The faithful stewards of the End Times
The doctrine of “stewards” is unique doctrine that appears in the Bible. The content of its doctrine is that the master entrusted all his possessions and everything to the steward, allowed him to take care of it and then the master settles his account with his steward in due time or at the end of the year. When the master is satisfied with the outcome, he would entrust his steward with even more possessions and blessings; however, the master would become irate and entrust his steward with less if he is not (Mt 25:21, 23). When we see this, we the members of Green Hill Church are faithful stewards of the Kingdom of God. If so, have we served each other with God-given talents as we would serve God and competed with each other to do more God’s work, throughout our lives as the faithful stewards of God?
I. A steward is he who serves with various forms of grace he received from God.
The fact that God gave many talents to His believers can be interpreted as God gave unique roles to each and every one of believers. Like the performance will not be orchestrated successfully if an actor deviates from his role, the stage called the “world” will be destroyed and will ultimately bring sadness in God’s hearts if the stewards with the God-given talents fail to fulfill their responsibilities and deviate from their roles. This “script” bases its foundation on the “Bible.” The v10 of today’s Scripture text tells us to serve each other like “faithful stewards of God’s grace in various forms.” In the Parable of Talents that appears in the Book of Matthew, the reason that the servant with 1 talent buried his talent in the ground was because he was not satisfied with his given duty but grumbled in his heart. Weren’t there any dissatisfaction or grumbling in our hearts when we were doing God’s work like this servant with 1 talent? We must not grumble about God-given duties or complaint about others. Only duty that the saints of the End Times are entrusted with is to love one another, to show hospitality to one another, and to serve one another. A role to serve and a role to love are the roles that are neither famous nor they are fun. That is why the thankfulness disappears and complaints and resentment grow. When the grumbling becomes greater, then the “stage” gets disorganized and becomes chaotic. A deviation from a role, “I will not take that role” will arise. I sincerely hope that all of you will handle God-given role successfully in this year of 2022 even if the task is not easy.
II. We must work before God and not before man.
It is stated in the v11 of today’s Scripture text, “If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides.” What this means is that we must work as if we are working before God not before man. It is because the work of the Church is all God’s work. The duties such as the cell group leaders, the district leaders, the department heads and their officers, the choir members, the teachers, the offering ushers, the general ushers, the parking attendants, etc. are all God’s work. In your life of faith, have you done God’s work with the attitude as if you are working before man? Wasn’t there a time where you tried to exaggerate your duties unnecessarily or boasted more than what is actually accomplished? Wasn’t there a time where you talked the talk but not walked the walk? We find many people who would not serve with their flesh, possessions or time. We must reflect on ourselves if we were the stewards that bore no fruits but spoke more than what is actually accomplished. Have we ever made excuses for ourselves for not coming to church, or for not devoting ourselves wholeheartedly, or making justifications as to why this would not work? This is all because we understood God’s work not as God’s work but as man’s work. If we look at Mt 7:21-23, it tells us about the “judgment.” The focus of its content is that although many believers worked as prophets in the name of the Lord, casted out demons and performed many miracles and had done many wonderful works of God, the Lord is telling them “I never knew you.” It is because although you said you did God’s work, but you ultimately did man’s work under the pretense. Thus, what is important is not the amount of work but whether it was God’s work or man’s work. I sincerely hope that we all become the faithful stewards that devote and dedicate ourselves to do God’s work in this new year.
III. The faithful stewards are those who returns glory to God.
It is stated in the v11 of today’s Scripture text, “To Him be the glory and the power for ever and ever.” This teaches us that the duty of the faithful steward is to return glory to God. The stewards are those who work diligently and return back to master what is rightfully his. The biblical principle also teaches us that when we serve God with the tithes of our time, possessions and talents, God will be glorified. My beloved saints! Throughout your lives to this date, have you offered the tithes of your time? Have you found the time to pray for yourselves, your families, your church, your nation and the people, to read the Bible, to praise God, to evangelize and to serve the church and work diligently? Moreover, have you eagerly offered proper tithes of your possessions to God? Everything under the universe belongs to God, but He gave them all to us and asked us to give only one to be utilized in His ministry. If we are stingy even about this, then we are nothing but the thieves who rob what is belong to God like those who appear in Mal 3:7. I sincerely hope that we will become the believers that glorify God by wholeheartedly return the time, possessions, and talents that belong to God.
Conclusion
The workers of God will never turn back. They are those who will only look ahead and obey and obey even more and live within the mercy of redemption with thankfulness and praise. With only one mistake, Moses was not able to enter the Land of Canaan but only able to look at it regretfully from the distance and be satisfied (Deut 34:1-4). I sincerely hope that we all become kind and faithful stewards to stand before God with thankfulness and joy without regrets at the time of settlement.
마지막 때의 선한 청지기
‘청지기’의 사상은 성경에 나타난 독특한 사상입니다. 주인이 청지기에게 재산이나 모든 것을 맡기고 관리하게 한 후에 연말이나 약속한 기일에 결산을 하여, 주인이 만족하면 더 많은 축복과 함께 많은 것으로 맡기고, 진노하면 아주 적게 맡긴다는 내용입니다(마 25:21,23). 이를 볼 때, 우리 푸른동산교회 성도들은 하나님 나라의 선한 청지기들입니다. 그렇다면 지금까지 살아오면서, 하나님의 선한 청지기로서 받은 은사대로 서로 대접하기를 하나님께 하는 것처럼 하였으며, 봉사하기를 앞을 다투어 가며 하였습니까?
1. 청지기는 하나님께 받은 각양 은사로 봉사하는 자입니다.
하나님께서 우리 믿는 성도들에게 각양 은사를 주셨다는 것은, 성도 개개인에게 고유한 배역을 맡겨 주셨다는 의미로 해석할 수도 있습니다. 연극을 할 때 배우들이 자신의 배역을 이탈하면 공연이 제대로 이루어질 수 없듯이, 하나님께 은사를 받은 청지기들이 자신의 사명을 감당하지 않고 각본을 이탈하면 ‘세계’라고 하는 무대를 파괴하며, 하나님의 마음을 섭섭하게 하는 결과를 가져옵니다. 이 각본은 ‘성경’을 염두에 두고 하시는 말씀입니다.
오늘 본문 10절에서는 “하나님의 각양 은혜를 맡은 선한 청지기”같이 서로 봉사하라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 마태복음에 나오는 ‘달란트’ 비유에서 한 달란트 받은 종이 달란트를 땅에 파묻은 이유는, 자기 역할에 대해 불평하고 원망하는 마음을 먹었기 때문입니다. 우리도 주의 일을 하는 가운데 이처럼 한 달란트 받은 종과 같이 원망이나 불평하는 마음은 없었습니까? 자신에게 주어진 직분에 대해 불평하거나, 사람들을 원망해서는 안 됩니다. 말세에 성도들이 맡은 역할은 오직 서로 사랑하며, 서로 대접하고, 서로 봉사하는 일뿐입니다. 봉사의 역할, 또 사랑의 역할은 인기도 없고, 재미도 없는 배역입니다. 그래서 감사가 사라지고, 불평과 원망이 자라나게 되는 것입니다. 원망이 커지면, 어느 날 갑자기 무대가 어지럽게 되는 것입니다. “직분을 맡지 않겠다” 하는 배역 이탈이 생기게 됩니다. 좀 힘들다 해도, 올 2022년에는 맡은 배역을 멋지게 감당하는 성도님들이 되시기 바랍니다.
2. 하나님 앞에서 일하고, 사람 앞에서 일하지 말아야 합니다.
본문 11절에 보면, “누가 봉사하려면 하나님의 공급하시는 힘으로 하는 것같이 하라”고 말씀하고 있습니다. 이는, 사람 앞에서 일하는 것처럼 하지 말고 하나님 앞에서 하라는 뜻입니다. 교회의 모든 일은 바로 하나님의 일이기 때문입니다. 구역장, 지구장, 각 기관의 임원들과 성가대원, 교사, 봉헌위원, 안내위원, 교통 봉사팀 등 모든 일이 하나님의 일입니다.
지금까지 신앙생활을 하는 가운데, 사람 앞에서 일하는 태도로 봉사하지는 않았습니까? 자기의 일을 정도 이상으로 과장되게 보이려 하고, 실제로는 일한 것이 없는데 많이 한 것처럼 말만 앞세우고 떠들지는 않았습니까? 몸으로, 물질로, 시간으로 봉사하지 않는 사람들을 많이 발견할 수 있습니다. 이렇다 할 열매는 없고, 일을 한다고는 했는데 떠들기만 한 청지기는 아니었는지 되새겨 봐야 하겠습니다. 그럴듯한 이유를 들면서 교회에 나오지도 않고, 정성 다하여 충성하지도 않고, 안 되는 까닭만을 변명하며 자기 자신은 헌신하지 않은 때는 없었습니까? 그것은 아직도 하나님의 일을 하나님의 일로 알지 못하고, 사람의 일로 알았기 때문입니다. 마 7:21-23 말씀을 보면, ‘심판’에 관한 내용이 나옵니다. 그 내용의 핵심은, 많은 성도가 주의 이름으로 선지자 노릇도 하고, 귀신도 쫓아내며 많은 권능을 행하였다고 해도, 주님께서는 “내가 너희를 도무지 알지 못한다”고 말씀하고 있다는 것입니다. 나름대로 열심히 일한다고 하였지만, 결국엔 하나님의 일을 빙자하여 요란하게 사람의 일을 하였기 때문입니다. 그러므로 일의 양이 문제가 아니라, 그 일이 하나님의 일이 되었는지, 아니면 인간의 일이 되었는지가 중요한 것입니다. 새해에는 오직 하나님의 일에만 매진하는 선한 청지기들이 되시기 바랍니다.
3. 선한 청지기는 하나님께 영광을 돌려 드리는 사람입니다.
본문 11절 말씀을 보면 오직 하나님께만 영광과 권능이 세세에 무궁토록 있다고 하였습니다. 이는 하나님께 영광을 돌려 드리는 것이야말로 선한 청지기의 본분임을 가르쳐 주고 있습니다. 청지기는 열심히 일하고, 주인에게 드릴 것을 드리는 사람입니다. 성경적인 원리도, 인간이 하나님께 시간과 물질과 재능의 십일조를 드려서 봉사할 때 하나님께서 영광을 받으신다는 것을 우리에게 가르쳐 주고 있습니다.
사랑하는 성도 여러분! 지금까지 여러분들이 살아오면서 시간의 십일조를 드리고 살아왔습니까? 자신과 가족과 교회와 국가, 민족을 위해 기도하는 시간, 성경 읽는 시간, 찬송하는 시간, 전도하는 시간, 그리고 교회를 위해서 봉사하는 시간을 모두 찾아서 합당하게 일했습니까? 또한, 재물의 온전한 십일조를 하나님 앞에 힘써 드렸습니까? 우주 만물이 다 하나님 것이지만 우리한테 주시고, ‘그중 하나만 내 사업에 써 달라’ 하셨습니다. 이것까지도 아까워한다면, 말 3:7 말씀에 나오는 것처럼 하나님의 것을 도적질하는 자가 되고 맙니다. 정성을 다해, 시간과 물질과 재능을 그 주인이신 하나님께 돌려 드리므로 영광을 받으시게 하는 성도님들이 되시기 바랍니다.
결론
하나님의 일꾼들은 절대 뒤를 돌아다보지 않습니다.
오직 앞만 바라보며 순종하고 또 순종하고, 감사와 찬양으로 구속의 은총 속에서 살아가는 자들입니다. 한 번의 실수로 모세는 가나안 땅에 들어가지 못하고, 멀리서 바라보며 아쉬워하는 것으로 만족해야 했습니다(신 34:1-4). 결산의 때에 이처럼 후회하지 않고 감사와 기쁨으로 주 앞에 서는 충성스러운 선한 청지기들이 다 되시기 바랍니다.
