The mystery of the empty tomb
The cross and resurrection are the Alpha and Omega of Christianity as well as the origin and foundation of the Christian faith. Christianity cannot exist without the resurrection of Jesus, and as the Apostle Paul said, “Our preaching is useless and so is your faith. We are then found to be false witnesses about God… If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied” (1Cor 15:14-19).
I. The night of Hades has passed, and a new morning of resurrection has dawned.
The ‘stone tomb’ that our Lord was laid symbolizes injustice, violence, and self-righteousness of religious authority. The anger toward the Lord who was like the enemy to the Jews has created a gigantic stone tomb and incarcerated Him, and it became a prison of despair to the believers. The first day of His death was indeed a hellish night. After a hellish night in which all expectations and hopes had been destroyed and becomes the morning of the ‘day after tomorrow morning,’ the curtain of pitch darkness had disappeared and the boulder that had suppressed heaven and earth had vanished. Thus, the Christian faith is not a one-day faith, but the faith of three-days. When we endure these three days, the true and false will be distinguished. Those who surrendered to the powers of darkness and could not escape from the stone tombs of Hades are not true Christians. Those who endured such hardships and welcomed the third day are the real people of faith. During the time of Jesus, the crowd and even some of His disciples fell before the powers of Hades when they did not have the faith of three-days. The crowd that had experienced the wonders and miracles of Jesus, forgot about the graces they had received, changed their stance and joined the shouting crowd that demanded Jesus be crucified. Judas Iscariot sold his teacher for 30 pieces of silver and died when his intestines spilled out. Peter, who was once called His protege, denied Him 3 times and even cursed him before a rooster crowed. Thomas was tardy for 8 days due to his doubt and was able to believe only by confirming with his own eyes and touching His scars where the nails pierced Him. Likewise, even the crowd who were trapped in the night of Hades were able to welcome the new world as they welcomed the morning of the third day.
II. The bold faith of Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus became the foundation that welcomed the Lord’s resurrection.
When Jesus died on the cross for heresy, all those who once followed Him to this date abandoned Him. They were all afraid that they would suffer as well. However, at that moment, Joseph of Arimathea went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body; and Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes (Jn 19:38-39). Even though they were not His disciples, they buried the Lord in peace by acting boldly according to their belief and to the grace they had received, while everyone else was captured by the night of Hades. Such faith became the building block for the preparation for the Lord’s resurrection. The reason that they were able to overcome the Jews’ threats and fear of death and bury Jesus was because they had complete faith in Him. With the eyes of faith, they knew Jesus as the true Messiah and the Son of God. Jesus died at 3 p.m., and they did all this in 3 hours before 6 p.m. They knew that Jesus came as the Passover Lamb (Exo 12:6), and they clearly believed and knew that this would happen in the End Times, like Abraham sacrificed Isaac on a mountain in Moriah (Gen 22:14). That is why they gave their possessions and life to dedicate themselves and looked upon the Lord like those Israelites who lived when they looked at the bronze snake that Moses made and hung on a pole.
III. Jesus’ resurrection became a new beginning.
When Satan saw Jesus’ death, he thought this was the end and celebrated it, but God fulfilled a new beginning at that grave of death. A new history of mankind and redemption began through the resurrection. Through the resurrection of the Lord, He proclaimed to all nations that the authority of God is greater than the powers of the world. The Lord who became the firstfruit of the resurrection (Rev 14:4), is no longer clothed in sinful flesh but has transfigured into a glorious form (Rev 1:14-16). The resurrected Lord spoke with a voice like thunder, with a rainbow above his head, his face glowed like the sun, his legs were like fiery pillars, and held a little scroll, which was laid open in his hand and gave a loud shout like the roar of a lion (Amos 3:8). Of these, we need to ponder on the seven thunders and the seven rays of the rainbow. The voice of the Lord was like the roar of ‘rushing waters’ (Rev 1:15) and ‘seven thunders’ (Rev 10:3-4). In Ps 29, the word ‘voice of the LORD’ appears 7 times from v3-9. These seven thunders and seven colors of the rainbow symbolize the mystery and authority of the Word of God. When these words were heard, some said they heard the ‘thunders,’ while others heard the ‘sound of an angel’ (Jn 12:28-29). Not only it has a dictionary meaning like the words of a human, but it refers to the Word that contains seven complete meanings. The thunder-like Word contains all the mysteries of God. The sound from heaven becomes beautiful music like the sound of the 7 7 strings of the ‘harps’ (Rev 14:2), and works like ‘hidden manna’ or ‘the Word sealed with 7 seals.’ Thus, it becomes the true food and strength to guide and nurture the saints who believe and live in the faith of resurrection.
Conclusion
The mystery of the empty tomb has abolished the night of Hades and opened a new era for us. In the new era, God is the love that shows mercy so that His people can defeat sin with His Word of 7 thunders and 7 rays of the rainbow. Like the sounds of David’s lyre defeated the evil spirit that troubled Saul, the work of the seven Word that are like the thunders will become the driving force that drive out evil spirits and darkness and triumph with the life of resurrection.
빈 무덤의 신비
십자가와 부활은 기독교의 알파와 오메가요, 기독교 신앙의 근원이자 초석입니다. 기독교는 예수님의 부활이 없다면 존재할 수 없고, 사도 바울이 말한 바대로 “우리의 전파하는 것도 헛것이요 또 너희의 믿음도 헛것이요 우리가 하나님의 거짓 증인으로 발견되리니 … 우리의 바라는 것이 이생뿐이면 모든 사람 가운데 우리가 더욱 불쌍한 자리라”(고전 15:14-19)라는 신세가 될 것입니다.
1. 지옥의 밤은 지나고, 부활의 새 아침이 밝았습니다.
우리 주님이 누우셨던 ‘돌무덤’은 불의와 폭력과 독선적인 교권을 상징합니다. 유대인들에게는 원수 같은 주님을 향한 분노가 거대한 돌무덤을 마련하여 가두었고, 믿는 자에게는 절망의 감옥이 되었습니다. 주님 죽으신 첫째 날은 그야말로 지옥 같은 밤이었습니다. 모든 기대와 희망이 무너진 지옥의 밤이 지나고 모레 아침이 될 때, 캄캄한 어둠의 장막이 무너지고 천지를 억누른 바위는 사라지고 말았습니다.
그러므로 기독교의 신앙은 하루가 아니라 삼 일의 신앙입니다. 이 삼 일을 견딜 때 참과 거짓이 구별됩니다. 어둠의 권세 앞에 굴복하여 지옥의 돌무덤에서 빠져나오지 못하는 자는 참된 기독교 신앙인이 아닙니다. 그 고난을 견디고 삼 일을 맞이한 자가 진짜 신앙입니다.
예수님 당시 수많은 군중과 심지어 일부 제자들마저도 삼 일의 신앙을 갖지 못할 때 지옥의 권세 앞에 무너지고 말았습니다. 예수님을 통해 기사와 이적을 체험하였던 수많은 군중은 대세에 편승하여 받은 은혜를 다 잊어버리고 예수를 십자가에 못 박으라고 소리치는 무리에 가담하였습니다. 가룟 유다는 스승을 은 30에 팔아먹고 창자가 터져 죽었습니다. 수제자라 하는 베드로는 닭 울기 전에 세 번이나 부인하며 저주까지 하였습니다. 도마는 의심으로 8일 지각생이 되었고, 직접 눈으로 확인하고 못 자국을 만져 봐야만 겨우 믿었습니다.
하지만, 이처럼 지옥의 밤에 갇힌 무리도 제삼일 아침을 맞아 다 새로운 세계를 맞이하였습니다.
2. 아리마대 요셉과 니고데모의 담대한 신앙이 주님의 부활을 맞이하는 초석이 되었습니다.
예수께서 이단으로 몰려 십자가에 달려 돌아가시자, 지금까지 그분을 따르던 모든 자가 다 도망갔습니다. 같은 화를 당할까 두려움에 빠졌습니다. 그러나 그 순간 아리마대 요셉은 빌라도에게 가서 예수님의 시신을 달라고 요구하고, 니고데모는 몰약과 침향 섞은 것을 가지고 왔습니다(요 19:38-39). 모두가 다 지옥의 밤에 사로잡혀 있을 때, 이들은 제자도 아니지만 믿는 바대로, 받은 은혜대로 담대하여 행동함으로써 주님을 평안히 장사지내 드렸습니다. 이러한 믿음이 주님의 부활을 준비하는 초석이 된 것입니다. 이들이 유대인들의 위협과 죽음의 공포를 이기고 예수님을 장사지낼 수 있었던 것은 그분에 대한 온전한 믿음이 있었기 때문입니다. 믿음의 눈으로 예수님을 참메시아요 하나님의 아들로 알았습니다. 오후 3시에 돌아가시고 6시 전까지 3시간의 짧은 기간에 행한 일입니다. 이들은 예수님이 유월절 어린양으로 오신 분임을 알았고(출 12:6), 아브라함이 모리아의 한 산에서 이삭을 바치듯, 끝날에도 이러한 일이 일어날 것을 분명히 믿고 알았습니다(창 22:14). 그래서 그들은 모세가 놋뱀을 만들어 장대에 달았을 때 그것을 쳐다보는 자마다 다 산 것처럼, 그러한 믿음으로 주님을 바라보며 자신들의 물질과 생명을 바쳐 헌신하였던 것입니다.
3. 예수님의 부활은 새로운 시작이 되었습니다.
사단은 예수님의 죽음을 보고 끝이라고 생각하며 서로 축하하였지만, 하나님은 그 사망의 무덤에서 새로운 시작을 이루셨습니다. 바로 부활을 통해 새로운 인류 역사와 구속사가 시작된 것입니다.
주님의 부활로 인해, 세상의 권세보다 하나님의 권세가 더 크다는 것을 만방에 선포하셨습니다. 부활의 첫 열매(계14:4)가 되신 주님은 이제 더 이상 죄악된 육신을 입으신 분이 아니라 영광의 모습으로 변화하셨습니다(계 1:14-16). 부활하신 주님은 천둥 같은 음성으로 말씀하시며, 머리 위에는 무지개가 있고, 얼굴은 해와 같이 빛나고, 그 발은 불기둥 같고, 펴 놓인 작은 책의 말씀을 사자의 부르짖는 것처럼 담대하게 외치시는 분입니다(암 3:8).
이 중에서 우리는 일곱 우레와, 무지개의 일곱 빛에 대해 상고해 봐야 합니다. 주님의 음성은 ‘많은 물소리’(계 1:15) 같으며 ‘일곱 우레’(계 10:3-4)와 같습니다. 시편 29편에는 3-9절까지 ‘여호와의 소리’가 일곱 번 나옵니다. 이 일곱 우레와 일곱 색깔은 하나님의 말씀의 신비와 권위를 상징합니다. 이 말씀을 들을 때, 어떤 이는 ‘우뢰’ 소리로, 또 어떤 이는 ‘천사의 말’(요 12:28-29)로 듣기도 하였습니다. 이는 사람의 말처럼 사전적 의미 하나만 가진 것이 아니라, 일곱 가지 온전한 뜻이 담겨 있는 말씀을 가리킵니다.
하나의 우레와 같은 말씀에 하나님의 비밀이 다 담겨 있습니다. 하늘에서 나는 소리가 ‘거문고’(계 14:2)의 일곱 현의 소리처럼 아름다운 음악이 되어, 마치 ‘감추었던 만나’나 ‘일곱 인으로 봉한 말씀’과 같이 역사합니다. 그래서 부활 신앙을 믿고 살아가는 성도들을 인도하고 양육하는 참된 양식이요 힘이 됩니다.
결론
빈 무덤의 신비는 우리에게 지옥의 밤을 깨뜨리고 새 시대를 열었습니다. 새 시대에 하나님은 일곱 우레와, 무지개의 일곱 빛 같은 말씀으로 당신의 백성들이 죄와 싸워 승리하도록 긍휼히 여겨 주시는 사랑입니다. 다윗의 거문고 타는 소리가 사울을 번뇌케 한 악령을 물리쳤던 것처럼, 우레와 같은 일곱 말씀의 역사가 모든 악령과 어둠을 물리치고 부활의 새 생명으로 승리하는 원동력이 됩니다.
