What Should Be the Curricula Vitae (CV) For Paul and Us?
More than a half of year 2022 has passed. A course of one’s life is called a curriculum vitae. If so, like today’s title, we must put our life’s journey before God and examine whether or not there were any falsifications. Thus, our duty as the upright servants and the apostles of Christ who faithfully and diligently served God must be recorded on our CV of faith.
I. The Apostle Paul, the servant of Jesus Christ.
Throughout many letters that the Apostle Paul had written, he introduced himself as a ‘bondservant of Jesus Christ.’ Also at the same time, he says he is an ‘apostle of Jesus Christ.’ (Tit 1:1-3). Likewise, as we see Paul’s introduction of himself as a “bondservant” as well as an “apostle” of Jesus Christ, we must seriously think about what we should put on our CV. From his confession above, the Apostle Paul accurately reveals his purpose in life and identity. As a servant, Paul followed and lived according to the Word of Jesus Christ. He could not boast or be arrogant. Moreover, his life was fully devoted to proclaiming the gospel as an apostle. An apostle refers to a person who was summoned by God to spread the gospel. It denotes a fully-powered envoy sent by God to proclaim the gospel. Jesus too was an “apostle” sent by God (Heb 3:1). God sent Jesus Christ to mankind as His “apostle” to proclaim His gospel, and Jesus in turn called us to be his “apostles.” Have you lived throughout this year as true servants of Jesus? Did you obey and follow the Word from the position of the bondservants? We must examine to see if there were true obedience existed in our hearts so that God could utilize us as He desires. The Apostle Paul became a “prisoner” of the gospel in his young adulthood and endured many life-threatening experiences for over 40 years. Every time he endured such experiences, he introduced his CV. He said, “I am a bondservant of God,” “I am the servant of Jesus,” and “I was summoned to be an apostle.” The Bible in particularly tells us that Paul was summoned to be an apostle for the Gentiles. As soon as he was summoned, the Apostle Paul discarded all secular achievements and CV. The secular CV is meaningless before God. He spent his life only to stand before Jesus and to race toward that sign. That is why he ripped apart and disposed his secular CV which contained his family name, education level, and his achievements and raced ceaselessly only for the Church of Christ (Php 2:8-9, 12-14).
II. The secular CV of the Apostle Paul.
From Php 3:1-6, we see the detailed record of the Apostle Paul’s secular CV. He was an Orthodox Jew who was circumcised 8 days after his birth. He was from the Tribe of Benjamin which means he was a noble man because he was a descendant of King Saul, and a Hebrew of Hebrews. From the standpoint of the Law, he was a Pharisee without blemishes. He was extremely zealous for God that he even killed the followers of the Way and persecuted the Church (Acts 22:4). He was also a Roman citizen by birth. Moreover, he studied under Gamaliel, most renowned scholar of the Law at that time. As you can see, the Apostle Paul’s secular CV was highly impressive and outstanding. However, the Apostle Paul considered these as garbage. His attitude was “In the past, I was such a person, but now, it is all forgotten.” Because Jesus’ gospel of salvation and the knowledge to understand the Cross are most sophisticated, there is no need to boast about the pride of life. In the past before he knew Jesus, the genealogy, education level, and family name were his trophy; however, once he knew about Jesus, he considered everything as garbage and only devoted himself to proclaim the gospel as an apostle for the Gentiles in order to rectify his flaws. Furthermore, the Apostle Paul referred himself as a “ringleader of the sinners” (1Tim 1:15). From the Apostle Paul’s confession, “Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief” (1Tim 1:13), we can see that he considered himself as the worst sinner or the ringleader of the sinners. However, we also see his passion to spread the gospel with tears of repentance and his burning desires to bring one more person before God!
III. The Apostle Paul’s CV of faith.
From Acts 22:23-28, we can see the detailed content of the Apostle Paul’s CV of faith that he diligently and fervently worked to spread the gospel. He worked extremely hard, was confined in prison, and was flogged numerous times. Five times he received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. Three times he was beaten with rods; and the people thought he was dead when he bled after he was stoned in the head so they dragged him outside the city (Acts 14:19). This is the Apostle Paul’s another CV or his spiritual CV. His diligent life to testify for the Word of God and numerous afflictions, pain and sufferings he endured during the process became the building block that enabled him to stand firmly as a faithful Apostle of God instead. Isn’t this the image of the Apostle Paul who discarded his secular CV that was highly decorated and followed the reward of the gospel which is present before him (Php 3:13)?
Conclusion
Although the Apostle Paul had a very decorated secular CV, he discarded them all when he realized himself as a bondservant and an apostle of Christ. Like the Apostle Paul who decorated his spiritual CV splendidly by living faithfully as an apostle to proclaim the gospel and only follow the Word of God, I would like all of you to hold a respectable CV before God.
바울과 우리의 이력서는?
벌써 2022년도의 절반이 넘었습니다. 지나온 삶의 자취를 기록한 것을 ‘이력서’라 합니다. 그렇다면 오늘 말씀의 제목과 같이, 우리는 지금까지 살아온 삶을 하나님 앞에 내어놓고 각자의 이력서에 거짓이 없나 검토해 보아야 합니다. 그래서 부끄러움이 없는 그리스도의 종으로, 사도로서 봉사하며 충성한 내용이 우리의 신앙의 이력서에 기록되어야만 하겠습니다.
1. 예수 그리스도의 종 사도 바울
사도 바울은 여러 서신서에서 자신을 소개할 때 ‘예수 그리스도의 종’이라고 소개하고 있습니다. 또한, 동시에 ‘예수 그리스도의 사도’라고 말씀하고 있습니다(딛 1:1-3). 이처럼 예수 그리스도의 ‘종’이자 ‘사도’라는 바울의 자기소개를 보면서, 우리는 우리 인생의 이력서에는 뭐라고 쓸 것인가 진지하게 생각해 보아야 하겠습니다. 사도 바울은 위의 고백을 통해 자기 삶의 목적과 신분을 정확하게 드러내고 있습니다. 종으로서 그는 예수 그리스도의 말씀대로 순종하며 살아갔습니다. 교만하거나 우쭐댈 수가 없었던 것입니다. 또한, 사도로서 그는 복음증거에 전념하는 삶을 살았습니다. 사도란 복음을 전하기 위해 하나님의 부르심을 받은 존재를 말합니다. 하나님의 전권대사로서 복음증거를 위해 파견된 자를 말합니다. 예수님께서도 하나님이 보내신 ‘사도’였습니다(히 3:1). 하나님께서 인류에게 복음을 증거하는 사도로 예수 그리스도를 파송하셨고, 예수님은 또한 우리를 사도로 부르신 것입니다.
금년에 여러분들은 예수님의 참종으로서 살아왔습니까? 종의 입장에서 말씀에 순종하며 살아왔습니까? 하나님께서 마음대로 부릴 수 있는 그러한 순종이 있었는가 살펴봐야만 하겠습니다. 사도 바울은 젊은 청년의 때에 복음에 포로가 돼서 장장 40여 년 동안 수많은 죽을 고비를 넘겼습니다. 그럴 때마다 바울은 자기의 이력서를 소개하였습니다. “나는 하나님의 종이다”, “나는 예수의 종이다”, “나는 사도로서 부르심을 받았다”. 특별히 성경은 사도 바울이 ‘이방을 위한 사도’로 부르심을 받았다고 말씀하고 있습니다. 부르심 받는 순간 사도 바울은 모든 육신적인 업적과 이력서를 다 버렸습니다. 하나님 앞에 육신의 이력서가 있을 수 없었습니다. 오직 예수 앞에 있는 것, 그 푯대를 향해서 달려가는 삶. 그래서 자신의 가문, 학벌, 업적을 담은 육신의 이력서는 다 찢어서 쓰레기통에 던져 버리고, 오직 주의 교회를 위하여 쉬지 않고 달려갔던 것입니다(빌 2:8-9,12-14).
2. 사도 바울의 인간적 이력서
빌 3:1-6 말씀을 보면, 사도 바울의 인간적인 이력서의 내용이 자세히 기록되어 있습니다. 그는 난 지 8일 만에 할례를 받은 정통 유대인이었습니다. 베냐민 지파 즉 사울왕의 후손으로, 왕족이었으며 히브리인 중의 히브리인이라고 기록하고 있습니다. 율법적으로는 바리새인으로서 율법에 흠이 없는 자였습니다. 또 열심으로는 교회를 핍박하고 사람들을 죽여 가면서까지 열심을 냈습니다(행 22:4). 또한, 사도 바울은 나면서부터 로마 시민권을 가진 자였습니다. 나아가, 당대 최고의 율법학자였던 가말리엘의 문하생이었습니다.
이처럼 사도 바울의 인간적인 이력서는 하나같이 화려하며 특출하지 않은 것이 없었습니다. 그러나 사도 바울은 이 모든 것을 배설물로 여겼습니다. “나는 과거에는 이런 사람이었는데 이제는 다 잊어버렸습니다”. 예수님의 구원의 복음, 십자가를 아는 지식이 가장 고상하기 때문에 더 이상 육신의 자랑거리는 필요 없어졌습니다. 과거에 예수를 몰랐을 때는 족보나 학벌, 가문이 자기 앞에 있었지만, 예수를 안 뒤부터는 모든 것을 배설물로 여기고, 자신의 고장 난 부분을 고치기 위한 이방의 사도로서 복음증거에 전념하였던 것입니다.
나아가, 사도 바울은 자신을 가리켜 ‘죄인 중에 괴수’라고 고백하고 있습니다(딤전1:15). “내가 전에는 훼방자요 핍박자요 포행자이었으나 도리어 긍휼을 입은 것은 내가 믿지 아니할 때에 알지 못하고 행하였음이라”(딤전 1:13)라고 고백하던 사도 바울에게 자신은 그야말로 죄인 중에 괴수나 다름없었던 것입니다. 그러면서 회개의 눈물로 복음을 전하고, 한 사람이라도 하나님 앞으로 인도하고자 하는 뜨거운 열정!
3. 사도 바울의 신앙적 이력서
행 22:23-28까지의 말씀을 보면, 사도 바울이 복음을 전하기 위해 수고하고 애쓴 신앙적 이력서의 내용을 살펴볼 수 있습니다. 그는 수고를 넘치도록 했고, 옥에도 갇혔으며, 매도 수없이 맞았습니다. 40에 하나 감한 매를 다섯 번이나 맞았습니다. 세 번은 태장으로 맞고, 또한 돌로 머리를 맞아 피를 흘리자, 사람들이 죽은 줄 알고 성 밖에 던지기도 했습니다(행 14:19 이하). 이것이 사도 바울의 또 다른 이력서, 즉 영적인 이력서입니다. 하나님의 말씀을 증거하기 위해 애썼던 삶의 모습, 그 과정에서 겪었던 수많은 환난과 고통이 이제는 오히려 사도 바울을 우뚝 서게 하고, 하나님의 충실한 사도로 세우게 하는 원동력이 되었습니다. 화려했던 과거의 인간적인 이력서는 다 찢어 버리고, 오직 앞에 있는 복음의 상을 위해 쫓아가는 사도 바울의 모습이 아니겠습니까?(빌 3:13)
결론
사도 바울은 화려한 육신의 이력서를 가지고 있었지만, 자신을 그리스도의 종이자 사도로 인식하고 다 찢어 버렸습니다. 그리고 오직 하나님의 말씀에 순종하며 복음을 전하는 사도로서 충실하게 살아감으로써 신앙의 이력서를 화려하게 장식했던 것처럼, 우리 모든 성도님도 하나님 앞에 부끄러움 없는 이력(履歷)을 가지시기를 바라겠습니다.
