Blessed are Those Who are Anxious and Scared
Today’s Scripture text presents us with 3 types of fear and anxiety. First, it is the fear and anxiety of the “mustard seed and the yeast” (v 18-21); secondly, it is the fear and anxiety of the “narrow gate” (v 24-30); and lastly, it is the fear and anxiety for “today” (v 31-33). The fear and anxiety of the “mustard seed and the yeast” is the anxiety that is originated when one thinks there is insufficiency in volume or quantity, whereas the anxiety of the “narrow gate” refers to the fear and anxiety from pain, despair and agony. The fear for “today” refers to the anxiety for current status. However, paradoxically speaking, blessed are those who feel these 3 types of fear and anxiety yet overcome them with faith.
I. The anxiety of the “mustard seed and the yeast”- The anxiety originated from the insufficiency in volume or quantity.
This anxiety is originated when one feels insufficient compared to others. The people feel anxious and get disappointed when they realize their insufficiency and unworthiness through comparing themselves with others. However, through the parable of the mustard seed and the yeast, Jesus is telling us about the great blessing that even though it may be the smallest in quantity, 1 will become 1000 and that will become 10000 if there is faith and thanksgiving. In this mustard seed, the smallest seed of all, contains the promise of a big tree that a bird can rest on its branches in the future, and a handful of yeast has the great blessing to rise 60 pounds of flour. Thus, the Word of Jesus that the ‘Kingdom of God is in this tiny mustard seed’ is nothing but the great truth. These 2 parables enable us to realize that the faith is the promise for growth. Thus, the secret to true peace and happiness is to believe that it will become the ‘Kingdom of God once I add faith to this tiny mustard seed that I have.’ It is the belief that great power will be generated when you have the faith of “plus,” even if it is small. I would like you not to think “I have nothing” but believe that the blessing of satisfaction, success and fulfilment will surely be accomplished if you only add faith. Bethlehem is referred in Mt 2:6 as “by no means least among the rulers of Judah.” Although, it may be a very small and shabby town in reality, it isn’t so because Jesus Christ was born there. Because Jesus is the Original Source, the Lord of blessings, and the Lord of everything, how can a town that he dwells in be the small, shabby town? Likewise, I would like you never to disappoint at your current situation even if what you have is tiny like the mustard seed and shabby like a handful of yeast. It is not small just because it looks small. Isn’t the yeast the promise of expansion? No matter how small it may be, there will be a great result like the miracle of the 2 fish and 5 loaves of bread when there is thanksgiving. Even though a little child offered 2 fish and 5 loaves of bread, a great blessing of miracle unfolded to feed more than 5000 men and had left over full of 12 baskets when Jesus lifted these and gave thanks.
II. The anxiety of the narrow gate- The anxiety coming from the pain, agony and despair.
From the ‘Sermon on the Mount’ in Mt 7, Jesus is telling us to make every effort to enter through the ‘narrow gate.’ God does not close the wide gate and leaves it open whereas the narrow gate gets closed. That is why Jesus is telling us to make every effort to enter through the narrow gate before it gets closed. What is the “narrow gate” denoted here? Getting a job is a narrow gate, and entering into college is not a wide gate, either. Rearing the children or having a spousal conflict is a narrow gate as well. When others live in the big houses and are successful but your house is small and shabby and you are consistently hit with the failures, the frustrations you feel from it is also the narrow gate. There are so many narrow gates of indescribable mental anguish, agony, loneliness and sadness exist around us. However, although paradoxical, Jesus is telling us to enter through the narrow gate. It is because the wide gate is the gate of destruction though it may look like the gate of success or the gate of glory. On the contrary, the vast world of heaven will unfold before you once you pass through that gate that seems distressful and painful. The beautiful sound of the piano is possible when about 230 strings are pulled tightly with 70-300 kg tensions. Like it is only possible to make beautiful sound under the intense pressure to a point that the string might sever, the narrow gates in our lives will maintain the tension within us and leads us to the life (Mt 7:14). That is why God desires to lead the believers to the narrow gate. Paradoxically, God was so delighted when He put the Apostle Paul into Roman prison. It is because the gospel was spread to the Gentiles and God’s Divine Administration for salvation was spread throughout the world through this ordeal, although it may have been the agonizing narrow gate for the Apostle Paul physically. When Paul realized this, he was able to confidently testify “What has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel, so rejoice and be glad” while he was incarcerated in prison.
III. The anxiety for today- the anxiety that approaches without warning.
When we look at today’s Scripture text, some Pharisees approached Jesus and told him that Herod wanted to kill Jesus. However, Jesus replied, “I will keep on driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow, and on the third day, I will reach my goal” when Jesus heard this. As you can see, the anxiety for “today” refers to the anxiety that approaches our lives without warning. However, Jesus was not disconcerted at such anxiety. Instead, he proclaimed the fact, “I will perform my duties today and tomorrow even if I fall, and I will rise on the 3rd day!” which means “I will carry the entire sin of all mankind and abolish them, and then I will resurrect while God delights.” No matter how frightening and shocking incidents or unforeseeable difficulties may approach you today and shake up your current status, I would like you to believe that you will be able to resolve all problems and overcome them in 3 days.
Conclusion
Do you have anxiety coming from insufficiency in resources? When you plant in faith, it will sprout buds because it has life; and it will grow into a big tree so that many birds will come and rest on its branches. Even though there may be a painful narrow gate, the vast Kingdom of God waits for you once you enter through it. I sincerely hope that even if unforeseeable agony may come upon you today, there will be a great blessing that you will be able to resolve it in its entirety on the 3rd day.
불안하고 두려워하는 자가 복이 있다.
오늘 본문을 보면 세 종류의 불안과 두려움이 있습니다. 첫째는 ‘겨자씨와 누룩’의 불안과 두려움(18-21절)이며, 둘째는 ‘좁은 문’의 불안과 두려움(24-30절)이고, 셋째는 ‘오늘날’의 불안과 두려움입니다(31-33절). ‘겨자씨와 누룩의 불안’은 물량적으로 적다고 생각해서 오는 불안이며, ‘좁은 문의 불안’은 고통과 좌절과 괴로움에서 오는 불안과 두려움을 말합니다. ‘오늘날의 불안’은 현재의 지위에 대한 불안을 말해 줍니다. 그러나 역설적으로, 이 세 가지 불안과 두려움을 느끼고, 믿음으로 이겨내는 자가 복이 있습니다.
1. 겨자씨와 누룩의 불안–물량적인 부족에서 오는 불안
물질이나 물량에 있어서 남에 비해 적을 때 오는 불안입니다. 사람은 비교를 통해 자신의 왜소함과 부족을 느낄 때 불안해하게 되고 좌절하게 되는 것입니다. 그러나 예수님은 겨자씨와 누룩의 비유를 통해, 물량적으로는 가장 작지만 감사와 믿음만 있으면 하나가 천을 이루고 천이 만을 이루는 큰 축복을 말씀해 주고 있습니다. 가장 작은 씨인 겨자씨 속에 장차 새가 깃들일 수 있는 큰 나무의 약속이 들어 있으며, 한 줌의 누룩에 밀가루 서 말을 부풀게 하는 큰 축복이 있는 것입니다. 그러므로 ‘천국은 이 작은 겨자씨 속에 있다’는 예수님의 말씀은 위대한 진리가 아닐 수 없습니다.
이 두 가지 비유는 신앙이란 성장의 약속임을 일깨워 주고 있습니다. 그러므로 참다운 안정과 행복의 비결은 ‘내가 가지고 있는 작은 겨자씨에 신앙을 더하기만 하면 천국이 된다’는 것을 믿는 것입니다. 작지만 플러스의 신앙을 가질 때 거대한 힘이 발생한다는 믿음입니다. “나는 가진 게 아무것도 없다” 생각하지 말고, 신앙을 더하기만 하면 만족과 형통과 성취의 축복이 반드시 이루어진다는 것을 믿으시기 바랍니다.
마 2:6 말씀을 보면, 베들레헴을 가리켜 “너는 유대 고을 중에 가장 작지 아니하도다”라고 하였습니다. 실상 그곳은 아주 작고 보잘것없는 고을이지만 그곳에서 예수 그리스도께서 탄생하셨기 때문에 절대 작지 않은 것입니다. 예수님은 근본이며 복의 주인이며 모든 것의 모든 것 되시기 때문에, 그분이 거하시는 고을이 어찌 작을 수 있겠습니까? 마찬가지로, 내가 가진 것이 비록 겨자씨같이, 한 줌 누룩같이 보잘것없다 할지라도 절대로 실망하지 마시기 바랍니다. 적게 보인다고 결코 적은 게 아닙니다. 누룩은 확대의 약속이 아닙니까? 아무리 작아도 감사할 때, 오병이어의 기적처럼 큰 결과를 가져옵니다. 오병이어를 바쳤지만 이를 들고 예수께서 감사할 때 남자만 5천 명이 먹고 열두 광주리가 남는 큰 축복의 기적이 일어난 것입니다.
2. 좁은 문의 불안–고통과 괴로움과 좌절에서 오는 불안
마태복음 7장의 산상수훈에서도 예수님은 ‘좁은 문에 들어가기를 힘쓰라’고 말씀하고 계십니다. 큰 문은 하나님께서 닫지 않고 열어 두시는데, 좁은 문은 닫힙니다. 그래서 닫히기 전에 그 좁은 문에 들어가기를 힘쓰라는 것입니다.
여기서 말하는 ‘좁은 문’은 무엇입니까? 취직을 하는 것도 좁은 문이며, 대학에 들어가는 것도 절대 넓지 않은 문입니다. 자녀교육이나 부부간의 갈등도 좁은 문입니다. 남들은 넓은 집에 살고 잘나가는데 내 집은 비좁고 실패의 연속이라 할 때 거기서 겪는 갈등도 좁은 문입니다. 정신적으로 말할 수 없는 고통과 고독과 슬픔의 좁은 문이 우리 생활 주변에는 너무도 많습니다. 그러나 예수님은 역설적이지만 좁은 문으로 들어가라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 넓은 문은 형통의 문 같고, 영광의 문 같지만, 그곳은 멸망의 문이기 때문입니다. 반면에, 좁은 문은 괴롭고 고통스럽지만, 그 문을 통과하기만 하면 넓은 천국의 세계가 펼쳐져 있습니다. 피아노의 아름다운 소리는 230개나 되는 현이 저마다 70~300kg나 되는 장력으로 팽팽하게 당겨져 있어서 가능합니다. 강하고 끊어질 듯한 긴장 속에서만 아름다운 소리를 낼 수 있듯이, 우리 인생의 삶에서도 좁은 문은 긴장을 유지시켜 생명으로 인도하는 문이 됩니다(마 7:14). 그래서 하나님은 믿는 성도를 좁은 문으로 인도하기를 좋아하십니다. 사도 바울을 로마의 감옥에 집어넣은 하나님께서는 역설적으로 너무 기뻐하셨습니다. 육신적으로 사도 바울에게는 고통의 좁은 문이지만, 결과적으로 이를 통해 복음이 이방으로 향하게 되고, 하나님의 구원 경륜이 전 세계로 뻗어 나가게 됐기 때문입니다. 이를 깨달은 바울은 감옥에 갇혀서도 ‘나는 복음을 위해 매인 바 되었으니 기뻐하고 기뻐하라’고 당당하게 증거할 수 있었던 것입니다.
3. 오늘날의 불안—예고 없이 닥치는 불안
본문을 볼 때, 헤롯왕이 예수를 해하려 하는 것을 혹자가 예수한테 와서 알려 주었습니다. 그러나 주님은 그 말을 듣고 ‘오늘과 내일 내가 귀신을 쫓아내며 병을 낫게 하다가 제3일에는 나의 일을 완전히 이룰 것이다’라고 답변하셨습니다. ‘오늘날’의 불안이란 이처럼 예고 없이 우리 인생에 찾아오는 불안을 말합니다. 그러나 예수님은 결코 그러한 불안에 당황하지 않았습니다. 오히려 ‘오늘과 내일, 나의 일을 하다가 쓰러져도 나는 제3일에 일어난다!’ 곧, ‘인류의 죄를 다 걸머지고 멸한 다음에 하나님이 기뻐하시는 중에 나는 부활한다’는 사실을 공포한 것입니다. 오늘, 아무리 놀랍고 두려운 사건, 예기치 않은 어려움이 찾아와 여러분의 현재의 지위를 흔든다 할지라도, 3일 안에 모든 문제점을 해결하고 승리한다는 것을 믿으시기 바랍니다.
결론
여러분들에게 물량 부족에서 오는 불안이 있습니까? 믿음으로 심을 때, 생명이 있어 싹이 나고 큰 나무가 되며, 많은 새가 와서 그 가지에 깃들이고 안식하게 됩니다. 고통의 좁은 문이 있을지라도 들어가게 되면 넓은 천국이 기다리고 있습니다. 오늘 예기치 않은 고통이 찾아온다 해도 3일째에 다 해결하는 복된 역사가 있기를 바라겠습니다.
