The life of a giver is more blessed and joyful
The Apostle Paul was a great worker of gospel that proclaimed the gospel of Christ all over the
world while he was on 3 missionary journeys. Acts 20:31-38 tells the members of the church in
Ephesus how the Apostle Paul displayed himself when he worked at the last stage of his
ministry. The Apostle Paul who ceaselessly and tearfully took care of the church in Ephesus for
3 years confessed confidently that he had “not coveted anyone’s silver or gold or clothing but
supplied for his own needs and the needs of his companions by himself; and not only he set
himself as a great example on everything he did but also helped the weak and acted upon the
Word of Jesus that it was ‘more blessed to give than to receive.’”
I. God will give righteousness as gifts to those who give.
It is said in 2Cor 9:9-10, “They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor; their righteousness
endures forever.” What this means is that if you help the poor and the underprivileged ones with
compassionate heart, the righteousness of heaven will remain on your head forever even if you
have committed many sins. This actually speaks about the grace and mercy of our God who
rewards the givers with His righteousness. The givers always feel joy and satisfaction first when
they give. We can give thanks to God instead with a grateful heart and said, “Before, we have
always held onto what is ours and even tried to turn what belonged to others into ours; but now,
such wicked heart has disappeared, and we are trying to help others with kind heart.” Rather, we
live a life to glorify and give thanks to God while we help others. Jesus commanded us to “give!”
An act of giving means to share the gift of love with the grace of God. A gift is something given
to others to show a token of love. It is first a heart that one cannot see. A gift is something you
give to others out of love for that person even though you know you get nothing in return. It is
never considered a gift if one boasts about giving, or if it is a repayment for a favor one owed; or
one desires for something bigger in return. Thus, a “true giving” is not possible if God’s grace is
not there. A “true giver” is someone like the Apostle Paul that has attitude of “not done by me
but by the grace of God.” It is given freely without self-interest, and that is why a gift is simply
an expression towards others about overwhelming grace of God and thanksgiving, as well as an
expression of love. Because a gift is something given with the grace of God, given freely without
waiting for anything in return, a gift is not an act of barter or business transaction. That is why
those who are grateful for God’s grace of redemption can truly give.
II. Give freely what you have received for free.
What is the gift of God that we the believers must offer to our neighbors? This means we too
must give freely to others what we have received freely from God. That is the love of gospel.
When we received the gospel of life from Jesus Christ, we received it freely without paying for
the price or making achievements. We received everything under the universe-the gift of natural
revelations- all these things like the sky, earth, the sun, the moon, and the starts that are floating
in the skies, and air for free. Just prior to his death, David realized this grace (1Chr 29:10-22).
Moreover, we also received special revelation, which is the grace of salvation. We see in Jn 3:16
that God so loved the world that He gave His Only Son to save us. Not only that, He gave us the
grace of the Holy Spirit so that we may be able to understand His world that is so deep (1Cor
2:10). Did we not receive the spiritual sword of the Word and everlasting faith through the Word
of the Bible so that we can overcome the wicked world? All of these are contained in the “gospel.”
These are what God gave us without a cost. Since we received them for free, we should
also share them with our neighbors without charge. The duty of today’s Church is to share the
gospel we received without charge. The generous churches will survive in the Last Days, but
ungenerous churches are destined to be perished. Thus, the churches of our Lord that have been
established must endure two miracles of life. First, we must proclaim the gospel outwardly
toward the non-believers so that they can accept God and understand salvation. Second, when
they enter the church, we have the responsibility to teach and spiritually train them with the
heavenly hope, the believers’ proper ways of living according to the Word, and the ways to
salvation so that they become the disciples of Jesus with the personality that God desires. This
indeed is essential meaning for the survival of the Church, and the purpose and the value of its
existence contained here. It is said in Lk 6:38, “Give and it will be given to you. A good
measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.” Isn’t
this indeed the duty and the blessing for today’s church? At the cross, Jesus gave love first to the
mankind. When we remember that the first phrase out of 7 phrases that Jesus spoke on the cross
was the Word of forgiveness, we know that forgiveness is the act of giving love. If we scatter our
wealth and love to save others with a heart like our Lord’s, we will never perish. The Bible
clearly tells us that we will be wealthy instead (Prov 11:24-25). We lend to the Lord whenever
we are compassionate for the poor, and God will reward our kind act (Prov 19:17). As you can
see, those who help and take care of the poor will be blessed and be delivered in times of wrath
(Ps 41:1).
Conclusion
True church of God that is established on this earth is the giving church. Only the
giving church will revive, grow and survive. Therefore, a secret to church’s victory is as follows.
First, we must give gospel. Next, we must comfort the poor with warm embrace and help them.
The selfish families and selfish churches can never grow. I sincerely believe that the doors of
heaven will be widely open to the “giving church.” We can become the head of the nation and
stand firm in the Assembly of the Firstborn.
주는 자의 삶이 복되고 행복하다
사도 바울은 3차에 걸친 전도 여행을 하며 당시 전 세계에 그리스도의 복음을 전한 위대한 복음의 일꾼이었습니다. 행 20:31-38 말씀은 사도 바울이 사역의 마지막 단계에서 자신이 어떤 자세로 일해 왔는가를 에베소 교인들에게 회고하는 장면입니다. 3년이나 밤낮 쉬지 않고 눈물로 에베소 교회를 돌봤던 사도 바울은 “아무의 은이나 금이나 의복을 탐하지 않고” 자기 손으로 자신과 동행의 쓸 것을 당하며 범사에 모범을 보였을 뿐 아니라, 약한 사람들을 돕고 ‘주는 것이 받는 것보다 복이 있다’는 예수님의 말씀을 실천하였다고 당당하게 고백하고 있는 것입니다.
1. 주는 사람에게 하나님께서 의를 선물로 주십니다.
고후 9:9-10 말씀을 볼 때, “저가 흩어 가난한 자들에게 주었으니 그의 의가 영원토록 있느니라” 하였습니다. 이는 비록 많은 죄를 지었을지라도 가난한 자, 없는 자를 불쌍히 여기는 마음을 가지고 도와주면, 하늘의 의가 영원히 없어지지 않고 그 머리 위에 머물러 있다는 말입니다. 바로 하나님께서 주는 자에게 의로 갚아 주시는 은총을 말해 주고 있습니다. 주는 사람은 먼저 마음 가운데 기쁨과 보람을 느낍니다. “전에는 움켜쥐고 놓지 않고 남의 것을 내 것으로 취하려 했는데 그러한 악한 마음이 다 없어지고 선한 마음으로 남을 도와주고자 하는구나” 하며 도리어 하나님께 감사하게 됩니다. 남을 도와주고 도리어 감사하며 하나님께 영광 돌리는 삶을 살게 되는 것입니다.
예수께서는 우리에게 ‘주라!’고 명령하셨습니다. 준다는 것은 하나님의 은혜로 사랑의 선물을 나누어 주는 것입니다. 선물이란 남한테 물질로 나타내는 사랑의 호의를 뜻합니다. 그것은 먼저 보이지 않는 마음입니다. 나한테 돌아올 게 없음에도 불구하고 상대방을 사랑하는 마음으로 주는 것이 바로 선물입니다. 선물한 것에 대해 자랑하거나, 신세 진 것을 갚는다거나, 나중에 더 큰 보상을 바라며 주는 것은 결코 선물이 아닙니다. 그러므로 진정으로 남에게 ‘주는 것’은 하나님의 은혜가 함께하지 않으면 안 됩니다. 사도 바울과 같이 “내가 한 것이 아니요 하나님의 은혜가 했다” 하는 자세가 있어야, 진정으로 ‘주는 자’입니다. 아무런 이해타산이 없이 거저 주는 것, 그래서 선물은 단순히 상대방을 향한, 하나님의 은혜에 대한 감격과 감사, 사랑의 표현입니다. 대가를 기다리지 않고 하나님의 은혜로 거저 주는 것이기에, 선물은 어떤 물물교환이나 상업행위가 아닙니다. 그러므로 하나님의 구속 은총에 감사하는 자만이 진정 줄 수가 있습니다.
2. 거저 받은 것을 거저 주라
우리 믿는 성도들이 이웃에게 베풀어야 할 하나님의 선물이 무엇입니까? 그것은 우리가 하나님께 거저 받은 것을 우리 또한 거저 주라는 것입니다. 그것은 복음의 사랑입니다. 우리가 예수 그리스도를 통해서 생명의 복음을 받되 아무 대가, 아무 공로 없이 거저 받았습니다. 우주 만물—자연 계시의 선물–을 받아 하늘과 땅, 창공에 떠 있는 해, 달, 별, 공기, 이 모든 것을 거저 받았습니다.
다윗이 임종 직전에 이 은혜를 깨달았습니다(대상 29:10-22). 또한, 특별 계시—구원의 은총–를 받았습니다. 요 3:16 말씀 볼 때, 하나님의 사랑하시는 독생자를 주셔서 우리를 구원해 주셨습니다. 그뿐만 아니라 성령의 은사를 주셔서, 하나님의 깊은 세계까지 알 수 있는 은총을 주셨습니다(고전 2:10). 성경의 말씀을 통해, 죄악 세상을 이길 수 있는 신령한 말씀의 검과 영생하는 믿음을 받지 않았습니까? 이 모두가 ‘복음’ 속에 담겨 있는 내용입니다. 하나님께서 우리에게 값없이 주신 것들입니다. 이를 거저 받았으니 우리 또한 이웃들에게 거저 나누어 주어야만 합니다.
오늘날 교회의 사명은 거저 받은 복음을 나누어 주는 데 있습니다. 주는 교회는 마지막에 살아남지만, 주지 않는 교회는 다 망할 수밖에 없습니다. 그러므로 이 땅에 세워 주신 주님의 교회는 두 가지 생명의 기적을 감당해야 합니다. 첫째는, 외부적으로 불신자를 향해 복음을 전해서, 하나님을 영접하고 구원을 깨닫게 하는 것입니다. 둘째는, 그분들이 교회에 들어오게 될 때, 천국의 소망과 성도의 사는 올바른 말씀의 삶과 구원의 도리를 가르치고 영적으로 훈련시켜서 하나님께서 원하시는 인격적인 예수의 제자로 만드는 책임입니다. 이것이 바로 교회 생존의 본질적인 의미이며, 여기에 교회의 존재 목적과 가치가 있는 것입니다. 눅 6:38 말씀을 보면, “주라 그리하면 너희에게 줄 것이니 곧 후히 되어 누르고 흔들어 넘치도록 하여 너희에게 안겨 주리라” 하셨습니다. 이것이 바로 오늘날 교회의 사명이요 축복이 아니겠습니까?
예수님께서도 십자가 상에서 가장 먼저 인류에게 사랑을 주셨습니다. 가상(架上) 7언 가운데 첫 번째 말씀이 용서의 말씀임을 상기할 때–용서란 사랑을 주는 행위입니다–이러한 주님의 마음으로 자신의 재물과 사랑을 흩어 구제하여도 절대 망하지 않습니다. 오히려 부하게 되는 일이 있다고 성경은 분명히 말씀하고 있습니다(잠 11:24-25). 가난한 자를 불쌍히 여기는 것은 여호와께 꾸이는 것이기에 그 선행을 갚아 주십니다(잠 19:17). 이처럼 가난한 자를 돕고 베푸는 자는 재앙의 날에 하나님께 건짐의 축복을 받습니다(시 41:1).
결론
이 땅에 자리 잡은 주의 참된 교회는 주는 교회입니다.
주는 교회만이 부흥하고 성장하며 살아남습니다. 그러므로 교회의 승리 비결은 첫째, 복음을 주어야 합니다. 다음으로, 가난한 자를 따뜻하게 위로하며 구제를 베풀어야 합니다. 자기만을 위하는 가정, 자기만을 위하는 교회는 절대 성장하지 못합니다. ‘주는 교회’에 천국의 문이 환하게 열릴 줄 믿습니다. 전 세계 열국의 머리가 되며, 장자의 총회 가운데 서게 됩니다.
