Let Us Live a Life Overflowing with Gratitude
Christianity, in short, is a religion of gratitude. That is why the Psalmist said, “Sacrifice thank offerings to God” (Ps 50:14). Hence, we must stand firmly in our faith and live a life overflowing with thankfulness (Col 2:7). It is because it is God’s will for us to always rejoice, pray continually, and give thanks in all circumstances (1Thes 5:16-18). My beloved saints, the Lord was thankful even though he knew that he would surely die. God will not accept a worship without thankfulness. God is glorified when we worship Him with true thankfulness (Ps 50:23).
I. Those who offer thank offerings acknowledge God’s Sovereignty.
Thankfulness denotes the acknowledgement of God as our Creator and His Sovereignty. That Sovereign God has called us (Ps 50:1). We must be thankful at the fact that God remembered and called us. How can we not be thankful to the calling of the Sovereign God who created and provided the heavens and earth when we are thankful when a man calls us? My beloved saints, the object of worship that is worthy to receive our gratitude is only our God who controls our life, death, wrath and blessing who is the Lord of history. The confession of faith is also possible when there is thankfulness. When we realize and be grateful at the fact that God has created and dominated everything in the universe and that He oversees the history, we will be able to profess our faith before our Sovereign God. Thus, we must be thankful at the fact that our life, the success and failure of our nation and the destiny of entire mankind are in God’s hands. The Apostle Paul thanked God as he was beaten, stoned, naked, and starved. The gratitude of the Apostle Paul is in short, a powerful thanksgiving with authority and strength. My beloved saints, the gratitude is the Christians’ response to God for His love and grace. Paul said, “Thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1Cor 15:57). The Apostle Paul was thankful because he received the power of resurrection that defeats death and the grace to overcome death from the Lord. The Apostle Paul truly dwelled in Jesus. We have to live such life. My beloved saints, we must completely prepare in faith before the tribulations come. That is how we will be able to win. The Apostle Paul thanked God as he marched toward death and as he shouted at those who tried to kill him. Do you think his life mattered when he thought about the eternal life that God provided him with? We belong to the Lord whether we live or die (Rom 14:7-8).
II. The overflowing thankfulness is the power to overcome death.
The adversaries of Daniel knew that Daniel completely obeyed the Law, so they issued an edict, enforced the decree that stated, ‘If anyone prays to any god except to the king shall be thrown into the lions’ den,’ put it in writing and signed it off with a signet ring in order to kill Daniel. Even though Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went to a room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem, got down on his knees and prayed 3 times a day, gave thanks to God, just as he had done before (Dan 6:1-10). Hence, Daniel is thrown into the lions’ den for violating the decree. However, God sent His angel to protect Daniel by shutting the mouths of the lions so they would not hurt him (Dan 6:11-23). God has protected the body of Daniel who thanked Him and relied only on Him so that it would not be harmed. My beloved saints, Daniel’s true gratitude was the gratitude that overcame death. Daniel did not deviate even an inch from his faith to trust God. The heart of God and Daniel’s heart were in sync without any discrepancies. Daniel’s unwavering faith to ‘give thanks to God and to pray to God even if I die,’ and his firm belief that ‘God is my only object of prayer’ are truly amazing. My beloved saints, as you can see, the thankfulness has a strong power. I would like all of you to give thanks to God. No one can take away the thanksgiving we offered to God.
III. Thankfulness is the power to defeat enemies.
“The Atomic Bomb of Love” is a book about the Rev. Yang-Won Son of Korea who lost his 2 sons (Dong-In, Dong-Shin) to the communist mob. The Rev. Yang-Won Son who lost his two sons thanked God at his sons’ funeral. First, thank you God for allowing a martyr to be born through a sinner like me. Second, thank you God for entrusting these precious children to me amongst many saints. Third, thank you God for allowing me to offer my firstborn and the second born sons, the most beautiful 2 of my 6 children, 3 sons and 3 daughters. Fourth, how precious is the martyrdom of my 2 sons when the martyrdom of 1 son is precious? Thank you, God. Fifth, it is a blessing to enjoy the days of life and die while believing in Jesus, and thank you, God for allowing them to die a martyr while evangelizing. Sixth, they have been preparing to go to the United States, but thank you, God for allowing them to go to a better place, the Kingdom of God. Seventh, thank you God for your grace for giving me a heart to love the killer of my sons to make him repent and adopt him as my son. The great Rev. Yang-Won Son forgave the enemy who shot and killed his 2 sons, adopted him as his son, sent him to school to finish his education. Would this be possible if he did not live his daily life with thankfulness? Thankfulness cannot appear all of a sudden. There is certainly a great force behind this. Indeed, it is Rev. Yang-Won Son who received the faith of Jesus who was thankful as he faced the cross, his spirits and his thoughts. I sincerely hope that this year of 2022 will be the year of victory overflowing with thankfulness no matter what challenges and tribulations may come upon us the saints.
감사가 차고 넘치는 삶을 살자
기독교는 한마디로 감사의 종교입니다. 그래서 시편 기자는 감사로 하나님께 제사를 드리라고 했습니다(시 50:14). 그러므로 우리는 믿음에 굳게 서서 감사가 넘치는 삶을 살아야 합니다(골 2:7). 왜냐하면, 항상 기뻐하고, 쉬지 말고 기도하면서, 범사에 감사하는 것이 하나님의 뜻이기 때문입니다(살전 5:16-18). 성도 여러분, 주님은 죽을 줄 뻔히 아시면서도 감사하셨습니다. 감사가 없으면 하나님께서 예배를 받지 않으십니다. 진정으로 감사로 예배할 때 하나님을 영화롭게 하는 것입니다(시 50:23).
1. 감사로 제사 드리는 자는 하나님의 주권을 인정하는 것입니다.
감사는 하나님이 창조주 되심과 그분의 주권을 인정하는 것입니다. 그 주권의 하나님이 우리를 부르셨습니다(시 50:1). 나를 기억하고 부르셨다는 사실 앞에 우리는 감사해야 합니다. 사람이 불러 줘도 고마운데, 하물며 천지를 창조하시고 섭리하시는 주권의 하나님이 부르셨는데 어찌 감사하지 않을 수 있겠습니까? 성도 여러분, 우리의 감사를 받으실 예배의 대상은, 오직 인간의 생사화복을 주장하시고 역사의 주가 되시는 하나님 한 분뿐입니다. 신앙고백도 감사가 있을 때 가능합니다. 하나님이 우주 만물을 창조하시고 지배하고 계시며, 역사를 주관하신다는 사실을 깨닫고 감사할 때, 주권적인 하나님 앞에 신앙을 고백할 수 있게 됩니다. 그러므로 우리는 나의 생명과 나라의 흥망과 인류 전체의 운명이 하나님께 달려 있다는 사실 앞에 감사해야 합니다. 사도 바울은 매를 맞고, 돌에 맞아 터지고, 헐벗고, 굶주리면서도 하나님 앞에 감사했습니다. 사도 바울의 감사는 한마디로 힘 있는 감사, 권세와 능력이 있는 감사입니다.
성도 여러분, 감사는 하나님의 사랑과 은혜에 대한 그리스도인들의 응답입니다. 바울은 우리 주 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 이김을 주시는 하나님께 감사한다고 했습니다(고전 15:57). 사도 바울은 사망을 이기는 부활의 힘, 죽음을 이기는 은총을 주님으로부터 받았기 때문에 감사한 것입니다. 사도 바울은 참으로 예수 안에서 산 사람이었습니다. 우리도 그러한 삶을 살아야 합니다.
사랑하는 성도 여러분, 환난이 오기 전에 완벽하게 신앙으로 준비해야 합니다. 그래야 이길 수 있습니다. 사도 바울은 사망을 향해 나가면서, 죽이겠다는 사람들 앞에 호령해 가면서 감사했습니다. 하나님이 베푸신 영원한 생명을 생각할 때, 그 목숨이 문제입니까? 우리는 사나 죽으나 주의 것입니다(롬 14:7-8).
2. 차고 넘치는 감사는 죽음을 이기는 능력입니다.
다니엘의 대적들이 다니엘이 율법에 철두철미한 것을 알고, 다니엘을 죽이기 위해 ‘왕 외에 다른 신들에게 무엇을 구하면 사자 굴에 던져 넣는다’는 금령을 만들고, 조서에 어인을 찍어 금령을 내립니다. 다니엘은 이 조서에 어인이 찍힌 것을 알고도 전에 하던 대로, 예루살렘을 향하여 열린 창에서 하루에 세 번씩 무릎을 꿇고 하나님께 감사하며 기도를 드렸습니다(단 6:1-10). 이에 다니엘은 금령을 어긴 죄목으로 사자 굴에 던져집니다. 그러나 하나님은 천사를 보내 사자의 입을 막아, 다니엘을 해하지 못하도록 지켜 주셨습니다(단 6:11-23). 하나님은, 감사하며 하나님만을 의뢰하는 다니엘의 몸이 조금도 상하지 않도록 지켜 주신 것입니다.
사랑하는 성도 여러분, 다니엘의 진정한 감사는 죽음을 이기는 감사였습니다. 다니엘은 하나님을 믿는 신앙에서 한 치도 어긋남이 없었습니다. 한 치의 어긋남이 없이, 하나님의 마음과 다니엘의 마음이 딱 맞았습니다. 다니엘의 ‘죽어도 하나님 앞에 감사하고 기도하겠다’는 초지일관하는 의지, ‘나의 기도 대상은 하나님밖에 없다’는 굳은 믿음은 정말 대단합니다. 성도 여러분, 이렇게 감사는 강한 힘을 가진 것입니다. 하나님 앞에 감사하기 바랍니다. 하나님 앞에 드린 감사는 그 누구도 가져가지 못합니다.
3. 감사는 원수를 이기는 힘입니다.
‘사랑의 원자탄’의 주인공 손양원 목사는 공산 폭도들에게 두 아들(동인, 동신)을 모두 잃었습니다. 두 아들을 잃은 손양원 목사님은 아들의 장례식에서 하나님 앞에 이렇게 감사했습니다. 첫째, 나 같은 죄인의 혈통에서 순교자 자식이 나게 하신 것, 감사합니다. 둘째, 허다한 많은 성도 중에 이런 보배를 나에게 맡겨 주신 것, 감사합니다. 셋째, 3남 3녀 중에서 가장 아름다운 두 아들 장자와 차자를 바치게 된 것, 하나님 앞에 감사합니다. 넷째, 한 아들의 순교도 귀하다 하거늘 하물며 두 아들의 순교이겠습니까? 하나님, 감사합니다. 다섯째, 예수 믿다가 제 명대로 살다가 죽는 것도 축복이라 하겠거든, 하물며 전도하다가 순교한 것, 감사합니다. 여섯째, 미국 가려고 준비 다 했는데, 미국보다 더 좋은 하나님 나라 가게 된 것, 감사합니다. 일곱째, 두 아들 죽인 원수를 사랑하여 회개시켜 내 아들을 삼고자 하는 마음 주신 은혜, 감사합니다.
두 아들을 총으로 쏘아 죽인 원수를 용서하며 양자로 삼아 학교를 보내고 공부를 마치게 하는 그 위대한 손양원 목사. 평상시에 감사 생활 하지 않았다면 이게 될까요? 갑자기 감사가 나올 수는 없습니다. 실로 무서운 힘이 아닐 수 없습니다. 바로 십자가 앞에서 감사하던 예수의 신앙, 예수의 정신, 예수의 사상을 받은 분이 손양원 목사님입니다. 우리 성도들은 2022년도 한 해에 어떠한 어려움과 시련이 닥쳐 온다 할지라도 감사가 차고 넘치는 승리의 한 해가 되기를 바랍니다.
