God’s Grace Has Called Me At Noon (5pm) To Be a Day Worker
Through the parable of the vineyard, God shows us His love and fervor of salvation by extending the hand of salvation to us, who are like the workers lost in the world. The vineyard landowner in the scripture represents God. The vineyard symbolizes Israel in the Old Testament, and the church, which was bought through His blood, in the New Testament. The marketplace symbolizes the world, and the workers symbolize the saints that were chosen ages ago and that are called upon by God and received salvation.
The parable shown in today’s scripture shows us an urgent scenario in which all the grapes in the vineyard must be harvested before the rain season, and it contains God’s earnest will to complete the harvest of salvation before the end times.
I. The Endeavor of the Owner to Go Out Early in the Morning to Hire Day Workers
When we look at the phrase in verse one, “early in the morning”, in the original language, it means “before the sun rises”. Through this, we can sense that the owner was very desperate and urgent to find a worker. Because the grapes must be harvested before the rainy season hits, the owner went out to the marketplace early in the morning, before sunrise, to find some workers. This is showing us God’s endeavor of love for us.
God’s endeavor to save me! If we have been called through that grace, we must take after the owner’s ardency and bear fruits of working diligently early in the morning. The greatest duty in the life of faith is ‘prayer’. We can pray for our families, children, businesses, jobs, but there must be the zeal of calling out to God early in the morning, following after the owner’s zeal and diligence.
Believing in God is also a great work. Reading the bible and evangelizing cannot be ignored, and are also great works. Mark 9:23 states, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” Through the love and grace of God who went out early in the morning to save us, and by praying fervently and doing the work of the LORD, we, who were last, will receive the blessing of being first. In today’s scripture, we see that the last ones were paid first, even though the ones that came to work first should be paid first. The attitude of the workers that came in late at 5pm, working as hard as they can in thankfulness of the owner’s grace, is the key to going from last to first.
II. The Heart of the Owner that is Searching for the Day Worker
Salvation is finding someone that was lost. As such, the owner searching for a worker from early in the morning to 5pm shows us God’s fervor to save a lost soul. Matt 9:13 states that Jesus came to find the lost. In Luke 19:10, Jesus says to Zacchaeus, “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” The three parables in Luke 15 show God’s such qualities. The owner’s endeavor to find the one lost sheep out of the 100, the 10 drachmas, and the parable of the lost son show that God’s will is to find and save the lost one. The owner did not let up even while nearing the end of the day’s work time, 5pm, which can be seen as the point of the end times in history.
The only thing in the owner’s sights was the worker. God’s passion, looking for a worker all day long with the thought of “there must be a worker at some marketplace”! And here, we can discover the love of God, that approaches us as a ‘sinful friend’. Furthermore, He sent His only Son, who died to save us.
God, who once cried out “where are you Adam”, is currently going through different marketplaces to find me. Therefore, we have to understand the heart of the owner, who is going around searching for a worker. He did not send someone else to search; he went out to search himself. No matter how sinful and lacking we are, God will come to us in the shape of the vineyard owner. He will find us and reveal Himself through the Word, grace, and love.
III. Endeavor in Evangelism with the Heart of the Vineyard Owner
Looking at the scripture, the owner picked out workers from the marketplace and sent him to the vineyard. And so many workers were sent to the vineyard throughout the day, from morning to 5pm. The vineyard symbolizes the church, this symbolizes the fruit of evangelism. To evangelize, the owner went out to the marketplace, met different people and chose them as workers. People that were just lingering around in the marketplace are people that are invaluable, have no purpose or goals in life. But instead of just letting them be, he diligently looked for them and sent them to the vineyard. Likewise, we must go out into the marketplace, that is the world, and find and guide those who can do God’s work to the church that is the vineyard. This is why we have been called by the lord at noon, or at 5pm.
Conclusion
The owner told the workers to go “work at the vineyard”. Here, “work” is actually referring to believing in Jesus. John 6:27-29 says that the core task of doing God’s work is to believe in the one that has sent us. Hope is that we would be saints that work diligently in thanksgiving of the grace for calling us and that we would bear the fruits of faith.
하나님의 은혜가 11시(오후 5시)에 품꾼으로 나를 부르셨다
포도원 비유를 통해서, 하나님은 세상 낙오자 된 품꾼과 같은 나를 향해 구원의 손길을 내미시는 사랑과 구원의 열정을 나타내 주시고 있습니다. 본문의 포도원 주인은 하나님 자신을 가리키고 있습니다. 포도원은 구약의 이스라엘을, 신약에서는 당신의 피로 값 주고 사신 교회를 뜻합니다. 그리고 장터는 세상을 가리키며, 초청받은 품꾼은 만세 전에 예정된 성도들로서 하나님의 부르심을 받고 구원 얻은 성도를 가리킵니다.
오늘 본문에 나오는 비유는 포도원 수확을 앞두고 우기(雨期)가 닥쳐오기 전에 포도 수확을 해야 하는 긴박한 상황을 염두에 둔 것으로, 임박한 종말이 도래하기 전에 영혼 구원의 수확을 마치려는 하나님의 간절한 뜻이 담겨 있습니다.
1. 이른 아침부터 품꾼을 구하러 나간 주인의 열심
본문 1절에 ‘이른 아침’이란 말은 원어로 볼 때 ‘해 뜨기 전에’라는 뜻입니다. 이를 볼 때 품꾼을 구하러 나가는 주인의 심정이 매우 급하고 긴박함을 알 수 있습니다. 우기가 닥치기 전에 포도 수확을 마치지 않으면 안 되기에, 주인은 이른 아침부터, 아직 해가 뜨지 않은 캄캄한 새벽부터 장터에 일꾼들을 구하러 다니고 있는 것입니다. 이는 바로 우리를 향한 하나님의 사랑의 열심을 나타내 주고 있습니다.
나를 구원하시기 위한 하나님의 열심! 우리가 그 은혜로 부르심을 입었다면 주인의 열심을 본받아 이른 아침부터 힘써 일하는 충성의 열매가 있어야만 하겠습니다. 신앙생활에 있어서 가장 큰 일은 ‘기도’입니다. 가족과 자녀를 위해, 사업과 맡은 직분을 위해 기도하되, 우리를 부르신 주인의 열심과 부지런을 본받아 이른 아침부터 힘써 부르짖는 열심이 있어야 합니다.
하나님을 믿는 것도 큰일입니다. 성경 보는 것, 전도하는 것, 위대한 일이 아닐 수 없습니다. 막 9:23 말씀에 ‘믿는 자에게는 능치 못한 일이 없다’고 하셨습니다. 우리를 사랑하사 이른 아침부터 나와서 구원해 주신 하나님의 사랑과 은혜를 힘입어, 간절히 기도하며 주의 일에 힘쓸 때, 나중 된 자이지만 먼저 된 자의 축복을 받게 되는 것입니다. 오늘 본문에서, 먼저 와서 일한 사람부터 계산해야 할 텐데 제일 나중에 들어온 사람부터 계산해 주고 있음을 볼 수 있습니다. 오후 5시에, 늦게 들어온 품꾼으로서 주인의 은혜에 감사 감격하여 그야말로 물불을 가리지 않고 충성 다하는 그 열심과 자세야말로 나중 된 자로서 먼저 되는 은총의 비결입니다.
2. 품꾼을 찾아 헤매는 주인의 심정
구원은 잃어버린 자를 찾는 것입니다. 마찬가지로, 주인이 이른 아침부터 오후 5시까지 품꾼을 찾아 헤매는 것은 바로 잃어버린 영혼을 구원하시고자 하는 하나님의 열정을 보여 주고 있습니다. 마 9:13에서 예수님은 잃어버린 자를 찾으러 왔다고 하셨습니다. 눅 19:10에서도 예수님은 삭개오를 향해 ‘나는 잃어버린 자를 찾아 구원하려 함이라’고 하셨습니다. 이러한 하나님의 속성을 잘 드러내 주는 비유가 눅 15장의 세 가지 비유에 잘 나타나 있습니다. 양 100마리 가운데 잃은 양 하나를 찾으시는 주인의 열심, 열 드라크마와 돌아온 탕자의 비유를 통해 하나님의 목적은 잃은 자를 찾아 구원하는 것임을 잘 말해 주고 있습니다. 그러한 주인의 열심은 하루의 일과가 끝나가는 오후 5시, 즉 역사의 종말의 시점에도 절대 식지 않았습니다.
포도원 주인의 눈에는 오직 품꾼만 보였습니다. “어느 장터로 가면 일꾼이 있겠지” 하시며 온종일 품꾼을 찾으시는 하나님의 열정! 바로 여기서 우리는 ‘죄인의 친구’로서 나에게 직접 다가와 주시는 하나님의 사랑을 발견할 수 있습니다. 나아가, 당신의 외아들을 보내 죽이기까지 하시면서 나를 건져 주셨습니다.
‘아담아 네가 어디 있느냐’ 하셨던 그 하나님께서 지금 이 시각에도 나를 찾기 위해 이 장터, 저 장터를 다니고 계십니다. 그러므로 우리는 품꾼을 찾아 헤매시는 주인의 심정을 헤아려야 합니다. 남을 시키지 않고 자신이 직접 나섰습니다. 내가 아무리 죄를 짓고, 부족하다 해도 하나님은 포도원 주인 모양으로 나를 찾아옵니다. 찾아오셔서 말씀으로, 은혜로, 사랑으로 당신을 계시해 주셨습니다.
3. 포도원 주인의 심정으로 전도에 힘쓰라
본문에 보면, 포도원 주인은 열심히 장터에 가서 쓸 만한 일꾼을 고른 후 포도원으로 보냈습니다. 그리하여 많은 일꾼이 오전부터, 제일 늦게는 오후 5시까지 포도원에 들어갔습니다. 포도원은 오늘날 신령한 교회를 말한다면 이는 전도의 열매를 뜻합니다. 전도를 위해 주인은 부지런히 ‘장터’에 나가서 사람들을 만나고 골랐습니다. 장터에 놀고 있는 사람이란 한 푼의 가치 없는 존재들, 인생의 존재나 의미, 목적의식을 상실하고 살아가는 사람들을 말합니다. 그러나 그들을 버려두지 않으시고 열심히 찾아서 포도원으로 들여보내셨다면, 우리도 세상 장터에 나가 하나님의 뜻을 위해 일할 수 있는 품꾼을 찾아 교회라는 포도원으로 인도해야 합니다. 이를 위해 우리는 제11시, 오후 5시에 주인의 사랑의 부르심을 받았습니다.
결론
품꾼을 부르신 주인은 그들에게 ‘포도원에 가서 일하라’고 하였습니다. 여기서 ‘일하라’는 것의 실체는 바로 예수를 믿는 것입니다. 요 6:27-29 말씀을 볼 때, 하나님의 일의 핵심은 바로 보내신 자를 믿는 것이기 때문입니다. 불러 주신 은혜에 감사 감격하며 열심히 믿음으로, 각자 원하시는 모양대로 아름다운 신앙의 열매를 맺는 성도님들이 되시기 바랍니다.
