Jesus' Fervent, Loving Heart Towards the Church, Which is His Wife
God’s most beautiful creation is of course mankind. A flower is beautiful but its just a process of harvesting its fruit; it is not the ultimate destination of creation like mankind is. Therefore a man’s spirit and flesh was created in the most wonderful way. We were created in God’s holy image, thus shaped in the most appropriate way and so we can be called God’s greatest masterpiece (Ps 139-13-14). Then, we can’t help but wonder how this beautiful and precious being was created, and what relationship this being has with God.
I. Man, being created from the dust of the ground, is merely dust.
Man was not created out of any element from heaven, out of the shining stars in the sky, nor silver or gold. God created man, which is the supreme creature of all creation, out of the most trivial and commonplace thing, dust. This shows us that the origin of man is worthless dust. Despite this, the arrogant mankind gloat of their riches. We gloat our health, reputation, and authority. But before anything, we have to realize that our origin is the dust of this earth. If we realize that we are beings created from dust, there is not a person that can put themselves above God. Then what is the reason that God used dust to create us?
First, is so that we live our lives with gratitude towards the grace of God. That we would live with thanksgiving for the fact that through the grace of God, He made us, who are worthless, from the lowest beings into the most precious beings.
Second, is to make us realize that we need the breath of life. God made us a living being by blowing His breath of life into our nostrils (Gen 2:7). ‘Living being’ is a being that is alive. In another words, man received God’s holy spirit and so unlike animals, we were made into living human beings, having received God’s personality and spirit. Therefore it is only when we live according to the Word of God, we are operating truly as human beings.
God provided His possession, which was His greatest garden, Eden to Adam. And He pitied his loneliness and created Eve out of Adam’s rib. Creating her out of his rib, not his head nor foot, signifies that she was to be an equal. He created her out of the rib that is adjacent to the heart so that she would receive the protection and love from the man.
II. The relationship between Christ and the church, His wife
In 1 Cor 15:45-49, Apostle Paul compares the first Adam and second Adam, Jesus Christ. First Adam had his wife Eve, and they united, became one body, and loved each other with all their lives. Who then, is Christ’s, or second Adam’s, wife? It is the church that is Jesus’ wife. First Adam’s wife was created with a part of his body, but for Jesus, He spilt all His blood on the cross to create His wife, the church. Jesus loved the church so much so that He gave His life and blood for it. Therefore, loving Jesus is to love what He loved – loving the church. So then, how do we love the church, which is Jesus’ wife? (Eph 5:25-28)
First, you must love church as you do your own life. Eph 5:25 states, “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her”. So like the scripture states, Jesus loved the church to the point that He would give Himself up for her. And likewise, we, who love Jesus, must fervently love the church, Jesus’ wife. Having joy, sadness, concern, care along with the church is a testimony that you love church. Apostle Paul confesses that though he may be in hunger, thirst, hardship, and labor, but the church must not go through these things (2 Cor 11:27-28)? One that can be like the first Adam, who was willing to be with his wife till death, is one who loves the church as he does his own life.
Second, you must carry a burden for the sake of the church. The husband has a burden to bear for his family. A sound husband bears the spiritual, mental, physical burdens. Apostle Paul says in Col 1:24, “Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I do my share on behalf of His body, which is the church, in filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions.” There are various burdens within church. Those who bear these burdens as their own are ones who fervently love the church.
Third, you must give all your interest to the church. Jesus’ interest was in His wife, the church. Therefore those who love the church are those that fervently love Jesus. They will receive Jesus’ love. Those that enrich the church are saints that have experienced the enrichment through Jesus’ blessing. Those who take part in the suffering of the church receive Jesus’ comfort and will always live under His grace. Those that protect the church in all circumstances will receive Jesus’ absolute protection.
Conclusion
God gives the blessing of ‘prosperity’ to those who love the church (Ps 122:6-9). Like the confession of the writer of Psalm – “Those who love Jerusalem will prosper” – when you love the church, which is the body of the LORD, you will receive the blessing of prosperity and peace. Church is like the heart of a mother that likens Jesus’ living stream as the wellspring, so those who love the church will be given the blessing of prosperity.
예수님의 신부인 교회를 뜨겁게 사랑하는 마음
하나님께서 창조하신 피조물 중에 가장 아름다운 것은 역시 사람입니다. 꽃이 아름답다 하나 그것은 열매를 얻기 위한 과정일 뿐, 사람처럼 피조물의 최종 목적은 아닙니다. 그러므로 인간의 영혼은 물론이거니와 육신도 가장 우아하고 품위 있게 창조되었습니다. 즉, 하나님의 거룩한 형상을 닮고 있기에 가장 적절한 모양으로 만들어진 하나님의 최대의 걸작품이라 할 수 있습니다(시 139:13-14). 그러면 이토록 아름답고 귀한 존재인 인간이 어떻게 만들어졌으며, 창조하신 하나님과 어떠한 관계에 있는지 생각해 보지 않을 수 없습니다.
1. 인간은 흙으로 만들어진 존재로서 먼지에 불과합니다.
인간은 천국의 빛나는 물질로도, 반짝이는 하늘의 별이나 은금 보화로도 만들어지지 않았습니다. 만물의 영장인 사람을 하나님은 가장 흔하고 보잘것없는 흙으로 만드셨습니다. 이것은 본래 인간의 근원이 보잘것없는 땅의 티끌이며 먼지에 불과하다는 점을 여실히 보여 주고 있습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 교만한 인간은 자신의 부함을 자랑합니다. 건강과 명예와 권세를 자랑합니다. 그러나 그 이전에, 모든 인간은 자신의 근본이 흙에서 왔다는 사실을 깊이 깨달아야 합니다. 빈부귀천을 막론하고 먼지로 되어 있으며 또 먼지로 돌아갈 존재임을 깨닫는다면, 그 누구도 하나님 앞에서 자신을 스스로 높일 수가 없습니다. 그러면 하나님께서 우리를 흙으로 창조하신 이유는 무엇일까요?
첫째는, 하나님의 은총에 감사하며 살도록 하기 위해서입니다. 보잘것없는 자신을 하나님께서 당신의 은총으로 가장 천한 상태에서 가장 고귀한 존재로 변화시켜 주신 데 대해 감사, 감격하며 살아가도록 하기 위함입니다.
둘째로, 우리 인간에는 반드시 생기가 필요하다는 사실을 깨우쳐 주기 위해서입니다. 흙으로 된 인간의 코에 하나님께서 친히 생기를 불어넣어 주셔서 인간은 비로소 생령이 됐습니다(창 2:7). ‘생령’이란 산 존재를 의미합니다. 다시 말하면 인간은 하나님의 성령을 받음으로, 하등 동물과 달리 하나님의 성품, 하나님의 마음을 부여받은 영혼을 가진 생명 있는 인격체가 되는 것입니다. 그러므로 하나님의 말씀과 뜻을 따라 살 때만, 인간은 진정한 인간의 삶을 영위할 수 있습니다.
하나님은 당신의 소유인 지상 최고의 동산 에덴을 인간 아담을 위해 기꺼이 제공해 주셨습니다. 그리고 사람의 독처함을 안타깝게 여기셔서 배필을 주셨으니, 그가 아담의 갈비뼈로 만든 하와인 것입니다. 남자의 머리나 발로 만들지 않고 옆구리의 뼈를 뽑아 만들었다는 것은 그와 동등하게 되기 위한 것입니다. 남자의 보호, 남자의 사랑을 받기 위해 심장 부근에서 취한 갈빗대로 여자를 만드셨습니다.
2. 그리스도와 그의 신부인 교회의 관계
사도 바울은 고전 15:45-49에서 첫째 아담과 둘째 아담이신 그리스도를 비교하고 있습니다. 첫째 아담에겐 신부 되는 하와가 있었고, 둘이 연합하여 한 몸을 이루는 가운데 생명을 다한 사랑이 있었습니다. 그렇다면 둘째 아담이신 그리스도의 신부는 누구입니까? 바로 교회가 예수님의 신부입니다. 첫 아담의 신부는 아담의 신체 일부로 만들었지만, 예수님은 십자가 상에서 물과 피를 다 쏟으심으로 그의 신부인 교회를 낳으셨던 것입니다. 예수님은 교회를 위해 생명과 피를 바칠 만큼 신부인 교회를 사랑했습니다. 그러므로 예수님을 사랑하는 구체적인 표현은 예수님의 사랑의 대상이었던 교회를 사랑하는 것입니다. 그러면 예수님의 신부 된 교회를 어떻게 사랑해야 할까요?(엡 5:25-28)
첫째는, 자기 생명처럼 교회를 사랑해야 합니다. 엡 5:25 말씀을 볼 때, “남편들아 아내 사랑하기를 그리스도께서 교회를 사랑하시고 위하여 자신을 주심같이 하라” 하였습니다. 이 말씀처럼 예수님께서는 자기 전체를 드리시기까지 교회를 사랑하셨습니다. 마찬가지로, 예수님을 사랑하는 우리는 예수님의 신부인 교회를 뜨겁게 사랑해야 합니다. 교회와 더불어 웃고 울고 고민하고 염려할 줄 아는 것이 바로 교회를 사랑하고 있는 증거입니다. 사도 바울도 자기 몸이 춥고 굶주리고 헐벗었으나 교회만은 춥고 굶주리고 헐벗어서는 안 된다고 고백하고 있지 않습니까(고후 11:27-28)? 첫 아담처럼 자기 아내와 죽는 자리에도 같이 내려갈 줄 아는 자가 자기 생명처럼 교회를 사랑하는 자입니다.
둘째는, 교회는 위하여 짐을 져야 합니다. 가정에서 남편이 져야 할 짐이 있습니다. 건전한 남편이라면 신앙적·정신적·물질적 짐을 짊어집니다. 골 1:24에서 사도 바울은 “그리스도의 남은 고난을 그의 몸 된 교회를 위하여 내 육체에 채우노라”라고 하였습니다. 교회 안에는 여러 가지 모양의 짐들이 많습니다. 이를 자신의 부분으로 여겨 짐을 지는 자가 교회를 뜨겁게 사랑하는 자입니다.
셋째는, 모든 관심을 예수님의 신부인 교회에 쏟아붓는 것입니다. 예수님의 관심사는 자신의 신부인 교회에 집중되고 있습니다. 그러므로 교회를 사랑하는 자는 예수님을 뜨겁게 사랑하는 자입니다. 예수님의 사랑을 받게 됩니다. 교회를 부요케 하는 자는 예수님의 축복의 부요를 체험한 성도가 됩니다. 교회의 고난에 동참하는 자는 예수님의 위로를 받고, 항상 은혜 가운데 살아가게 될 것입니다. 어떤 상황이라도 교회를 지키고 보호하는 자는 예수님의 절대 보호를 받게 됩니다.
결론
교회를 사랑하는 자에게 주시는 하나님이 축복은 ‘형통’입니다(시 122:6-9). “예루살렘을 사랑하는 자는 형통하리로다” 한 시편 기자의 고백처럼, 주의 몸 된 교회를 사랑할 때 형통과 평강의 축복이 주어집니다. 교회는 예수님의 생명 샘을 원천으로 삼는 어머니의 가슴과도 같기에, 교회를 사랑하는 자에게는 만사형통의 축복이 주어집니다.
