Am I Also a True Worker of the Church?
The Apostle Paul was a man who always considered himself as a worker of the church and was faithful as one. He referred to himself as a “servant of the gospel” (Col 1:23), a “servant of the church” (Col 1:25), and a “minister of a new covenant” (2Cor 3:6). Through the image of the Apostle Paul who lived this perfect life of faith, I would like all of you to use this precious time to reflect back on your faith to see whether or not you were indeed a true worker of the church.
I. He who proclaims Jesus Christ is a worker of the church.
The v28 of today’s Scripture text says, “He is the one we proclaim.” Here, ‘he’ refers to Jesus Christ. He is the image of the invisible God (Col 1:15). He is also the mystery of God (Col 1:26-27). Thus, the true workers of the church are those who proclaim Jesus Christ and his gospel who is the image of God and His mystery. When we proclaim Jesus, we receive the glorious riches (Col 1:27). With the life that is within him, we are filled with the work of life like it sprouts a bud when a seed is planted. It means that a church becomes a living church. A dead church will not sprout no matter how many times the seeds are planted. It is because the seed itself is dead. Thus, the birth of Jesus is the good news of joy like a new life comes out piercing through the ground (Lk 1:19). By commanding the construction of the tabernacle through Moses in the Old Testament times, God is presenting the archetype of His workers. The tabernacle is a place where Jesus dwells, a place where God dwells, and a symbol of His presence that God is present amongst mankind. Hence, the vision of the tabernacle construction presented through Moses is like proclaiming Jesus Christ today. Surprisingly, we see from the Old Testament that every man over the age of 20 who participated in the construction of the tabernacle all participated in the offering (Exo 28:20-26, 38:24-30). The Israelites participated voluntarily without delay. The image of the Israelites who willingly participated with generosity is indeed the image of a true worker of the church.
II. The various features of the workers of the church who are chosen by God.
The workers who participated in the tabernacle construction in the Old Testament times were all chosen by God Himself. First, Moses was the one who received the revelation of the tabernacle directly from God on Mt. Sinai, and he was the overseer of the construction of the tabernacle by broadcasting it to the people. In the course of the construction, Moses did “as the LORD commanded him,” so he was able to bear the fruit of mission accomplishment that “all the work was completed just as the LORD commanded him” as a result (Exo 38:19,21,23,25,27, 29, 32). Second, ‘Ithamar’ was a person who manage all the materials necessary for the construction of the tabernacle as a treasurer (Exo 38:21). He was a meticulous man who recorded the income of offerings brought in by the congregation and expenditure spent on the materials used in the construction. Third, Bezalel was in charge of all metalwork (Exo 31:1-5), and Oholiab was a skilled weaver, embroider and designer for the tabernacle (Exo 35:34-35). Lastly, although nameless, “all the women who were willing and had the skill” spun with their hands (Exo 35:25-26). The trait found in all these people is that they did not volunteer but were “chosen” by God (Exo 36:2, 35:30). We can see that God granted wisdom, understanding, and skill to those whom He selected and called and allowed them to build the temple that He will dwell in and will use it as He pleases.
III. The characteristics of the workers of God.
The workers of God whom He has chosen and called show many gifts and attributes. First, the workers of God were overflowing with abundant inspiration. It is clearly recorded in Exo 35:31, “he was filled with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills to do all kinds of work.” It is also written in Exo 35:34 that Oholiab was filled with the ability to do all kinds of work (Exo 36:1,8). As you can see, all these people whom God called through Moses were all filled with His grace and Spirit. Second, the workers of God are creative people who searched. When God told Moses of the plans and content of the tabernacle, he handled it skillfully and wholeheartedly to the extent of his ability and wisdom. We can see that Oholiab did not just do what God instructed him to do, but he continued to seek and devoted himself fully to the construction of the temple using all his experience and expertise (Exo 35:34-35). Third, the workers of the church are honest people. When Moses commanded the construction of the temple to the people, they brought abundant materials (Exo 36:5). Those who managed it, like the centurions and the commanders of thousands, managed it honestly without being tempted by the materials. Lastly, the workers of the church are diligent. It is recorded in Exo 40:1-33 that these workers who participated in various areas of the construction all completed the work by working diligently. The beginning, the progress, and the end were honest and diligent without anyone fleeing in the middle.
Conclusion
What is common between those who proclaimed Jesus Christ and His gospel in the New Testament times and those who were chosen by God to build the tabernacle in the time of Moses, was they were the “workers of the church.” They received the holy calling and were filled with His Spirit so they strived to fulfill their given tasks. They were the ones who accomplished the will of God by fulfilling His commands. Aren’t they truly the glorious children of the Light who will be blessed for thousands of generations to come?
나도 교회의 참된 일꾼인가?
사도 바울은 자신을 늘 교회의 일꾼으로 생각하고, 일꾼처럼 충성을 다했던 인물입니다. 그는 자신을 가리켜 ‘복음의 일꾼’(골 1:23), ‘교회의 일꾼’(골 1:25), 또한 ‘새 언약의 일꾼’(고후 3:6)이라 칭하였습니다. 이처럼 완벽한 신앙의 삶을 살았던 사도 바울의 모습을 통해 이 시간 각자의 신앙을 점검해 보고, ‘나도 과연 교회의 참된 일꾼인가’를 점검해 보는 귀한 시간이 되시기 바랍니다.
1. 예수 그리스도를 전파하는 자가 교회의 일꾼입니다.
오늘 본문 28절을 보면 “우리가 그를 전파하여”라는 말씀이 나옵니다. 여기서 ‘그’는 예수 그리스도를 말합니다. 그분은 보이지 아니하는 하나님의 형상입니다(골 1:15). 또한, 하나님의 비밀입니다(골 1:26-27). 그러므로 참된 교회의 일꾼은 하나님의 형상이요 비밀이신 예수 그리스도, 그분의 복음을 전하는 자들입니다. 예수를 전할 때 영광의 소망을 얻게 됩니다(골 1:27). 그 속에 있는 생명으로 말미암아, 마치 씨를 뿌리면 싹이 올라오는 것같이 생명의 역사로 충만해집니다. 살아 있는 교회가 된다는 말입니다. 죽은 교회는 아무리 씨를 뿌려도 싹이 올라오지 않습니다. 씨 자체가 죽었기 때문입니다. 그래서 예수님의 탄생은 마치 생명이 흙을 뚫고 나오듯 기쁨의 좋은 소식이 됩니다(눅 1:19).
구약시대에 하나님께서는 모세를 통해 성막 건축을 명령하심으로 하나님의 일꾼들의 전형(典型)을 제시해 주고 있습니다. 성막은 예수님이 거하시는 곳, 하나님의 거처요 인간들 사이에 임재하시는 임재의 상징입니다. 그러므로 모세를 통해 제시된 성막 건축의 비전은 오늘날 예수 그리스도를 전하는 것과도 같습니다. 구약성경을 볼 때 놀라운 것은, 성막 건축에 참여한 스무 살 넘은 모든 장정이 하나도 빠짐없이 헌금에 동참했다는 것입니다(출 28:20-26, 38:24-30). 이스라엘 백성은 지체 없이 자발적으로 참여했습니다. 조금도 인색함이 없이 적극적으로 동참한 이스라엘 백성의 모습이야말로 교회의 참된 일꾼의 모습인 것입니다.
2. 하나님이 지명해 주신 교회 일꾼들의 다양한 모습들
구약 때 성막 건축을 위해 기용된 일꾼들은 모두가 하나님께서 직접 지명하여 주신 분들입니다.
먼저, 모세는 시내산에서 직접 성막 계시를 받은 장본인으로, 이를 백성들에게 공포함으로써 성막 건축 작업을 가동하는 총책임자였습니다. 모세는 모든 건축의 과정에서 “여호와께서 자기에게 명하신 대로” 행하였으며, 그 결과로 “여호와께서 자기에게 명하신 대로 다 되니라” 하는 임무완수의 열매를 맺을 수 있었습니다(출 38:19,21,23,25,27,29,32).
둘째, ‘이다말’은 회계로서 성막 건축에 필요한 모든 물질을 관리하던 사람입니다(출 38:21). 그는 정확한 사람으로, 교인들의 건축 헌금과 공사에 사용된 물질의 수입, 지출을 계산하는 임무를 맡았습니다.
셋째, ‘브살렐’은 금속 세공의 총책임자였으며(출 31:1-5) ‘오홀리압’은 성막을 직조하는 뛰어난 기술자였습니다(출 35:34-35).
끝으로, 이름은 나와 있지 않지만 “마음이 슬기로운 모든 여인”(출 35:25-26)도 선택을 받아 손수 실을 뽑는 일에 쓰임을 받았습니다.
이 모든 사람의 특징은 자의로 행한 것이 아니라 하나님께서 ‘지명’한 사람들이라는 것입니다(출 36:2, 35:30). 하나님께서 지명하여 부르신 사람들에게 지혜와 명철과 총명을 주어서 당신이 거하실 전을 건축하게 하시고, 원하시는 대로 사용하셨음을 알 수 있습니다.
3. 하나님의 일꾼들의 특징
하나님께서 지명하여 부르신 일꾼들은 여러 가지 은사와 특징을 보여 주고 있습니다.
첫째, 하나님의 일꾼들은 풍성한 영감이 차고 넘쳤습니다. 출 35:31 말씀을 볼 때, “하나님의 신이 그에게 충만케 하여 지혜와 총명과 지식으로 여러 가지 일을 하게 하시되”라고 분명히 기록돼 있습니다. 출 35:34에도, 오홀리압을 감동시켜 지혜로운 마음을 충만케 하셨다고 말씀하고 있습니다(출 36:1,8). 이처럼 하나님께서 모세를 통해 부르신 사람들은 한결같이 하나님의 은혜와 영이 충만했던 사람들입니다.
둘째, 하나님의 일꾼들은 창조적이고 연구하는 인물들입니다. 하나님께서 모세에게 성막의 설계와 내용을 말씀하실 때, 그는 자기의 지혜와 저력이 미치는 곳까지 섬세하게, 정성을 다하여 감당했던 것입니다. 오홀리압도, 하나님께 지시받은 일만 행한 것이 아니라, 여러 가지 일로 연구하고 자신의 경험과 지식을 총동원하여 성전 건축에 매진했던 것을 볼 수 있습니다(출 35:34-35).
셋째, 교회의 일꾼들은 정직한 사람들입니다. 모세가 백성에게 성전 건축을 명령하자, 백성은 물질이 넘칠 정도로 많이 가져왔습니다(출 36:5). 이를 맡아 관리하는 백부장이나 천부장 등 관리하는 사람들은 물질의 유혹에 빠지지 않고 정직하게 관리한 사람들입니다.
끝으로, 교회의 일꾼들은 성실하게 일하는 자들입니다. 출 40:1-33 말씀을 볼 때, 여러 가지 일로 쓰임을 받은 일꾼들은 성실하게 일함으로 성막 건축을 완성했다고 기록되어 있습니다. 중간에 도망간 자가 없이, 시작과 진행과 끝마침이 정직했고 성실했습니다.
결론
신약시대에 예수 그리스도와 그분의 복음을 전했던 자들이나, 모세 때 하나님의 지명을 받아 성막을 건축했던 자들의 공통점은 그들이 ‘교회의 일꾼’이었다는 점입니다. 하나님으로부터 거룩한 부름을 받아 하나님의 영이 충만하여, 주어진 일에 최선을 다했습니다. 명령하신 바를 성취하여 하나님의 뜻을 이룬 자들입니다. 참으로 영광스럽고, 자손만대 복된, 빛의 자녀들이 아니겠습니까?
