Only those who renewed their strength are the first day.
Just as all darkness receded and light came brightly on the first day when God said, “Let there be light,” I sincerely hope that we dwell each day of year 2023 in the light like the first day; and it would be a blessed year where every day is filled with a new strength. God said through the prophet Isaiah, ‘those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength.’ In this year, I sincerely believe that our strength will be renewed every day and the same grace as the ‘first day’ will pour upon us when we look only upon God.
I. It is always the ‘first day’ for God.
God’s work started on the first day. ‘Let there be light’ in Gen 1 was the first Word that God spoke on the first day into history. The history of redemption began with the proclamation of this Word, and the light of salvation shone on sinful mankind who were in darkness. In the Scripture text, God heard the lamentations of the Israelites. To the Israelites who complained, “My way is hidden from the LORD; my cause is disregarded by my God” (40:27), God said, “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak” (40:29). As you can see, the redemptive work of God that renews our strength had already started on the first day of Genesis. God’s work of creation and redemption extends not only to the first day but to the sixth day as well, and He rested on the seventh day. God’s time seems to pass by like one day or two days to the eyes of the human, but all His time is always the first day for God. In other words, each day is the first day because the Word never changes, and it has the power to rejuvenate all things and redeem the saints. For God, there is only ‘today’ that is eternal (Heb 13:8). The first day is a day of the past for those who are dead. That is why Jesus said to the disciple who was about to bury his father, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead” (Mt 8:22). It is because every day is the first day for the disciples who come before the living Word and walk on the path to live forever.
II. Conditions to acquire a new strength.
In order to receive a new strength that God gives us and live each day as the ‘first day,’ first, we must not rely on people. It is written in Heb 12:2-3, “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.” Since only Jesus is the Lord of faith, we will have a new strength when we look upon Jesus. This conviction is contained in the Psalmist’s confession of faith who praised, ”When you send your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the ground” (Ps 104:30). God is telling us never to trust in mere humans (Isa 2:22) who are like a ‘mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes’ (Jam 4:13-14) that withers like ‘grass or flowers’ (1Pet 1:24). Hence, we only have the ‘Word’ to rely on. Second, we must take refuge in God. People tend to seek for someone who has more power or has more capabilities than they are when they are faced with difficulties. However, God said, “It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in humans and princes” (Ps 118:8-9). Because it is the first day only for God, He will give us a new strength when we take refuge in Him. The Israelites who had believed for 4,000 years did not accept Jesus but relied on the humans instead and fell behind whereas the tax collectors, harlots, and sinners came forward to the Lord and stood on the first day. They renewed their strength and moved from darkness to light.
III. The happiness of the saints who dwell on the first day with the renewed strength.
God will never forsake the saints who rely only on His Word and dwell on the ‘first day.’ The world is constantly suffering from betrayal and unfaithfulness, but God never forsakes those who trust in Him (Ps 9:10). He will deliver us if we only rely on Him (Ps 22:4). How powerless do we feel and how difficult is it to be betrayed and abandoned by people? However, I sincerely hope that the confession of the Psalmist who said, ‘To you they cried out and were saved; in you they trusted and were not put to shame’ (Ps 22:5) be your testimony of faith at such times. Moreover, when we dwell on the first day with the renewed strength, we are “no longer in darkness so that this day will not come upon us like a thief” (1Thes 5:4-11), and we will experience the happiness that we all become the children of the light and the children of the day. Moreover, we will be able to “declare the praises of Him who called us out of darkness into His wonderful light” (1Pet 2:9-10). How great happiness is it to become the ‘people of God’ and receive mercy as a result?
Conclusion
The Apostle Paul told the members of the church in Philippi, “If on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you” (Php 3:15). If we put aside our human greed and selfish thoughts and ‘think differently’ in the Word, God will bestow upon us the blessings of the first day. That is a day that we transform from darkness to light. That is a day where all grief, troubles, distress, tribulation, and sickness will recede, and the blessing of twelve o’clock or daytime will bestow upon the crown of our heads. It is a day where the Word of God that is ‘alive and active’ will eliminate all iniquities from within and will give us a new strength. I sincerely hope that all of you will be the saints who dwell on the first day of God with a renewed strength through the Word given daily.
새 힘을 얻는 자만이 첫날이다
하나님께서 첫째 날 “빛이 있으라” 하실 때 모든 어둠이 물러가고 빛이 환하게 임한 것처럼, 2023년 한 해 하루하루가 첫째 날처럼 빛 가운데 거하고 새 힘이 충만한 복된 한 해가 되기를 바랍니다. 하나님께서는 이사야 선지자를 통해 ‘여호와를 앙망하는 자’는 새 힘을 얻는다 하셨습니다. 오직 하나님만을 바라볼 때, 금년 한 해는 날마다 새 힘을 받아 ‘첫날’과 같은 은혜가 쏟아질 줄로 믿습니다.
1. 하나님께는 언제나 ‘첫째 날’입니다.
하나님의 역사는 첫째 날부터 시작이 되었습니다. 창세기 1장에서 ‘빛이 있으라’라고 하신 말씀이 하나님께서 역사에 들어오신 첫째 날 첫 말씀이었습니다. 이 말씀의 선포로 구속사가 시작되었고, 어둠에 있던 죄악된 인류에게 구원의 빛줄기가 비치게 되었습니다.
본문에서 하나님은 이스라엘 백성들의 한탄 소리를 들으셨습니다. “내 사정은 여호와께 숨겨졌으며 원통한 것은 내 하나님에게 수리하심을 받지 못한다”(40:27)라며 원망하는 이스라엘 백성들에게 하나님은 “피곤한 자에게 능력을 주시며 무능한 자에게 힘을 더하신다”(40:29)라고 응답해 주셨습니다. 이처럼 새 힘을 주시는 하나님의 구속 역사는 이미 창세기의 첫째 날에 시작되었습니다.
하나님의 창조와 구속 역사는 첫째 날뿐 아니라 여섯째 날까지 이어지며, 일곱째 날에 안식하셨습니다. 인간의 눈으로는 하나님의 시간도 하루, 이틀 흐르는 것 같지만, 하나님께는 언제나, 모든 시간이 첫째 날입니다. 즉, 언제나 그 말씀이 변치 않으며, 만물을 소성케 하고, 성도들을 구원하는 능력이 있기에 하루하루가 첫째 날입니다. 하나님께는 오직 ‘영원한 오늘’(히 13:8)뿐입니다.
죽은 자에게는 첫째 날이 지나간 시간입니다. 그래서 예수님은 부친을 장사 지내려는 제자에게 “죽은 자들로 저희 죽은 자를 장사하게 하고 너는 나를 좇으라”(마 8:22)라고 하셨던 것입니다. 산 말씀 앞에 와서 영원히 살 수 있는 길을 걷는 제자들에게는 모든 날이 첫째 날이기 때문입니다.
2. 새 힘을 얻기 위한 조건.
하나님이 주시는 새 힘을 얻어 날마다 ‘첫째 날’처럼 살아가기 위해서는 첫째, 사람을 의지하지 말아야 합니다.
히 12:2-3에서 “믿음의 주요 또 온전케 하시는 이인 예수를 바라보자”라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 오직 예수님만이 ‘믿음의 주’가 되시기 때문에 예수님을 바라볼 때에만 새 힘이 생깁니다. “주의 영을 보내어 저희를 창조하사 지면을 새롭게 하시나이다”(시 104:30)라고 노래했던 시편 기자의 신앙 고백에 이 믿음이 담겨 있습니다.
하나님은, ‘잠간 보이다가 없어지는 안개’(약 4:13-14)와 같고, ‘풀이나 꽃’처럼 시드는 인생(벧전 1:24)을 결코 ‘의지하지 말라’(사 2:22)고 말씀하고 계십니다. 그러므로 우리가 의지할 것은 오직 ‘말씀’밖에 없습니다.
둘째, 여호와 하나님께 피해야 합니다.
사람들은 어려움에 처할 때 나보다 힘이 있고 능력 있는 사람을 찾게 마련입니다. 그러나 하나님은 “여호와께 피함이 사람이나 방백을 신뢰함보다 낫다”(시 118:8-9)라고 말씀하셨습니다. 오직 하나님께만 첫째 날이기 때문에 그분께 피할 때 새 힘을 주십니다.
4천 년 동안 믿었던 이스라엘은 예수님을 영접하지 않고 사람을 의지하여 맨 뒤로 떨어지고, 세리와 창녀와 죄인들이 주님께 나아와 첫날에 섰습니다. 새 힘을 받아 어둠에서 빛으로 옮겨오게 된 것입니다.
3. 새 힘을 얻어 첫날에 거하는 성도의 행복.
오직 하나님의 말씀을 의지하며 ‘첫날’에 거하는 성도들을 하나님은 절대로 버리지 않으십니다. 세상은 배신과 배반의 아픔이 끊이지 않지만, 하나님은 당신을 의지하는 자를 절대 버리지 않으십니다(시 9:10). 하나님을 의지하기만 하면 저희를 건지십니다(시 22:4). 사람에게 배신당하고 버려졌을 때 얼마나 힘이 빠지고 힘들겠습니까? 하지만 그럴 때일수록 “주께 부르짖어 구원을 얻고 주께 의뢰하여 수치를 당치 아니하였나이다”(시 22:5)라는 시편 기자의 고백이 성도 여러분의 간증이 되길 바랍니다.
또한, 새 힘을 얻어 첫날에 거하게 되면 더 이상 “어둠에 있지 아니하매 그날이 도적같이 너희에게 임하지 못하리니”(살전 5:4-11), 다 빛의 아들이요 낯의 아들이 되는 행복을 경험하게 됩니다. 또한, “너희를 어두운 데서 불러내어 그의 기이한 빛에 들어가게 하신 자의 아름다운 덕을 선전”(벧전 2:9-10)하게 됩니다. 그 결과로 ‘하나님의 백성’이 되어 긍휼을 얻은 자가 되니, 얼마나 큰 행복입니까?
결론
사도 바울은 빌립보 교인들에게 “만일 무슨 일에 너희가 달리 생각하면 하나님이 이것도 너희에게 나타내시리라”(빌 3:15)라고 말씀하였습니다. 우리의 인간적인 욕심과 이기적인 생각을 내려놓고 말씀 안에서 ‘달리 생각하면’ 하나님은 우리에게 첫째 날의 축복을 주십니다. 그날은 어둠에서 빛으로 변화하는 날입니다. 모든 우환 질고, 환난과 병마가 다 물러가고 낮 열두 시의 축복이 우리의 정수리에 주어지는 날입니다. ‘살았고 운동력 있는 말씀’이 내면의 모든 죄악을 제거하여 새 힘을 주시는 날입니다. 날마다 주시는 말씀 안에서 새 힘을 받아 하나님의 첫째 날에 거하는 성도님들이 되시기 바랍니다.
