Do you hear the outcry of the blood?
The Memorial Day is a day to commemorate the sacrifice of those who dedicated their lives for
the nation and people. The blood they shed has become the foundation of the nation’s existence
and prosperity. Today’s Scripture text talks about the outcries of the blood of those souls who
were slain for the Word and testimony of God. Like we respond to the outcries of the blood of
the patriots, we must be able to open our ears of faith and listen to the outcries of the blood of the
forefathers of faith who sacrificed for the kingdom of God.
I. Do you hear the outcries of the blood from Abel to Jesus’ Golgotha?
When we are faced with the unprecedented time of tribulation of the End Times (Mt 24:21), no
one can pass through it on his own but God has to save us from it (Rev 3:10). Since the Fall of
Adam, the earth became a cursed land that produced ‘thorns and thistles’ (Gen 3:18). As a result,
the life of hardship with tears of agony and lamentation unfolded before the lives of those who
live on this earth. The Apostle John is testifying the image of judgment that is unfolding when
the seven seals were opened. When the first seal was opened, a white horse came out; and a red
horse came out when the second seal was opened, which hindered peace. With the opening of the
third seal, a black horse came out and spread the famine all over the land, whereas we are faced
with the fear of death when a pale came out as the fourth seal is opened. However, we will
gradually move toward death if we live in this land filled with thorns and thistles. That is why
Jesus said, “You are from below; I am from above,” and told us not to listen to the words of the
earth but trust the Word of God from heaven. He said that we will dwell forever in the kingdom
of God when that happens. After Cain killed his brother Abel, God asked, “Where is your
brother Abel?” God said that your brother’s blood “cries out to me from the ground.” This is
what happened when the fifth seal was opened. The ground opened its mouth to receive his
brother Abel’s blood from his hands. Although Jesus preached the gospel on this earth while
shedding the tears of agony, they said, “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” “It is
only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons” (Mt 12:24), so the
salvation was ultimately fulfilled through the shedding His blood on the cross. Thus, we must
hear and understand the outcries of the blood of the forefathers of faith.
II. Do you hear Mary weeping over the death of her brother Lazarus?
Millions of people were dead or displaced in our nation due to the fratricidal tragedy that began
on June 25, 1950. During the times of Jesus, eighteen people died when the tower fell on them.
Jesus warned them that unless they repent, they too will all perish. Mary, the sister of Lazarus,
wept with tears of agony over her brother’s death, tasted the Lord’s grace, and broke alabaster jar
of very expensive perfume made of pure nard and poured it on Jesus’ head (Mk 14:3). The
reason that Jesus accepted her perfume was because He saw Mary’s tears. The families of those
who were survived by the war wept toward the heavens because they were hopeless, and they
had to struggle through hunger. Jesus wept with Mary as she wept for her dead brother (Jn
11:35). When we look at the painful history of our nation through the eyes of the Lord, do we not
hear the cries of many people in every corner of Korea? When God heard Hagar and her son
Ishmael’s wailing who wandered in the desert with thirst after they were kicked out of
Abraham’s house, He enabled them to find a spring. The tears of Job over the sudden loss of his
ten children in one day, and the sound of his wailing over his mangled body are not just the
problem of Job, but it is also the outcry of our sons and daughters pleading for the fratricidal
tragedy of June 25, and the wailing of parents who have lost their children.
III. Arise and shine, my people!
Do you hear the bloody wails that reverberate in a city surrounded by the enemy forces and ran
out of food, in the terrifying reality where one can survive only if ‘we eat your son today, and
we’ll eat my son tomorrow’? In that desperate and hopeless situation, God granting us a blessing
to shout, “God blessed our nation, and long live our nation!” as the lyrics of our national anthem
proclaimed. That is why He said, “Arise and shine!” (Isa 60:1-3). It has been only hundred years
since the gospel came to Korea, but it is a land stained with blood of many martyrs. God heard
the outcry of the blood of martyrdom and answered them by saying, “Let the blood of your
servants be known before our eyes among the nations” (Ps 79:10). Thus, He promised to the
nation from the East that He will ‘fulfill His will’ (Eze 43:2). In the midst of extreme
circumstances where the nation was on the verge of desperate situation, the sun of righteousness
rose in the hearts of the people who accepted Jesus; and God answered the outcries of the blood
of the martyrs and made them the spiritual East. Thus, God refined and tested those who sought
Him in the furnace of affliction to be born again (Isa 48:10). God granted them the hope to seek
Him in the midst of darkness. When we praise God and give thanks to His holy name, ‘For his
anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime’ (Ps 30:4-5) will be fulfilled.
Conclusion
Like the blood of the sacrificed patriots led to the prosperity of the Republic of
Korea today, the blood of the martyrs is the amazing blood of life that fulfills God’s will. When
saints cry out like the spiritual Mary, God will hear their cries and will forever protect this nation
of the Republic of Korea and the church that He bought with His blood.
피의 호소가 들리는가?
현충일은 나리와 민족을 위해 헌신한 순국선열들의 희생정신을 기리는 날입니다. 그들이 흘린 피가 나라의 존립과 번영의 토대가 되었던 것입니다. 오늘 본문에는 하나님의 말씀과 증거를 위해 죽임을 당한 영혼들의 피의 호소가 나옵니다. 순국선열들의 피의 호소에 응답하듯, 우리는 하나님 나라를 위해 희생한 믿음의 선진들의 피의 호소를 믿음의 귀를 열어 들을 줄 알아야 하겠습니다.
1. 아벨부터 예수님의 골고다 언덕까지, 피의 신원이 들리는가?
마지막 전무후무한 환난의 때를 당하면(마 24:21), 하나님께서 환난의 때를 면하게 해 주셔야지(계 3:10), 사람이 스스로의 힘으로 통과할 자가 아무도 없습니다. 아담 타락 이후 이 땅은 ‘가시와 엉겅퀴’(창 3:18)를 내는 저주받은 곳이 되고 말았습니다. 그로 인해 이 땅에서 살아가는 인생들은 피눈물을 흘리며 탄식하는 고난의 삶이 펼쳐지게 된 것입니다.
사도 요한은 일곱 인을 떼실 때 전개되는 심판의 모습을 우리에게 증거하고 있습니다. 첫째 인을 뗄 때 흰 말이 나오고, 둘째 인을 뗄 때 붉은 말이 나와 화평을 저해합니다. 셋째 인에는 검은 말이 나와 흉년이 온 땅에 퍼지고, 넷째 인을 뗄 때 청황색 말이 나와 죽음의 공포에 직면하게 됩니다. 가시와 엉겅퀴가 퍼진 이 땅에서 살면 이처럼 점점 죽음을 향해 나아가게 됩니다. 그래서 예수님은 “너희들은 땅에서 났고 나는 하늘에서 났다”고 하시면서, 땅의 말을 듣지 말고 하늘에서 난 하나님의 말씀을 믿으라고 하셨습니다. 그러할 때 영원히 하나님의 나라에 거한다고 말씀하셨습니다.
가인이 동생 아벨을 죽이자, 하나님은 “네 동생 아벨이 어디 있느냐?” 물으셨습니다. 하나님은 가인이 죽인 동생 아벨의 피가 “나에게 호소한다”고 말씀하셨습니다. 이것이 다섯째 인을 떼시고 나타난 장면입니다. 땅은 그 입을 벌려 아우 아벨의 피를 받았습니다. 예수님도 피눈물을 흘려 가며 이 땅에서 복음을 전했지만, “나사렛에서 무슨 선한 것이 나겠느냐?”, “저가 귀신의 왕 바알세불을 힘입어(마 12:24) 귀신을 쫓아낸다” 할 때, 결국 십자가의 피 흘림으로 구원이 이루어졌습니다. 그러므로 우리는 믿음의 선진들의 피가 호소하는 그 외침을 듣고 깨달아야만 하겠습니다.
2. 동생 나사로의 죽음 앞에 울고 있는 마리아의 울음 소리가 들리는가?
1950년 6월 25일에 시작된 동족상잔의 비극으로 이 땅에 수백만의 사망자와 이재민이 발생했습니다. 예수님 당시에는 망대가 무너져 열여덟 명이 죽었습니다. 예수님은 누구든지 회개하지 않으면 다 이와 같이 망한다고 경고하셨습니다. 나사로의 누이 마리아는 동생의 죽음 앞에 피눈물로 통곡하다 주님의 은혜를 맛보고, 옥합을 깨뜨려 값진 향유를 예수의 머리에 부었습니다(막 14:3). 예수님께서 그녀의 향유를 받으신 것은 마리아의 눈물을 보았기 때문입니다. 전쟁으로 스러져간 수많은 사람의 가족은 어디 의지할 데 없어 하늘을 향해 눈물짓고, 밥 한 숟갈 제대로 먹지 못해 곯은 배를 부여잡고 삶을 위해 몸부림쳐야 했습니다.
예수님은 죽은 동생을 위해 울고 있는 마리아를 보며 함께 우셨습니다(요 11:35). 우리가 주님의 그 눈으로 우리나라의 아픈 역사를 살펴볼 때, 대한민국 방방곡곡에서 들리는 수많은 민초의 울음소리가 들리지 않습니까? 아브라함의 집에서 쫓겨난 첩 하갈과 그 아들 이스마엘이 목이 타서 사막 가운데 쓰러지며 통곡하는 그 울음소리를 들으시고 하나님은 그들에게 샘을 발견하게 하셨습니다. 하루아침에 십 남매를 잃은 욥의 눈물과, 만신창이가 된 육신을 부여잡고 통곡하는 그 울음소리는 비단 욥 한 사람만의 문제가 아니라, 6·25동란으로 말미암아 호소하는 우리의 아들딸들의 외침이며, 자식 잃은 부모들의 통곡 소리이기도 합니다.
3. 내 백성아, 일어나 빛을 발하라!
적군에 포위되어 먹을 게 떨어진 성안에서 ‘오늘은 내 자식을 잡아먹고, 내일은 네 자식을 잡아먹어’야만 살 수 있는 처참한 현실에서 울려 퍼지는 피의 통곡 소리가 들리십니까? 그 절망의 상황에서 하나님은 애국가 가사처럼 “하나님이 보우하사 우리나라 만세!” 외칠 수 있는 축복을 허락하셨습니다. 그래서 “일어나 빛을 발하라!”(사 60:1-3) 말씀해 주셨습니다.
한국은 복음이 들어온 지 백 년밖에 안 되지만 순교의 피가 많이 묻어 있는 땅입니다. 하나님께서 그 순교의 피의 호소를 들으시고, “주의 종들의 피 흘림 당한 보수를 우리 목전에 열방 중에 알리소서”(시 79:10)라는 말씀에 응답하셨습니다. 그리하여 동방의 나라를 향해 ‘뜻을 이루겠다’ 약속하셨습니다(겔 43:2). 나라가 백척간두에 놓여 있는 절체절명의 위기에서, 예수를 받아들이는 백성들의 마음속에 의의 태양이 떠오르고, 순교자의 피의 호소에 하나님께서 응답하사 신령한 동방으로 삼아 주셨습니다. 그리하여 고난의 풀무 불을 통과하고(사 48:10) 하나님을 찾는 백성들을 연단하여 거듭나게 하셨습니다.
어두운 가운데도 하나님을 찾는 소망을 허락해 주셨습니다. 하나님을 찬송하며 그 거룩한 이름에 감사할 때, ‘그 노염은 잠간이요 은총은 평생이로다’(시 30:4-5)라는 말씀이 성취되었습니다.
결론
순국선열들의 희생의 피가 오늘의 대한민국의 번영을 이루었듯이, 순교자의 피가 하나님의 뜻을 이루는 놀라운 생명의 피가 됩니다. 믿는 성도들이 신령한 마리아처럼 울부짖을 때, 하나님께서 그 눈물의 호소를 들으시고 이 나라 대한민국과 하나님께서 피로 값 주고 사신 교회를 영원히 지켜 주실 것입니다.
