The four types of people who dwelt in the city of Sodom
Since God said that the coming of the Son of Man was the same in the days of Lot, we must see with the eyes of faith the reality of the city of Sodom and Gomorrah which were destroyed by burning sulfur more than 4,000 years ago and become the wise and faithful saints so that we can escape from the sinful city filled with iniquity, immorality, obliquity, idolatry, and all types of wickedness.
I. The common people of the city of Sodom–the sinners who fell into materialism.
What Jesus said in Lk 17:28-29 about the characteristics of the days of Lot was the images of the most ordinary aspect of life. ‘Eating’ refers to materialism. ‘Drinking’ refers to hedonism. ‘Buying and selling’ refers to the doctrine of accumulating materials and wealth by gaining profits. In addition to this, God spoke of ‘marrying and being given in marriage’ which refers to the doctrine of seeking pleasure and passion that illustrates sexual immorality (Eze 16:49-50). As such, the common people of the city of Sodom during the days of Lot were not interested in spiritual matters but followed their instincts. The act of eating, drinking, buying, selling, planting, and building houses is indeed a faithful demonstration of man’s desire to eat, dress and live well on earth. Hence, they did not have spiritual eyes to see angels like Lot did, but ‘all the men from the city of Sodom, both young and old’ surrounded the house instead (Gen 19:4-5) and demanded him to bring them out. We are destined to be destroyed if we do not open our eyes to the Word or open our hearts to God no matter how rich we are on this earth.
II. The sons-in-law of Lot–the intellectual believers that are stained with the secular things.
Considering the Word of God as a joke is a constant phenomenon in times of judgment. This has been consistent in the days of Noah, in the days of the prophets, and even in the days of Jesus. Lot’s sons-in-law signify the ‘intellectual believers that are stained with the secular things.’ They were already in the ‘domain of salvation.’ In the city of Sodom, they heard the Word of salvation through Lot, their father-in-law, and were given the opportunity to hold onto it. Although they were blessed to enter the domain of the Word, they were so into the world that they ignored the spiritual world and put forth their own knowledge and experience. They themselves abandoned the blessing of salvation that rolled over to them.
III. Lot’s wife–the saint whose mind is still in the world although her body has departed.
Lot’s wife is a classic example of a person whose mind stayed in the city of Sodom even though her body has left there because she still had her entire possession and the precious items there. She was Abraham’s niece-in-law who had an amazing experience of faith. She met and greeted those angels with Lot. She conversed with the angels and was personally instructed to leave the city of Sodom quickly. She obeyed and ran out of the city of Sodom. However, she became a pillar of salt in the middle of her escape as a result of looking back with a ‘doubt’ in her heart as she forgot the angel’s warning of not to look back because of her attachment to materials. How many saints are like Lot’s wife today? Their body is out of the sinful world, but their mind is still there. They were perished in the end as a result of not being able to abandon the worldly attachments while they were in the process of being selected from the city of death and moving on to the way of life. Jesus warned us to remember ‘Lot’s wife’ (Lk 17:32).
IV. Lot-–the righteous man who sat in the gateway of the city of Sodom and prayed.
Even though the common people were destroyed, his sons-in-law were killed, and his beloved wife died (even if he could not hear her footsteps), Lot kept his faith and did not look back because of it. He believed until the end the angel’s warning of telling him not to look back. Behind Lot’s faith was Abraham, the great man of faith (Gen 19:29). It is the result of God thinking about Abraham who tearfully pleaded with Him to save his nephew. Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city of Sodom. This is the image of a person who is praying on behalf of the people of Sodom as he was remorseful before God when he witnessed the reality of their sins and was saddened in his heart (2Pet 2:6-8). God granted Lot the spiritual eyes to recognize angels. Moreover, Lot begged the people of Sodom not to harm the angels of God as he offered to give up his two daughters instead. That is why the angels of God had no choice but to grasp Lot’s hands and escaped. In the End Times, God will grasp the hands of the believers and guide them. After Lot left the city of Sodom, God told him to flee to the mountains, but God allowed him to go to the city of Zoar after He heard Lot’s plea (Gen 19:18-21). This denotes the love of God who hears and not reject the petition of the saints and grants them mercy. This foreshadows that there will be a work of grace (Mt 9:2) of healing the paralyzed man when Jesus saw the faith of a ‘young man’ in the End Times.
Conclusion
God gave five warnings about the city of Sodom through an angel. God told them to flee and preserve life, not to look back or stay in the fields, and flee instead to the mountains so that they can escape from the disaster. This is a lesson given to the saints not only in the days of Lot but also in the coming of the Son of Man. The four types of people in the city of Sodom are the four types of saints living in the world today. I sincerely hope that all of you will be alert like Lot to enter the order that fulfills salvation.
소돔성에 거한 네 종류의 사람
인자의 임함은 롯의 때와 같다고 하셨으니, 4천여 년 전에 유황불이 내려 멸망한 소돔과 고모라 성의 실상을 믿음의 눈으로 바라보며 부도덕과 패륜, 우상숭배와 온갖 죄악이 난무하는 죄악의 도성에서 빠져나와 멸망을 면하는 지혜롭고 믿음 있는 성도가 되어야겠습니다.
1. 소돔성의 일반 백성들-–물질주의에 빠진 범죄자들
예수님께서 누가복음 17:28-29에서 말씀하신 롯의 때의 특징은 지극히 일상적인 삶의 모습입니다. ‘먹는다’는 것은 유물주의를 가리킵니다. ‘마신다’는 것은 향락주의를 말합니다. ‘사고 파는 것’은 이익을 얻어 물질을 쌓으려 하는 치부(致富:재물을 모아 부자가 됨)주의를 뜻합니다. 여기에 더해, 노아 당시에는 ‘장가들고 시집가’는 것을 말씀하고 있는데, 이는 애정주의를 가리키는 것으로서 성적인 타락상을 잘 보여 주고 있습니다(겔 16:49-50).
이처럼 롯의 때 소돔성의 일반 백성들은 영적인 일에는 관심이 없이 오직 본능에 충실한 사람들입니다. 먹고 마시고, 사고팔고, 심고, 집을 짓는 행위는 그야말로 이 땅에서 잘 먹고, 잘 입고, 잘살고자 하는 인간의 욕망을 충실하게 보여 주고 있습니다.
그러므로 이들에게는 롯처럼 천사를 볼 수 있는 영안(靈眼)도 열리지 않았고, 오히려 ‘소돔 백성들이 무론 노소하고’(창 19:4-5) 롯의 집을 에워싸 천사들을 이끌어 내라고 요구하였습니다. 이 땅에서 아무리 풍족하게 살아도, 말씀에 눈뜨지 못하고 하나님을 향해 마음이 열리지 않으면 이처럼 죄악에 가담하여 부지불식간에 멸망하고 맙니다.
2. 롯의 사위들-–세속에 물든 지성인 신자들
하나님의 말씀을 농담으로 여기는 것은 심판의 때에 늘 있던 현상입니다. 이는 노아 때나 역대 선지자들의 때, 심지어 예수님 당시에도 일관되게 있었던 일입니다.
롯의 사위들은 ‘세속에 물든 지성인 신자’를 가리킵니다. 이들은 ‘구원의 영내’에 들어와 있던 자들입니다. 소돔성 안에서, 장인인 롯을 통해 구원의 말씀을 들었고 그것을 붙잡을 기회가 주어졌습니다. 말씀권 내에 들어오는 축복을 받았는데도, 그들은 세상에 너무 밝아서 영적인 세계를 무시하고 자신들의 지식과 경험을 더 앞세웠습니다. 굴러 들어온 구원의 복을 스스로 걷어차고 제 발로 나간 자들입니다.
3. 롯의 처-–몸은 떠났으나 마음은 세상에 있는 성도
롯의 아내는 소돔성에 전 재산이 있고 아끼는 물건들이 있었기에,
몸은 나왔지만 마음은 떠나지 못한 사람의 대표격입니다. 그녀는 아브라함의 조카며느리로서 신앙의 신비로운 체험을 한 사람입니다. 롯과 함께 천사를 만났고 대접까지 했습니다. 천사와 대화도 나눴고, 빨리 소돔성을 떠나라는 지시도 직접 받았습니다. 순종해서 소돔성을 뛰쳐나왔습니다. 그러나 도중에, 물질에 대한 애착심 때문에 뒤돌아보지 말라는 천사의 경고를 잊고, 순간 마음속에 ‘설마’ 하는 마음으로 뒤돌아본 결과로 소금기둥이 되고 말았습니다.
오늘날 롯의 처와 같은 성도가 얼마나 많습니까? 몸은 죄악된 세상에서 나왔지만, 마음은 여전히 그곳에 남아 있는 자들입니다. 죽음의 도성에서 선택을 받아 생명의 길로 옮겨가는 과정에서 세상의 미련을 버리지 못한 결과로 끝내 망하고 만 사람입니다. 예수님은 이와 같은 ‘롯의 처’를 생각하라(눅 17:32)고 우리에게 경고로 말씀을 주셨습니다.
4. 롯-–소돔 성문에 앉아 기도한 의인
롯의 신앙은 일반 대중이 멸망을 당하고, 사위들이 죽임을 당하고, 사랑하는 아내가 죽었어도(아내의 발걸음 소리가 들리지 않아도) 그것 때문에 뒤를 돌아보지 않은 사람입니다. 뒤를 돌아보지 말라는 천사의 경고를 끝까지 믿은 사람입니다.
롯의 이러한 신앙의 배후에는 위대한 신앙가 아브라함이 있었습니다(창 19:29). 조카를 구원하기 위해 하나님께 눈물로 간구한 아브라함을 하나님께서 생각해 주신 결과입니다.
롯은 소돔 성문에 앉아 있었습니다. 이는 소돔 사람들의 죄악의 실상을 보며 마음에 근심하며, 하나님 앞에 너무 죄송해서 백성들을 대신해서 기도하는 모습입니다(벧후 2:6-8). 하나님은 그런 롯에게 천사들을 알아볼 수 있는 신령한 눈을 허락해 주셨습니다.
또한, 롯은 자신의 두 딸을 내어줄망정 하나님의 사람들에게는 해를 입히지 않기를 소돔 사람들에게 간청했습니다. 그러니 하나님의 천사가 롯의 손을 붙잡고 빼내지 않을 수가 없었던 것입니다. 마지막 때도 하나님은 믿는 자의 손을 붙잡고 우리를 인도해 주십니다. 소돔성을 나온 롯에게 하나님은 산으로 도망하라고 하셨으나, 롯의 간청을 들으시고 소알성으로 가기를 허락하셨습니다(창 19:18-21). 이는 성도의 소원을 물리치지 않고 들어주사 긍휼을 베풀어 주시는 하나님의 사랑을 의미합니다. 끝날에 ‘소자’의 믿음을 보시고 중풍병을 고쳐 주신 것과 같은 은혜의 역사(마 9:2)가 있을 것을 예표해 주는 말씀입니다.
결론
하나님은 천사를 통하여 소돔성에 대한 5대 경고를 하셨습니다. ①도망하여 생명을 보존하라, ②돌아보거나 ③들에 머무르거나 하지 말고 ④산으로 도망하여 ⑤멸망함을 면하라고 하셨습니다. 이는 롯의 때뿐 아니라 인자의 임할 때에 성도들에게 주시는 교훈입니다. 소돔성의 네 종류의 사람들은 오늘 이 세상에 살아가는 네 가지 유형의 성도를 말합니다. 롯처럼 깨어서 구원을 이루는 반열에 서는 성도가 되시기를 바랍니다.
