The remnant
When we see the v5 of today’s Scripture text states, “There is a remnant chosen by grace,” we
must become the saints who enter the order of the remnant until the end overflowing with
infinite joy and excitement when we encounter the Word of the cross that the Lord shed His
precious blood on the cross for our sins. When we understand this Word, we can survive as the
remnant and realize that every step we take and every breath we breathe is through the great
grace of God.
I. The remnant is the one who offers ‘living worship.’
In the year of King Uzziah’s death, the Prophet Isaiah was deeply shocked in his heart. It is
because he found the rebellious acts of Israel and only wounds, welts and open sores from the
soles of their feet to the top of their heads while he experienced the spectacular sight of the
seraphim (Isa 1:5-6). There was nothing good under heaven because greed was acquired with
dishonest scales. In this situation, the Prophet Isaiah replied, “Here am I. Send me!” when he
heard the voice saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” (Isa 6:8-12). This means
that while everyone else turned away from the voice of God and left Him, only the Prophet
Isaiah remained until the end. Inspired by this, the Apostle Paul testified in Rom 9:27, “Though
the number of the Israelites be like the sand by the sea, only the remnant will be saved.”
Moreover, although Simeon and Levi committed sin of using circumcision to kill the people of
Shechem, the tribe of Levi became the tribe of priests when they fought for God and killed about
3000 men when the Israelites worshipped the golden calf in the wilderness (Exo 32:26-29). As
soon as Moses said, the tribe of Levi sided with the Word and obeyed with “Amen.” Jesus also
said, “I know that his command leads to eternal life” (Jn 12:50). Likewise, it is indeed the living
worship to obey immediately to the Word and to stand before the Word until the end with the
attitude of “Here I am.” Only those who offer the living worship can become the remnant in the
end and obey the will of the Word.
II. The remnant is the one who thinks of the ‘truth of the Word.’
The ‘truth of the Word’ here refers to “natural or as is.” It means that only those who surrender
their sinful appearance before the Lord without fabrications or pretense will be the remnant until
the end. The Sadducees and Pharisees dragged the woman who was caught in the act of adultery
and brought her to the Lord. To those who expected that she would be stoned to death pursuant
to the law, Jesus stooped and wrote on the ground and said, “Let any one of you who is without
sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” They could not say a word but left as they put the stone
on the ground; and only Jesus was left with the woman still standing there (Jn 8:9). Jesus gave a
‘thought’ to her. The woman thought, ‘I will be stoned to death now,’ but the crowd left her and
Jesus said, “Has no one condemned you?” and said “Then neither do I condemn you” (Jn 8:10-
11). In fact, the first person to leave would have been the woman who had committed this
shameful sin. However, she stayed until everyone was gone and stood before the Lord. This is
what is great about the adulterous woman. She neither tried to hide the fact that she had
committed sin nor tried to make excuses but stood before the Lord with the truth. When a sinner
stood before the Lord, she heard the words of blessing, “Neither do I condemn you.” This Word
of blessing remained in her heart and continues to speak to all mankind to this day. Before the
Pharisees, the iniquity of the adulterous woman and her existence are all real. However, when we
bring our sinful image before the Lord without lies or deceptions, we will be blessed with the
Words of blessing, “Rest assured, my words have forgiven your sins.” Such person can become a
remnant. Let us be a remnant who stand before the Lord with true faith without deceitfulness.
III. The remnant is the one who overcomes with faith.
When tribulation comes and persecution intensifies in the End Times, the grace of the love of
the cross is torn to pieces. In such cases, we must not be confident that we are the only remnant,
but we must reexamine whether we can believe until the end and whether we are loyal to our
faith, so that we can become victors of faith. Rev 7:14-15 speaks about “those who have come
out of the great tribulation.” Even in the days of Elijah, when Elijah thought he was the only one
left when everyone else worshipped Baal, God told him that there were “7000 men in Israel—all
whose knees have not bowed down to Baal.” However, even these 7,000 are too small compared
to the total number of Israelites. Likewise, we are weak who are unable to endure or keep the
faith until the end. Hence, when we take Jesus, who is the Stone of Zion, as our refuge and
shield, we can overcome tribulation to the end and become a remnant who comes out dressed in
white robe. As the Apostle Paul said, “See what this godly sorrow has produced in you” (2Cor
7:11), we must deeply fathom the fervent zeal and eagerness contained in ‘how much.’ Only
those who triumph with such faith are the remnant to the end.
Conclusion
Those who have overcome the great tribulation and entered the order of the
remnant in the Bible in the end are those who have come before the Lord as their true self and
have received the resolution and forgiveness of their sins. As a result, they offered the living
worship and kept their faith with great zeal. I sincerely hope that all of you will be the saints of
the Green Hill who stand in the order of the remnant.
남은 자
본문 5절에서 “이제도 은혜로 택하심을 따라 남은 자가 있느니라”라고 말씀하신 것을 볼 때, 십자가에서 우리의 죄를 위해 보혈을 흘려 주신 주님의 십자가 말씀에 마주쳐서 한없는 기쁨과 희열이 넘쳐, 끝까지 남은 자의 반열에 서는 성도가 되어야겠습니다.
이 말씀을 깨달을 때 나의 한 발자국 움직이는 것, 한 모금 숨을 쉬는 것도 하나님의 크신 은혜임을 깨닫고 끝나지 살아남을 수가 있습니다.
1. 남은 자는 ‘산 예배’를 드리는 자입니다.
웃시야왕이 죽던 해에, 이사야 선지자는 마음에 큰 충격을 받았습니다. 스랍들의 놀라운 광경을 체험하는 가운데, 이스라엘의 패역과 발바닥부터 머리까지 성한 곳이 없는 상처를 발견했기 때문입니다(사 1:5-6). 거짓 저울로 탐욕을 취하여 하늘 아래 선한 것이 하나도 없었습니다. 이런 상황에서 “내가 누구를 보내며 누가 우리를 위하여 갈꼬” 하는 음성이 들릴 때, 이사야 선지자는 “내가 여기 있나이다 나를 보내소서”(사 6:8-12)라고 대답했습니다. 이 말은 모든 사람이 다 하나님의 음성을 외면하고 떠났으나 마지막까지 남은 자가 이사야 선지자라는 뜻입니다. 이 말씀에서 영감을 받아, 사도 바울은 로마서 9:27에서 “이스라엘 뭇 자손의 수가 비록 바다의 모래 같을지라도 남은 자만 구원을 얻으리니”라고 증거했습니다.
또한, 시므온과 레위는 할례를 이용하여 세겜 사람들을 죽이는 죄를 범했으나, 광야에서 이스라엘이 금송아지 우상숭배의 죄를 범했을 때 레위 지파가 여호와의 편에 서서 삼천 명 가량을 도륙한 결과로 제사장 지파가 되었습니다(출 32:26-29). 레위 지파는 모세의 말씀이 떨어지자마자 말씀의 편에 서서 ‘아멘’으로 순종했던 것입니다.
예수님께서도 “나는 아버지의 명령이 영생인 줄 아노라”(요 12:50)라고 말씀하셨습니다. 이처럼 말씀에 대한 즉각적인 순종, 끝까지 ‘내가 여기 있나이다’라는 자세로 말씀 앞에 서 있는 것이야말로 산 예배입니다. 이러한 산 예배를 드리는 자만이 끝까지 남은 자가 되어 말씀의 뜻에 순종할 수가 있습니다.
2. 남은 자는 ‘말씀의 사실’을 생각하는 자입니다.
여기서 ‘말씀의 사실’이란 “있는 그대로의 모습”을 가리킵니다. 거짓이나 가식 없이, 나의 죄악된 모습까지도 숨김없이 있는 사실 그대로 주 앞에 내어놓는 자만이 끝까지 남은 자가 된다는 뜻입니다.
사두개인과 바리새인들이 간음하는 여인을 현장에서 붙잡아 주께로 끌고 왔습니다. 율법에 의거하여 돌로 죽일 것을 기대했던 그들에게, 예수님은 “너희 중에 죄 없는 자가 먼저 치라” 하시고 땅바닥에 글을
쓰셨습니다. 그들은 아무 소리도 못 하고 돌을 땅에 놓고 다 돌아갔으니, 이제 간음한 여인만이 주 앞에 홀로 서 있게 되었습니다(요 8:9). 예수님께서는 그 여인에게 ‘생각’을 주셨습니다. 여인은 ‘나를 지금 돌로 쳐 죽이겠구나’ 생각했지만, 무리는 다 떠나고, 예수님은 “너를 정죄한 자가 없느냐?”, “나도 너를 정죄하지 아니하노니”(요 8:10-11)라고 말씀하셨습니다.
사실 가장 먼저 떠나야 할 사람은 부끄러운 죄를 범한 여인입니다. 하지만 모든 사람이 다 떠날 때까지 그녀는 끝까지 남아서 주 앞에 섰습니다. 이것이 간음한 여자의 위대성입니다. 범죄한 ‘사실’을 숨기거나 거짓으로 변명하지 않고, 있는 사실 그대로를 가지고 주 앞에 섰습니다. 죄 있는 자가 주 앞에 설 때, “나도 너를 정죄하지 않겠다”라는 축복의 말씀을 들었습니다. 이 말씀이 그 여인의 마음속에 남아서 오늘날까지도 모든 인류에게 말씀하고 있습니다.
바리새인들 앞에, 음란한 여인의 죄악도, 그녀의 존재도 다 사실입니다. 하지만 거짓과 속임 없이, 죄로 만신창이가 된 나의 모습을 주 앞에 가지고 올 때, “안심하라 내 말로 네 죄 사했다” 하시는 축복을 받습니다. 그런 자가 곧 남은 자가 된 것입니다. 주 앞에 ‘사실 그대로’ 다 내어놓는 거짓 없는 참신앙으로 주 앞에 서는 남은 자가 됩시다.
3. 남은 자는 믿음으로 승리하는 자입니다.
마지막 때 환난이 오고 핍박이 심해지면, 십자가 사랑의 은혜를 갈기갈기 다 찢어 놓습니다. 그러할 때 우리만 남았다고 자부하지 말고, 끝까지 믿을 수 있는지, 신앙의 정조가 깃들어 있는지 재검토해야 믿음의 승리자가 될 수 있습니다.
계 7:14-15에서 ‘큰 환난에서 나오는 자들’에 대해 말씀하고 있습니다. 엘리야 시대에도 다 바알에게 경배하고 겨우 자기 혼자 남았다고 생각할 때, 하나님은 ‘바알에게 무릎 꿇지 아니한 7천 명’이 있다고 말씀해 주셨습니다. 하지만 이들 7천 명도 이스라엘 전체 수에 비하면 너무나 작은 수입니다. 이처럼 우리는 끝까지 견딜 수 없고, 믿음을 지킬 수 없는 연약한 자들입니다. 그러므로 시온의 한 돌 되시는 예수님을 피난처와 방패로 삼을 때, 환난을 끝까지 이기고 흰옷을 입고 나오는 남은 자가 될 수 있는 것입니다.
사도 바울이 “보라 하나님의 뜻대로 하게 한 이 근심이 너희로 얼마나 간절하게 하며”(고후 7:11)라고 말씀했듯이, 우리는 ‘얼마나’라는 말씀 속에 있는 헐떡거릴 정도의 뜨거운 열심과 열정을 헤아려야 합니다. 그러한 믿음으로 승리하는 자들만이 끝까지 남은 자가 됩니다.
결론
성경에서 큰 환난을 이기고 나와 끝까지 남은 자의 반열에 서는 자는 모두 자신의 있는 모습 그대로 주 앞에 나와 죄의 문제를 해결 받고 용서함을 받은 자입니다. 그 결과로 산 예배를 드리며 헐떡거릴 정도의 열심으로 믿음을 지킨 자들입니다. 이러한 남은 자의 반열에 서는 평강의 성도 여러분이 되시기 바랍니다.
