Seven horns and seven eyes
It is testified in v6 of today’s Scripture text that Jesus who is the Lamb, had seven horns and seven eyes. If so, what do the seven horns mean, and what do the seven eyes denote? Today, we will focus on the seven eyes as an introduction.
I. The history that begins and ends with the eyes.
The Bible tells us that the history of mankind begins and ends with the eyes. 1) The judgment during the time of Noah occurred because of the eyes. The fall of the mankind during the time of Noah is well illustrated in Gen 6:1-2, “The sons of God saw that the daughters of humans were beautiful.” This reminds us that the sons of faith during the days of Noah did not see what they were supposed to look upon but fell and were destroyed by the judgment of the waters because they had the wicked eyes to see the beauty of the world. Likewise, Zech 14:12 tells us that God will strike them with a plague that their “eyes will rot in their sockets” so that they will also be destroyed in the End Times because of the eyes. 2) The fall of Adam and Eve also occurred because of eyes. After God created Adam and Eve, He placed them in the Garden of Eden and commanded them never to eat the fruit of good and evil; but they became greedy and fell into temptation when they saw the tree. In Gen 3:6, when Eve “saw” the forbidden tree of good and evil, it looked good for food and pleasing to her eyes, and also desirable for gaining wisdom. Thus, they were already heading for the fall because Eve’s eyes were wicked. 3) The Israelites during the time of Jesus also had the wicked eyes. We see from Jn 9 that when Jesus healed a man who was born blind, the Israelites did not see this as a sign of blessing that truly opened their spiritual eyes. Not only the Israelites but also the disciples were as blind as a bat that they could not see who truly Jesus was although the Lord whom many prophets and the righteous people wanted to see has come. That is why Jesus said, “Blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear” (Mt 13:16), and said to the religious leaders during is time who pretended to believe without understanding or faith, “The blind will see and those who see will become blind” (Jn 9:39-41). Rather, by saying to Zacchaeus and declaring him, “This man, too, is a son of Abraham” in front of the Israelites who boasted about being the descendants of Abraham, Jesus instantly made the Israelites as the Gentiles and made Zacchaeus who climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him as a descendant of Abraham (Lk 19:9).
II. The work of the seven eyes.
It is stated in v6 of today’s Scripture text that the Lamb has seven eyes. It is testified that these seven eyes are the “seven eyes of the LORD that range throughout the earth” (Zech 4:10), the “seven eyes on that one stone” (Zech 3:9), and the “seven lamps and the seven spirits” (Rev 4:5). Moreover, we see from 2Chr 16:9 that these seven eyes range throughout the earth. If so, what do these seven eyes see? 1) They see through the innermost thoughts. We see from Jn 1:45-48, Jesus spoke about Nathanael who followed Philip, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.” Even though he had never met him, Jesus had eyes that could see through Nathanael’s heart. As a result, Nathanael was the first person to fulfill Jacob’s victorious name Israel mentioned in Gen 32 and also received a blessing to pass through the final judgment. By recognized by Jesus and was given a new name, he became the true victor that passed through judgment. Likewise, the seven eyes of the Lord are everywhere, searching through the hearts and mind to see through the innermost thoughts (Prov 15:3, Jer 23:24). 2) They see righteousness. It is testified in 1Pet 3:12, “The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous.” That is why the wicked will be separated from the righteous during the final judgment. The wicked will not be able to stand in the assembly of the righteous. As it is stated in Mt 13:49, the angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them into the blazing furnace. Hence, those who dwell in the apple of God’s eye are the righteous people who will not scorn the Word of God (Prov 13:13) but take it as bread of life.
Conclusion
The seven eyes of Jesus are like flaming torches (Dan 10:6) and like blazing fire (Rev 1:14, 19:12). If so, we the saints must receive the authority of these seven eyes, seven horns, and seven spirits. The secret is that we must pray and also buy spiritual salve from Jesus to put on our eyes, so we can see (Rev 3:17-18). Thus, I sincerely hope that we utilize our eyes only for the will of God while we fix our wicked eyes to put off our old self and put on the new self.
일곱 뿔과 일곱 눈
본문 6절 말씀을 볼 때 어린양 되신 예수님은 일곱 뿔과 일곱 눈이 있다고 증거하고 있습니다. 그러면 여기서 말하는 일곱 뿔은 무엇을 의미하고, 일곱 눈은 무엇을 뜻할까요? 오늘은 서론적으로 일곱 눈에 대해서 중점적으로 살펴보도록 하겠습니다.
1. 눈에서 시작하여 눈으로 끝나는 역사
성경은 인류 역사가 눈에서 시작하여 눈에서 끝난다고 말씀하고 있습니다.
1) 노아 때 심판은 눈 때문에 왔습니다.
창 6:1-2 말씀을 볼 때, 노아 당시의 타락상은 “하나님의 아들들이 사람의 딸들의 아름다움을 보고”라는 말씀에 잘 나타나 있습니다. 이는 노아 당시에 믿음의 아들들이 온전히 바라봐야 할 것을 보지 못하고 세상의 아름다움을 보는 타락한 눈을 가져서, 물 심판으로 멸망당하고 말았음을 깨닫게 해줍니다.
마찬가지로, 슥 14:12 말씀을 볼 때, 하나님께서는 “그 눈이 구멍 속에서 썩”는 재앙을 내리시므로, 마지막 때도 눈으로 말미암아 멸망하게 될 것을 말씀하고 있습니다.
2) 아담과 하와의 타락도 눈 때문에 왔습니다.
하나님께서는 아담과 하와를 창조하신 후 에덴동산에 두시고 선악과를 절대 따먹지 말 것을 명령하셨지만, 아담과 하와는 그 나무를 바라본즉 탐심이 생겨 그만 유혹에 넘어가고 말았던 것입니다. 창 3:6에서 하와가 금지된 선악나무를 “본즉” 먹음직하고 보암직하고 지혜롭게 할 만큼 탐스럽기도 한 나무로 그녀의 눈에 비쳤던 것입니다. 이처럼 하와의 눈이 잘못되어서, 벌써 이들은 타락의 길로 치닫고 있었던 것입니다.
3) 예수님 당시의 이스라엘 백성들도 잘못된 눈을 가졌습니다.
요 9장 말씀을 볼 때, 예수님께서 날 때부터 보지 못하는 소경을 고쳐 주셨지만, 이스라엘 백성들은 이것을 참으로 영적인 눈을 뜨게 해 주는 축복의 표적으로 보지 못했습니다. 많은 선지자와 의인이 보고자 했던 예수님이 오셨지만, 이스라엘 백성들뿐 아니라 제자들까지도 주님이 어떠한 분이신지를 제대로 보지 못하는 눈뜬 소경들이었던 것입니다. 그래서 예수님은 “너희 눈은 봄으로, 너희 귀는 들음으로 복이 있도다”(마 13:16)라고 말씀하셨으며, 제대로 깨닫지 못하고 믿지 못하면서 믿는 척하는 당시 종교 지도자들을 향해, “보지 못하는 자들은 보게 하고 보는 자들은 소경이 되게 하려 함이라”라고 말씀하셨습니다(요 9:39-41).
오히려 스스로 아브라함의 자손 됨만을 자랑하는 이스라엘 앞에서, 예수님은 삭개오를 향해 “너도 아브라함의 자손이다” 선언하심으로 순간 아브라함의 자손 이스라엘은 이방으로 만드시고, 예수를 보기 위해 뽕나무에까지 올라간 삭개오는 아브라함의 자손으로 만드시는 역사를 행하셨던 것입니다(눅 19:9).
2. 일곱 눈의 역사
본문 6절에서 어린양은 일곱 눈을 가지고 있다고 말씀하고 있습니다. 이 일곱은 “온 세상에 두루 행하는 여호와의 눈”(슥 4:10)이며, “한 돌에 일곱 눈”(슥 3:9)이며, “일곱 등불이요 일곱 영”(계 4:5)이라고 증거하고 있습니다. 또한, 대하 16:19 말씀을 볼 때, 이 일곱 눈은 온 세상을 감찰하시는 분이라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 그렇다면 이 일곱 눈은 어떠한 것을 보는 눈일까요?
1) 은밀한 데를 다 보시는 눈입니다.
요 1:45-48 말씀을 볼 때, 예수님은 빌립의 전도를 받아 온 나다나엘을 가리켜 “이는 참 이스라엘 사람이라 그 속에 간사한 것이 없도다”라고 말씀합니다. 그와는 대면한 적도 없지만, 예수님은 미리 나다나엘의 중심까지 꿰뚫어 보는 눈을 가지고 계셨던 것입니다. 그 결과로, 나다나엘은 창 32장에서 야곱이 얻은 새 이름, 즉 이스라엘이라는 승리의 이름을 성취한 최초의 사람이 되어, 마지막 심판을 받지 않고 통과하는 축복까지 받게 되었던 것입니다. 그는 예수님으로부터 인정을 받고 새로운 이름을 얻음으로 심판을 통과한 참승리자가 되었던 것입니다. 이처럼 주님의 일곱 눈은 사람의 심장, 폐부를 뚫고 그 은밀한 곳까지 다 보시는 눈입니다(잠 15:3, 렘 23:24).
2) 의(義)를 보시는 눈입니다.
벧전 3:12 말씀을 볼 때, “주의 눈은 의인을 향하시고”라고 증거합니다. 그래서 마지막 심판은 의인 중에서 악인을 골라내는 것입니다. 악인이 의인의 회중에 절대 들지 못합니다. 마 13:49 말씀대로, 천사들이 와서 의인 중에서 악인을 갈라내어 풀무 불에 던지는 것입니다. 그러므로 하나님의 눈동자가 머무는 사람은 하나님의 말씀을 멸시치 않고(잠 13:13), 생명의 양식으로 삼는 의인들인 것입니다.
결론
일곱 눈 되시는 예수님의 눈은 횃불 같고(단10:6), 그 눈이 불꽃 같다(계 1:14, 19:12)고 말씀하고 있습니다. 그렇다면 우리 성도님들은 이러한 일곱 눈과 일곱 뿔, 일곱 영의 권세를 반드시 받아야만 하겠습니다. 그 비결은 기도하는 것이요, 예수님께서 주시는 신령한 안약을 사서 발라야 합니다(계 3:17-18). 그리하여 우리의 타락한 눈을 고쳐 옛사람을 버리고 새사람을 입는 가운데, 오직 하나님의 뜻을 위해서만 우리의 눈을 사용하는 성도님들이 되시기 바랍니다.
