Have you been tempted by the time as the days go by?
Have you been tempted by time as you lived your life? The word “temptation” refers to luring someone to disturb his mind or to a wrong path to cause him to commit sin and ultimately causes him to fall. Judas Iscariot betrayed his teacher during three and a half years, and the Galatians turned away from Paul and his gospel after they were tempted by times even though they had fervent love to risk even their lives for him. Even the fervent first love of the Ephesian church could not withstand the years of persecution and fell below the freezing point. In the midst of these temptations of time, the Apostle Paul was able to overcome the temptation of time and work faithfully until the end for the Will by forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, pressing on toward the goal.
I. Love enables us to overcome the temptations of time.
The power to overcome the temptations of time is love. For example, the Bible tells us that when Jacob served 7 years in his uncle Laban’s house to get his beloved Rachel, he overcame the time with his passionate love for her and considered those 7 years like only a few days (Gen 29:18-20). If we were to convert 7 years to days, they would be 2,555 days. What a long period of time is this? However, doesn’t it say that Jacob considered those days of toil and hard labor as only a few days? The secret is love. My beloved Saints! What happened to your loving commitment you made in the beginning of this year that you would love the Lord, love the Church, and love your friends as you are passing through the final month out of 365 days? Didn’t the passion change as the time go by that it was passionate in January and February but got colder towards the end of the year after July and August? For 3 years, the Apostle Paul ceaselessly and tearfully disciplined each and every one of the Ephesians day and night and reared them with love. Love is the fulfillment of the law (Rom 13:8,10). With that intense love, God loved us and is commanding us to love (Mt 22:37-40). Like a father who is waiting for his prodigal son, God loves us and is waiting for us to return. Even if our biological parents forsake us, God will never forsake us but will embrace us. Because God embraces us in His bosom and holds us passionately in His arms with Agape love, we can move forward to accomplish our mission with consistent passion without getting weakened before the temptations of time.
II. Faith enables us to overcome the temptations of time.
Joseph the son of Jacob completely transcended his situations, circumstances, background, and stands and lived his life only fearing God. He only lived before God, living only fearing and trusting God while he was being loved by his father or living as a slave in the house of Potiphar; or during the time when he was a son of a rich man or was a slave; or whether he was a free man or incarcerated in jail. Those 2 years of imprisonment while he was greatly misunderstood, could not dampen the intense faith in Joseph’s youth and his heart. It is likewise with Simeon and Anna. They were both old, but their fervent faith to yearn for the Messiah stopped the flow of time and ultimately led them to meet the Lord. Thus, it is not the time that defeats the saints, but the great faith of the saints defeats the time. Likewise, one can safeguard his faith from the years of evil and the years of intense temptation if he has faith. That is why the Apostle John said, “What overcomes the world is the faith to believe only in Jesus” (1 Jn 5 4-5).
III. The personality of faith enables us to overcome the temptations of time.
The word ‘personality’ refers to ‘the qualification or sophistication that one holds as a person.’ An example of those who possessed the personality of faith that was dignified enough to resist the temptations of time would be Eliezer, the old servant of Abraham. We see from Gen 15:1-4 and Gen 24 that Abraham’s old servant Eliezer was a man who has gone through thick and thin with his master. Abraham even sent him to fulfill the task as important as selecting a daughter-in-law. Eliezer was loyal and faithful old servant even to miniscule things, whether anyone sees him or not. Isn’t this an image of a loyal person with the great personality of faith who passed beyond the flow of time and got old? It is likewise with Abraham. As a result of being faithful to God in everything he did, Abraham received the great blessing of making a covenant with God and being called a friend of God (2 Chr 20:7).
IV. Dreams enable us to overcome the temptations of time.
Look at a teenage boy Joseph. He dreamt twice, which led him to be ridiculed, disdained, and suffered a great deal of pain almost to the point of being killed by his brothers. He was tempted by pleasure in the house of Potiphar; and he had to endure the sorrow of being unfairly treated while in prison. During these 13 years of hardship, his dream was challenged countless times. Nevertheless, Joseph resisted the temptations of time and was able to fulfill his dream. His brothers plotted to kill him and said, “we’ll see what comes of his dreams” (Gen 37:18-20), but their persecution never dampened Joseph’s dream.
Conclusion
The shutters are already coming down to close the year. Before we close the gates of this year, I would like you to take in faith the precious things that you forgot or no longer passionate; something that has been forgotten, given up, or missed due to evil and tempting years. I would like you to strip off the old garment of a sinful life and change into a new self. Moreover, I sincerely hope that all of us will be even more faithful as we partake in creating a beautiful new history like God’s covenant.
지난날들이 지나가는 동안 세월의 유혹을 받았느냐?
지난날들을 살아오는 동안 혹시 세월의 유혹을 받지는 않으셨습니까? ‘유혹’이란 말은 남을 꾀어서 정신을 어지럽게 하는 것, 그릇된 길로 꾀어서 범죄하게 하고 타락하게 하는 것을 말합니다. 가룟 유다는 3년 반이라는 세월 속에서 스승을 배신했고, 갈라디아 교인들은 바울에게 자기 눈이라도 빼어 줄 정도로 사랑에 불타고 있었지만 세월의 유혹에 넘어가, 바울과 그의 복음까지도 외면했습니다. 에베소 교회의 첫사랑도 핍박의 세월을 견디지 못하고 싸늘한 빙점 이하로 전락하고 말았습니다.
이러한 세월의 유혹 속에서도 사도 바울은 뒤에 있는 것은 잊어버리고 오직 앞에 있는 푯대만을 향해서 달리는 삶을 통해, 세월의 유혹을 이기며 끝까지 뜻을 위해 충성할 수 있었습니다.
1. 사랑은 세월의 유혹을 이기게 합니다.
세월의 유혹을 이기는 힘은 바로 사랑입니다. 대표적으로, 야곱이 삼촌 라반의 집에서 사랑하는 라헬을 위해 봉사할 때 7년을 수일같이 여길 정도로 뜨거운 사랑의 마음으로 세월을 이긴 것을 성경은 말씀하고 있습니다(창 29:18-20). 7년의 세월을 날 수로 따진다면 2,555일입니다. 얼마나 장구한 기간입니까? 그런데도 야곱은 그 피땀 나는 노동의 날들을 불과 수일같이 여기고 지냈다고 말씀하고 있지 않습니까? 그 비결이 바로 사랑입니다.
성도 여러분! 연초에 주님을 사랑하고, 교회를 사랑하고, 친구를 사랑하겠다는 사랑의 결심은 365일 중 마지막 달을 지나면서 어떻게 되었습니까? 금년 정월, 2월에는 뜨겁더니 7, 8월 지나 연말이 될 때, 세월 따라 사랑의 열기가 다 식지는 않았습니까? 사도 바울은 에베소 교인들을 위하여 3년 동안이나 밤낮으로 쉬지 않고 눈물로 각 사람을 훈계하고 사랑으로 양육했습니다.
사랑은 율법을 완성합니다(롬 13:8,10). 그 뜨거운 사랑으로, 하나님께서는 우리를 사랑해 주셨고, 또 사랑하라 명령하고 계십니다(마 22:37-40). 집을 나간 자식을 기다리는 아비의 심정으로, 하나님은 우리의 인생을 사랑하시고 돌아오기를 기다리십니다. 육신의 부모는 혹 나를 버린다고 할지라도, 하나님은 결코 버리지 않고 영접해 주십니다. 품에 안으시고 아가페의 그 뜨거운 사랑으로 품어 주시기에, 우리는 세월의 유혹 앞에 연약해지지 않고, 사명의 열기가 식지 않고 전진할 수 있는 것입니다.
2. 신앙은 세월의 유혹을 이기게 합니다.
야곱의 아들 요셉은 자기의 형편과 처지, 입장과 환경을 완전히 초월하여 하나님만을 경외하고 살았습니다. 아버지의 사랑을 받든지, 종살이하는 보디발의 집에 있든지, 부잣집 아들 시절이든, 노예 시절이든, 아니면 자유의 몸이든, 감옥에 갇힌 영어(囹圄)의 몸이든, 오직 하나님 앞에, 하나님만을 두려워하며 신뢰하며 살았습니다. 큰 오해를 받고 감옥에 갇혀 지내는 2년의 세월도 요셉의 청춘과 가슴 속에서 불타오르는 믿음을 쓰러뜨리지는 못했습니다.
시므온과 안나도 마찬가집니다. 둘 다 나이 많은 노인이었지만 메시야를 대망하는 뜨거운 신앙은 세월의 흐름을 멈추게 하여 결국 주님을 만나고야 말았습니다. 세월이 성도를 이기는 것이 아니고 성도의 큰 믿음이 세월을 이긴 것입니다. 이처럼 성도의 믿음만 있으면 악한 세월 앞에서도, 진한 유혹의 세월 속에서도 자신의 신앙을 지켜 나갈 수가 있는 것입니다. 그래서 사도 요한은 ‘세상을 이기는 것은 오직 예수를 믿는 믿음’이라고 하였던 것입니다(요일 5:4-5).
3. 신앙 인격은 세월의 유혹을 극복할 수 있습니다.
‘인격’이란 ‘사람이 사람으로서 가지는 자격과 품격’을 말합니다. 세월의 유혹을 이길 정도의 고상한 신앙 인격을 가진 인물 중 하나가 아브라함의 늙은 몸종 엘리에셀이었습니다. 창 15:1-4, 24 말씀을 볼 때, 아브라함의 늙은 종 엘리에셀은 주인과 생사고락을 같이한 사람입니다. 아브라함은 며느리를 고르는 중요한 일에도 그를 보냈습니다. 엘리에셀은 백발이 되도록, 남이 보고 안보고 간에 매사에 충성했고, 작은 일에도 충성한 사람입니다. 세월의 흐름을 넘어 백발이 되도록 충성한 신앙 인격의 모습이 아니겠습니까? 아브라함도 마찬가지입니다. 매사에 하나님 앞에 충성한 결과로, 하나님과 더불어 언약을 맺고 하나님의 벗으로 칭함 받는 큰 축복을 받게 되었던 것입니다(대하 20:7).
4. 꿈은 세월의 유혹을 극복합니다.
10대 소년 요셉을 보십시오. 그는 두 번씩이나 꿈을 꾸었고, 그 꿈으로 인해 형들한테 조롱과 멸시와 죽을 고통의 지경에까지 이르게 됐었습니다. 보디발의 집에서는 쾌락의 유혹에 시달렸고, 감옥에서는 억울함의 한을 삭혀야 했습니다. 이 고난의 13년의 세월 동안 그의 꿈은 수없이 도전을 받게 되었던 것입니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 요셉은 세월의 유혹을 물리쳤고, 자신의 꿈을 실현하였습니다. 형들은 그를 잡아 죽이기를 꾀하면서 “그 꿈이 어떻게 되나 보자”(창 37:18-20)고 하였지만, 그들의 핍박이 결코 요셉의 꿈을 꺾지 못했습니다.
결론
벌써 한 해를 마감하는 셔터가 내려오고 있습니다. 금년 한 해의 문을 닫기 전에, 악하고 유혹적인 세월 따라 잊어버린 것, 식은 것, 잊힌 것, 포기한 것, 놓쳐 버린 소중한 것들을 믿음으로 챙기시기 바랍니다. 죄악된 삶의 헌 옷을 벗어 던지고, 새 사람으로 갈아입기를 바라겠습니다. 그리고 우리 모두가 하나님의 언약과 같이 아름다운 새 역사를 창조하는 일에 동참하는 마음으로 더더욱 충성하시기를 바랍니다.
