The great prayer of Joshua
The great prayer of Joshua to stop the sun and moon is a historically unprecedented powerful prayer. It is recorded that God answered Joshua’s great prayer and “There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the LORD listened to a human being” (v14). Today, I sincerely hope that we too become the great prayer warriors that receive answers from God like Joshua.
I. Joshua’s prayer of faith that stopped the sun.
As the people of Gibeon made a treaty of peace with Israel, Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem joined forces with the king of four neighboring nations and attacked Gibeon. Hence, Joshua led his army up to Gilgal and slaughtered the five kings of the Amorites for the Gibeonites who asked for help to Israel. God hurled large hailstones, so more of them died from the hail than were killed by the swords of the Israelites. However, in a situation where they were bound to miss the enemies when the sun sets no matter how greatly they fought, Joshua asked God to hold still the sun. With the grace of God who heard Joshua’s prayer, the army of Israel was able to defeat the armies of the five Amorite kings. It is because God has brightly shone the light of glory and the light of victory upon Israel. As you can see, Israel was protected and blessed in the light of God. It is because Jesus Christ is an eternal light. The Prophet Malachi spoke of the blessing of the rising “sun of righteousness” (Mal 4:1), and the Apostle John introduces Jesus as “everlasting light” (Jn 1:1-5, 8:12, 9:4). The Apostle Paul testified, “For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves,” (Col 1:13). Likewise, the saints who have the eternal light will receive the grace to overcome all circumstances and walk in the light even in the darkness. If the sun was still there high up in the sky when it was supposed to set during the time of Joshua, this certainly is a historical fact. If we have the ability to pray like Joshua, then we will walk in the light and become the children of light who dwell in the light even if the sun, moon, and stars lose their light after the frightening seven-year tribulation. I sincerely hope that all of us will become the powerful man of prayers who will never let that light fade away.
II. The lesson of the Gibeonites –The importance of prayer.
In a war between Joshua and the five kings of the Amorites, the ‘Gibeonites’ were actually involved. The focus of the matter is also on the fact that it reminds them of the ‘importance of prayer.’ When the people of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai, they quickly resorted to a ruse, acted as if they came from a distant land and made peace with Israel. At this time, Joshua “did not seek the counsel of the LORD” (Jos 9:14) but made peace and established a treaty with them based only on their outward appearance. As Gibeon made peace with Israel, the Amorite kings joined forces to attack Gibeon; and the Gibeonites asked Israel for help on the basis of a peach treaty they made with Israel (Jos 10:9). Thus, the cause of this war lies on the fact that Joshua did not seek the counsel of God if we trace back. However, when a war broke out, Joshua became a prayer warrior and had the courage to ask God to stop the sun and moon. The prayer has now led the war to victory that was caused due to an absence of prayer. The faith of Joshua such as this is like that of Peter and John who commanded a man who was lame from birth to “Get up and walk” (Acts 3:6). In Peter’s case, many sick were brought to him so that at least his ‘shadow’ might fall on them (Acts 5:15). Daniel’s three friends were protected when they were thrown into a blazing furnace for not bowing down before an idol. All of these are the examples of the man of faith and the man of prayers like Joshua who stopped the sun. If we have such faith, we do not need to trust any man; and if we only trust our God Almighty, nothing is impossible or have nothing to fear.
III. The adversaries like the Amalekites who bullied the chosen people.
If the five kings of the Amorites were enemies who attacked the chosen people of Israel using the Gibeonites as excuses, God commanded the Israelites to defeat the Amalekites because they persecuted the Israelites during the wilderness journey. God commanded King Saul to ‘defeat the Amalekites’ 400 years after the Exodus. However, King Saul lost his throne to David when he did not obey His commands with his human thoughts. When Joshua prayed to stop the sun, Israel received the light of grace and slaughtered the Amorites, but the light of the sun did not reach the Amorites but became the light of death instead. Likewise, there are no God-fearing hearts to those adversaries such as the Amalekites and Amorites who attack and interfere with the chosen people. The light of righteousness will never shine upon them as a result. There are many people like these Amalekites around us. Their hindrance got in the way of executing the will of the Lord. However, there should be a prayer to God such as that of Joshua at a time like this. Just as God allowed “the nation to avenge itself on its enemies” (Jos 10:13) to Joshua’s prayer, we too must defeat the Amalekites around us with our prayers. Moreover, we must realize that we become an Amalekite when we do not believe; so, we should always examine ourselves and repent.
Conclusion
Just as Joshua, who made a mistake by not praying but later stopped the sun and moon with prayer and defeated the Amorites, we too should be the great people of prayer like Joshua. With the prayers of faith, we must always defeat the Amalekites that interfere with the will of God and attack the chosen people, and we must stay alert so that we ourselves do not stand in the place of hindering the will of God.
여호수아의 위대한 기도
태양과 달을 멈추라고 하는 여호수아의 위대한 기도는 역사적으로 전례를 찾아볼 수 없는 전무후무한 능력의 기도입니다. 하나님이 여호수아의 위대한 기도를 들어주셔서, “여호와께서 사람의 목소리를 들으신 이 같은 날은 전에도 없었고 후에도 없었나니”(14절)라고 기록하고 있습니다. 오늘 우리도 여호수아처럼 하나님께 응답받는 위대한 기도의 용사들이 되시기 바랍니다.
1. 태양을 머무르게 한 여호수아의 믿음의 기도
기브온이 이스라엘과 화친을 맺자, 예루살렘 왕 아도니세덱은 이웃 네 나라 왕과 연합하여 공격을 가했습니다. 이에 이스라엘에게 도움의 손을 내민 기브온 족속을 위해, 여호수아가 군대를 이끌고 길갈에 올라가서 아모리 족속의 다섯 왕을 도륙하였습니다. 하나님께서 큰 우박을 보내셨으므로, 이스라엘 자손의 칼에 죽은 자보다 우박에 죽은 자가 더욱 많을 정도였습니다. 그러나 아무리 그들을 도륙해도 해가 지면 놓칠 수밖에 없는 상황에서, 여호수아는 해를 붙잡아 주시기를 하나님께 간구했던 것입니다.
이러한 여호수아의 기도를 들으신 하나님의 은혜로 인해, 이스라엘은 아모리 다섯 왕의 군대들을 다 물리칠 수가 있었습니다. 이는 하나님께서 이스라엘에게 영광의 빛, 승리의 빛을 환하게 비춰 주셨기 때문입니다. 이스라엘은 이처럼 하나님의 빛 속에서 보호와 축복을 받았습니다. 이는 예수 그리스도가 영원한 빛이 되시기 때문입니다. 말라기 선지자는 ‘의의 태양’(말 4:1)이 떠오르는 축복을 말씀하였고, 사도 요한은 예수님을 ‘영원한 빛’(요 1:1-5, 8:12, 9:4)으로 소개하고 있습니다. 사도 바울은 “우리를 흑암의 권세에서 건져 내사 그의 사랑의 아들의 나라”(골 1:13)로 인도하셨다고 증거하였습니다.
이처럼 영원한 빛을 가지고 있는 성도는, 모든 환경을 이기고 어둠 속에서도 빛 가운데 걸어갈 수 있는 은혜를 입게 됩니다. 여호수아 당시에 해가 져야 할 시간에 여전히 중천에 떠 있었다면 이는 분명히 역사적인 사실입니다. 무서운 7년 대환난이 와서 해와 달과 별이 빛을 잃는다 해도, 여호수아와 같은 기도의 능력이 있다면 빛 속에 걸어가고 빛 속에서 살아가는 빛의 아들들이 됩니다. 결코, 그 빛이 물러가지 않는 능력 있는 기도의 사람들이 되시기 바랍니다.
2. 기브온 족속의 교훈 – 기도의 중요성
여호수아와 아모리 왕들과의 전쟁에는 사실 ‘기브온 족속’이 개입돼 있습니다. 그 문제의 핵심은 또한 ‘기도’의 중요성을 일깨워 주는 것입니다. 기브온 주민들은 여호수아가 여리고와 아이 성에서 행한 일을 듣고 꾀를 내어 먼 나라에서 온 것처럼 속여 화친을 맺었습니다. 이때 여호수아는 “여호와께 묻지 아니하고”(수 9:14) 그들의 겉모습만 보고 화친하여 조약을 체결했습니다. 기브온이 이스라엘과 화친하자 아모리 왕들이 동맹을 맺어 공격할 때, 기브온은 화친조약을 근거로 도움을 요청했습니다(수 10:9). 그러니, 거슬러 올라가면 이 전쟁의 원인은 여호수아가 하나님께 묻지 않았기 때문입니다.
그런데 정작 전쟁이 벌어졌을 때, 여호수아는 기도의 용사로 변하여 감히 태양과 달을 향해 머물 것을 간구하였습니다. 기도하지 않아 발생한 전쟁에서, 이제는 기도를 통해 승리로 이끈 것입니다. 여호수아의 이러한 믿음은, 나면서부터 앉은뱅이 된 자를 향해 “일어나 걸으라”(행 3:6)고 외친 베드로와 요한의 믿음과도 같습니다. 베드로의 경우는 ‘그림자’(행 5:15)라도 덮이길 바라는 마음으로 병자들이 몰려왔습니다. 다니엘의 세 친구는 사신 우상에게 절하지 아니할 때 뜨거운 풀무 불 속에서도 보호하심을 입었습니다. 이들 모두가 여호수아처럼 태양을 멈추게 하는 믿음의 사람, 기도의 사람들입니다. 이런 믿음만 있다면 어느 사람도 믿을 필요 없이, 오직 만군의 주 여호와 하나님만 믿으면 두려울 게 없고, 불가능이 없습니다.
3. 선민을 방해한 아말렉 같은 훼방꾼
아모리의 다섯 왕이 기브온 족속을 핑계로 선민 이스라엘을 공격한 대적이었다면, 아말렉 또한 광야 노정 중에 이스라엘을 박해하였기에 하나님은 그들을 진멸하라고 하셨습니다. 출애굽 이후 400년이 지나 사울왕에게 ‘아말렉 진멸’을 명령하셨습니다. 그러나 사울왕이 인간적인 생각으로 이에 순종하지 않았을 때, 결국 그 왕위를 빼앗고 다윗을 왕 삼으셨던 것입니다.
여호수아가 기도하여 태양을 멈추게 하였을 때, 이스라엘은 은혜의 빛을 받아 아모리 족속들을 도륙하였지만, 그들에게는 그 태양 빛이 미치지 않아 죽음의 빛이 되었습니다. 마찬가지로, 아모리 족속이나 아말렉 족속같이 선민을 방해하고 공격하는 자들에게는 하나님을 두려워하는 마음이 없습니다. 그 결과로 그들에게는 결코 의의 빛이 임하지 않습니다.
우리 주변에는 이러한 아말렉 같은 족속들이 많습니다. 그들의 방해로 인해, 주의 뜻을 행하는 데 걸림돌이 됩니다. 그러나 그럴 때일수록 여호수아처럼 여호와께 고하는 기도가 있어야 합니다. 여호수아의 기도에 하나님께서 “백성이 그 대적에게 원수를 갚도록”(수 10:13) 하셨던 것처럼, 우리도 기도로 우리 주변의 아말렉을 물리쳐야 합니다. 또한, 믿지 못할 때 나 자신이 아말렉이 된다는 사실을 깨닫고, 항상 자신을 살펴보고 회개해야 합니다.
결론
기도하지 않아 실수했던 여호수아가 기도로 태양과 달을 멈추게 하고 아모리 족속들을 물리쳤던 것처럼, 우리도 여호수아와 같은 위대한 기도의 사람이 되어야겠습니다. 뜻을 방해하고 선민을 공격하는 아말렉 족속 같은 방해꾼들을 믿음의 기도로 물리치고, 나 자신이 뜻을 방해하는 자리에 서지 않도록 늘 깨어 있어야 합니다.
