What is something that the saints must always make efforts on?
There are many things that we the saints must make efforts on when we live in this world, but what we must make efforts on is for the will of God that He wants and desires. It is stated in v8 of today’s Scripture text, “…so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good.” Likewise, we can see that the Bible used a term such as ‘always’ devote, devote ‘more and more’ or devote ‘fully’ in order to make the saints to make efforts for the will of God. If so, let us examine together through the Bible what it is that the saints must make efforts on.
I. Make every effort to enter through the narrow door (Lk 13:24).
It is stated in above Scripture verse that the saints must make every effort to enter through the narrow door. It is because there are many people who may not enter even if they ask for it. Because the road that leads to the world is wide, it is easy to enter and convenient to commute. People say whatever they wish to say. However, the saints tend to hold their thoughts or hold what they wish to say because of the verses such as ‘Speak in the Lord,’ or ‘Whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil’ (1Pet 3:10). That is why the gate that leads to life is small and the road is narrow that only a few find it (Mt 7:14). The road that enable us to make every effort to attend every service and devote fully is narrow. However, a road to destruction is wide. It is stated that the’ road that leads to destruction is broad that many would enter through it’ (Mt 7:13). Thus, we must make efforts on everything we do in order to arrive at the gate that leads us to life or a narrow road.
II. Make every effort to enter the eternal rest (Heb 4:4-11).
From the testimony of the writer of the Book of Hebrews, we see that no one has entered the world of rest as of yet. That is why he is urging us to ‘make efforts’ to enter that rest that is remaining. It is stated that God granted them rest on every side because the Israelites entered the Land of Canaan led by Joshua and destroyed the 7 nations of Canaan (Jos 21:44, 23:1). That is why the Israelites after Joshua thought that their ancestors had all received rest. However, because that rest merely was the rest that foreshadows the eternal rest that will be given to the saints who received salvation, God spoke through the writer of the Book of Hebrews that there is a rest that remains and we must make every effort to enter that rest. If so, what shall we do in order to enter the rest that is remaining? The advice of David in Heb 4 said, ‘do not harden your hearts.’ If the Israelites disobeyed the Word by hardening their hearts even though God proclaimed through Moses, we will be able to enter that rest that is remaining when we open our hearts widely before the Word and obey according to the Word. By saying to Zacchaeus and declaring him, ‘This man, too, is a son of Abraham’ in front of the Israelites who boasted about being the descendants of Abraham, Jesus instantly made the Israelites as the Gentiles and made Zacchaeus who climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him as a descendant of Abraham (Lk 19:9).
III. Make every effort to appear before the Lord blameless in flesh and spirit (2Pet 3:14).
It is not easy to live a blameless life. However, our Lord is commanding us to make every effort so that we stand before him blameless in flesh and in spirit in our life of faith. In the case of 2 disciples who were heading to Emmaus, they left behind a shame of heading to the world when they did not believe in the Word of the Lord, but were disappointed and in despair when Jesus was crucified and died on the cross. They did not recognize the resurrected Jesus even when he appeared before them, then they realized this much later (Lk 24:33~). In the case of Moses, we see the Israelites during the 40-year wilderness journey that they always made Moses irate and God extremely irate with their constant disobedience and rebelliousness. As a result, the congregations’ spirit of distrust has reached Moses that caused him to struck the rock twice with his staff, and he was not allow to enter the Land of Canaan but just look at it (Num 20:8-12). As you can see, even in the moment that something goes wrong in our flesh or spirit and incur blemishes, we will receive God’s frightening judgment and not His promises. Hence, we must be blameless both in flesh and in spirit. Moreover, it is stated that we must reject every kind of evil (1Thes 5:22). For this purpose, God is encouraging us even to this date to make every effort. When we see the Israelites constantly distrust and complain although their sandals and the clothes did not wear out for 40 years and received grace that they were provided with manna and quails, we can realize how difficult it is to live blameless life both in flesh and in spirit.
Conclusion
The life of the saints who believe in God is the life to make ‘every effort.’ However, we cannot reach God’s level of expectation with our strength alone. Only when we entrust and rely fully on God, He will protect us so that no evil ones can lay their hands on us (1Jn 5:18). When the evil ones cannot lay their hands on us, we live a life of faith that is blameless both in flesh and in spirit. The road that we walk on in order to live blameless life both in flesh and in spirit is the narrow road. I sincerely hope all of us to realize that eternal rest will be granted when we walk on that narrow road so that we will make every effort to do God’s work.
성도가 항상 힘써야 할 일은?
믿는 성도가 세상을 살아갈 때에 힘쓰는 일이 많지만, 우리는 하나님께서 원하시고 바라시는 뜻을 위해 힘써야 할 것입니다. 본문 8절에 보면 “이는 하나님을 믿는 자들로 하여금 조심하여 선한 일을 힘쓰게 하려 함이라”라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 이처럼 하나님의 일에 힘쓰는 성도를 만들기 위해 성경에서 ‘힘쓰라’는 말을 찾아보면, ‘항상’ 힘쓰라, ‘많이’ 힘쓰라, ‘더욱’ 힘쓰라는 말로 표현된 것을 찾아볼 수 있습니다. 그렇다면 어떠한 일에 성도들이 힘을 써야 할지 성경을 통해 상고해 보도록 하겠습니다.
1. 좁은 문으로 들어가기를 힘쓰라(눅 13:24)
위의 구절에 보면, 성도들은 좁은 문으로 들어가기를 힘써야 한다고 말씀하고 있습니다. 이는 들어가기를 구하여도 못 하는 자가 많기 때문입니다. 세상의 길은 넓은 길이기 때문에 들어가기가 쉽고 다니기도 편합니다. 자기 마음에 있는 말을 다 하고 지냅니다. 하지만 믿는 사람은, 말을 한마디 하더라도 ‘주 안에서 말하라’. 또는 ‘좋은 날 보기를 원하거든 혀를 금하라’(벧전 3:10) 하셨기 때문에, 때로는 하고 싶은 말도 못 하고, 참아야 하는 경우가 많습니다. 그래서 생명으로 인도하는 문은 좁고 길이 협착하여 찾는 이가 적다고 말씀하고 있습니다(마 7:14). 모든 공적인 예배에 참석하고 봉사에 헌신하는 길 또한 좁은 길입니다.
그러나 멸망의 길은 넓습니다. ‘멸망으로 인도하는 문은 크고 그 길이 넓어 그리로 들어가는 자가 많다’(마 7:13)고 증거하고 있습니다. 그러기에 좁은 길, 생명으로 인도하는 문에 당도하기 위해서는 매사에 힘쓰지 않으면 안 됩니다.
2. 영원한 안식에 들어가기를 힘쓰라(히 4:4-11)
히브리서 기자의 증거를 볼 때, 아직 안식 세계에 들어간 사람이 없다고 말씀하고 있습니다. 그렇기 때문에 그 남은 안식에 들어가기 위해서 ‘힘쓰라’고 히브리서 기자는 권면하고 있는 것입니다.
여호수아를 통해 가나안이 입성하고 가나안 7족속을 다 멸하는 일이 끝났으므로, 하나님께서는 사방에 안식을 주셨다고 말씀하고 있습니다(수 21:44, 23:1). 그래서 여호수아 후에 이스라엘 백성들은 자기 열조가 안식을 얻은 줄로 생각하고 있었습니다. 그러나 그 안식은 장차 구원 얻는 성도들에게 주어질 영원한 안식의 예표에 불과한 것이었기에, 하나님께서는 히브리서 기자를 통해 남은 안식이 있음과 그 남은 안식에 들어가기를 힘써야 할 것을 우리에게 말씀해 주고 있는 것입니다.
그렇다면 남은 안식에 들어가기 위해서는 어떻게 해야 할까요? 히브리서 4장을 볼 때, 다윗의 권면에 의하면 ‘마음을 강퍅하게 하지 말라’고 말씀하고 있습니다. 이스라엘 백성들은 하나님께서 모세를 통해 오늘의 말씀을 선포해 주셨음에도 불구하고 불순종하여 마음을 강퍅하게 먹었다면, 이제 우리는 그 말씀 앞에 우리 마음 문을 활짝 열어 맞이하고, 말씀대로 순종함으로 말미암아 남은 안식에 들어갈 수가 있는 것입니다. 오히려 스스로 아브라함의 자손 됨만을 자랑하는 이스라엘 앞에서, 예수님은 삭개오를 향해 ‘너도 아브라함의 자손이다’ 선언하심으로, 순간 아브라함의 자손 이스라엘은 이방으로 만드시고, 예수를 보기 위해 뽕나무에까지 올라간 삭개오는 아브라함의 자손으로 만드시는 역사를 행하셨던 것입니다(눅 19:9).
3. 영육 간 흠이 없이 주 앞에 나타나기를 힘쓰라(벧후 3:14)
사람이 삶을 살면서 아무런 흠이 없이 사는 것이 쉽지 않습니다. 그러나 우리의 신앙생활에 있어서 주님은 영육 간에 흠이 없이 주 앞에 설 수 있도록 힘쓰라고 명령하고 있는 것입니다.
엠마오로 가는 두 제자의 경우를 볼 때, 그들은 주님의 말씀을 믿지 못하고, 십자가에 달려 돌아가시자 실망과 좌절과 낙담에 빠진 나머지 다시 세상으로 향하는 오점을 남겼습니다. 부활하신 주님이 그들에게 나타나셨지만 알아보지 못하다, 나중에서야 깨닫게 됐던 것입니다(눅 24:33-).
모세의 경우를 볼 때도, 이스라엘은 불순종과 패역으로 늘 모세의 마음을 분노케 하고 하나님을 격노케 했던 40년 광야 생활의 모습을 발견할 수 있습니다. 그 결과로, 백성들의 불신의 얼이 모세에게 미침으로 말미암아 지팡이로 반석을 두 번 치는 바람에, 가나안 땅에 들어가지 못하고 바라보기만 해야 했습니다(민 20:8-12). 이처럼 우리의 영육 간에 순간이라도 잘못돼서 흠이 생기게 되면 하나님의 무서운 심판을 받게 되고, 하나님의 약속을 받지 못하는 처지가 되는 것입니다. 그러므로 영육 간 흠이 없어야 합니다. 또한, 악은 모양이라도 버리라고 했습니다(살전 5:22). 이를 위해 힘쓰라고 이 시간 우리에게 권고해 주는 것입니다.
광야 40년 동안 신발과 옷이 해어지지 않고, 만나와 메추라기를 통해 양식을 공급받는 은총을 받았음에도 불구하고, 믿지 못하고 원망과 불평이 가득했던 이스라엘 백성들을 볼 때, 영육 간 흠이 없는 삶이 얼마나 어려운 것인가를 깨달을 수 있습니다.
결론
하나님을 믿는 성도들의 삶은 ‘힘쓰는’ 삶입니다. 그러나 내 힘만으로는 아무리 힘쓸지라도 하나님께서 원하시는 기준에 도달할 수 없습니다. 오직 하나님께 맡기고 의탁할 때, 하나님께서는 우리를 악한 자가 만지지도 못하도록 지켜 주십니다(요일 5:18). 악한 자가 우리를 만지지도 못할 때, 영육 간 흠이 없는 신앙을 하게 되는 것입니다. 영육 간 흠 없이 살기 위해 걷는 길이 좁은 길입니다. 그 좁은 길을 걸을 때 우리에게 영원한 안식이 주어진다는 것을 깨닫고, 오늘 하루도 주의 일에 항상 힘쓰는 성도님들이 되시기 바라겠습니다.
