5:25). Thus, in order for God’s Hand of judgment to work within our lives to protect and guide us from the enemies, and bless us with salvation and power, we must always be thankful for the Hands of God and rely on Him.
III. The Hand of power and authority of Jesus is the hand that nurtures us.
If we look at Jn 20:1-8, we have no choice but to admire the meticulous actions taken in the grave by Jesus seen through the Apostle John. We must pay closer attention especially to Jn 20:7 that says, “He saw the strips of linen lying there, as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen.” This testifies the delicate Hand of Jesus that nurtures. Jesus is in the grave all by himself right now. The garments he wore were the clothing of suffering that were torn and stained with blood at the cross. If he were a layman, he would be busy to strip off these garments and escape from the grave; however, Jesus was different. Even though these bloody garments he wore showed the evidence of terrifying suffering, he folded them up neatly and placed them by themselves. It was likewise at the field of Bethsaida. After Jesus performed the miracle of 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish, he commanded, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted” (Jn 6:12). In his Word that urges us not to throw away even a small piece of crumb, we can also discover Jesus’ delicate hand of nurturance. Even though it may seem insignificant or vain that no one shows interest, Jesus always nurtured and took care of everything.
Conclusion
The Prophet Isaiah once said, “Before Him all the nations are nothing” (Isa 40:17), and also said, “Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket; they are regarded as dust on the scales; and He weighs the islands as though they were fine dust” (Isa 40:15). All these works of providence and Creation were fulfilled and orchestrated by the ‘Hands of God.’ I sincerely hope that all of you will rely on the Hand of God of Creation, power, authority and nurturance rather than rely arrogantly on your own power.
예수님의 권능의 손
하나님의 창조의 역사는 그야말로 ‘신묘막측’합니다. 하나님의 손으로 창조된 이 세계는 바로 하나님의 주권과 능력을 드러내는 증표가 되고 있습니다. 그래서 사도 바울은 하나님의 신성이 그 만드신 만물에 깃들어 있다고 증거하였던 것입니다. 오늘 말씀을 통해서, 창조와 구원의 역사에 나타난 하나님의 손의 능력에 대해 함께 살펴보도록 하겠습니다.
1. 예수님의 권능의 손은 창조의 손입니다.
‘하나님의 손’이란 성경의 표현은 살아 계신 하나님, 창조의 하나님, 존재하시는 하나님을 가리키는 말입니다. 사람들도 상대방에게 도움을 청할 때 ‘손 좀 빌립시다’라는 표현을 사용하듯, 하나님께서도 당신의 손으로 우주 만물을 창조하셨을 뿐 아니라 모든 인류의 삶을 주관하시며 붙잡아 주시고, 인도해 주십니다. 그러므로 우리의 기도는 “하나님, 당신의 권능의 오른손으로 붙잡아 주시고 인도해 주십시오” 하는 도움의 기도가 돼야 합니다. 하나님의 손은 우리를 살리기도 하시고, 망하게도 흥하게도, 낮게도 하시고, 높이기도 하시기 때문입니다(삼상 12:6-8).
성경은 하나님의 손을 가리켜 창조의 능력으로 표현하고 있습니다. 사 48:12-13 말씀을 보면, “내 손이 땅의 기초를 정하였고 내 오른손이 하늘에 폈나니 내가 부르면 천지가 일제히 서느니라”라고 증거하고 있습니다. 시 102:25에도 “주께서 옛적에 땅의 기초를 두셨사오며 하늘도 주의 손으로 지으신 바니이다”라고 하였습니다. 또한, 아담과 하와를 만드신 것도 하나님의 손으로 하신 역사입니다. 범죄한 아담과 하와를 에덴에서 추방하시며 가죽옷을 지어 입히신 것도 하나님의 사랑의 손이었습니다. 430년 동안의 애굽의 종살이에서 이스라엘을 구원해 주신 것도 하나님의 강한 권세와 능력의 손이었습니다. 이처럼 하나님의 손은 인류를 통치하시고, 보존하시고, 인도하시고, 섭리하시는 손입니다. 그렇기 때문에 우리가 믿고 의지할 만한 능력의 손이 되기도 합니다. 하나님의 손에 권세와 능력이 있고, 부와 귀가 주께로 말미암습니다(대상 29:12). 그래서 다윗은 “우리가 여호와의 손에 빠지고 사람의 손에 빠지지 않기를 원하노라”(삼하 24:14) 하였던 것입니다.
2. 예수님의 권능의 손은 심판과 징계의 손입니다.
이스라엘이 홍해를 건널 때 애굽의 군대를 수장시킨 사실을 가리켜 성경은 “주의 팔이 큼을 인하여 그들이 돌같이 고요하였사오니”(출 15:16)라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 이는 하나님의 오른손이 심판과 징계의 손임을 의미하는 것입니다. 이처럼 성경은 하나님의 오른손이야말로 당신의 영광을 나타내고 원수를 부수는 권능의 손이라고 기록하고 있습니다(시 118:15-16).
사도 바울이 제1차 전도 여행을 떠났을 때 ‘바예수’라는 거짓 선지자가 나타나서 온갖 방해를 일삼았습니다. 이때 사도 바울이 “주의 손이 네 위에 있으니 네가 소경이 되어 얼마 동안 해를 보지 못하리라”라고 그를 향해 저주하자마자, 즉시 안개와 어둠이 그를 덮었다고 말씀하고 있습니다.
이처럼 하나님의 손은 말씀을 대적하고 성도를 대적하는 무리를 향해 즉각적인 심판과 징계를 내리시는 권능의 손이기도 합니다. 이러한 하나님의 손을 절대 우습게 생각해서는 안 됩니다. 직장이나 가정에도 하나님의 손이 함께해 주셔야만 합니다. 하나님의 손이 힘써 주실 때 형통의 축복이 임하게 됩니다. 하나님의 손이 짧아서 우리를 구원하지 못하는 것이 아닙니다(사 59:1). 하나님과 나 사이를 죄가 가로막고 있기 때문입니다(렘 5:25). 그러므로 우리의 삶 가운데서 하나님의 심판의 손이 역사하여 원수로부터 보호와 인도, 구원과 능력의 축복을 받기 위해서는 늘 하나님의 손길을 감사하며 의뢰하는 자세를 가져야 합니다.
3. 예수님의 권능의 손은 보살피는 손입니다.
요 20:1-8 말씀을 보면, 우리는 사도 요한을 통해서 무덤 속에서 행하신 예수님의 세밀한 행동에 감탄하지 않을 수 없게 됩니다. 특별히 요 20:7에서 “또 머리를 쌌던 수건은 세마포와 함께 놓이지 않고 딴 곳에 개켜 있더라”라는 말씀에 주목할 필요가 있습니다. 이 말씀은 예수님의 섬세한 보살핌의 손을 증거해 주고 있습니다. 지금 예수님은 무덤 속에 홀로 계십니다. 그분이 입었던 옷들은 십자가에서 찢기고 피로 얼룩진 고통의 옷입니다. 여느 사람 같으면 훌훌 벗어 던지고 무덤을 빠져나가기에 바빴겠지만, 예수님은 달랐습니다. 당신이 입으셨던 옷들–피가 묻고 끔찍한 고통의 흔적이 배어 있는 옷이지만 차곡차곡 개어서 옆에 가지런히 두셨던 것입니다.
벳새다 들판에서도 마찬가지입니다. 오병이어의 기적을 행하신 후, 예수님께서는 “남은 조각을 거두고 버리는 것이 없게 하라”(요 6:12)라고 명령하셨습니다. 작은 부스러기 하나도 땅에 떨어지지 않고, 버려지지 않도록 당부하시는 예수님의 말씀 속에서 우리는 섬세한 보살핌의 손을 발견하게 됩니다. 눈에 띄지도 않고, 아무도 관심 갖지 않는 하찮은 일 같지만 예수님은 매사를 이렇게 섬세하게 보살피고 챙기셨던 것입니다.
결론
이사야 선지자는 “그 앞에 모든 열방이 아무것도 아니라”(사 40:17)라고 하였고, “그에게는 열방은 통의 한 방울 물 같고 저울의 적은 티끌 같으며 섬들은 떠오르는 먼지 같다”(사40:15) 하였습니다. 이 모든 창조와 섭리의 역사는 ‘하나님의 손’에 의해 이루어지고 진행되는 것입니다. 교만하게 스스로의 손의 힘에 의지하려 하지 말고, 창조와
