The winter is past.
The Book of Song of Songs, which sang the love between King Solomon and the Shulammite woman, is the profound Word that sang the spiritual love between Jesus Christ and the saints who believe in Him. If we were to apply v11 of today’s Scripture text, “The winter is past” to the work of God’s salvation, it tells us that a warm spring of faith filled with God’s grace and love is coming after the sinful winter. Through today’s message, I sincerely hope that our lives will forever be filled with the spring spirit of peace without winter.
I. The marching season comes after winter.
In Korea, spring is called the ‘pleasant days of March,’ and in the West, the 3rd month which kicks off spring is called ‘March.’ The reason that Spring was expressed as March which means ‘to march,’ is because the buds that break through the frozen ground resembled marching. Moreover, the ‘first season’ is called ‘spring’ in English. It literally means “to spring forth, burst forth, or jump upward” like a spring. We must live a life of faith that springs forth after winter, no matter how strong the forces of evil weigh us down. Another meaning of the word ‘spring’ is ‘youth.’ The word youth contains the meaning of masculine strength and toughness, resilience, new energy and the driving force to complete any task. It indeed is the true identity of spring that arrived after winter. It also refers to the image of the Lord who confidently approaches us to save us. This phrase, ‘My dove in the clefts of the rock,’ is a metaphor for the Lord who is the Rock of Ages, is becoming the salvation of the saints who were expressed as doves. In other words, both hands and feet that are studded with nails, and the scar on the head with the thorny crown are the ‘clefts of the rock.’ In order to save a dove trapped at the tip of a cliff, God sent His Son Jesus to this earth to come to us while enduring the sacrifice and the pain of his flesh being torn and split. Because his image is powerful like a spring that bounces forth and confident like the march of an army, we say the Spring is the season of marching.
II. The season of love comes after winter.
The theme of the Book of Song of Songs is ‘love.’ God’s passionate love melts the frozen earth and brings a season of love. Even John, who was called the Apostle of Love, praised like the theme of Song of Songs, “Let us love one another” (1Jn 4:7). This love is the true love that God has shown us. It is ‘love that belongs to God.’ It is said that we must love one another with God’s love because He is love, and He first loved us. Hence, anyone who received such love but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness (1Jn 2:9-11). Love can never be done alone. Like Solomon said to the Church which is the bride of Christ, “Arise, my darling, come with me.” love is formed when two are clashed and becomes one. It is about greeting one another with the love of Christ, sacrificing and breaking myself for the sake of the other. If one uses love to make money or gain profit, it is all fake. True love mends and melts our broken hearts that had been scarred all winter and sows the seeds of holy life like the Lord who sheds the last drop of his precious blood on the cross. Such love was realized early in the community of the Early Church mentioned in the Book of Acts. All the believers were together and had everything in common, giving up their own greed and possessiveness to share with each other in common (Acts 2:44). The fruit of such love that the praise to God and the number of people who were saved were increased daily. Jesus delivered us from the grave of death and died for us instead. The love of the Lord who loved us even to the point of death, is indeed the driving force that melts the cold winter and brings spring.
III. Let us all rise and come with me after winter.
Spring is the season of initiation. It means to ‘stand up.’ One cannot go to a new place of hope by sitting down and speaking with his mouth. Hence, everyone first ‘stands up’ after winter and runs together toward the spring of hope that God speaks of. At the time of Exodus, the Israelites ate the Passover lamb while ‘standing up’ and left Egypt for Canaan; and the Prophet Isaiah said, “Arise,” shine, for your light has come (Isa 60:1). Like spring that breaks through the ice and pierces through the frozen earth, we must rise up, break open the gates of death, and run toward the amazing miracle of living without dying, both spiritually and physically. Now, our Green Hill Church of Orlando must prepare to welcome spiritual spring. Let us open our hearts to the spring of faith and sing with a beautiful new song. The spring of Christ’s love on the cross will never come to the hardened hearts. It is only a dismal valley of death, without the news of spring. We must hold on to the Word of God which says, “Arise, come with me” (SoS 2:10), and stand up together. It is time to set off toward the homeland of the Word. The spring of the resurrection of our Lord has finally arrived. This is the time where all things and life rejuvenate and arise. Like the lame man got up and walked, and a man who had been sick for 38 years picked up his mat and walked, we must stir those who have been dormant and stride forward together. That is why spring is the season of liveliness and invigorating, the season of new beginning.
Conclusion
We say that birds and chickens ‘cry,’ but the Bible says they ‘sing.’ Everything cries and groans in pain during winter, but everything wakes up, sing and praise God when bitter winter passes and warm spring comes. I sincerely hope that your household will be overflowing with such season of blessing, the blessing of a warm spring full of the love of Christ.
겨울이 지나고
솔로몬왕과 술람미 여인의 사랑을 노래한 아가서는 예수 그리스도와 그분을 믿는 성도들 간의 영적 사랑을 노래한 심오한 말씀입니다. 이 말씀 중 본문 11절의 “겨울도 지나고”라는 내용을 하나님의 구원 역사에 적용하자면, 죄악된 겨울이 지나고 하나님의 은혜와 사랑의 기운이 불어오는 따뜻한 신앙의 봄이 오고 있음을 말해 주고 있습니다. 오늘 이 말씀을 통해, 우리의 삶에 세세 무궁토록 겨울이 없이 평안의 봄기운이 충만하시길 바랍니다.
1. 겨울이 지나고 행진하는 계절이 옵니다.
우리나라에서는 봄을 ‘춘삼월 호시절’이라 하며, 서양에서는 봄이 시작되는 3월을 ‘마치’(March)라고 하였습니다. 봄을 ‘행진하다’라는 뜻의 march로 표현한 것은, 얼었던 땅을 뚫고 나오는 새싹들이 마치 행진하는 것처럼 보였기 때문입니다.
또한, ‘봄’을 영어로는 ‘스프링’(spring)이라고 합니다. 이는 말 그대로 용수철처럼 “튕겨 오르다, 터져 나오다, 터뜨리다”라는 뜻입니다. 아무리 강한 악의 세력이 우리를 짓누르고 있어도, 겨울이 지나면 다시 튕겨 오르는 신앙생활을 해야 합니다.
‘스프링’이라는 말이 담고 있는 또 다른 의미는 ‘청춘’입니다. 청춘이란 말에는 남자다운 강건함과 탄력, 그리고 새 기운과 어떤 일을 할 수 있는 원동력을 제공한다는 내용이 담겨 있습니다. 바로 겨울이 지나고 찾아온 봄의 실체입니다. 우리를 구원하시기 위해 위풍당당하게 다가오시는 주님의 모습을 뜻하기도 합니다.
‘바위틈 낭떠러지 은밀한 곳에 있는 나의 비둘기야’라는 말씀은 만세 반석 되시는 주께서 비둘기로 비유된 성도의 구원이 되심을 비유하고 있습니다. 즉, 못이 박힌 양손 양발과 가시관을 쓴 머리의 상처가 ‘바위틈’입니다. 낭떠러지 끝에 있는 비둘기 한 마리를 구원하시기 위해 하나님은 아들 예수를 이 땅에 보내어 몸이 찢기고 갈라지는 아픔과 희생을 감당하며 우리를 향해 나아오셨습니다. 그 모습이 마치 튀어 오르는 용수철처럼 힘이 있고, 군대의 위풍당당한 행진의 모습과도 같기에, 봄은 행진의 계절입니다.
2. 겨울이 지나면 사랑의 계절이 옵니다.
아가서의 주제는 바로 ‘사랑’입니다. 하나님의 뜨거운 사랑은 꽁꽁 언 대지를 녹이고 사랑의 계절을 가져옵니다. 사랑의 사도라 불렸던 요한도 아가서의 주제처럼 “사랑하는 자들아, 우리가 서로 사랑하자!”(요일 4:7)라고 노래하고 있습니다. 이 사랑은 하나님께서 우리에게 보여 주신 참된 사랑입니다. ‘하나님께 속한 사랑’입니다. 하나님은 사랑 자체이시고, 그분이 먼저 우리를 사랑하셨은즉 우리도 그분의 사랑으로 서로 사랑하는 것이 마땅하다고 하였습니다. 이런 사랑을 받았으면서도 형제를 미워하는 자는 지금까지 어두움 가운데 있는 자입니다(요일 2:9-11).
사랑은 결코 혼자 할 수 없습니다. 솔로몬이 그리스도의 신부 된 교회를 향해서 “사랑하는 나의 아내야 나와 함께 가자” 한 것처럼, 사랑은 서로 부딪쳐서 하나를 이루는 것입니다. 그리스도의 사랑으로 인사를 나누고 상대를 위해 나 자신을 희생하고 깨뜨리는 것입니다. 사랑을 이용하여 돈이나 벌려 하고, 이익을 얻으려 한다면 전부 가짜입니다. 참된 사랑은 주님처럼 십자가에 달려 마지막 피 한 방울까지 흘려 겨우내 상한 우리의 심령을 녹이고 거룩한 생명의 씨를 뿌려 주는 것입니다.
이러한 사랑은 사도행전적 교회의 공동체에서 일찍이 실현된 바가 있습니다. 자기의 욕심과 소유욕을 깨뜨려서 함께 나누고 모든 물건을 서로 통용하였습니다(행 2:44). 그 사랑의 열매는 하나님에 대한 찬미와 구원 받는 사람들이 날마다 더해지는 것이었습니다. 우리를 사망의 무덤에서 건져 내시고 대신 들어가셨습니다. 죽기까지 사랑하신 주님의 이 사랑이야말로 추운 겨울을 녹이고 봄을 불러오는 원동력입니다.
3. 겨울이 지나면 일어나서 함께 달려갑시다.
봄은 출발의 계절입니다. 출발은 곧 ‘일어섬’을 의미합니다. 앉아서 입으로 말한다고 새로운 소망의 장소로 갈 수는 없습니다. 그러므로 겨울이 지나면 모든 사람은 먼저 ‘일어서서’ 하나님께서 말씀하시는 소망의 봄을 향해 함께 달려갑니다.
출애굽 때도 ‘일어서서’ 유월절 양을 먹고 애굽을 떠나 가나안으로 향했으며, 이사야 선지자도 ‘일어나서’ 빛을 발하라(사 60:1) 말씀하고 있습니다. 얼음을 깨치고, 언 땅을 뚫고 봄이 솟아오르는 것처럼 일어나서 사망의 문을 박차고 영육 간에 죽지 않고 사는 놀라운 기적을 향해 달려가야 합니다.
이제 우리 평강제일교회는 신령한 봄맞이를 해야 합니다. 신앙의 봄을 향해 마음의 문을 열고 아름다운 새 노래로 찬양합시다. 굳어진 마음에는 결코 그리스도의 십자가 사랑의 봄이 오지 않습니다. 그곳은 봄의 소식도 들리지 않고 음침한 사망의 골짜기일 뿐입니다. ‘일어나서 함께 가자’(아 2:10)라는 말씀만을 붙들고, 다 같이 일어나야 합니다. 말씀의 본향을 향해 이제 출발할 때가 됐습니다. 드디어 우리 주님의 부활의 봄이 온 것입니다. 이때는 모든 만물과 생명이 일어나는 때입니다. 앉은뱅이가 일어나 걷고, 38년 된 병자가 자리를 들고 걸어갔던 것처럼, 지금까지 지구를 베개 삼아 꿈쩍 않고 누워 있던 자들을 일으켜 세워 함께 전진해야 합니다. 그래서 봄은 약동의 계절이며, 출발의 계절인 것입니다.
결론
우리는 새나 닭이 ‘운다’고 하지만, 성경은 ‘노래한다’라고 표현하고 있습니다. 겨울에는 모든 것이 고통 가운데 울부짖고 있지만, 그 겨울도 지나고 따스한 봄이 오면 만물이 깨어 하나님을 찬양하고 노래하게 됩니다. 이러한 축복의 계절, 그리스도의 사랑이 넘치는 따스한 봄의 축복이 여러분의 가정에 충만하시기를 바랍니다.
