Who is Going to Close the Gate of My Life?
Although many people are born on this earth, we see many unfortunate people in the Bible who do not live like a human being but live and die like beasts. In short, they “knew God, but they neither glorified Him as God nor gave thanks to Him. They exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles” (Rom 1:21-23). The Psalmist said, “People who have wealth but lack understanding are like the beasts that perish” (Ps 49:20). Likewise, there is no greater blessing to live a life within God to resemble Him and to walk with Him in this sinful world that is easy to live away from God and live like the beasts. When we live like Noah who lived a perfect life to find grace in the eyes of God, our last days will be resolved by God.
I. Man cannot close his own gate by himself.
From today’s Scripture text, Gen 7:16, we can discover that the door to Noah’s ark was not closed by Noah but by God. This teaches us a lesson that a man cannot close the gate of his life by himself. People tend to prepare for their own safety measures. We put an auxiliary key on the front door and have taken various measures for the success of our businesses; but we have no choice but to accept the reality that things do not turn out as we planned. Likewise, there are so many flaws found in man. The reason that things don’t turn out the way they were planned even though many thoughts, strategies and attitudes were put into actions is because people rely on themselves. It is because they tend to resolve their life, their businesses and other functions all by themselves. However, even if you initiate it, God must complete it. Man must realize that he cannot close his own gate, so he needs to come before God. Noah walked with God during the time where the sinfulness completely presided over. As a result, God told the Judgment of Flood only to Noah. What is the reason that God protected and blessed Noah as such? It is because Noah was a righteous man during that time and a perfect man who obeyed the Word. Moreover, Noah’s heart was troubled by the fact that other people have sinned. That is why God guided Noah and led him until he entered the ark. When speaking about the Final Judgment Day, Jesus said, “The days of the Son of Man is like the Days of Noah.” At the time where wickedness presided over, Noah lived an unashamed life before man and God. Noah “walked with God” means that he lived “within His eyesight.” While the world was consistently coupled up with sinfulness, Noah coupled up with God and lived with Him. God will close the gates of only those who have faith like Noah. God will be responsible for the last days of his life. God was the start, the progress, and the completion of Noah’s life. That was why the faith of Noah was shining like the stars in the sky although the nights of sinfulness were deepening.
II. The gate of lifemust be made by man but closed by God.
The door to the ark was clearly made by Noah but closed by God. The door that God closed did not swing open or became loose even with a turbulent storm or scary waves. It is likewise in our lives. When we make money with the grace and blessings that God gives us, then our wealth becomes worry-free wealth. When God closes it, all plan of man will be fulfilled to the end and be conserved safely. Even though man puts in all efforts to devise his safety accessories, they will eventually wear out and break off. This means that man cannot be safe and happy all by himself. A person without God is worthless and useless. A person with God is eternal and valuable. There is dignity, and it is worth its existence. That is why God must protect that gate. He needs to protect our hearts, families, businesses and work places. What is the reason that you cannot bear fruits no matter how much efforts you put in, no matter how hard you try? It is because you do not entrust unto God but try to close it by yourself. “Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain” (Ps 127:1-2). When it said that God shuts them in, it means that He will protect every living creature in the ark. Because it was a door that was directed by God and personally closed by God, it is a durable door that will sustain a flood or a gusting wind. I may conduct my business, but God must complete that business. Everything will be possible when God helps us (Php 4:13). What all man needs to do is just put in all efforts according to God’s Will. We must entrust the remainder unto God and His Will. When we entrust unto God’s helping hand, everything will be successful and prosperous.
Conclusion
Have you ever counted how much grace you have received from God and how great His grace is? Even though the grace and love that God gave us are unimaginable, we tend to exchange the glory of God with the oxen that chew on grass, and we try to become our own masters. You put on all kinds of safety measures and try to complete with your own hands, but the end result of a sinful man is always nothing but tears and regrets. Jer 2:13 warns about the foolishness of people who dug ditches because they did not believe in God. I sincerely hope that while we think again about God-given grace through today’s sermon, we all entrust our gates of our lives onto God.
나의 인생의 문을 누가 닫을 것인가?
성경을 볼 때 이 땅에 수많은 사람이 태어나지만, 사람답게 살지 못하고 짐승처럼 야만인이 되어 생을 마치는 불행한 사람들이 많습니다. 한마디로, “하나님을 알되 하나님으로 영화롭게도 아니하며 감사치도 아니하”는 삶을 사는 가운데 “하나님의 영광을 금수와 버러지 형상의 우상으로 바꾸어” 버린 사람들입니다(롬 1:21-23). 시편 기자는 “존귀에 처하나 깨닫지 못하는 자는 멸망하는 짐승과 같다”라고 했습니다(시 49:20). 이처럼 하나님을 떠나 짐승처럼 살아가기 쉬운 죄악된 세상에서, 하나님과 동행하며 하나님 안에서 하나님을 닮아 가는 삶을 사는 것처럼 큰 축복이 없습니다. 노아처럼 하나님의 눈에 쏙 들 정도로 온전한 삶을 살아갈 때, 우리 인생의 마무리가 하나님에 의해 잘 되는 것입니다.
1. 사람은 자기 문을 스스로 닫을 수 없습니다.
오늘 본문 창 7:16을 보면, 노아의 방주의 문은 노아가 아니라 하나님께서 닫으셨음을 발견할 수 있습니다. 이는 사람이 자기 인생의 문을 스스로 닫을 수 없다는 교훈을 우리에게 말해 주고 있습니다.
사람들은 저마다 각자의 안전장치를 마련해 둡니다. 현관문에 보조키도 달고, 사업의 성공을 위해서도 여러 가지 방책을 마련해 두고 있지만, 자기의 생각대로 되지 않는 현실을 인정하지 않을 수 없습니다. 사람은 이처럼 실수가 있습니다. 여러 가지 생각과 계획, 마음가짐을 해 보지만 되지 않는 이유는 바로 자기 자신을 의지하기 때문입니다. 자기 인생의 마무리, 사업과 모든 행사를 자기 힘으로 마무리하려 하기 때문입니다. 그러나 분명 시작은 내가 했을지라도 마무리는 하나님께서 해 주셔야 합니다. 인생은 스스로 자기의 문을 닫을 수 없다는 것을 인정하고 하나님 앞에 나아가야만 합니다.
노아는 죄악이 관영하는 시대에 하나님과 동행했습니다. 그랬을 때 하나님은 노아한테만 홍수 심판을 알려 주셨습니다. 하나님께서 노아를 이처럼 보호하고 축복해 주신 이유가 무엇입니까? 그것은 노아가 당시에 의인이었고 완전한 자였으며, 말씀대로 순종했기 때문입니다. 나아가, 다른 사람들이 죄짓는 것에 대해 마음 아파하는 사람이었던 것입니다. 그래서 하나님은 노아가 방주에 들어갈 때까지 그를 붙잡아 주고, 인도해 주셨던 것입니다.
예수님께서는 마지막 심판의 날에 대해 말씀하시면서 “인자의 날은 노아의 때와 같다” 하셨습니다. 죄악이 관영한 시대에 노아는 하나님 앞에나 사람 앞에 추호도 부끄러움이 없는 삶을 살았습니다. ‘하나님과 동행했다’는 말은 ‘하나님의 눈앞에서’ 살았다는 뜻입니다. 세상이 한결같이 죄악과 짝하고 있을 때, 노아는 하나님과 짝하고, 하나님과 함께 살았던 것입니다. 이러한 노아와 같은 신앙을 가진 자만이 하나님께서 그 문을 닫아 주십니다. 그 사람의 인생의 마무리를 하나님께서 책임져 주시는 것입니다. 노아의 삶은 하나님이 시작이고, 진행이고, 마침이 되는 삶이었습니다. 그러므로, 죄악의 밤이 깊어가고 있었지만, 노아의 신앙은 하늘의 별과 같이 빛나고 있었던 것입니다.
2. 인생의 문은 사람이 만들고 하나님이 닫으셔야 합니다.
방주의 문은 분명 노아가 만들었지만, 그 문을 닫은 것은 노아가 아니라 하나님이셨습니다. 파도가 치고 폭풍이 불어 닥쳐도 하나님께서 닫으신 문은 결코 열리거나 풀어지지 않았습니다. 우리 인생도 마찬가지입니다. 하나님께서 은혜 가운데 축복을 주셔서, 돈을 벌 때 근심이 없는 재물이 됩니다. 하나님께서 닫아 주실 때 사람의 모든 계획이 끝까지 성취되고 안전하게 보전되는 것입니다. 사람이 모든 노력을 다해 자신의 안전장치를 만든다 해도 결국엔 다 낡아서 떨어지고 맙니다. 이는 사람이 혼자서는 안전하고 행복할 수 없다는 뜻입니다. 하나님 없는 나 자신은 무익하기 짝이 없습니다. 하나님이 있는 나 자신이 영원하며 가치가 있습니다. 무게가 있습니다. 존재할 수 있는 보람이 있습니다. 그래서 하나님이 문을 지켜 주셔야 합니다. 마음도 지켜 주시고, 가정과 직장과 사업을 지켜 주셔야만 합니다. 나의 수고가 아무리 많고, 아무리 애를 쓴다 해도 열매를 맺지 못하는 이유가 무엇입니까? 하나님께 맡기지 않고 내가 닫으려 하기 때문입니다. 주께서 집을 세우지 아니하시면 건축자의 수고가 헛되며, 주께서 성을 지키지 아니하시면 파수꾼의 깨어 있음이 허사가 됩니다(시 127:1-2).
하나님께서 닫으셨다는 것은 하나님께서 방주 안에 있는 모든 생명을 안전하게 보호하신다는 뜻입니다. 하나님께서 지시하시고 직접 잠그신 문이기에, 어떤 홍수나 바람에도 끄떡없이 견디는 견고한 문입니다. 사업은 내가 하지만, 그 사업의 마침은 하나님께서 해 주셔야 합니다. 하나님께서 도와주실 때 모든 것이 다 가능합니다(빌 4:13). 사람은 단지 하나님의 뜻에 따라 최선을 다하기만 하면 됩니다. 그 이상은 하나님의 선하신 뜻에 맡기는 것입니다. 하나님의 마무리 손길에 맡길 때 모든 것이 형통하게 되는 것입니다.
결론
우리가 하나님께 받은 은혜가 얼마나 많고 큰지 헤아려 보셨습니까? 하나님께서 우리에게 베푸신 은혜와 사랑이 한이 없음에도 불구하고, 사람들은 풀 먹는 소와 하나님의 영광을 바꾸고, 스스로 주인이 되려 하고 있습니다. 각종 안전장치를 해 놓고 내 손으로 마감을 하려 하지만, 죄악된 인간의 결과는 늘 눈물과 후회밖에 없습니다. 렘 2:13에서는, 사람들이 하나님을 믿지 않고 스스로 웅덩이를 파는 어리석음에 대해 경고하고 있습니다. 오늘 말씀을 통해 다시 한번 받은 은혜를 생각하는 가운데, 하나님께 내 인생의 문을 맡기시는 성도님들이 되시기 바랍니다.
