The Witnesses of the True Gospel Save the Nation
The witnesses of the gospel are neither a theorist nor a visionary. They are the people who only
comprehend and believe the incidents of the cross and the resurrection of Jesus Christ as they are
and testify to others. Thus, a true witness of Jesus Christ must preach the words of the Bible as
they are, risking his own life and to the point of shedding his blood. Although the processes of
testifying for the gospel may be accompanied by tearful afflictions and sufferings, this in turn
will become a great force that saves a nation and people.
I. The Authority of the Word is the Power that saves the nation.
If there is a true patriot in the history of mankind, there is no one that supersedes Jesus. The
patriots only loved their nation, but Jesus loved all mankind. It is because Jesus is the one who
tearfully prayed for and loved all mankind. Hence, the secret to truly revive a nation and its
people lies in the gospel of Jesus Christ. When the disciples asked about the “time to restore the
kingdom to Israel” in today’s Scripture text, Acts 1:6, Jesus replied, “the times or dates are set by
the Father,” and urged them to be his “witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and
to the ends of the earth.” This denotes that although we may not know when the Kingdom of
God be restored, it will be restored when we become the witnesses of the gospel and proclaim it
to the ends of the earth. This enables us to realize that the pathway of national restoration and
deliverance be open to us when we receive the authority of the Holy Spirit and testify Jesus who
is the True Gospel. The Romans during that time thought that they could “rule the world and
maintain peace in the world if they have strong military power,” but Jesus spoke about
establishing a new nation that reaches the ends of the earth solely by the authority of the Holy
Spirit. That nation is the Kingdom of Heaven and the nation for the entire world. That nation is
not a shallow nation but a nation that unites entire mankind. The power to establish that nation is
in the Word of God. It was the Word of God that raised a dead Lazarus and revived a son of a
widow of the City of Nain who was being carried to his grave. Likewise, the power to save a
nation is not on its political power, economic power or military power, but only on the power of
the Holy Spirit. It is in the authority in the Word of God. Thus ,a true witness of the gospel must
testify even to the point of shedding his blood.
II. We cannot let gospel slumber.
Only way to save our nation and people is on the gospel of Jesus Christ. We will live when we
accept this gospel but will die if we reject it. That is why the witnesses of gospel will save the
people, individuals, nation, and church. Because he realized this, the Apostle Paul said in 1Cor
9:16, “Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!” From this text, we can indeed comprehend the
Apostle Paul’s burning heart to spread the gospel, to the point of risking his life. Likewise, we
realize through the Bible that the way for the nation to survive is on obeying the Will of God. On
the Mount of Olives, when Jesus was looking at Jerusalem while he was shedding tears, he
revealed the heart of God that desired to embrace Jerusalem and the people of Israel like a hen
gathers her chicks under her wings. However, the Israelites who consistently rejected God’s plea
were tragically destroyed by General Titus of Roman Empire in 70 A.D., and encountered a
massacre where 1 million people were brutally slain. If they listened to the Word of Jesus, then
the wrath would have been changed to blessing. The nation that fails to pray will collapse. The
Prophet Samuel confessed in 1Sam 12:23 that he did not “sin against the Lord by failing to
pray.” The life of Jesus also started with prayer and ended with prayer. Even to this date, Jesus is
praying for us on the right-hand side of the throne of heaven. Prayer indeed has a power to save
mankind and the land. It is clearly stated in 2Chr 7:13-14 that when we pray, God “will hear
from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” Eutychus who fell from the 3 rd
story and died while listening to the Word was revived by prayer. Thus, what is the most
frightening curse? It is telling us not to “pray.” That is what was told to Jeremiah (Jer 7:16). The
reason that our nation is so prosperous today is all because of prayer. It is all because there were
many believers who shed tears and prayed every dawn, on the mountains and in the fields. It is
because there was a foundation of faith built on the martyrdom and patriotic acts of our
forefathers of faith who believed Jesus before us.
III. The way for the people to survive is to recover conscience within the Holy Spirit.
When we look at Rom 9:1-3, we see the Apostle Paul speaking the voice of conscience by
saying, “For I could wish that I myself were cursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my
people, those of my own race.” Thus, only way for a nation and the people to survive is on
reviving the conscience. If conscience of the people is dead, then there is no hope for such
nation. If the food supply is scarce, we can import from other countries; if we lack technologies,
we can learn; and if we need more funds, we can take out a loan. However, we cannot borrow or
loan conscience from others. It says in Prov 4:23, “Above all else, guard your heart, for
everything you do flows from it.” Thus, conscience is the life for individuals, people and nation.
The life of the church is also conscience. Reviving and recovering this conscience indeed is the
way to recover and revive the nation and the people.
Conclusion
It is said that only the “righteous” will live by the faith. The biggest problem in
current time is the absence of conscience and the fall of the ethics (Jer 17:9-10). I would like all
of you to become true patriots to recover the conscience of this people through the evidence in
true gospel and save this people by testifying for the life of Christ.
복음, 고난과 환난들을 통하여 하나님 나라에
오늘 시편 기자는 시 119:133에서 “나의 행보를 주의 말씀에 굳게 세우시고 아무 죄악이 나를 주장치 못하게 하소서”라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 아무리 힘들고 어려운 고난이 온다 해도 하나님 앞에 바로 살려고 애쓰는 시편 기자의 곧은 인생관, 신앙관이 배어 있는 말씀입니다. 우리에게도 많은 고난과 환난이 있습니다. 그 고난을 통해서 하나님은 우리를 더욱 강하게 하시고 연단하시고자 하십니다. 그러므로 이를 깨닫지 못할 때는 원망할 수밖에 없지만, 깨닫고 나면 이와 같은 고난과 환난들이 주는 유익에 감사할 뿐입니다.
1. 고난은 우리에게 유익을 가져다줍니다.
신 32장에 보면, 하나님께서 당신의 백성을 인도하시고 훈련하시는 것을 독수리가 그 새끼를 훈련하는 것에 비유하고 있습니다(신 32:11-12). 잘 알다시피 독수리는 새끼를 훈련할 때 높은 창공에 올라가서 인정사정없이 내던집니다. 죽지 않기 위해 기를 쓰고 날갯짓을 하는 새끼 독수리를, 땅에 떨어지기 직전에 어미가 받아 줍니다. 그리고 다시 올라가서 내던지기를 반복하는 가운데 자연스럽게 독수리에게 나는 법을 가르쳐 준다는 것입니다. 사람도 마찬가지입니다. 고난을 겪어 보지 않고는 인생살이에 결코 성공할 수 없습니다. 태풍이 와서 바다를 다 뒤집어 놓아야 바다도 숨을 쉬고 정화가 됩니다. 물론 이러한 자연재해로 큰 피해를 입게 됩니다. 하지만 작은 손실로 말미암아 큰 이득을 안겨 주는 것입니다.
다니엘과 그의 세 친구의 경우를 통해서도 알 수 있습니다. 평소보다 7배나 뜨거운 풀무 불에 들어갔지만, 머리털 하나 상하지 않는 은혜를 체험했습니다. 그들이 이러한 고난과 역경을 당하지 않았다면 하나님을 믿었겠습니까? 그러므로 사람은 고난을 통해서 강해집니다. 고통을 당해 보아야 남의 고통에 대해서도 이해할 수 있고 동정할 수 있습니다. 시험당한 뒤에 깊이 묵상해 보시기 바랍니다. 모든 시험과 고통과 환난이 은혜였음을 깨닫게 될 것입니다.
고전 10:13에서 사도 바울은 “사람이 감당할 시험 밖에는 너희에게 당할 것이 없다”라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 그러므로 어떤 고난과 역경이 온다 해도, 이 모든 것을 하나님께 맡길 때 고난을 쉽게 극복할 수 있고, 고난을 통해서 주시는 하나님의 유익을 체험할 수 있습니다.
2. 고난을 당한 자가 하나님의 위로를 받고, 남을 위로할 수 있습니다.
어려움을 당한 사람만이 어려움에 처해 있는 사람에게 위로의 말을 건넬 수 있습니다. 그래서 자수성가한 사람들의 공통점은 그들 모두가 눈물겨운 고통을 경험했다는 것입니다. 오늘날 성공하는 사람들은 하나같이 어려운 환경 속에서 성공이라는 열매를 거둔 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 영웅이란 평화 시가 아니라 난세에 탄생하는 것도 같은 이치입니다. 전쟁의 와중에, 나라가 망하기 직전에, 극한 환난과 어려움을 당할 때 영웅이 만들어지는 것입니다. 그래서 옛 어른들은 “젊어서 고생은 사서도 한다”라는 말을 하였던 것입니다. 이를 깨달은 시편 기자는 “고난 당한 것이 내게 유익이라 이로 인하여 내가 주의 율례를 배우게 되었나이다”(시 119:71)라고 감사의 고백을 올리고 있지 않습니까?
그러므로 믿는 성도는 하나님의 말씀으로 위로를 받아 고난 당한 사람들에게 위로가 되어 주고, 동반자와 친구가 되어 줘야 합니다. 정초에 쓰디쓴 고들빼기를 캐서 아이들에게 먹이는 풍습도, 앞으로 살아갈 험난한 세상을 이기도록 미리 훈련하는 의미가 담겨 있습니다. 쓰다고 해서 뱉지 말고 이기고 삼켜야 하는 것처럼, 고들빼기처럼 쓴 인생살이에서도 아무리 힘들고 어려운 고난이 온다 할지라도 도망가지 말고 맞서 싸워 이겨야 함을 말해 주고 있지 않습니까?
3. 고난을 통해 하나님께 더욱 가까이 나아가게 됩니다.
고난은 아픔과 답답함과 외로움을 수반하여 옵니다. 그러나 그러한 과정에서 오히려 지혜를 터득하게 되고, 하나님을 찾고, 더 가까이 나아갈 수가 있습니다. 베토벤의 경우를 보십시오. 음악가로서 가장 치명적인 귀머거리의 상태까지 내려가게 됐으나, 오히려 그는 가장 위대한 곡을 탄생시키는 창조자가 되었습니다. 가장 절망적인 순간에 “귀머거리의 괴로움을 통해 네가 세계적인 큰 지도자가 될 수 있다”라는 하나님의 음성을 듣고 좌절하지 않고 더욱 노력한 결과로 가장 위대한 작품을 쓸 수 있었던 것입니다. 헨델도 그의 불후의 명작 ‘메시아’를 쓰기 위해 꼬박 24일간을 식음을 전폐하면서 작곡을 했다고 합니다. 모두가 남이 알지 못하는 눈물, 남이 겪어 보지 못한 번뇌와 고통을 이겨내는 가운데 맺은 결실이 아닙니까?
성도 여러분! 앞으로 이 땅에 절대 폭풍이 없어지지 않습니다. 블레셋 장수 골리앗 같은 태풍이 우리 앞에 닥칩니다. 우리 삶의 현장에 나타납니다. 그럴수록 믿음이 강해지면서 하나님만 의지하고 기도하면서 이겨 나가시기 바랍니다. 모든 것이 하나님의 섭리인 줄 알고, 우리 시대가 하나님의 수중에 있다는 것이 믿어진다면, 편안한 마음으로 모든 환난을 겪는 가운데 감사하시는 성도님들이 되시기 바랍니다.
결론
사도 바울은 살 소망까지 끊어질 정도로 극심한 환난 가운데서도(고후 1:8-9) 자기를 의지하지 않고, 죽은 자를 살리시는 하나님만 의뢰함으로써 승리의 개가를 부를 수 있었습니다. 힘들고 어려울수록 하나님께 가까이 나아가시기 바랍니다. 끝까지 함께하시는 하나님의 약속을 믿으시고 용기백배하여, 넘어지지 말고 목표를 향해 걸어가시는 성도님들이 되시기 바라겠습니다..
