Do you know the time?
Today’s Scripture text is a scene where God teaches Job about the wisdom to know the time through the condition and the rearing of the various beasts of the creation. Through today’s message, I sincerely hope that all of us to receive the spiritual wisdom that God gives us so that we can differentiate the signs of this generation and distinguish time so that we can become the wise and faithful people who can share appropriate food.
I. All time and dates have been determined by God.
Like there is a time for a mountain goat to rear its young and the doe to bear her fawn, all time and dates have been determined by God with His Sovereignty. Hence, only God knows about that time. Likewise, only Father knows when the Son of Man comes. Thus, what God wants to teach Job through the beasts is the fact that all times of the world of creation are controlled by God. “A time to give birth and a time to die; a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build up” (Ecc 3:2-3). As you can see, the Bible clearly testifies that there are set times and dates. This is the product of God’s Sovereign will for creation and His governance. Who can decide their birthdays? The decision for one’s date of birth and the date of passing is the product of God’s Sovereign will. Hence, a man cannot know the beginning and the ending of any processes. Only God knows and decides on the time we have left in our life and carries it out according to His will. The beginning, execution and the completion of all creation is accomplished by God’s Sovereign will. Thus, a man only has a duty to utilize given time wisely from the perspective of the faithful stewards.
II. The saints must live within the time that God has set for them.
What we can understand from the message that God told Job is the fact that a mountain goat or a doe will only live within the time that God has set for them according to the ability that was allotted as a creation. There cannot be grumbling or complaints in them. It is like the relationship between a potter and the clay. Like the clay pot that cannot grumble against a potter saying ‘why did you create me as a worthless vessel?’ we the creation cannot grumble against the Creator ‘why did you set my date as such?’ Of the people in the Old Testament, King Hezekiah became a king at age 25 and reigned for 29 years; and he was told by the Prophet Isaiah that he will die in 3 days. God drew a boundary on Hezekiah’s time as within 3 days. However, didn’t he receive an extension of his life by 15 years as a result of him kneeling down and praying against the wall immediately after he heard it? Outwardly, it may seem like an extra 15 years was added to Hezekiah’s original lifespan; but truly, even that was what God had set as the lifespan of King Hezekiah. Through this, it shows His divine administration of providence to allow King Hezekiah to use his time more appropriately and efficiently. Hence, it is not important for all mankind to know how many years of life one has received from God, but it is more important to how wisely and kindly that time is utilized. That is why God told us to ‘make the most of every opportunity’ (Eph 5:16). It is because the ‘days are evil.’ Distinguishing the ‘flow of time’ is the ‘wisdom to know the time.’ Indeed, this is most useful in one’s life. The ability to know and distinguish this is far greater wisdom than any knowledge or the field of study of the world. If we do not know such day, then the time will quickly pass by us like an arrow. However, if we know the day through the spiritual wisdom, the time will stop before us. It is like how the sun and the moon stopped when Joshua commanded them to stop (Jos 10:12-13). Likewise, we will be able to dwell in eternal time of God when we understand the time that God has set for us and live within it.
III. God gave us time so that we can fear Him.
We must not use the time that has been allotted to us as our personal time. The reason that God gave us time was because He wanted us to fear and honor Him through the time. Thus, it is the duty of a true saint to live within the time that God has set for him and fear Him through his everyday life. Moreover, all of us must stand before God at the end of history or the time that He has set for us. At that time, God will ask each of us, ‘how have you spent the time that I have granted you with?” How would you answer Him then? The time can neither be repeated nor it can be the same. The time is temporary and is disposable. Because the dates are different, the time is also different; and a man’s body becomes old because the time is different. It is time that cannot be restored, and it is youth that cannot be recovered. However, the time of God is constant and the same (Heb 1:12). This means that we can rule the time if we receive the wisdom to know the time of God. No skilled man can create or rule over time, but it is possible for those who have the wisdom to know the time. That is why Moses pleaded to God earlier to ‘teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom’ (Ps 90:12).
Conclusion
No one knows how many hours were given to him. However, what is important is how we use that allotted time wisely, appropriately and efficiently. A saint must always stand before God and live to look only upon Him, and it is the image of a faithful steward to differentiate the given time and effectively share the Food.
때를 아느냐?
오늘 본문은, 하나님께서 피조세계의 여러 짐승의 상태와 양육을 통해서 욥에게 때를 아는 지혜에 대해서 가르쳐 주고 계시는 장면입니다. 오늘 이 말씀을 통해, 하나님께서 주시는 영적인 지혜를 받아 시대의 징조를 분별하고, 때를 구분하여 알맞은 양식을 나누어 주는 지혜 있고 충성된 자들이 다 되시기를 바랍니다.
1. 모든 때와 기한은 하나님께서 정하신 것입니다.
산 염소가 새끼를 치고 암사슴이 새끼를 낳는 때가 있듯이, 모든 때와 기한은 하나님께서 주권적으로 결정하신 것입니다. 그러므로 그 때는 오직 하나님만이 아십니다. 마찬가지로, 인자의 오시는 때도 오직 아버지만 아십니다. 하나님께서 이처럼 짐승을 통해 욥에게 교훈하고자 하시는 것은 모든 피조세계의 때를 하나님께서 주장하신다는 것입니다. “날 때가 있고 죽을 때가 있으며 심을 때가 있고 심은 것을 뽑을 때가 있으며 죽일 때가 있고 치료시킬 때가 있으며 헐 때가 있고 세울 때가 있으며”(전 3:2-3)–이처럼 성경은 정해진 때와 기한이 있음을 분명히 증거하고 있습니다. 이는 하나님 자신의 주권적 창조 의지와 통치 섭리의 결과입니다.
누가 자기의 출생일을 결정할 수 있습니까? 출생날짜와 죽는 날의 결정은 오직 하나님 자신의 주권적 의지의 산물입니다. 그러므로 일의 시작과 마침을 사람으로서는 알 수가 없습니다. 우리의 생존 시간도 하나님 자신만이 아시고, 정하시고, 그 뜻대로 준행하고 계십니다. 전 피조세계의 시작과 진행과 종말도 오직 하나님의 주권적 의지로 이루어지는 것입니다. 따라서 사람에게는, 오직 주어진 시간을 선용하는 청지기의 입장에서 충성하는 것밖에 없습니다.
2. 성도는 하나님께서 정하신 시간 안에서 살아야 합니다.
하나님께서 욥에게 하신 말씀을 통해 우리가 깨달을 수 있는 것은, 산 염소나 암사슴은 하나님께서 정하신 시간 속에 피조물로서 자기에게 주어진 기능대로 따라 살아갈 뿐이라는 사실입니다. 그들에게는 불평이나 불만이 있을 수 없습니다–마치 토기장이와 질그릇과의 관계처럼. 그릇이 자기를 만든 토기장이이게 ‘나를 왜 이렇게 천한 그릇으로 만들었습니까?’라고 불평할 수 없듯이, 피조물 된 우리도 ‘왜 나의 기한을 이렇게 정하셨습니까?’라고 불평할 수 없습니다.
구약의 인물 중 히스기야왕은 25세 때 왕이 되어 29년 동안 치리했는데, 이사야 선지자를 통해서 ‘3일 안에 죽는다’는 통보를 받게 됩니다. 하나님께서 그의 시간의 경계를 3일 안으로 그어 놓으신 것입니다. 그러나 그 말은 들은 히스기야왕은 즉시 엎드려 벽에 대고 기도한 결과로 15년의 기간을 연장받지 않았습니까? 겉으로 볼 때 히스기야왕이 자기의 원래 받은 생존 기간에 15년을 덤으로 받은 것 같지만, 사실은 그것까지도 하나님께서 정하신 히스기야 왕의 생존 기간입니다. 다만 이를 통해, 그 받은 생존 기간을 더욱 유효적절하게 사용할 수 있도록 하시는 하나님의 섭리적 역사를 보여 주고 있는 것입니다. 따라서 모든 인생은 하나님으로부터 얼마의 시간을 받았느냐가 중요한 것이 아니라, 그 시간을 얼마나 착하고 선하게 이용하느냐가 더 중요한 것입니다.
그렇기 때문에 하나님께서는 ‘세월을 아끼라’고 말씀하고 계십니다(엡 5:16). 그 이유는 ‘때가 악하기 때문’입니다. 이러한 ‘때의 흐름’을 구분하는 것이 바로 ‘때를 아는 지혜’입니다. 이것이 인생에게 가장 유용합니다. 세상의 어떤 학문이나 지식보다, 이것을 알고, 구분할 수 있는 능력이야말로 가장 큰 지혜입니다.
이러한 때를 모른다면, 시간은 우리 앞에서 화살과 같이 빠르게 지나갑니다. 하지만 우리가 영적인 지혜를 통해 때를 알면, 우리 앞에 시간이 멈춰 섭니다. 마치 여호수아가 태양과 달을 향해 멈춰 설 것을 명령할 때 그대로 된 것과 같습니다(수 10:12-13). 우리도 이와 같이 하나님의 정하신 때를 깨달아 그 기한 안에 살 때, 우리는 하나님의 영원한 시간 속에 거하는 축복을 받게 됩니다.
3. 우리에게 시간을 주심은 하나님을 경외하게 하기 위함입니다.
우리에게 주어진 시간을 자기의 것인 줄 알고 사용(私用)해서는 안 됩니다. 하나님께서 우리에게 시간을 주신 것은, 시간을 통해 하나님을 경외하게 하기 위해서입니다. 그러므로 하나님께서 정하신 시간 안에 살아가며, 범사에 우리의 삶을 통해 하나님을 경외하는 것이 참성도의 본분입니다. 그리고 역사의 끝, 하나님께서 정하신 시간의 끝에 가서 우리는 하나님 앞에 다 서야 합니다. 그때 하나님께서는 ‘내가 준 시간을 어떻게 선용했느냐’고 각자에게 몰으십니다. 그때 성도 여러분은 뭐라고 답변하시겠습니까?
시간은 반복될 수도, 동일한 시간이 있을 수도 없습니다. 시간은 일회적입니다. 날짜가 다르니 시간도 다르고, 시간이 다르므로 사람의 몸은 늙어 가는 것입니다. 다시 찾을 수 없는 게 젊음이고, 다시 회복할 수 없는 게 시간입니다. 하지만 하나님의 연대는 여전합니다(히 1:12). 이것은 사람이 하나님의 때를 아는 지혜를 받으면, 시간을 다스릴 수 있다는 뜻입니다. 어떤 유능한 사람도 시간을 창조하거나 마음대로 할 수 없지만, 때를 아는 지혜가 있는 사람에겐 가능한 것입니다. 그래서 일찍이 모세는 ‘우리에게 날 계수함을 가르치소서, 지혜로운 마음을 얻게 하소서’(시 90:12)라고 간구했던 것입니다.
결론
우리 각자에게 얼마의 시간이 주어졌는지는 아무도 모릅니다. 다만 중요한 것은, 나에게 주어진 시간을 얼마나 값있게, 보람있게 선용하느냐입니다. 성도는 오직 범사에 하나님 앞에 서서, 하나님만을 바라보며 생활하는 삶을 살아야 하고, 그것이 주어진 때를 분간하여 적절하게 양식을 내어다 주는 충성된 청지기의 모습입니다.
