How Will God Who has Chosen Me Utilize Me?
We know that God’s redemptive ministry was not fulfilled suddenly, but it was fulfilled while it was preplanned and predestined. Like how we plan everything beforehand and execute one by one as we had formulated in our head, God works through the Holy Son Jesus and the Holy Spirit to fulfill the kind work of redemption as He planned beforehand. As you can see, the reason that God called us through His predestination and preselection is to redeem us, to make us His children, and to give us the duties and responsibilities.
I. God ‘chose’ us.
A word “selection” contains the meaning of having to “choose carefully or to discard the inferior ones and keep the superior one.” This is what God had done when He chose us. There is a great difference between those who are aware of this fact and believe in Jesus and those who are not. Those who understand this fact will not be in despair when they are faced with any hardships and trials. “What am I that God carefully chose and hand selected a person like me who is full of wickedness, jealousy, and envy?” All this was fulfilled within God’s Will. Because God predestined and selected an individual and a nation with His Will, we were selected with His grace. No matter which duty you were called on, whether it is being a deacon, an elder, an evangelist or a pastor, it was not done with your will, but He “chose” you with His absolute Will. Isn’t that why it is clearly written in Jn 15:16, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you”? The Apostle Paul also said, “So too, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace.”
II. God “predestined” us before time began.
A word “predestination” means to be “decided beforehand.” This denotes that God has decided for our various roles and responsibilities beforehand in accordance with His Will and desires. It is recorded in Acts 2:23, “This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge.” We can see that the selection of each individual believers is not done out of coincidence but done as a result of God’s predestination. Such predestination of God is also fulfilled through His Sovereignty. We were not selected because of our connections with acquaintances, alumni or regionalism. It is only through God’s Sovereignty! (Rom 9:15-23). Moreover, God’s selection is an event that happened through His “foreknowledge.” It is written in Rom 8:29, “For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son.” God is introduced in Gal 1:15 as, “He who set me apart from my mother’s womb and called me by his grace.” Moreover, God’s predestination is fulfilled within Christ. Doesn’t today’s Scripture text clearly say “He chose us in him before the creation of the world” (Eph 1:4)? This verse clearly shows that God’s predestination was already fulfilled before the ‘Creation of the world’ and at the same time, it was fulfilled within Christ. Lastly, God’s predestination was fulfilled through God’s ‘grace.’ Like it is written in 2Tim 1:9, it was fulfilled as “He has saved us and called us to a holy life… because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time.”
III. God “hand-selected” us.
A word “Hand-select” means “carefully chosen and picked.” Like the Apostle Paul, we the believers were chosen from the womb (Gal 1:15). If so, who chose us? The Bible said that it was Christ, God and His grace that chose us. Christ’s selection was clearly testified in Jn 15:16, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you.” Moreover, it is written in Rom 8:33, “those whom God has chosen,” and in Rom 11:5 as “There is a remnant chosen by grace.” What are the reasons that God chose us? First, it was to save us from wickedness (2Thes 2:13). Second, it was to make us His children (Eph 1:5). Third, it was to conform us to the image of His Son, Jesus (Rom 8:29). Fourth, it was to shame the strong and to nullify the things that are (1Cor 1:27-28). Fifth, it was to make us holy and blameless (Eph 1:4) so that He can make us His Apostles (Tit 1:1). Sixth, it was to make us rich in faith (Jam 2:5) and royal princes and priests (1Pet 2:9). Lastly, it was to make us do good work (Eph 2:10) and for His everlasting glory (Rom 9:23). When we understand His mercy and grace for selecting us, we will not be swayed no matter what type of tribulation, drought and danger may come upon us. A trial cannot occur to those who are predestined by God.
Conclusion
God’s callings are irrevocable (Rom 11:29). It is because God sees the outcome, not beginning or the middle. It is because He carefully makes His selection after He sees the outcome and deeply thinks about it from the very beginning. If God preplans and prepares in advance to use a colt, then there cannot be insufficiencies or regrets in His selection of us, whom He has chosen with clear purpose and responsibilities. I would like all of us to believe that there cannot be disappointments or trials occurring in us when we realize this fact.
나를 선택하신 하나님이 나를 어떻게 쓸 것인가?
하나님의 구원 사역은 갑자기 이루어지는 것이 아니라, 미리 계획하시고 작정하신 가운데 이루어짐을 알 수 있습니다. 사람이 무슨 일을 하든지 미리 계획을 세우고 머리로 구상을 하는 가운데 하나하나 실행해 나가듯, 하나님께서도 성자 예수님과 성령님을 배후로 역사하게 하셔서 미리 계획하신 대로 구원의 선한 사업을 이루십니다. 이처럼 하나님의 예정과 택정 속에서 우리를 부르신 이유는 우리를 구원하시고, 하나님의 자녀 삼으시고, 사명을 주시기 위함입니다.
1. 하나님께서 우리를 ‘선택’하셨습니다.
선택이라는 말은 ‘골라서 뽑는다’, ‘나쁜 것을 버리고 좋은 것을 취한다’는 뜻을 포함하고 있습니다. 하나님께서 우리를 선택하시되 이렇게 하셨다는 것입니다. 이러한 사실을 알고 예수 믿는 사람과 그렇지 않은 사람과는 하늘과 땅 차이입니다. 이를 깨달은 사람은 어떠한 시험과 어려움이 올지라도 절대 낙심하지 않습니다. “나 같은 존재가 뭔데, 악하고 시기·질투 많은 나를 하나님 안에서 고르고 뽑아서 선택하셨을까?”
이 모든 것이 다 하나님의 뜻 가운데 이루어진 것입니다. 하나님께서 자기 뜻대로 개인이나 민족을 예정하시고 택하셨기 때문에, 하나님의 은혜로 우리는 선택된 것입니다. 내가 집사나 장로, 전도사, 목사 등 어떠한 직분으로 부르심을 받았든지 그것은 내 의사대로 된 것이 아니라, 하나님께서 절대적인 당신의 뜻 가운데 우리를 ‘선택’하신 것입니다. 그래서 요 15:16 말씀을 보면 “너희가 나를 택한 것이 아니요 내가 너희를 택하여 세웠나니”라고 분명히 기록하고 있지 않습니까? 사도 바울도 “그런즉 이와 같이 이제도 은혜로 택하심을 따라 남은 자가 있느니라”라고 말씀하였습니다.
2. 하나님께서 우리를 만세 전에‘예정’하셨습니다.
‘예정’이란 말은 어떠한 일에 앞서서 작정한다는 뜻입니다. 하나님의 뜻대로, 당신의 기뻐하시는 뜻을 따라서 우리를 여러 가지 직분과 사명으로 예정하셨다는 뜻입니다. 행 2:23을 보면 “그가 하나님의 정하신 뜻과 미리 아신 대로 내어 준 바 되었거늘”이라고 기록된 말씀을 발견할 수 있습니다. 성도 한 사람의 선택, 그것은 결코 우연이 아니라 이처럼 하나님께서 미리 정하시고 작정하신 결과였음을 알 수 있습니다.
이러한 하나님의 예정은 동시에 하나님의 주권에 의해서 이루어진 것입니다. 선후배나 학연, 지연에 의해 선택된 것이 아닙니다. 오직 하나님의 주권!(롬 9:15-23). 또한, 하나님의 선택은 ‘미리 아신 바 된’ 사건입니다. 롬 8:29에 “하나님이 미리 아신 자들로 또한 그 아들의 형상을 본받게 하기 위하여 미리 정하셨으니”라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 갈 1:15에서도 “내 어머니의 태로부터 나를 택정하시고 은혜로 나를 부르신 이”라고 하나님을 소개하고 있습니다.
또한, 하나님의 예정은 ‘그리스도 안에서’ 이루어진 것입니다. 오늘 본문에도 분명히 “곧 창세전에 그리스도 안에서 우리를 택하사”(엡 1:4)라고 말씀하고 있지 않습니까? 하나님의 예정은 이미 창세전에 이루어졌으며, 동시에 그리스도 안에서 이루어졌음을 알려 주는 말씀입니다.
끝으로, 하나님의 예정은 하나님의 ‘은혜’로 이루어졌습니다. 딤후 1:9 말씀과 같이 “하나님이 우리를 구원하사 거룩한 부르심으로 부름은 오직 자기 뜻과 영원한 때 전부터 그리스도 예수 안에서 우리에게 주신 은혜대로” 이루어진 것입니다
3. 하나님께서 우리를 ‘택정’하셨습니다.
‘택정’이란 말은 ‘가려서 뽑아 정한다’는 뜻입니다. 우리 성도는 사도 바울같이 복중에서 택함을 받았습니다(갈 1:15). 그러면, 우리를 누가 택하셨습니까? 성경은 그리스도와 하나님, 은혜께서 우리를 택하셨다고 말씀하고 있습니다. 요 15:16 말씀을 보면, “너희가 나를 택한 것이 아니요 내가 너희를 택하”였다고 그리스도의 선택을 분명히 증거하고 있습니다. 또한, 롬 8:33은 ‘하나님의 택하신 자들’, 롬 11:5은 ‘은혜로 택하심을 따라 남은 자가 있느니라’고 말씀하고 있습니다.
하나님께서 우리를 택하신 이유는 무엇일까요? 첫째는, 우리를 죄악에서 구원시키기 위해서입니다(살후 2:13). 둘째는, 하나님의 자녀로 삼기 위해서입니다(엡 1:5). 셋째는, 예수를 본받게 하기 위해서(롬 8:29), 넷째는, 강한 것들을 부끄럽게 하고 있는 것들을 폐하시려고 택하셨습니다(고전 1:27-28). 다섯째는, 흠이 없이 거룩하게 하셔서(엡 1:4) 우리를 사도로 삼으시기 위해 택정하셨습니다(딛 1:1). 여섯째는, 우리를 믿음에 부요한 자요(약 2:5), 왕과 제사장으로 삼기 위해서입니다(벧전 2:9). 끝으로, 선한 일에 힘쓰고(엡 2:10) 영원한 영광을 위해서 택정하셨습니다(롬 9:23).
이처럼 하나님의 택정의 은총을 깨달을 때, 어떠한 환난이나 기근이나 위험이 몰아닥쳐도 절대 흔들림이 없습니다. 하나님의 예정을 입은 사람에게는 시험이 올 수가 없습니다.
결론
하나님의 부르심에는 후회가 없습니다(롬 11:29). 하나님은 시작과 중간을 보시는 것이 아니라 끝을 보시기 때문입니다. 끝을 보시고 처음부터 깊이 생각하시는 가운데 택정하시는 하나님이기 때문입니다. 나귀 새끼 하나를 쓰시기 위해서도 미리 계획하시고 준비하시는 하나님이라면, 나를 향한 분명한 목적과 사명을 가지고 선택하신 하나님의 선택에는 결코 후회하심이나 모자람이 있을 수 없습니다. 이를 깨달을 때 성도에겐 결코 낙심이나 시험이 있을 수 없다는 것을 믿으시기 바랍니다.
