Why would you forsake your God who is the Spring of Living Water and dig your own cisterns?
The Bible tells us that the blessing and curse for the Israelites depended on their faith in God.
When they trusted God, they drove out the 7 nations in Canaan and conquered the Land flowing
with milk and honey. On the contrary, today’s Scripture text emphasizes that not only the
individual but the households and clans of all Israel will be destroyed if they forsake the LORD
who is the Spring of Living Water. In short, the Israelites committed sins of forsaking the LORD
who is the Spring of Living Water and digging their own cisterns. Here, “have dug cisterns by
themselves” denotes their humanistic faith to rely on oneself, man or material.
I. God is the Spring of Living Water.
Biologically speaking, we can say that a man is born in water, lives while receiving benefits of
water and dies. Actually, 90% of blood, 80% of brain and 70% of flesh consist of water in
human body; and this water regulates the body temperature and plays a crucial role in
transporting nutrients such as vitamins. Thus, a man cannot live if he is not supplied with water.
Because we know that the human civilization too has started where there was sufficient water
supply, we can say that not only water is indispensable condition for human life but also an
epitome of life. Like a man needs water, he also needs eternal religion. That is why the mankind,
regardless of ages and countries, has worshipped god of any format, requested blessings and
lived in its name. If so, we can say it is an important issue to find out where we seek not only the
“actual water” but “Living Water” that denotes eternal religion. From today’s Scripture text, God
is clearly telling us that He is the answer to this issue. “Only God is the Spring of Living Water.”
Nevertheless, the Israelites forsook the LORD who is the Spring of Living Water and foolishly
tried so hard to dig broken cisterns by themselves. We see from the history of the Old Testament
that the Israelites mocked the prophets who were sent by God and even killed them. We can also
see an incident where they confined Prophet Jeremiah in a well. However, what these actions
ultimately tell us is that these were nothing but challenging actions against God who is the
Spring of Living Water and also the rebellious actions to change God into something that is not
God. It is stated in Ps 36:7-9, “People take refuge in the shadow of your wings. They feast on the
abundance of your house; you give them drink from your river of delights, Moreover, by saying
“For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light,” the Psalmist is encouraging us
once again to appear before the LORD who is the Spring of Living Water.
II. God is “who He is.”
When God says He is the Spring and the origin of Living Water, it means He is who He is.
Nietzsche who once said, “God is dead” is dead and perished while God is still living. God’s
revelation to Moses in Exo 3:14 as “I am who I am” denotes that He is Self-existing Being,
Everlasting Being, and Essential Being that is Fundamental and Absolute. Hence, God is not a
finite being like a broken cistern but the “Spring of Living Water” that springs forth endlessly
and flows eternally to become the “Spring of Life” to mankind. Of the creatures that exist in this
world, there is nothing that self-exists or randomly exists. However, only God self-exists. God is
neither restricted by anyone nor does He feel limited. He is the Master of the universe that
independently exists and hovers over regardless of the past, present or future. The way to seek
and meet this God is possible through His Word and revelations. When God Himself appears
before us and reveals to us, we can meet Him. A fool says in his heart, “There is no God” (Ps
14:1). A wicked man proudly says, “There is no room for God in all his thoughts” and “there is
no God” (Ps 10:4). He is like a fool who dug his own broken cistern. Thus, those who “meet self-
existing God” and “always receive the blessing of Living Water daily in their lives” are those
whose hearts are pure and will see God (Mt 5:8).
III. God is the Origin of all lives.
A man cannot live away from God even for a second. It is because only God is the Origin of life
to all mankind. Like all living organisms conserve life through water, a man can conserve his
spiritual life only through God. No matter how rich a land may be, it instantly becomes a
wasteland if there is no water. A branch must remain in the vine in order for it to survive. No
matter how expensive a fish may be, it will start to rot the moment it left water. The Apostle
John reproached the Church in Sardis by saying, “You have a reputation of being alive, but you
are dead” (Rev 3:1). Isn’t this the Word that refers to a fish that has left water as well as the
Word that rebukes the current state of the mankind who left God? Because God is the Spring of
Living Water, He is abundant and sufficient. There is no insufficiency in Him even if all
mankind drinks from Him. It is God who is the Origin of life that gives water that “never makes
you thirsty” like the water that the woman from the City of Sychar desired.
Conclusion
Are you suffering from the torment to draw up water everyday like the woman
from the City of Sychar? If you hold onto Jesus Christ who is standing by that well, you can
receive the Spring of Everlasting Living Water. Through today’s message, I sincerely hope that
all of you would leave from the foolishness to dig your own broken cisterns but return to God
once again and receive the life within God.
생수의 근원이신 하나님을 버리고 스스로 웅덩이를 파느냐?
이스라엘 백성의 축복과 저주는 하나님을 믿는 믿음의 여부에 따라 좌우되었음을 성경은 말해 주고 있습니다. 하나님을 믿을 때, 가나안 7족속을 정복하고 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅을 차지한 반면에, 생수의 근원이신 하나님을 저버릴 때, 개인뿐 아니라 이스라엘 모든 집과 가족이 멸망하게 될 것을 오늘 본문에서 강조하고 있습니다. 한마디로 이스라엘은 생수의 근원이신 하나님을 버리고, 스스로 웅덩이를 판 죄를 범한 것입니다. 여기서 ‘스스로 웅덩이를 팠다’는 말은 자신을 믿고, 사람이나 물질을 의지하는 인본주의적인 신앙을 말하고 있습니다.
1. 하나님은 생수의 근원이십니다.
생물학적으로 볼 때, 인간은 물에서 태어나 물의 덕을 보며 살다가 죽는다고 말할 수 있습니다. 실제로 사람의 몸은 피의 90%, 뇌의 80%, 살의 70%가 물로 되어 있으며, 이 물은 체온 조절과 비타민 등과 같은 영양소를 운반하는 핵심적인 역할을 하고 있다고 합니다. 그러므로 사람은 물을 공급받지 못하면 살 수 없는 존재인 것입니다. 인류의 문명 또한 물이 충분한 곳에서부터 시작했음을 알 수 있기에, 물은 인간 생활에 필수적인 조건일 뿐만 아니라 생명의 대명사라 할 수 있습니다.
이처럼 사람에게 물이 필요하듯, 인간은 영원한 종교가 필요합니다. 그래서 인류는 동서고금을 막론하고 어떤 형식이든지 신을 예배하고, 신에게 복을 빌고, 그의 이름으로 살아가는 것입니다. 그렇다면 표면적인 물뿐 아니라 영원한 종교를 가리키는 ‘생명의 물’을 어디에서 구하느냐가 중요한 문제라 할 수 있습니다. 오늘 본문에서 하나님은 이 문제에 대한 해답이 되심을 말씀해 주고 있습니다. “하나님만이 바로 생수의 근원이십니다”.
그런데도 이스라엘 백성들은 생수의 근원이신 하나님을 버리고, 터진 웅덩이와 같이 어리석은 스스로의 웅덩이를 파려고 애쓰고 있는 것입니다. 구약의 역사를 볼 때도, 하나님께서 보낸 선지자들을 백성들이 무시하고, 심지어 죽이기까지 했습니다. 예레미야 선지자는 우물 속에 가두기까지 했음을 볼 수 있습니다. 그러나 결국 이 모든 행위는 생수의 근원이신 하나님께 대한 도전이요, 신을 신 아닌 것으로 바꾸는 반역의 행위였던 것입니다. 시 36:7-9 말씀을 볼 때, ‘인생이 주의 날개 그늘 아래 피하며 주의 복락의 강수로 마시운다’고 말씀하고 있습니다. 나아가, “대저 생명의 원천이 주께 있사오니 주의 광명 중에 우리가 광명을 보리이다”라고 함으로써 다시 한번 생수의 근원이신 주께 나아올 것을 권면하고 있습니다.
2. 하나님은 스스로 계신 분입니다.
하나님께서 생수의 근원이고 원천이라는 말씀은 곧, 스스로 계신 분이라는 뜻입니다. 니체는 ‘신은 죽었다’고 말했지만, 그렇게 말한 니체는 죽고 없어도 여전히 하나님은 살아 계십니다. 하나님께서 모세에게 출 3:14에서 계시해 주신 ‘스스로 계신 하나님’은 자존자요, 영원자요, 본질적이고 절대적이며 필수적인 존재를 뜻합니다. 그러므로 하나님은 터진 웅덩이와 같이 유한한 존재가 아니라, 끊임없이 솟아나서 영원토록 인류에게 생명의 원천이 되는 ‘생수의 근원’이신 것입니다.
이 세상 피조물 가운데 스스로 존재하거나 우연히 존재하는 것은 하나도 없습니다. 그러나 하나님만이 스스로 계십니다. 하나님은 누구에게도 제한을 받거나, 어떤 한계를 느끼지 않습니다. 과거와 현재와 미래와 관계없이, 독자적으로 존재하면서 운행하시는 주인이 되는 것입니다. 그 하나님을 발견하고 만나는 것은 그분의 말씀과 계시에 의해서 가능합니다. 하나님 스스로 나타나셔서 우리에게 계시해 주실 때 그분을 만날 수 있습니다.
어리석은 자는 그 마음에 이르기를 하나님이 없다 합니다(시 14:1). 악인은 교만한 얼굴로 말하기를 “여호와께서 이를 감찰치 아니하신다 하며 그 모든 사상에 하나님이 없다” 합니다(시 10:4). 마치 스스로 터진 웅덩이를 파는 어리석은 자와 같습니다. 그러므로 스스로 계신 하나님을 만나는 삶, 날마다의 삶 속에서 생수의 축복을 받는 자는 마음이 청결하여 하나님을 보는 자입니다(마 5:8).
3. 하나님은 모든 생명의 근원이십니다.
사람은 분초라도 하나님을 떠나서 살 수 없습니다. 왜냐하면, 하나님만이 우리 모든 인류에게 생명의 근원이시기 때문입니다. 세상 모든 생물체가 물을 통해서 그 생명을 보존할 수 있듯이, 사람은 하나님을 통해서만 그 영적 생명이 보존될 수 있는 것입니다. 아무리 비옥한 땅이라도 물이 없으면 삽시간에 불모지가 되고 맙니다. 포도나무가 가지에 붙어 있지 않으면 살 수가 없습니다. 아무리 좋은 고기라도 물을 떠나서는 그 물고기도 순간적으로 변질하고 맙니다.
사도 요한은 사데 교회를 가리켜 책망하기를 “살았다 하는 이름은 있으나 실상은 죽은 자로다”(계 3:1)라고 말씀하였습니다. 이는 물을 떠난 고기를 가리키는 말씀이요, 생명의 근원이신 하나님을 떠난 인류의 현주소를 질책하는 말씀이 아니겠습니까?
하나님은 생수의 근원이시기에 풍족합니다. 만 인간이 떠서 먹어도 모자람이 없습니다. 수가성 여인이 원했던 ‘영원히 목마르지 않는 물’을 주시는 분이 바로 생명의 근원이신 하나님입니다.
결론
수가성 여인과 같이 매일 물을 긷는 고통을 겪고 있습니까? 그 우물 곁에 계신 예수 그리스도를 붙잡으면 영원한 생수의 근원을 얻게 됩니다. 다시 한번 오늘 말씀을 통해 스스로의 웅덩이를 파려는 어리석음을 버리고 하나님께 돌아오고, 하나님 안에서 생명을 공급받아 살아가는 성도님들이 되시기를 바라겠습니다.
