Let us submit our closing statement of faith for this year.
The Bible speaks about a meaningful lesson on “settlements.” First, it tells us that the ultimate settlement for sin is death (Rom 6:23). This was well demonstrated by the Judgment of Flood during the time of Noah as well as the destruction of the City of Sodom and Gomorrah. On the contrary, it also tells us that forgiveness and blessing will be given to those who repent no matter the type of sin they have committed. We see this from the fact that the repentance and blessing of David and the repentance of the Apostles Paul and Peter became a cause to utilize them as great kings and apostles. If you lived this year of 2022 with the grace of God, let us examine together what type of closing statement we must submit.
I. The “revenue” of our closing statement of faith is the “conviction.”
The Bible tells us that in our life of faith, the source of our “revenue” is the “conviction.” Like we need capital to conduct a business, the capital of our faith is the “conviction.” According to Heb 12:2, this conviction is God of Trinity, the “Holy Father, the Holy Son, and the Holy Spirit.” It is because our God of Trinity has become our “Lord of Faith.” Moreover, Eph 2:8-9 clearly tells us that faith is truly the gift of God. This means that faith is not acquired through the deeds of a man but given freely only as the gift from God. The source that enables us to gain this faith is the Word of God. It is because the faith comes from listening to the Word of God as it is written in Rom 10:17, and the object of this faith is God. Jesus said in Jn 14:1, “Believe in God and believe also in me.” All these Scripture references clearly point out that God and His Only Son Jesus Christ are our Lord of Faith and the objects of our faith. However, not only there are upright faith in the Bible but also “dead faith” (Jam 2:17). Such dead faith is temporary faith that is merely intellectual faith. Such dead faith does not lead us to salvation (1Cor 1:18). If so, what type of faith did we gain throughout this year? Perhaps, did we gain dead faith that only speaks without actions? In order to live uprightly in faith, we must have upright faith. I sincerely hope that our faith is deeply rooted so that we can submit the closing statement of faith that God desires.
II. The “expenditure” on our closing statement of faith is “love.”
If the “revenue” on the closing statement of faith is the “conviction,” then we can say that the “expenditure” can be “love.” It is because Gal 5:5-6 clearly tells us that faith works through love. If there is revenue but no expenditures in a business, we cannot say such business is a healthy one. Likewise, if we received faith as the gift from God, then there must be expenditures of love that is appropriate. A parable of a good Samaritan appears in Lk 10. Here, neither the Levite nor the priest made an expenditure of love toward this person who was robbed. We can see that only the Samaritan took a great care of him with love. What is Jesus’ intention from this parable? It is that the proper faith will enable us to make expenditures of ‘love.’ No matter how great your faith is, it is useless without love. If so, have you proclaimed this year the gospel of salvation of the cross with faith and love? Christmas represents God’s first love for mankind. Because his love for God was greater than for his son, Abraham was able to offer Isaac to God. As you can see, when we gain faith and spend love, God will prepare for all our future. Faith without love and the loveless lives of the believers are as useless as clanging cymbals (1Cor 13:1). The parable of the sheep and the goat depicted in Mt 25:32-46 is a story about the believers who earned faith and spent love; and who earned faith but did not spend love. The believers like sheep are those who fed the owner when he was hungry. The expenditure of love on a little child who seemed unimportant to the eyes of many is the hospitality provided to God by the believers like sheep (Mt 10:42). On the contrary, those who are like goats only have faith but no expenditures of love. Likewise, the key point of this parable is whether or not expenditure of love was made, which then becomes the point that separates the heaven and the hell.
III. The “Balance” that is left in our life of faith in the year of 2022 is “Hope.”
Faith was given as the gift from God, but the life of the believers should spend “love” and yield “hope” for heaven. It is because the hope for God will not cease for those whose “revenue” of faith is abundant and their “expenditure” of love is active. This hope is not the hope that perishes in reality. It is not the hope that falls and dries up like withering plant or a flower, but it is the Living Hope that neither disappears nor withers (1Pet 1:3-4). As we balance out this year of 2022, the members of Green Hill Church must have a hope to look upon the future. Even though the Israelites were persecuted by the Pharaoh of Egypt for 400 years, they did not lose hope. Even though the Early Church received so much persecution from Nero the Great of Roman Empire, they did not lose hope for the Messiah. It is the result of gathering abundant faith from God and spending on love. The contemporary people tend to leave the church easily, consider attending church lightly or the duties of church lightly, but even so, we must maintain the hope for eternal Kingdom of God firmly in our hearts. That is the proper image of the believers standing before God right before the closing of this year.
Conclusion
God puts more emphasis on the process or how hard you have tried to accomplish that goal rather than the outcome. If we have received abundant blessings of faith and grace from God this year, then I sincerely hope that we all be praised as the ‘good and faithful servant’ by practicing abundant love and maintaining the unchanging hope.
금년 한 해 나의 신앙생활의 결산서를 제출하자
성경은 ‘결산’에 대한 의미 있는 교훈을 말씀하고 있습니다. 먼저, 죄에 대한 결산은 사망이라고 말해 줍니다(롬 6:23). 이는 노아 시대의 홍수 심판이나 소돔, 고모라 성의 멸망을 통해 익히 입증된 내용입니다. 반면에, 어떠한 죄를 지었더라도 ‘회개’하기만 하면 용서와 축복이 주어짐을 말씀하고 있습니다. 이는 다윗의 회개와 축복, 사도바울이나 베드로의 회개가 위대한 왕, 사도로 쓰임 받게 된 원인이 된 데서 알 수 있습니다.
그렇다면 금년 2022년 한 해도 하나님의 은혜로 살아온 한 해였다면, 우리는 어떠한 결산서를 제출해야 하는지 함께 살펴보도록 하겠습니다.
1. 신앙의 결산서의 수입은 ‘믿음’입니다.
신앙생활에 있어서 그 수입의 근원은 ‘믿음’이라고 성경은 말씀하고 있습니다. 즉 기업 경영에 있어서 자본이 있어야 하듯이, 신앙생활의 자본은 ‘믿음’이라는 말입니다. 이 믿음은 히 12:2 말씀을 볼 때 성부·성자·성령 하나님입니다. 삼위일체 하나님께서 우리의 ‘믿음의 주’가 되시기 때문입니다. 또한, 엡 2:8-9 말씀을 보면, 믿음은 오직 하나님의 선물임을 분명히 말씀하고 있습니다. 즉 믿음은 인간의 행위로 얻어지는 것이 아니라, 오직 하나님의 선물로서 값없이 주어지는 것입니다.
이 믿음을 수입할 수 있는 근원은 하나님의 말씀입니다. 롬 10:17에서 말씀하고 있는 것처럼, 믿음은 하나님의 말씀을 들음에서 나기 때문입니다. 그리고 이 믿음의 대상은 하나님입니다. 요 14:1에서 예수님은 “하나님을 믿으니 또 나를 믿으라” 하셨습니다. 이 모든 것은 하나님과 그의 아들이신 예수 그리스도만이 믿음의 주(主)요, 대상이심을 명확하게 알려 주는 말씀입니다. 그런데 성경을 볼 때, 이처럼 올바른 믿음이 아니라 ‘죽은 믿음’이 있습니다(약 2:17). 그러한 죽은 믿음은 일시적인 믿음이고, 지적(知的)인 믿음에 불과합니다. 이런 죽은 믿음은 구원에 이르게 하는 믿음이 아닙니다(고전 1:18).
그렇다면 금년 한 해 동안에 우리는 어떤 믿음을 수입했습니까? 혹시 말만 잘 하고 행함이 없는 죽은 믿음을 수입하지는 않았습니까? 올바른 신앙생활은 올바른 믿음을 가져야만 합니다. 올 한 해도 믿음의 뿌리를 깊이 내려, 하나님께서 기뻐하시는 믿음의 결산서를 제출하는 성도님들이 되시기 바랍니다.
2. 신앙의 결산서의 지출은 ‘사랑’입니다..
신앙의 결산서에서 ‘수입’이 믿음이라면, ‘지출’은 사랑이라 할 수 있습니다. 갈 5:5-6에 ‘믿음은 사랑으로 역사한다’고 분명히 말씀하고 있기 때문입니다. 수입은 있으나 지출이 없다면 이는 건전한 기업이라 할 수 없습니다. 마찬가지로, 우리의 신앙생활에서도 하나님께 믿음을 선물로 받았다면 그에 합당한 ‘사랑’의 지출이 있어야 합니다.
눅 10장에 선한 사마리아인에 대한 비유가 나옵니다. 여기서 강도 만난 자에게 레위인이나 제사장은 사랑의 지출을 하지 않았습니다. 오직 사마리아인만이 정성을 다해 사랑으로 대해 주고 있음을 볼 수 있습니다. 이 비유에서 예수님께서 의도하신 바가 무엇입니까? 그것은 올바른 믿음은 ‘사랑’의 지출을 행하는 것이라는 겁니다. 아무리 큰 믿음이 있다 해도 사랑이 없으면 소용없습니다. 그렇다면 금년 한 해에 믿음과 사랑을 가지고 구원의 십자가 복음을 전했습니까?
성탄절은 하나님의 인류에 대한 먼저 사랑입니다. 아브라함 또한 자기 아들에 대한 사랑보다 하나님에 대한 사랑이 더 컸기에 이삭을 하나님께 바칠 수 있었습니다. 이처럼 우리가 믿음을 수입하고 사랑을 지출할 때, 하나님께서 우리의 모든 앞날을 준비하시는 역사가 있습니다. 사랑이 없는 믿음, 사랑이 없는 성도의 생활은 울리는 꽹과리와 같이 아무것도 아닙니다(고전 13:1).
마 25:32-46의 양과 염소에 대한 비유는, 믿음을 수입하고 사랑을 지출하는 성도와, 사랑을 지출하지 않은 성도에 관한 이야기입니다. 양과 같은 성도는 주인이 주릴 때 대접한 사람입니다. 보잘것없는 소자(小子)에게 행한 ‘사랑의 지출’이 하나님께 대한 양과 같은 성도의 대접이었던 것입니다(마 10:42). 반면에, 염소 같은 자는 믿음만 받았지 사랑의 지출이 없는 자입니다. 이처럼 사랑의 지출 여부가 천국과 지옥을 가른다는 것이 이 비유의 핵심입니다.
3. 2022년도 신앙생활의 잔액은 ‘소망’입니다.
믿음은 하나님께 선물로 받았지만, 성도의 생활은 사랑을 지출하고 하늘나라에 대한 ‘소망’을 남겨야 합니다. 믿음의 수입이 충만하고 사랑의 지출이 활발한 사람은 하나님께 대한 소망이 끊어지지 않기 때문입니다. 그 소망은 현실 속에서 썩어져 가는 소망이 아닙니다. 풀같이, 마른 꽃같이 떨어지는 소망이 아니라, 썩지 않고 쇠하지 않고 없어지지 아니하는 산 소망입니다(벧전 1:3-4). 2022년도 한 해를 결산하면서 우리 평강제일교회 성도들에게는 미래를 바라보는 소망이 있어야 합니다. 이스라엘 민족도 400년간이나 애굽에서 바로에게 핍박을 받았지만 ‘소망’을 잃지 않았습니다.
초대교회가 로마의 네로 황제에게 엄청난 박해를 받았지만 메시아에 대한 소망을 잃지 않았습니다. 하나님으로부터 믿음의 수입과 사랑의 지출을 넉넉히 한 결과입니다. 현대인들은 교회를 쉽게 떠나고, 예배 참석이나 받은 직분에 대해 소홀히 생각하는 경향이 많지만, 그럴수록 우리는 영원한 하나님 나라에 대한 소망을 굳게 간직해야 합니다. 이것이 한 해의 결산을 앞두고 하나님 앞에 선 성도의 올바른 모습입니다.
결론
하나님은 일의 결과보다는 일을 해 나가는 동안 얼마나 열심히 했는가를, 그 과정을 귀중히 여기시는 분입니다. 금년 한 해에 우리가 하나님께 아낌없는 믿음의 축복과 은혜를 받았다면, 아낌없이 사랑을 실천하고 변치 않는 소망을 간직함으로써 ‘착하고 충성된 종’으로 칭찬받는 역사가 있기를 바라겠습니다.
