To the Kingdom of God Through Gospel, Adversities, and Afflictions
The Psalmist is telling us today in Ps 119:133, “Direct my footsteps according to your word; Let no sin rule over me.” This shows the Psalmist’s firm outlook on life and faith that he strives to live properly before God no matter how difficult and severe adversities he may encounter. There may be a great deal of hardship and persecution that are coming our way. Through those hardships, God wants to strengthen and reinforce us. Thus, we do nothing but grumble when we do not understand this; but we are only grateful for the benefit that these adversities and afflictions give us once we realize it.
I. The adversities bring us advantages
Deut 32 compares the processes of how God led His people and trained them as how an eagle hovered over her young (Deut 32:11-12). As you are well aware, when an eagle trains her young, she flies high up in the sky and drops her young without mercy. Moments before it plummets to the ground, she scoops her young that flutters its wings frantically to survive and flies up again. Then she repeats this process to naturally teach her young how to fly. It is likewise with humans. One can never succeed in life without experiencing adversities. When the typhoon strikes and stirs up the sea, it then gets loosen up to respire and be purified. It is true that one will experience a great loss through these natural disasters. However, one receives a great benefit through a small loss. We see this from the case of Daniel and his 3 friends. Although they were thrown into the furnace 7 times hotter than usual, they received grace that not even a single strand of hair was harmed. Would they have believed in God if they had not suffered these afflictions and adversities? Hence, people become stronger through hardships. When you suffer the pain, you will be able to understand others’ pain and be merciful to others. I would like you to deeply ponder after you were tested. You will be able to realize that all these tribulations, suffering and adversities were grace. The Apostle Paul said in 1Cor 10:13, “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind.” Hence, you can easily overcome these afflictions and adversities and experience God’s guidance when you entrust all these unto Him.
II. Those who have suffered will be consoled by God and will in turn be able to comfort others.
Only those who are grieve-stricken can speak the words of comfort to others who are grieve-stricken. What is common in self-successful people is that they all have experienced tearful pain. We can see from every successful person in today’s society that all reaped fruit called “success” through difficult situations. It is similar to how heroes are born during difficult times and not during peaceful times. The heroes are born in times like war, the moments before a nation to crumble and in extreme persecution and difficulties. That is why our ancestors have said, “It does a young man good to suffer some privations in the world.” When the Psalmist realized this, didn’t he speak a confession of thanks in Ps 119:71, “It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees”? Therefore, we the believers must be comforted by the Word of God so that we become the comforter for those who have suffered as well as their companions and acquaintances. The custom in which we dig a head of Korean bitter lettuce (Crepidiastrum sonchifolium Max) in early January and feed it to the children contains the meaning of training them to endure and overcome any hardships that they will face from the world. Does it not tell you that no matter how severely you are afflicted in this world, you must not flee from the bitterness of the world but confront it, fight against it, and overcome it just like how you were not to spit out a piece of Korean bitter lettuce but bear and swallow it?
III. We can come nearer to God through these afflictions.
The adversities accompany pain, heartache and loneliness. However, we can acquire wisdom instead and seek God to come nearer to Him through these processes. Look at the case of Beethoven. He was lowered to a point of being deaf which is fatal loss for a musician; but he became a great creator that composed the greatest masterpiece. At the very moment of despair, he heard the voice of God telling him, “Through the pain of becoming deaf, you can become the world’s renown composer,” so he was not saddened by this but put in more efforts which enabled him to compose the greatest masterpiece of the world. Handel too fasted for 24 days without food or water to compose his immortal masterpiece called “The Messiah.” Aren’t they the fruits which are the result of overcoming the anguish and pain that others have not experienced and the tears that others are unaware of? My beloved saints! The turbulent storms of this world will never perish. The turbulent storm like the Philistine warrior Goliath will come before us. It will appear in our lives. When that happens, I sincerely hope that we will be able to overcome it with stronger faith as we rely only on God and pray. If we realize that all of this is God’s Divine Administration and our times are in His hands, I would like all of us to endure these adversities with ease and be thankful.
Conclusion
The Apostle Paul did not rely on himself during the extreme adversities where his life was in danger and hopeless (2Cor 1:8-9) but relied only on God who raised the dead; so, he was able to sing great anthem of victory. I strongly urge you to come nearer to God as your life becomes difficult and troublesome. I sincerely hope that all of you will believe the promise of God that He will stay with you until the end so that you become more and more courageous and strong so you will not stumble but stride toward your goal.
복음, 고난과 환난들을 통하여 하나님 나라에
오늘 시편 기자는 시 119:133에서 “나의 행보를 주의 말씀에 굳게 세우시고 아무 죄악이 나를 주장치 못하게 하소서”라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 아무리 힘들고 어려운 고난이 온다 해도 하나님 앞에 바로 살려고 애쓰는 시편 기자의 곧은 인생관, 신앙관이 배어 있는 말씀입니다. 우리에게도 많은 고난과 환난이 있습니다. 그 고난을 통해서 하나님은 우리를 더욱 강하게 하시고 연단하시고자 하십니다. 그러므로 이를 깨닫지 못할 때는 원망할 수밖에 없지만, 깨닫고 나면 이와 같은 고난과 환난들이 주는 유익에 감사할 뿐입니다.
1. 고난은 우리에게 유익을 가져다줍니다.
신 32장에 보면, 하나님께서 당신의 백성을 인도하시고 훈련하시는 것을 독수리가 그 새끼를 훈련하는 것에 비유하고 있습니다(신 32:11-12). 잘 알다시피 독수리는 새끼를 훈련할 때 높은 창공에 올라가서 인정사정없이 내던집니다. 죽지 않기 위해 기를 쓰고 날갯짓을 하는 새끼 독수리를, 땅에 떨어지기 직전에 어미가 받아 줍니다. 그리고 다시 올라가서 내던지기를 반복하는 가운데 자연스럽게 독수리에게 나는 법을 가르쳐 준다는 것입니다. 사람도 마찬가지입니다. 고난을 겪어 보지 않고는 인생살이에 결코 성공할 수 없습니다. 태풍이 와서 바다를 다 뒤집어 놓아야 바다도 숨을 쉬고 정화가 됩니다. 물론 이러한 자연재해로 큰 피해를 입게 됩니다. 하지만 작은 손실로 말미암아 큰 이득을 안겨 주는 것입니다.
다니엘과 그의 세 친구의 경우를 통해서도 알 수 있습니다. 평소보다 7배나 뜨거운 풀무 불에 들어갔지만, 머리털 하나 상하지 않는 은혜를 체험했습니다. 그들이 이러한 고난과 역경을 당하지 않았다면 하나님을 믿었겠습니까? 그러므로 사람은 고난을 통해서 강해집니다. 고통을 당해 보아야 남의 고통에 대해서도 이해할 수 있고 동정할 수 있습니다. 시험당한 뒤에 깊이 묵상해 보시기 바랍니다. 모든 시험과 고통과 환난이 은혜였음을 깨닫게 될 것입니다.
고전 10:13에서 사도 바울은 “사람이 감당할 시험 밖에는 너희에게 당할 것이 없다”라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 그러므로 어떤 고난과 역경이 온다 해도, 이 모든 것을 하나님께 맡길 때 고난을 쉽게 극복할 수 있고, 고난을 통해서 주시는 하나님의 유익을 체험할 수 있습니다.
2. 고난을 당한 자가 하나님의 위로를 받고, 남을 위로할 수 있습니다.
어려움을 당한 사람만이 어려움에 처해 있는 사람에게 위로의 말을 건넬 수 있습니다. 그래서 자수성가한 사람들의 공통점은 그들 모두가 눈물겨운 고통을 경험했다는 것입니다. 오늘날 성공하는 사람들은 하나같이 어려운 환경 속에서 성공이라는 열매를 거둔 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 영웅이란 평화 시가 아니라 난세에 탄생하는 것도 같은 이치입니다. 전쟁의 와중에, 나라가 망하기 직전에, 극한 환난과 어려움을 당할 때 영웅이 만들어지는 것입니다. 그래서 옛 어른들은 “젊어서 고생은 사서도 한다”라는 말을 하였던 것입니다. 이를 깨달은 시편 기자는 “고난 당한 것이 내게 유익이라 이로 인하여 내가 주의 율례를 배우게 되었나이다”(시 119:71)라고 감사의 고백을 올리고 있지 않습니까?
그러므로 믿는 성도는 하나님의 말씀으로 위로를 받아 고난 당한 사람들에게 위로가 되어 주고, 동반자와 친구가 되어 줘야 합니다. 정초에 쓰디쓴 고들빼기를 캐서 아이들에게 먹이는 풍습도, 앞으로 살아갈 험난한 세상을 이기도록 미리 훈련하는 의미가 담겨 있습니다. 쓰다고 해서 뱉지 말고 이기고 삼켜야 하는 것처럼, 고들빼기처럼 쓴 인생살이에서도 아무리 힘들고 어려운 고난이 온다 할지라도 도망가지 말고 맞서 싸워 이겨야 함을 말해 주고 있지 않습니까?
3. 고난을 통해 하나님께 더욱 가까이 나아가게 됩니다.
고난은 아픔과 답답함과 외로움을 수반하여 옵니다. 그러나 그러한 과정에서 오히려 지혜를 터득하게 되고, 하나님을 찾고, 더 가까이 나아갈 수가 있습니다. 베토벤의 경우를 보십시오. 음악가로서 가장 치명적인 귀머거리의 상태까지 내려가게 됐으나, 오히려 그는 가장 위대한 곡을 탄생시키는 창조자가 되었습니다. 가장 절망적인 순간에 “귀머거리의 괴로움을 통해 네가 세계적인 큰 지도자가 될 수 있다”라는 하나님의 음성을 듣고 좌절하지 않고 더욱 노력한 결과로 가장 위대한 작품을 쓸 수 있었던 것입니다. 헨델도 그의 불후의 명작 ‘메시아’를 쓰기 위해 꼬박 24일간을 식음을 전폐하면서 작곡을 했다고 합니다. 모두가 남이 알지 못하는 눈물, 남이 겪어 보지 못한 번뇌와 고통을 이겨내는 가운데 맺은 결실이 아닙니까?
성도 여러분! 앞으로 이 땅에 절대 폭풍이 없어지지 않습니다. 블레셋 장수 골리앗 같은 태풍이 우리 앞에 닥칩니다. 우리 삶의 현장에 나타납니다. 그럴수록 믿음이 강해지면서 하나님만 의지하고 기도하면서 이겨 나가시기 바랍니다. 모든 것이 하나님의 섭리인 줄 알고, 우리 시대가 하나님의 수중에 있다는 것이 믿어진다면, 편안한 마음으로 모든 환난을 겪는 가운데 감사하시는 성도님들이 되시기 바랍니다.
결론
사도 바울은 살 소망까지 끊어질 정도로 극심한 환난 가운데서도(고후 1:8-9) 자기를 의지하지 않고, 죽은 자를 살리시는 하나님만 의뢰함으로써 승리의 개가를 부를 수 있었습니다. 힘들고 어려울수록 하나님께 가까이 나아가시기 바랍니다. 끝까지 함께하시는 하나님의 약속을 믿으시고 용기백배하여, 넘어지지 말고 목표를 향해 걸어가시는 성도님들이 되시기 바라겠습니다.
