Which Side Are We On?
It is already the 5th Lord’s Day of this year. Through today’s Scripture text, I would like to share grace with a title ‘Am I on Abraham’s side or on Lot’s side?’ And ‘which side are we on as a church?’
I. Abraham who had a rich heart and Lot who occupied the fertile land
The herders of Abraham’s flocks and the herders of his nephew Lot’s flocks quarreled with each other as their possessions increased. Abraham allowed Lot to choose the land first (Gen 13:6-9). That is when his nephew Lot chose the land of Sodom and Gomorrah. He chose this very fertile land that was recorded as the “land like the Garden of Eden, like the land of Egypt” because this was before God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah (Gen 13:10). However, that land is the land where only the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life exist (1Jn 2:15-17). What is left for Abraham is a rough wasteland, insignificant and barren in man’s eyes. It seems useless in the eyes of the flesh. However, I would like all of you to believe that a true man of God and the one who obeys the will of God will dwell forever with God. We see from the Scripture text that 3 angels visited Abraham. The angels knew all about it. Abraham certainly was a man of faith who lived with the purpose of life in man and also with the values of faith. However, Lot did not even have a thankful heart for his uncle who took him when he left Ur of the Chaldeans when commanded by God, whom he lived together in the same house with the same faith. Abraham’s life was for living whereas Lot’s life was for death.
II. Abraham and Lot differed in worship, thanksgiving, and faith.
1) Abraham built an altar to the LORD and worshipped Him under the great trees of Mamre. He worshipped God 3 times, praised Him, and pleaded with Him through prayers (Gen 12:5-6, 13:18). Wouldn’t God go there? God came to the place of worship (Ps 25:14, Amos 3:7). There was no worship before God even though Lot saw that. How could there be prayers, praises, thanksgiving, or offering sacrifices when there was no worship? We are very generous toward our spouse and children but very stingy toward God whom we cannot see. A man may not remember the place where he offered worship, but God remembers everything. God remembers who and where he knelt down and prayed to Him (Ps 139:1-4). It was not by coincidence that God came to Abraham, the forefather of faith. A worship is evidence of reverence for God. The purpose that we live on this earth is to worship God. We exist to glorify God (Isa 43:7). When we offer worship at home, God will come to our home. I would like all of you to believe that if you come and pray in a church that God has designated, He will surely come to you to answer your prayers. The place where we prayed to God in the name of Jesus Christ is the holy land. It is the land that God remembers, and it is the land of revelation. However, God did not appear to Lot who occupied the rich and fertile land but had no worship. There was no rearing of children in faith (Gen 18:18-19). Weren’t the nations of Ammon and Moab born because there was no rearing of children in faith (Gen 19:37-38)? Abraham truly lived in the bright light, living a rewarding and shameless life, but Lot wandered in the darkness. His life itself left God, and it was a life of darkness that God did not acknowledge. There was no worship, no thanksgiving, no praises, and no prayers, and seems as if meeting the angel of death.
2) Abraham and Lot also had a difference in their heart of hospitality. First, Abraham humbly greeted 3 men, then he hurried to meet them and bowed low to the ground (Gen 18:2-). He brought water to wash their feet and set before them some curds, milk and the calf that had been prepared. These are the finest foods served to noble guests in the wilderness of the old Palestine region. The image of Abraham rushing to greet the travelers show that his heart was genuine with a joyful heart to serve as if he was serving God. He effectively used the short time that he was allotted with. He did his best to serve them as if he was serving God. There is speed to take care of an incident. The Word of God is ‘immediate.’ We can see the believers joyfully and happily trust in the Word and quickly handle the matter and act on it. An amount does not matter when showing sincerity. It is giving the best of what you have. It is in essence an expression of love. In short, while Abraham served them wholeheartedly like he was serving God (Heb 13:1-2), Lot just maintained his dignity by providing 2 or 3 loaves of unleavened bread (Gen 19:3). Even so, Lot was not a poor man. However, we see a big difference in how Abraham and Lot served the angels who came to their house to bless them.
3) Moreover, there was a difference in their heart of faith. The people of the city of Sodom were busy with business, making money, success, and advancement that they were not very interested in educating their children. Why would you not prepare for a house of God that you are going to go later? They did not prepare for their soul. However, Abraham looked upon the eternal city (Heb 11:13). The children should not be raised with money but with the grace of God while giving thanks. We need to rear our children with the Word of God.
4) Lastly, there was a difference in their life of prayers. Abraham sincerely prayed, ‘Though I am nothing but dust, I humbly ask you!’ (Gen 18:27,30,31,32).The difference of faith between Abraham and Lot was as far apart as earth from the heavens.
Conclusion
Which side are we on? It is stated that Abraham is a friend of God (2Chr 20:7). I sincerely pray and bless everyone in the name of the Lord that we too will stand on the side of Abraham and become a friend of God so that our life will be overflowing with thanksgiving, prayers, and grace in everything we do; and the sound of reading the Scripture and serving the church will overflow so that the amazing work of loving our neighbors as our flesh be upon our homes and in our entire church until we enter the kingdom of God.
우리는 어느 편에 속해 있느냐
금년 들어서 벌써 다섯 번째 주일을 맞이하고 있습니다. 본문 말씀을 통해서, ‘나는 아브라함의 편이냐? 롯의 편이냐?’ 우리교회 전체를 합해서 “우리는 어느 편에 속해 있느냐” 하는 제목으로 함께 은혜 나누기를 원합니다.
1. 마음이 풍요로운 아브라함과 풍요로운 땅을 차지한 롯
아브라함의 가축의 목자와, 조카 롯의 가축의 목자들이 그들의 소유가 많아지므로 서로 다투게 되었습니다. 아브라함은 롯에게 먼저 땅을 선택하게 했습니다(창 13:6-9). 그때 조카 롯은 소돔과 고모라 땅을 택했습니다. 멸망 직전에 ‘소돔과 고모라가 에덴동산과 같고, 애굽 땅과 같았다’고 기록될 정도로 아주 풍요로운 땅을 선택했습니다(창 13:10). 그러나 그 땅은 육신의 정욕과 안목의 정욕, 이생의 자랑만이 있는 땅입니다(요일 2:15-17). 아브라함에게 남은 땅은 거친 황무지, 보잘것없고 사람의 생각으로 봐도 불모의 땅입니다. 육신의 눈으로 볼 때는 쓸모없는 땅입니다. 그러나 진정한 하나님의 사람, 하나님의 뜻을 행하는 사람은 영원히 하나님과 함께 거한다는 것을 믿으시기 바랍니다. 본문 말씀 볼 때, 세 천사가 아브라함을 방문했습니다. 천사들은 그 내용을 다 알고 있습니다. 아브라함은 확실히, 인간 속에 삶의 목적과 신앙적 가치관을 가지고 산 신앙의 사람이었습니다. 그러나 롯은 갈대아 우르에서 하나님의 명령을 받고 떠나온, 같은 신앙 가지고 같은 집에 살았던 삼촌에 대한 고마운 마음조차 없습니다. 아브라함의 일생은 생을 위한 삶이었지만, 롯의 일생은 죽음을 위한 삶이었습니다.
2. 아브라함과 롯은 예배와 감사, 신앙 중심에 차이가 있었습니다.
1) 아브라함은 마므레 상수리나무 밑에서 하나님 앞에 제단 쌓고 예배드렸습니다. 세 번씩이나 예배드리고, 찬양하고, 하나님께 기도로 부탁했습니다(창 12:5-6, 13:18). 그러니, 하나님께서 그 장소에 찾아오시지 않겠습니까? 예배드린 그곳에 오셨습니다(시 25:14, 암 3:7). 그것을 보고도 롯은 하나님 앞에 예배가 없었습니다. 예배가 없는데 무슨 기도가 있고, 찬송이 있고, 감사가 있고, 거기 무슨 제물을 바치겠습니까? 자기 아내, 자식 위해서는 아낌없이 쓰지만, 눈에 보이지 않는 하나님 앞에는 아주 인색합니다.
여러분들이 예배드리는 그 장소–사람은 기억 안 하지만 하나님은 다 기억하고 계십니다. 누가 어느 장소에서 엎드려 기도한 것을 하나님은 기억하십니다(시 139:1-4). 하나님이 믿음의 조상 아브라함에게 우연히 찾아오신 것이 아닙니다. 예배는 하나님을 경외하는 증거입니다. 우리가 이 세상에서 사는 목적이 하나님께 예배하는 것입니다. 하나님께 영광 돌리기 위해서 우리가 존재하는 것입니다(사 43:7). 여러분 가정에서 가정 제단 쌓으면 하나님께서 가정 제단에 찾아오십니다. 하나님이 지정하신 교회에 와서 기도하면, 반드시 하나님께서 여러분들에게 소원대로 응답해 주기 위해서 찾아오신다는 것을 믿으시기 바랍니다. 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 하나님 앞에 기도한 그 장소가 거룩한 땅입니다. 하나님이 기억하시는 땅, 계시의 땅입니다.
그러나 옥토, 기름진 땅을 차지한 롯에게는 예배도 없고, 하나님이 나타나시지도 않았습니다. 신앙으로 자녀를 교육하는 것도 없습니다(창 18:18-19). 신앙으로 교육하지 못했기 때문에 암몬과 모압 나라가 태어난 것이 아닙니까(창 19:37-38)?
아브라함은 밝은 빛 속에서 부끄러움이 없고, 정말 보람 있는 생활을 살고 있었지만, 롯은 어둠 속에서 헤맵니다. 생활 자체가 하나님을 떠났고, 하나님이 인정하지 않는, 빛이 없는 생활입니다. 예배가 없고, 감사가 없고, 찬송이 없고, 기도가 없고, 피차에 사자를 만나는 것 같습니다.
2) 또 아브라함과 롯은 대접하는 마음에 차이가 있었었습니다. 아브라함은 우선 겸손하게 세 사람을 맞이했고, 뛰어나가서 땅에 엎드려서 청했습니다(창 18:2-). 발 씻을 물까지 다 대령하고, 버터와 우유와 하인이 요리한 송아지를 가져다가 그들의 앞에 진설하였습니다. 이것들은 옛날 팔레스타인 광야에서 귀빈에게 내놓는 최상의 음식입니다. 아브라함이 나그네 대접을 위해 급히 뛰어다니는 모습은, 그 마음이 진실하고, 정말 하나님 대접할 때 기뻐하는 행동으로 실천하는 것이었습니다. 자기에게 주신 짧은 시간을 최대한 이용했습니다. 사람에게 하나님 대접하듯 최선을 다했습니다. 어떤 사건을 처리하는 속도가 빠릅니다. 하나님 말씀은 ‘곧’입니다. 기쁘고 즐거운 마음으로 믿고, 신속하게 일 처리함과 행동함을 볼 수가 있습니다. 정성이란 물질의 많고 적음의 문제가 아닙니다. 자기가 가진 최고의 성의입니다. 곧 사랑을 표시하는 것입니다.
한마디로 아브라함은 정성을 다해서 하나님같이 대접(히 13:1-2)했지만, 롯은 누룩 섞지 않은 무교병 두세 개로 체면을 유지한 것입니다(창 19:3). 그렇다고 해서, 롯이 가난한 사람이 아닙니다. 그러나 자기 집에 찾아와서 축복해 주는 천사들을 대접하는 아브라함과 롯을 볼 때, 너무나 큰 차이가 있습니다.
3) 또한, 신앙의 중심에 차이가 있었습니다. 소돔성 사람들은 사업과 돈벌이, 성공과 출세에 바빠서 자녀들 교육에 별 관심이 없었습니다. 장차 자기가 갈 하나님의 집을 왜 준비 안 합니까? 자기 영혼에 대해서 준비하지 않았습니다. 그러나 아브라함은 영원한 도성을 바라봤습니다(히 11:13). 자식은 돈으로 키우는 것이 아니라 하나님의 은혜로, 감사하면서 키워야 합니다. 하나님의 말씀으로 내 자식을 양육해야 합니다.
4) 마지막으로, 기도 생활에 차이가 있었습니다. 아브라함은 ‘하나님, 티끌과 같은 나라도 감히 주께 고하나이다!’ 하는 간절한 기도가 있었습니다(창 18:27,30,31,32).
아브라함과 롯의 신앙 차이는 하늘과 땅 차이입니다.
결론
우리는 어느 편입니까? 아브라함은 하나님의 친구(대하 20:7)라고 말씀합니다. 우리도 아브라함의 편에 서서 하나님의 친구가 되어, 그 나라 갈 때까지 모든 생활에 감사가 차고 넘치고, 기도가 차고 넘치고, 은혜가 차고 넘치고, 성경 읽는 소리, 교회 봉사도 차고 넘치고, 내 몸같이 이웃을 사랑하는 놀라운 역사가 여러분 가정과 우리교회 전체에 있기를 주의 이름으로 축원하겠습니다.
