He who lives according to the Word of God
Today’s Scripture text speaks about an incident that took place in the 10th year of King Zedekiah, just before the fall of Jerusalem when it was besieged by the Babylonian army, and was prophesied by the Prophet Jeremiah while he was incarcerated. The Prophet Jeremiah was a great servant of God who lived in the gloomy and hopeless society where there was no light but plagued by many crimes and poverty without the trace of morals, filled with turmoil and chaos due to numerous maladministration and battles. That was why he risked his life to confidently testify the Word of God before the king and presented the true way for the nation and the people to take in order to live. Of those, today’s Scripture text in particular gives us a hopeful message about the “restoration” through the symbolic action depicted in the purchase of the field at Anathoth that already fell in the hands of Babylon.
I. The Word that symbolizes freedom from Babylonian captivity- Buy the field at “Anathoth.”
This Word of God came to the Prophet Jeremiah as a shock because it was during the time when the Babylonian army besieged Jerusalem, and he was confined in the courtyard of the guard in the royal palace. It was, “When Hanamel son of Shallum your uncle comes to you and say, ‘buy my field at Anathoth,’ you must buy it.” This field was already a part of a region that belonged to Babylon, and it did not make any sense especially to the Prophet himself who prophesied about the fall of Israel by Babylon was buying that field. However, the strong symbol of “restoration” is contained here that the nation of Judah will ultimately be freed from the Babylonian captivity and will return to its homeland. That is why the Prophet Jeremiah gave 17 shekels of silver to Hanamel and bought the field at Anathoth as God had commanded. Hypothetically speaking, if Japan occupies our land, or we know that the North Korean People’s Army is coming to invade and take over this land, who will spend his own money to buy a land? Likewise, who would be a fool enough to buy a field that was already occupied by Babylon and will be ruled by Babylon in the future? However, God is proclaiming a clear message to us through this symbolic action. It is the fact that the nation of Babylon will not invade and oppress Israel forever. Even though it is collapsed by Babylon at this moment, God foresees the time of freedom that will take place in the future and already begins to prepare for it. That is why He commanded Jeremiah who was confined in prison to buy that field. Hence, the field that the Prophet Jeremiah purchased became the Field of Hope for the Israelites as well as the Field of Prophecy that foretells the Israelites that they will return from their exile in Babylon.
II. He who has “today” has the spiritual eye that sees the future.
The fact that the incarcerated Prophet prophesied the fall of Israel by Babylon had purchased the field is nothing but the contradiction and the paradox. However, the Prophet Jeremiah was a man of God who had spiritual eyes to see the future. That was why he obeyed the command of God and purchased the field in the midst of fateful tragedy of darkness. In short, he was the spiritual man who lived “today” while seeing the day breaks of “tomorrow” and the “morning after next.” Do you the believers have “today” such as this within you? If we lose today, we will lose the time of tomorrow, the day after tomorrow and the future in its entirety. That is why the Bible demands us to be faithful “today.” The Prophet Jeremiah clearly told King Zedekiah about the current situation of “today.” He said, “Under current circumstances, it is impossible to win against the Babylonian Army, and we will endure great damage. Therefore, it would be wise to quickly surrender to Babylon and please plan for the future.” Jeremiah clearly told the king that the way for the king and his people to live today is to stop the war and surrender. This was the Will of God. Nevertheless, what ended up happening to King Zedekiah who rebelled against the Word of God? As it was prophesied by the Prophet, the sons of the king were beheaded right before his eyes, and the king himself was tragically dragged to Babylon in chains after both of his eyes were extracted. It is a result of not having the eyes to see the future because there was no “today.” This occurred when King Zedekiah was 32 years old. Isn’t this the tragic end of one’s life that he lost his country at this young age, lost his sons and his family, and both of his eyes were extracted? If he listened to the Word of the Prophet one year prior to this incident and clearly understood the circumstances surrounding “today” and obeyed, this was a disaster that could have been prevented. It is likewise for King Jehoiachin who was a king prior to Zedekiah. When Jeremiah prophesied with the same prophecy to King Jehoiachin, the king said, “you never prophesy something good but only bad,” and confined him in the prison, ripped the Word of God with swords and burned them. As a whole, this shows the true image of saddened mankind who did not possess the eyes for the future because they did not understand “today.” It is identical to Hanamel the cousin of the Prophet Jeremiah. Right before the fall, didn’t he come to the prison with an intent to sell the field at any cost because he did not know the future? He mistakenly thought that he instantly made lots of profit by selling that field because he thought his field was soon to be taken by the enemy. However, he would have never sold that field if he had spiritual eyes to see that particular field was the Field of Hope and the Field of Future. Because only Jeremiah the man of God had “today,” he was able to walk on the path to prepare for a bright future.
Conclusion
Those who have “today” are the prophets of the future. We cannot desire for “tomorrow” with the wicked hearts of “today.” If we realize that “bright day of tomorrow” will come when we fix “today,” I sincerely hope that we all will purchase the field at Anathoth like the Prophet Jeremiah so that we can use it as the cradle of blessing for our descendants for generations to come, the cradle for prayer and grace as well as the spiritual foundation of faith that prepares for the second coming of the Lord.
하나님의 말씀대로 사는 사람
오늘 본문은 시드기야왕 10년에, 예루살렘이 바벨론 군대에 포위돼 함락 직전에 일어 난 사건으로, 예레미야 선지자가 감옥에 갇혀서 예언한 말씀입니다. 예레미야 선지자 는 광명이 없고 암담한 사회. 온갖 범죄와 빈곤에 시달리며 도덕은 찾아볼 수가 없을 정도의 악정과 전란(#)(L)으로 혼란한 사회에서 살던 위대한 하나님의 종이 었습니다.
그러하기에 자신의 목숨을 걸고 왕 앞에서 당당히 하나님의 말씀을 증거하며 민족의 살길, 민족이 진정으로 나아가야 할 길을 제시했던 것입니다. 그중에서도 특별히 오늘 본문에서는, 이미 바벨론의 수중에 넘어간 아나의 땅을 구입하는 상징적인 행동을 통해 우리에게 ‘회복’에 대한 희망의 메시지를 던져 주고 있습니다.
1. 바벨론 유수에서의 해방을 상징하는 말씀 .’아나돗’의 밭을 사라
바벨론 군대는 예루살렘을 포위하고 있고, 예레미야 선지자는 왕의 시위대 뜰에 갇혀 있는 때에 임하신 하나님의 말씀치고는 너무나 충격적인 말씀이 선지자에게 임했습니 다. 숙부의 아들 하나멜’이 와서 받을 사라 할 때 그 밭을 사라는 것입니다.
이미 바벨론의 수중으로 넘어간 지역의 땅, 더군다나 바벨론에 의해 이스라엘이 멸망 될 것을 예언하고 있는 선지자 자신이 그 땅을 산다는 것은 도무지 이치로 보아 맞지 않는 행동일 수밖에 없습니다. 그러나 이는 궁극적으로 유대 나라가 바벨론 유수에서 해방되어 본토로 돌아온다는 강한 회복의 상징이 담겨 있는 내용입니다.
그래서 예레미야 선지자는 하나님의 명령대로 은 17세겔을 달아서 하나멜에게 주고 아나에 있는 그 땅을 구입하였습니다. 만약 일본이 이 땅을 점령하고, 인민군이 쳐 들어와서 점령한다는 사실을 안다면, 누가 자기의 돈을 들여 그 땅을 사려 하겠습니 까? 마찬가지로, 이미 바벨론이 점령하고 있고 앞으로 바벨론에 의해 점령당하게 될 그 땅을 사는 어리석은 사람이 어디 있겠습니까? 그러나 하나님께서는 이 상징적인 행동을 통해 우리에게 분명한 메시지를 선포하고 계십니다.
이는 바벨론 나라가 언제까지나 이스라엘을 점령하지 않는다는 사실입니다. 비록 지 금 바벨론에 함락되지만, 장차 얻게 될 해방의 때를 이미 내다보고 그때를 벌써 대비 하고 계신 것입니다. 그래서 감옥에 있는 예레미야에게 그 땅을 구입하라 명령하셨던 것입니다. 그러므로 예레미야 선지자가 구입한 그 땅은 이스라엘에게 소망의 땅이요, 장차 바벨론 유수에서 돌아올 것을 예언해 주는 예언의 땅이 되었던 것입니다.
2. 오늘이 있는 자는 미래를 보는 영의 눈을 가진 자입니다.
감옥에 갇혀 바벨론에게 점령당할 것을 예언하는 선지자가 땅을 구입했다는 것은 모 순이요 역설이 아닐 수 없습니다. 그러나 예레미야 선지자는 미래를 볼 줄 아는 영의 눈을 가진 하나님의 사람이었습니다. 그렇기 때문에 하나님의 말씀에 순종해서, 운명 적인 비극의 암흑 속에서도 받을 샀던 것입니다. 한마디로 그는 동터 오는 내일과 모 레를 보면서 오늘을 살았던 영의 사람입니다. 이러한 오늘이 성도 여러분들에게도 있습니까? 오늘을 잃으면 내일과 모레, 미래의 시간 전체를 잃어버리게 됩니다. 그래서 성경은 늘 오늘에 충실할 것을 우리에게 요구하고 있는 것입니다. 예레미야 선지자는 시드기야왕에게도 오늘의 상황을 정확하게 알려 줬습니다..-“작금의 형편으로는 도 저히 바벨론 군대를 이길 수 없고 엄청난 피해만 입게 됩니다. 그러니 바벨론에 빨리 항복하고 훗날을 도모하는 것이 현명한 길입니다.” 전쟁을 중지하고 항복하는 것이 오늘 왕과 그의 백성들이 살길임을 분명히 전했습니다. 이것이 하나님의 뜻이었습니 다. 그럼에도 불구하고 하나님의 말씀을 거역했던 시드기야왕의 말로가 어떻게 되었 습니까? 선지자의 예언대로 왕의 아들들은 왕이 보는 앞에서 목이 잘렸고, 왕 자신도 두 눈이 뽑혀 비참하게 바벨론으로 끌려가는 신세가 되고 말았습니다. 오늘이 없었기 에 미래를 보는 눈도 없었던 결과입니다.
그때가 시드기야왕의 나이 32세 때의 일입니다. 그 젊은 나이에 나라를 잃고, 자식과 가족을 잃고, 자신도 두 눈이 뽑히고 말았으니 인생의 마지막이 아닙니까? 1년 전에, 선지자의 말을 듣고 오늘의 상황을 정확히 파악하고 순종했더라면 피할 수 있었던 재난입니다.
시드기야왕 직전 왕이었던 여호야긴왕도 마찬가집니다. 그 왕에게도 예레미야 선지자 가 동일한 말씀으로 예언하자, 길한 예언은 하지 않고 흉한 예언만 한다’며 옥에 가 두고, 하나님의 말씀을 칼로 찢고 불에 태우기까지 했습니다. 하나같이 오늘을 깨닫지 못하는 자들, 그래서 미래의 눈을 갖지 못한 안타까운 인간들의 실상을 보여 주고 있 는 것입니다.
그것은 예레미야 선지자의 사촌 하나멜도 마찬가지입니다. 미래를 모르기 때문에, 멸 망을 앞두고 있는 그 땅을 헐값에라도 팔고자 감옥에까지 찾아오지 않았습니까? 자신 은 당장 많은 이득을 본 것으로 착각하고 있습니다. 곧 있으면 빼앗길 수밖에 없는 땅을 팔아서 돈을 벌었으니 말입니다. 그러나 그 땅이 희망의 땅이요, 소망의 땅임을 볼 수 있는 영의 눈이 있었다면 결코 팔지 않았을 것입니다. 오직 하나님의 사람 예 레미야 선지자만이 오늘’이 있었기에 밝은 미래를 준비하는 뜻의 길을 걸어갈 수 있 었던 것입니다.
결론
오늘이 있는 자는 미래의 예언자들입니다. 오늘 좋지 못한 마음을 가지고 내일 을 기대할 수는 없습니다. 오늘을 고야 내일 밝은 날이 온다는 것을 깨닫는다면, 우리는 예레미야 선지자와 같이 아나에 있는 하나멜의 받을 사서, 자손만대 축복의 요람지, 기도와 은혜의 요람, 주의 재림을 대비하는 신령한 신앙의 터전을 준비하는 성도님들이 되시기 바랍니다.
