Let us make wise decisions
A word “selection” contains the meaning of “picking by preference” or “discarding what is bad
and choosing what is good.” Our life starts with ‘making decisions’ from the moment we are
born. From going to schools to selecting a job, and even marrying someone are important
choices that we have to make. Because the bad choices will bring forth lifelong regrets, we must
be very prudent and wise when we make choices. Not only that, a decision of faith is also a very
important issue to the believers. It is because a wrong choice made in the moments’ time like in
the cases of Pilate or Judas Iscariot can result to unforgivable sin.
I. A wrong decision made by Pilate and Judas Iscariot.
As a governor of Judea, Pilate had many opportunities to correctly judge and decide while he
interrogated Jesus. That was why he tried to send Jesus back to the people after he interrogated
Jesus and found no sin; however, he ended up hiding behind the shadows when the religious
leaders and the crowd at the time demanded in one voice, “Free Barabbas! Crucify Jesus on the
cross!” Even his wife said, “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent man” (Mt 27:19) after
she had a dream; however, her sincere plea was not able to lead him to the right way to make a
correct decision. Barabbas and Jesus! To grant amnesty to one of these two people to celebrate
the Feast, Pilate made a wrong choice by selecting Barabbas. Not only from the standpoint of
Pilate, but also from the standpoint of the crowd, Barabbas was a mere criminal who committed
gruesome murder, but Jesus was beneficial to them. Wasn’t Jesus the one who fed them when
they were hungry and healed them when they were sick? Because Pilate himself knew that Jesus
was in trouble with the crowd due to their jealousy, he tried so hard to choose Jesus. However,
he lost to the voices of the crowd. With this single statement, “If you let this man go, you are no
friend of Caesar,” Pilate did not choose the world of kindness, righteousness, and mercy but
chose the world of darkness, sinfulness, and wickedness instead. It is likewise with Judas
Iscariot. Even though he was entrusted with a precious duty as a treasurer and a beloved disciple
of Jesus, Judas Iscariot made a wrong decision when he sold his teacher and the Savior of
mankind over 30 pieces of silver. The Bible says that the devil had already prompted Judas to
betray Jesus. As a result, his heart became dark night not bright daylight (Jn 13:27, 30). When
Jesus was actually crucified and died on the cross because of his wrong decision, Judas Iscariot
who was conscience-stricken, returned the money, blamed himself and tried to commit suicide
by hanging himself on a tree. However, even a rope that was tied to his neck deserted him. Isn’t
his tragic death caused by the rupture of intestines a gruesome result of making a wrong
decision? As you can see, Pilate, the Jews, and Judas Iscariot all made wrong decisions. It was
likewise with the Israelites during the wilderness journey. We see from Num 14:2-24 that the
Israelites who grumbled at Moses and at God during the wilderness journey all died in the desert,
and only Joshua and Caleb were able to enter the Land of Canaan. It is the result of God placing
judgment directly upon the Israelites who chose a wrong path to grumble unthankfully against
God as He heard their ungrateful voices. Didn’t the Israelites wander for 2000 years as a stateless
nation and 6 million people were tragically massacred by Hitler because the people during Jesus’
time return the blood of crucifying Jesus on their children and on themselves? Hence, we must
always make a wise decision in the grace that He gives us.
II. A way to make a correct decision.
When people try to make a decision or to choose something, they would first have a direction set
in their mind. Hence, in order to correctly make a decision, one must be able to guard his heart
first. Eph 4:27 tells us a secret to make a correct decision by saying, “Do not give the devil a
foothold.” It is written in 2Cor 2:11 “Do not let Satan outwit us.” It is written in 1Pet 5:8-9,
“Resist him, standing firm in the faith.” This is a secret to make a right choice. When we arm
ourselves with full armor of faith and confront Satan and triumph, we will be able to make
correct decisions and never be deceived by Satan’s temptations. If not, then it would be easy for
our life of faith to become hypocritical. That is why it is written in 1Tim 4:2 or 1Pet 2:1 “Rid
yourselves of all hypocrisy.” Hypocrisy refers to a behavior that one’s action contradicts his
belief. That is why while one may look faithful and wise to make a right choice on the outside,
he displays a totally opposite thoughts and actions in reality. We see the examples of such cases
in King Ahab and King Hezekiah. King Ahab was a classic example of a ‘hypocrite’ who feared
the people but not God. On the contrary, King Hezekiah was blessed with God’s absolute
protection and safeguard because he feared God and not the people.
Conclusion
The reason that a “choice” is important is because of the fact that the consequence
of making a wrong decision and walking on the path of wickedness does not end with you but it
will be carried over 3-4 generations (Exo 20:5). However, those who make good choices and
obey and love God’s commandments, He will pour grace upon them over 1000 generations (Exo
20:6). We see from Deut 11:26-28 that God placed blessing and curse before us. This means we
will be blessed or cursed depending on what we choose. If so, I sincerely hope everyone to
receive blessings that God predestined for us and enjoy them over 1000 generations by making
correct choices through the Word He gives us.
선택을 잘 하자
‘선택’이라는 말은 ‘골라서 뽑는다’, ‘나쁜 것을 버리고 좋은 것을 취한다’는 뜻이 있습니다. 우리의 인생은 태어나는 순간부터 ‘선택’과 더불어 살아가게 됩니다. 학교에 진학하고 직장을 선택하는 것, 결혼하는 것도 다 중요한 선택의 문제입니다. 이러한 선택에 있어서 잘못된 선택은 평생 후회를 가져오기도 하기에, 선택은 신중하고 현명하게 가려서 해야 하는 것입니다.
그뿐만 아니라 믿는 성도들에게 있어서 신앙의 선택도 중요한 문제입니다. 빌라도나 가룟 유다처럼 한순간의 잘못된 선택이 씻을 수 없는 범죄가 되기도 하기 때문입니다.
1. 빌라도와 가룟 유다의 잘못된 선택
유대 총독으로서 빌라도는 예수를 심문하는 가운데 올바른 판단과 선택을 할 기회가 많이 있었습니다. 그래서 예수를 심문한 후 아무런 죄도 발견하지 못했다면서 백성들에게 돌려주려 했으나, 당시 종교 지도자들과 백성들이 한목소리로 “바라바를 놓아주고 예수를 십자가에 못 박으라” 주장하자 뒤로 물러서고 말았습니다. 그의 아내마저도 꿈을 꾸고 나서는 “저 옳은 사람에게 아무 상관도 하지 마옵소서“(마27:19)라고 하였으나, 아내의 간곡한 권유도 그를 올바른 선택의 길로 인도하지 못했습니다.
바라바와 예수! 명절을 맞아 이 둘 중 어느 하나를 놓아주고자 하는 선택에 있어서, 빌라도는 그만 바라바를 선택하고 말았던 것입니다. 빌라도뿐 아니라 백성들의 입장에서도 볼 때 바라바는 끔찍한 살인자에 불과하지만, 예수는 자신들에게 많은 유익을 주신 분입니다. 배가 고플 때 먹을 것을 제공해 주셨고, 병든 자들에게 고침의 은혜를 베풀어 주셨던 분이 아닙니까? 빌라도 자신도 백성들의 시기로 인해 예수께서 곤경에 처해 있다는 것을 알았기에, 예수를 선택하고자 애를 쓰긴 썼습니다. 그러나 결국 백성들의 소리에 지고 말았던 것입니다. “예수를 십자가에 못 박지 아니하면 가이사의 충신이 아닙니다”라는 말 한마디에 선과 의, 자비의 세계를 선택하지 못하고 어둠의 세계, 죄와 악을 선택하고 말았던 것입니다.
가룟 유다도 마찬가집니다. 예수님의 사랑받는 제자로서 회계 담당이라고 하는 귀중한 직분까지 맡은 그였지만, 은 30냥에 자기 스승을, 인류의 구세주를 팔아넘기는 잘못된 선택을 하고 말았던 것입니다. 성경은 사단이 그의 마음에 예수를 팔 마음을 넣어 줬다고 했습니다. 그 결과로, 그의 마음은 환한 낮이 아니라 캄캄한 밤이 되고 말았습니다(요 13:27,30). 그러나 정작 자신의 잘못된 선택 때문에 예수께서 십자가에 돌아가시자, 양심의 가책을 받은 가룟 유다는 그 돈을 돌려주고, 자책한 나머지 나무에 목을 매고 죽고자 했으나 그의 목을 맨 끈마저도 그를 버렸습니다. 그리하여 창자가 터져 죽고 만 가룟 유다의 비참한 최후는 잘못된 선택이 가져다준 끔찍한 결과가 아니겠습니까?
이처럼 빌라도나 유대인들, 그리고 가룟 유다는 잘못된 선택을 한 사람들입니다. 광야 시대의 이스라엘 백성들도 마찬가지였습니다. 민 14:2 말씀을 볼 때, 광야에서 모세에게 불평하며 하나님을 원망하던 이스라엘 백성들은 결국 광야에서 다 죽고, 여호수아, 갈렙 두 사람만이 가나안 땅에 들어갈 수 있었습니다. 감사치 못하고 불평하는 길을 택한 이스라엘 백성들의 원망 소리를 하나님께서 다 들으시고 그대로 심판하신 결과였습니다. 예수님 당시의 이스라엘 백성들도 예수 죽인 피를 자기와 후손들에게 돌림으로써 2천 년 동안 나라 없는 민족으로 유리하며, 히틀러에 의해 600만 명이 처참하게 살해되는 비극을 경험하지 않았습니까? 그러므로 우리는 늘 주시는 은혜 안에서 선택을 잘 해야만 합니다.
2. 올바른 선택을 하기 위한 방법.
사람들이 어떤 일을 결정하고 선택할 때는 먼저 마음속에 어떤 방향을 결정하게 됩니다. 그러므로 올바른 선택을 하기 위해서는 먼저 마음을 지킬 줄 알아야 합니다. 엡 4:27에는 ‘마귀로 틈타지 못하게 하라’고 올바른 선택의 비결을 말씀해 주고 있습니다. 고후 2:11에도 ‘마귀에게 속지 마라’고 하였습니다. 벧전 5:8-9에서는 ‘믿음을 굳게 해서 저를 대적하라’고 말씀하고 있습니다. 이것이 올바른 선택의 비결입니다. 믿음의 전신갑주를 입고 사단을 대적하여 승리할 때, 결코 사단의 미혹에 넘어가지 않고 올바른 선택을 할 수 있는 것입니다. 그렇지 않을 때는 신앙생활이 전부 외식에 치우치기 쉽습니다.
그래서 딤전 4:2이나 벧전 2:1에서는 외식(外飾)을 버리라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 외식이란 겉 다르고 속 다른 것을 말씀합니다. 그래서 겉은 잘 믿는 척하고 올바른 선택을 하는 것 같지만 사실은 정반대의 생각과 행위를 하기 마련입니다. 이러한 경우를 아합왕과 히스기야왕을 통해서 알 수 있습니다. 아합왕은 사람을 두려워하고 하나님을 두려워하지 않는 전형적인 ‘외식’의 사람이었습니다. 반면에 히스기야왕은 사람보다는 하나님을 두려워한 결과로 하나님의 절대 안전과 보호의 축복을 받게 되었던 것입니다.
결론
선택이 중요한 것은, 선택을 잘못하여 죄악된 길을 걸어갈 때 그것이 나에게서 끝나는 것이 아니라 그 죄가 3,4대까지 자손들에게 유전된다는 사실입니다(출 20:5). 그러나 선택을 잘 하여 하나님의 계명을 잘 지키고 사랑하는 사람에게는 천대까지 은혜를 베푸시겠다고 말씀하셨습니다(출 20:6). 신 11:26-28 말씀을 보면, 하나님께서는 우리 앞에 복과 저주를 두셨습니다. 이는 내가 어떤 선택을 하느냐에 따라 복이나 저주가 우리에게 임하게 되는 것입니다. 그렇다면 주시는 말씀 안에서 올바른 선택을 해서 하나님께서 예비하신 복을 천대까지 받아 누리시는 성도님들이 되시기 바랍니다.
