The thanksgiving that is pleasing to God.
Like Dr. Schweitzer who said, “The flowers of thanksgiving bloom on the tree of satisfaction, and the fruits of happiness grow on the flowers of thanksgiving,” the richest person in the world is the one who is satisfied with what he has and lives a thankful life. That is why the Bible testifies that the Apostle Paul said, ‘Although I own nothing, I have everything,’ as he lived a life full of satisfaction while he was able to be thankful and be able to spread the gospel with joy. If so, on this Thanksgiving Day, let us examine together through Job’s endurance and his faith of thanksgiving to see what a true life of thanksgiving is like that of the Apostle Paul and Dr. Schweitzer and the true thanksgiving that is pleasing too God.
I. The faith in God’s Sovereignty brings up thankfulness.
We see Job’s testimony from v21 of today’s Scripture text which said, “The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised.” Here, “The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away” shows God’s absolute Sovereignty is contained in this. Because God gave everything to us, the right to take away is also with God. Thus, the sovereignty of a man is not on the man himself but is on God who created man. When we understand this, we can offer true thanksgiving. Because Job had such faith to believe God’s Sovereignty, he was ‘blameless’ and a man who only feared God and shunned evil although he lived on this earth. However, why would the wicked Satan come to this household and take away everything? His 7 sons and 3 daughters died on the same day. A robber came and took all his livestock. There were painful sores all over his body where he had to scratch it with a piece of broken pottery. Not only that, even his wife cursed him and said, ‘Curse God and die.’ However, we see from the Bible that behind Job’s such hardship, there was God who allowed Satan to test him. God gave everything to Satan except Job’s life and allowed it to test him so that God can give greater blessing to Job when he passes through them. Hence, Job realized that everything is in God’s hands although he lost everything. Job realized that this was certainly not a product of coincidence but was accomplished with meticulous and thoughtful planning of God Himself. Moreover, Satan tried to shake Job off using his friends. However, Job did not sway or lose his faith of thanksgiving toward God. This indeed is the faith to believe God’s Sovereignty. This refers to the faith of Apostle Paul who said, “For from Him and through Him and for Him are all things” (Rom 11:36). When you have such faith to believe in God’s ‘absolute Sovereignty,’ I would like you to believe that you will be able to overcome any tribulations like Job with thanksgiving and not committing sin of grumbling with your lips.
II. Job’s faith of nakedness has triggered thanksgiving.
We see from v21 of today’s Scripture text that Job testifies for his faith of nakedness by saying. “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart.” Like a person who is born with naked body, he will ultimately return with naked body. Because Job knew and saw with his spiritual eyes that he will return to God, he was always joyful and thankful. Hence, we should clearly know our original status. Solomon understood this as well and said in Ecc 5:15, “Everyone comes naked from their mother’s womb, and as everyone comes, so they depart.” Ultimately, since a man was born of a naked body, he would return in naked body as well. Because he understood such truth, there were always thanksgiving and praise in Job’s heart, and there was worship no matter how difficult his circumstances were. Thus, such faith of Job is in short, the faith that is always rising. The worries, despair and doubtfulness are the faith that is collapsing and the faith that is deteriorating. However, Job “got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship” (Job 1:20). Doesn’t this indeed speak of rising worship and rising faith? Job received sad and devastating news consecutively. However, with the faith of believing God’s Sovereignty and the faith of nakedness in times of agony, Job thought to himself, ‘Let me rise before God, be thankful to Him and give worship to God.’ Therefore, we must believe in God’s absolute Sovereignty. When we especially have the faith of nakedness and let go of all greed, we can give true thanksgiving. As we offer Thanksgiving Service today, what have we prepared to give as thanksgiving offering that is pleasing and delightful to God? That is not on the type or amount of offering we give but on the fact that we must give offering that is prepared ‘ahead of time.’ It is not easy for Job to give thanks and praise God when all his 10 children were suddenly killed and all his possessions were taken away. However, he who has prepared for thanksgiving ahead of time like Job will be able to offer complete thanksgiving no matter what type of circumstances he is faced with.
Conclusion
On every Thanksgiving, we need to have the faith to offer ourselves before God as the firstfruits. Moreover, although Job lost everything, he realized in faith the faith to believe in God’s absolute Sovereignty and the faith of nakedness that one came naked will return naked; so, I sincerely hope that you will have such understanding and be able to rise, be thankful to God and praise and worship Him no matter what type of danger that may come upon you.
하나님이 기뻐하시는 감사
“만족의 나무에 감사의 꽃이 피고 감사의 꽃에 행복의 열매가 맺힙니다”라는 슈바이처 박사의 말처럼, 이 세상에서 가장 부유한 사람은 자기가 가진 것으로 만족하며 감사생활 하는 사람입니다. 그래서 사도 바울은 ‘내가 아무것도 갖지 못했지만 나는 모든 것을 가진 자로다’고 말씀하면서 믿음으로 감사하고 기뻐하며 복음을 전하면서 만족하게 살았다고 성경은 증거하고 있습니다. 그렇다면 금년 추수감사절을 맞아, 우리는 욥의 인내와 감사 신앙을 통해 사도 바울이나 슈바이처 박사같이 참된 감사생활이 무엇이며, 또한 하나님이 진정 기뻐하시는 감사가 무엇인지를 함께 살펴보기로 하겠습니다.
1. 하나님주권 신앙이 감사를 자아내게 했습니다.
오늘 본문 21절에서 “주신 자도 여호와시요 취하신 자도 여호와시오니 여호와의 이름이 찬송을 받으실지니이다”라는 욥의 고백을 볼 수 있습니다. 여기서 “주신 자도 여호와시오 취하신 자도 여호와시오니”라는 말은 하나님의 절대적인 주권 사상이 담겨 있는 말씀입니다. 하나님께서 우리에게 모든 것을 주셨기 때문에, 다시 취하실 권한도 하나님께 있습니다. 그러므로 인간의 주권은 인간 스스로에게 있는 것이 아니라, 우리를 창조하신 하나님에게 있는 것입니다. 이를 깨달을 때 참된 감사를 드릴 수 있습니다.
욥은 이처럼 하나님주권 신앙을 가진 성도였기에 세상에 살면서도 세상 것이 하나도 섞이지 않은 ‘순전한’ 사람이었고, 악에서 떠난 자였으며, 하나님만을 경외하며 사는 사람이었습니다. 그런데 이러한 가정에 왜 이렇게 악한 사단이 들어와서 전부 다 빼앗아 갔습니까? 아들 일곱과 딸 셋이 한날에 죽었습니다. 강도를 만나 그 수많은 가축을 다 뺏겼습니다. 몸에는 악창이 나서 기왓조각으로 긁어야만 할 정도로 처참하게 됐습니다. 거기다가 아내마저도 남편을 비난하며, ‘차라리 하나님을 욕하고 죽으라’는 악담을 하고 있습니다. 그러나 성경을 볼 때, 이러한 환난의 배후에는 하나님께서 사단을 통해 욥을 시험하도록 허용하셨음을 알 수 있습니다. 욥의 생명만 빼고 모든 것을 사단에게 맡겨 시험하도록 하셔서, 이를 통과했을 때 욥에게 더 큰 축복을 주시기 위함입니다. 그러므로 욥은 모든 것을 다 빼앗겨도 이 모든 되어 가는 일들이 하나님의 오른 장중에 있다는 것을 깨달았던 것입니다. 결코, 우연의 산물이 아니라, 하나님 자신의 치밀하신 선한 계획 속에서 이루어진다는 사실을 욥은 깨달았던 것입니다.
이어서 사단은 욥의 친구들을 통해 욥을 흔들어 봅니다. 그러나 욥은 여전히 꿈쩍도 하지 않고 하나님을 향한 감사의 신앙을 잃지 않았습니다. 이것이 바로 하나님주권 신앙입니다. “만물이 주에게서 나오고 주로 말미암고 주에게로 돌아감이라”(롬 11:36)라는 사도 바울의 신앙을 말합니다. 이러한 ‘하나님 절대주권’ 신앙이 있을 때, 우리는 욥과 같이 어떠한 어려운 곤경에 처해도 입술로 원망하는 죄를 짓지 않고, 감사 신앙으로 승리할 수 있다는 것을 믿으시기 바랍니다.
2. 적신(赤身)의 신앙이 감사를 작동시켰습니다.
본문 21절에서 “가로되 내가 모태에서 적신이 나왔사온즉 또한 적신이 그리로 돌아가올지라”라고 고백하는 욥의 ‘적신 신앙’을 볼 수 있습니다. 사람이 모태에서 나올 때 붉은 알몸으로 나왔듯이, 인간의 종국도 마찬가지로 알몸으로 돌아가게 됩니다. 욥은 자기의 처음 나온 곳인 하나님께로 되돌아갈 줄을 믿음으로 보고 알았기 때문에 늘 즐거워하며 감사할 줄 알았던 것입니다. 그러므로 우리 사람은 인간 본연의 상태를 올바로 알아야 합니다. 솔로몬도 이를 깨닫고 “저가 모태에서 벌거벗고 나왔은즉 그 나온 대로 돌아가고”라고 전 5:15에서 말씀하고 있습니다. 결국, 인생은 적신에서 나왔으니 돌아갈 때도 적신으로 돌아가는 것입니다. 욥은 이러한 진리를 깨달았기 때문에 늘 감사와 찬송이 있었고, 아무리 어려워도 예배가 있었습니다. 그러므로 이러한 욥의 신앙은 한마디로 늘 일어나는 신앙입니다.
근심이나 걱정은 다 주저앉는 신앙입니다. 의심 또한 주저앉는 것입니다. 좌절하는 신앙입니다. 하지만 욥은 “일어나 겉옷을 찢고 머리털을 밀고 땅에 엎드려 경배”하였습니다(욥 1:20). 바로 일어나는 예배, 일어나는 신앙을 말하고 있지 않습니까? 욥은 절망의 비보를 연속으로 들었습니다. 그러나 그럴 때일수록 하나님주권 신앙과 적신의 신앙으로, ‘내가 하나님 앞에 일어서서 감사하고, 일어서서 예배드려야지’라는 생각을 가졌던 것입니다. 그러므로 우리 인생은 절대 하나님의 주권을 믿어야 합니다. 특별히 적신의 신앙을 가지고 모든 욕심을 떨쳐버릴 줄 알아야 참된 감사를 드릴 수 있습니다.
오늘 추수감사절 예배를 맞이해서 하나님이 기뻐하시는 감사, 하나님이 제일 좋아하는 감사를 드리기 위해 여러분들은 무엇을 준비했습니까? 그것은 예물의 종류나 그것의 많고 적음에 있지 않고, ‘미리 준비된 감사’를 드려야 한다는 것입니다. 10남매가 갑자기 죽임을 당하고 모든 소유물을 잃게 됐을 때 하나님께 감사하고 찬송한다는 것은 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 하지만 미리 준비된 감사가 있는 사람은 욥과 같이 어떤 처지에서도 온전한 감사를 드릴 수가 있습니다.
결론
오늘 추수감사절을 맞아, 우리 자신이 하나님 앞에 첫 열매가 돼서 바치는 믿음을 가져야 할 것입니다. 또한, 욥과 같이, 모든 것을 다 빼앗겼지만 ‘하나님의 주권’ 신앙과 적신으로 왔으니 적신으로 돌아간다는 ‘적신 신앙’을 믿음으로 깨달았을 때, 범사에 어떤 위경에서도 일어서서 하나님 앞에 감사하고 찬송하며, 예배드리는 감사의 삶을 사는 여러분들이 되기를 바라겠습니다.
