What is the famine that is to come upon us in the End Times?
The Bible tells us that there will be an End Time and prophesizes that the ‘famine’ will be upon us as one of the signs of the End Times (Mt 24:7). Such End Time and the signs of the End Times will suddenly come upon us as a ‘trap’ if we are not alert and awake; so, the saints must always pray while staying alert because it will come upon all people on this earth (Lk 21:34-36). Not only this famine refers to a natural disaster like drought, but it also means the spiritual famine where the grace is stopped on an individual, families and the church. If so, let us examine together the meaning and the cause of such famine.
I. The spiritual meaning of famine.
The Bible defines the spiritual meaning of famine as ‘unable to receive grace.’ While Jesus was tested by the Satan in the wilderness, he made us understand that we must eat not only the physical food but spiritual food which is the Word of God. Jesus was able to overcome these three temptations of the Satan with the Word. What this means is that we will be able to overcome all temptations with the Word; but at the same time, it also means that we will be defeated without the Word of God and be faced with famine. Thus, the Bible says the cause of the famine is ‘unable to receive grace.’ Even during the Great Tribulation, there will be famine where the Word will be stopped as well as the physical famine. “Not a famine for bread or a thirst for water, But rather for hearing the words of the Lord” (Amos 8:11-13). Moreover, Jer 14 and Eze 4:15-17 prophesize that frightening famine will be upon the Israelites. It is the extreme famine that the people baked bread over cow dung. Although such famine surely expressed the extent of physical famine, but at the same time, it also denotes the spiritual famine that is to come in the End Times. Hence, a “doe” or a “wild donkey” that appears in Jer 14 signifies a physical church of the End times without the Word (Jer 14:4-6). Here, ‘grass’ refers to the Word. Like the animals cannot live without grass, it symbolically tells us of the physical church that is struggling with the drought because there is no Word. Thus, the Bible prepares us for the spiritual famine that is to come in the End Times by speaking of various examples of famine.
1). The famine that Abraham encountered (Gen 12:10).
2). The famine that Isaac faced (Gen 26:1).
3). The famine that Ruth encountered (Ruth 1:1).
4). The famine that was upon Jerusalem (2Ki 25:1-3).
5). The famine that occurred during the time of Elijah (1Ki 17:1).
6). The famine that occurred during the time of Elisha (2Ki 8:1).
7). The famine during the time of Ezekiel (Eze 4:16-17).
If all this famine foreshadows the spiritual famine that is to come, i.e., the famine that we are unable to receive grace, I sincerely hope that all of us believers will receive the blessing to pass through this famine by staying alert with the Word and the prayers.
II. The causes of famine.
1). It is because they did not obey the Word of God. The reason that God sent famine was because they did not obey the Word of God. It is stated in Jer 29:18-19 that the reason that God sent the ‘sword, famine and plague’ was because they did not listen to the Word of the prophets that God had sent. It is also stated in Jer 7:13, 25 “I spoke to you again and again, but you did not listen; I called you, but you did not answer.”
2). It is because they did detestable things. It is stated in Eze 6:11 “Because of all the wicked and detestable practices of the people of Israel, they will fall by the sword, famine and plague.
Hence, committing of all detestable things is the cause of famine.
3). It is because the people were ignorant. It is stated in Isa 5:13, ‘My people will go into exile and will die of hunger and thirst for lack of understanding.’
4). It is because the people were not able to understand. The reason that God poured not only the famine but other wraths such as hail, pests and storm upon the Israelites was because He wanted them to understand His will and return to Him through these wraths. However, we see from Amos 4:6 that the people of Israel were still unable to understand, so not only they were not able to repent and return to God but continued to grumble.
5). It is because our hearts still continued to face Egypt (the world). It is stated in Rev 18:4 to come out quickly from Babylon that is about to be destroyed. Moreover, God said He will judge the Israelites by sending them the sword, famine and the plague when they tried to rely only on the strong nation of Egypt and not God during the time of Prophet Jeremiah (Jer 42:16-17). Hence, the reason that these famine and wrath are upon us is because our hearts are set on Egypt which symbolizes the world.
Conclusion
Such spiritual and physical famine will come upon us in the End Times, but those righteous people who believe in Jesus will receive the absolute protection from God (Job 5:19-20, Ps 33:19-22). Like God protected and fed His chosen man Prophet Elijah until the end in the midst of famine (1Ki 17:16), there will be a blessing of absolute protection for us saints. I would like all of you to believe that no persecution, tribulation, agony, despair, famine or danger will separate us from the love of Christ (Rom 8:35).
끝날에 임할 기근은?
성경은 우리에게 종말이 있을 것을 말씀하고 있으며, 그 종 말의 징조 중 하나로 기근이 임할 것을 예언하고 있습니다(마
24:7). 이러한 종말과 종말의 징조들은 깨어 있지 못하면 덫과 같이 갑자기 임하게 되는데, 지구상에 거하는 모든 사람에게 임하기 따 문에 항상 기도하며 깨어 있어야 합니다(눅 21:34-36). 이 기근은 가뭄과 같은 자연재해를 의미할 뿐 아니라, 개인이나 가정 또는 교 회에 은혜가 끊어지는 영적인 기근을 뜻하기도 합니다. 그러면 이 러한 기근의 의미와 원인에 대해 함께 살펴보도록 하겠습니다.
1. 기근의 영적 의미
성경은 기근의 영적 의미를 은혜받지 못하는 것으로 말씀하고 있 습니다. 예수님은 광야에서 마귀에게 시험을 받는 가운데 우리에거 육의 양식뿐 아니라 영의 양식인 하나님의 말씀을 받아 먹어야 함 을 일깨워 주셨습니다. 그러면서 마귀의 세 가지 시험을 모두 말 씀’으로 물리치셨습니다. 이는 말씀만 있으면 모든 시험에 승리할 수 있다는 말이면서, 반대로, 말씀이 없으면 시험이 올 때 패배하므 로 곧 기근을 당하게 된다는 것을 뜻하기도 합니다. 따라서 성경은 기갈의 원인을 은혜받지 못하는 것으로 말씀하고 있습니다.
마지막 7년 대환난 가운데도 말씀이 끊어지는 기갈이 있는가 하 면 육신의 기근이 있습니다. “양식이 없어 주림이 아니며 물이 없다 어 갈함이 아니요 여호와의 말씀을 듣지 못한 기갈이라”(암)
8:11-13), 또한 예레미야 14장이나 겔 4:15-17 말씀을 보면 이스라 엘에 무서운 기근이 임할 것을 예언하고 있습니다. 쇠똥으로 떡을 구워서 먹을 정도로 극심한 기근입니다. 이러한 기근은 물론 육신 적인 기근의 정도를 표현해 주고 있는 것이지만, 동시에 말세에 당 할 영적 기근을 의미하기도 합니다.
그러므로 예레미야 14장에 나오는 암사슴이나 들나귀는 끝날어 말씀이 없는 육신적인 교회를 의미합니다(렘 14:4-6). 여기서 ‘풀’은 말씀을 뜻합니다. 풀이 없으면 짐승이 살 수 없듯이, 끝날에 말씀이 없으므로 기갈에 허덕이는 육신적인 교회의 모습을 상징적으로 말 씀해 주고 있는 것입니다. 따라서 성경은 여러 가지 기근을 말씀하 심으로써 끝날에 닥칠 영적 기갈을 준비시켜 주고 있습니다–① 아브라함이 만난 기근(창 12:10), ② 이삭의 기근(창 26:1), ③ 룻의 기근( 1:1) ④ 예루살렘의 기근(왕하 25:1-3), ⑤ 엘리야 시대의 기근(왕상 17:1), ⑥ 엘리사 시대의 기근(왕하 8:1), ⑦ 에스겔 시다 의 기근(겔 4:16-17). 이처럼 많은 기근이 앞으로 있을 영적인 기근, 즉 은혜 받지 못하는 기갈을 예표한다면, 우리 믿는 성도님들은 말씀 과 기도로 깨어 있음으로 이 기근을 통과하는 축복이 있기를 바라겠습 니다.
2. 기근의 원인
1) 하나님의 말씀을 순종치 않았기 때문입니다.
하나님께서 기근을 보내시는 이유는 하나님의 말씀에 순종치 않기 때문입니다. 렘 29:18-19 말씀을 보면, ‘칼과 기근과 염병’을 주시는 이 유는 하나님께서 보내신 선지자들의 말씀을 듣지 않았기 때문이라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 렘 7:13. 25 말씀을 봐도, “내가 너희에게 말하되 새벽부터 부지런히 말하여도 듣지 아니하였고 너희를 불러도 대답지 아니하였기 때문”이라고 말씀하고 있습니다.
2) 가증한 일을 행하기 때문입니다.
겔 6:11에는 “이스라엘 족속이 모든 가증한 악을 행하므로” 칼과 기 근과 온역에 망하게 된다고 말씀하고 있습니다. 그러므로 모든 가증한 일을 행하는 것이 기근의 원인이 되는 것입니다.
3) 백성이 무지몽매하기 때문입니다.
사 5:13 말씀을 보면, 나의 백성이 무지함을 인하여’ 사로잡히며, 주리게 되고, 목마르게 될 것이라고 말씀하고 있습니다.
4) 백성들이 깨닫지 못하기 때문입니다.
하나님께서 이스라엘에 기근뿐 아니라 우박과 곤충, 폭풍우 등 많 은 재앙을 주신 이유는 이를 통해 깨닫고 하나님 앞에 돌아오게 함이 었습니다. 그러나 암 4:6 말씀을 볼 때, 이스라엘 백성들은 여전히 까 닫지 못하고 하나님 앞에 돌아오지 않고 회개하지도 않을 뿐 아니라 하나님께 불평하고 있음을 볼 수 있습니다.
5) 우리의 마음이 항상 애굽(세상)으로 흘러가기 때문입니다.
계 18:4을 보면, 멸망 받을 바벨론에서 빨리 나오라고 말씀하고 있 습니다. 또한, 예레미야 선지자 시대에는 백성들이 하나님을 의지하지 않고 강대국인 애굽만을 의지하려 하자, 그들에게 칼과 기근과 염병을 보내 심판하시겠다고 말씀하고 있습니다(렘 42:16-17). 따라서 우리에 게 여러 가지 기근과 재앙이 임하는 이유는 애굽과 같은 세상에 마음 을 두기 때문입니다.
결론
위와 같이 말세에는 영육 간의 기근이 임하지만, 예수님을 믿는 의인들은 하나님께 절대 보호의 축복을 받게 됩니다(욥 5:19-20, 시 33:19-22). 기근이 임했지만, 하나님께서는 당신의 택한 사람 엘리 야 선지자를 끝까지 책임지고 먹여 살리셨던 것처럼(왕상 17:6), 우리 믿는 성도들에게도 이러한 절대 보호의 축복이 있습니다. 어떤 환난이 나 곤고나 핍박이나 기근이나 위험도 우리를 그리스도의 사랑에서 끊 을 수 없다는 것을 믿으시기 바랍니다(롬 8:35).
