God Who Blessed on the New Works in This New Year
This hopeful new year of 2022, the unknown world that our Living God has given to us as gift is opening widely before our eyes with infinite possibilities. On this first day of hopeful New Year, God is telling us that He will “do a new thing.” This is the Word of blessing that God gave to the Israelites while they were taken to Babylon and were in peak of despair. As a result of their violation of not observing the Sabbaths and Sabbath years as well as the embezzlement of tithes, God used Babylon to punish the Israelites for 70 years according to their years of violation. During their captivities, everything was vain even though they have tried so hard in their own ways. Thus, God spoke to them, “Forget the former things. I am doing a new thing!” when the entire Israelites were collapsed with desperate hearts.
I. Forget the former things
God is clearly telling us to “forget the former things” in v18 of today’s Scripture text. This is the secret to receive the blessing of new work that God is going to execute. When God encouraged them to “forget the former thing,” it contained the forgiveness of the past and emptiness in hearts. On the day that Jesus was arrested on Mt. Gethsemane, Peter drew out a sword and struck Malchus, the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. This was his act of revenge and the protest against their atrocious act toward his teacher. However, our Lord said, “No more of this!” and picked up his ear that was fallen on the ground and healed him. Isn’t this truly in essence our Lord’s act of forgiveness when he said, “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart” in Mt 18:35? God also proclaimed the gospel of forgiveness to the mankind through the name, “Manasseh” in the Old Testament. 13 years after he was sold by his brothers and came all the way to Egypt, Joseph became the Prime Minister and begot a son. Joseph named that son “Manasseh.” It is because he believed that God has made him to “forget all his trouble and all his father’s household” (Gen 41:50). As a result, Joseph became a ‘man of forgiveness’ who could truly forgive his brothers who sold him. Likewise, those who forget the past and forgive will receive the blessing of new work that God will perform. Moreover, we must have an empty heart. We cannot dwell on the failure of the past as well as the success of the past. Like a foolish rich man who appears in Lk 12, whose possession will it become that you have prepared all along if God takes away your spirit because you were satisfied with your success and boast about it? (Lk 12:20-21). Isn’t this an image of a foolish man who was not generous for God but stored lots of wealth for himself? Like the Apostle Paul who confessed, “Forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal…” (Php 3:13-14), I sincerely hope that in this hopeful New Year of 2022, we will unbind the failures of the past, disappointments and the enemies with forgiveness and march toward God with empty hearts.
II. Blow the trumpet made of ram’s horn.
The most notable custom during the observance of Jewish New Year is that they blow a trumpet made of ram’s horn and announced the beginning of the New Year. They used a trumpet made of silver during the wilderness journey, but only the trumpet made of ram’s horn was allowed to be used during the New Year’s celebration. There is an origin for this custom. When Abraham offered his son Isaac whom he had begotten in latter years of his life, God saw sincerity in his heart and prepared a ram instead of Isaac. This denotes that God will provide us with the blessing of “Jehovah Jireh” when we are about to offer all of our most precious things in our lives like how the ram was prepared when Abraham was about to offer his only son Isaac. That is why the Israelites would blow the trumpet made of ram’s horn on every New Year to reflect back on God’s love and His blessings that were prepared in advance for them and also on the faith of Abraham, the forefather of Faith. Moreover, as they blew the trumpet made of ram’s horn, they repented on the sins that they had committed knowingly and unknowingly, unbind the miscommunications and disharmony between the neighbors and forgave them (Mic 2:10). Hence, as we welcome this New Year of 2022, we must blow the trumpet made of ram’s horn with our faith so that we can enjoy the blessing that God has prepared for us in advance.
III. Trust in the promise of God
God gives the promise to us first. When a man believes in that promise, God will bless him according to His promise. However, people only demand the blessings of the “present” from God. This is the difference between man and God. The promise of God is for the future and not for the present. However, God is not telling us to “endure it for a long time” but to “pull the promise of the future with faith.” This is identical to Abraham who believed in the promise that God will make his descendants as numerous as the sand of the sea and the stars in the sky, and pulled it to the present in faith even though he was not able to have children when he received his calling at the age of 75. In believing the promise of God, Abraham’s faith was never weakened (Rom 4:19). God is telling us also in today’s Scripture text that He will do a new thing, making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. What this means is that in this New Year of 2022, God will make a way to success although our family, work, business and especially the life of faith were all blocked last year; so that He will bless us with the blessing that all of us will arrive in the Haven of Hope that we desire for (Ps 107:27-30).
Conclusion:
My beloved saints! I would like all of you to forget the painful things of the year 2021. Hopeful new morning of 2022 is shining in our individual hearts. “Our barns will be filled with every kind of provision and food” (Ps 144:13). Even though we are not worthy, God selected us and created us so that we can praise Him to glorify Him (Isa 43:12, 21, 1Cor 10:31-33). Throughout this year, I would like all of you to trust in this great promise of the blessing and march confidently to God.
금년 한 해 새 일에 축복하신 하나님
살아 계신 하나님께서 선물로 주신 대망의 2022년, 미지의 세계가 무한한 가능성을 가지고 우리 앞에 활짝 펼쳐져 있습니다. 이 희망찬 새해 첫날에 하나님께서는 우리에게 ‘새 일을 행하겠다’ 하십니다. 이스라엘 백성이 바벨론에 잡혀가서 절망의 절정에 빠져 있을 때에 주신 축복의 말씀입니다.
안식일과 안식년을 범하고, 십일조를 떼어먹은 결과로, 그 연수(年數)대로 하나님은 70년 동안 바벨론을 들어 징계를 내리셨습니다. 그 포로 생활 동안 이스라엘 백성은 나름대로 열심히 노력하고 애썼지만 모든 것이 허사였습니다. 그래서 전 이스라엘 백성이 자포자기의 심정으로 쓰러져 있을 때 ‘이전 것은 잊으라. 내가 새 일을 행하겠다’ 말씀하신 것입니다.
1. 이전 일을 기억하지 말라.
본문 18절에서 하나님은 ‘이전 일을 기억하지 말라’고 분명히 말씀하고 계십니다. 이것이 하나님께서 행하실 새 일의 축복을 받는 비결입니다. ‘이전 일을 기억하지 말라’는 말씀에는 ‘용서와 빈 마음을 가지라’는 뜻이 담겨 있습니다.
겟세마네 동산에서 예수님께서 잡히시던 날, 베드로는 대제사장의 종 말고의 귀를 칼로 쳐서 떨어뜨렸습니다. 자기 스승에게 행하는 포악에 대한 항거요 복수였던 것입니다. 그러나 주님은 ‘이것까지 참으라’ 하시며 땅에 떨어진 귀를 집어 다시 붙여 주셨습니다–“너희가 각각 중심으로 형제를 용서하지 아니하면 내 천부께서도 너희에게 이와 같이 하시리라”(마 18:35) 말씀하신 주님의 용서의 진수(眞髓)가 아닙니까?
구약에서도 ‘므낫세’란 이름을 통해 하나님은 용서의 복음을 인류에게 선포해 주셨습니다. 형들에게 팔려 애굽까지 오게 된 요셉이 13년 만에 총리가 되어 아들을 낳았습니다. 요셉은 그 아들의 이름을 ‘므낫세’라 하였습니다. 이는 “하나님이 나로 나의 모든 고난과 나의 아비의 온 집 일을 잊어버리게”(창 41:50) 하셨다고 믿었기 때문입니다. 그 결과로, 자기를 팔아넘긴 형들을 진정으로 용서할 수 있는 ‘용서의 사람’이 되었던 것입니다. 이처럼 과거를 잊고 용서하는 사람이 하나님께서 행하실 새 일의 축복을 받게 됩니다.
또한, 빈 마음을 가져야 합니다. 과거의 실패는 물론이요, 성공한 일에도 집착해서는 안 됩니다. 눅 12장의 어리석은 부자와 같이 자신의 성공에 만족하여 교만할 때, 하나님께서 그 영혼을 거두어 가시면 그동안 예비한 것이 누구의 것이 되겠습니까?(눅 12:20-21). 하나님께 부요하지 못하고 자기를 위하여 재물을 쌓아 둔 어리석은 자의 모습이 아닙니까?
사도 바울도 ‘뒤에 있는 것은 잊어버리고 앞에 있는 잡으려고 푯대를 향해 달음박질한다’고 고백하였듯이, 2022년 대망의 새해에는 과거의 실패와 낙담, 원수 맺은 것을 용서로써 다 풀고 빈 마음으로 하나님께 달려가시기 바랍니다.
2. 양각 나팔을 불라.
이스라엘의 신년 절기의 가장 큰 특색은 ‘숫양의 뿔’로 만든 나팔을 불어 신년의 시작을 알렸다는 것입니다. 광야 여정 중에는 ‘은’으로 만든 나팔을 이용했지만, 신년만은 숫양의 뿔로 만든 나팔만을 이용하도록 한 것입니다.
여기에는 유래가 있습니다. 아브라함이 백 세에 얻은 만득자 이삭을 바칠 때, 하나님께서는 그 마음 중심을 보시고 이삭 대신에 숫양을 준비해 두셨습니다. 아브라함이 외아들 이삭을 바치려 할 때 숫양이 준비돼 있었던 것처럼, 가장 소중한 전부를 드리고자 하는 결심을 할 때 하나님께서는 ‘여호와 이레’의 축복을 주신다는 의미입니다. 그래서 이스라엘 백성은 해마다 신년이면, 숫양의 뿔로 만든 나팔을 불며 믿음의 조상 아브라함의 신앙과 미리 준비해 두시는 하나님의 사랑과 축복을 되새기곤 했습니다. 또한, 양각 나팔을 불 때, 알게 모르게 지은 모든 죄를 회개하고 이웃 간에 불통, 불화했던 것을 다 풀고 용서하는 미덕을 행하였습니다(미 7:19). 그러므로 2022년 새해를 맞아, 우리도 믿음으로 양각 나팔을 불어, 예비하신 하나님의 축복을 받아 누려야만 하겠습니다.
3. 하나님의 약속을 믿으라.
하나님은 우리에게 먼저 약속을 주십니다. 사람이 그 약속을 믿을 때, 약속대로 우리에게 복을 주시는 것입니다. 그런데 사람들은 하나님께 ‘현재’의 복만을 요구합니다. 이것이 하나님과 사람의 다른 점입니다. 하나님의 약속은 현재가 아니라 미래입니다. 하지만 ‘오래 참으라’ 하지 않고 ‘미래에 있는 약속을 믿음으로 끌어당기라’고 말씀하고 있습니다. 이는 마치 아브라함이 75세에 부름을 받아, 자식을 낳을 수 없는 형편임에도 불구하고 ‘하늘의 별과 같고 바다의 모래’ 같은 많은 자손의 축복을 주겠다 할 때 믿음으로 그 약속을 믿고 현재로 끌어당겼던 것과 같습니다. 아브라함은 하나님의 약속을 믿음에 있어서 한 번도 그 믿음이 약하여지지 않았습니다(롬 4:19).
오늘 본문에도, 하나님께서는 ‘새 일을 행하시되 광야에 길을 내고 사막에 강을 내시겠다’고 하십니다. 작년 한 해 나의 가정과 직장과 사업, 특히 신앙생활의 모든 길이 막혀 있었는데, 2022년도에는 형통의 길을 내어 주시겠다는 것입니다. 그리하여 모두 원하는 소원의 항구에 도달하는 축복을 주십니다(시 107:27-30).
결론:
사랑하는 성도 여러분! 2021년 괴롭던 일은 다 잊으시기 바랍니다. 2022년도 희망의 새 아침이 각자 우리 마음속에 비추고 있습니다. “우리의 곳간에는 백곡이 가득하며” 양식이 가득합니다(시 144:13). 아무런 자격 없는 우리이지만, 하나님께서 우리를 선택하시고 창조하셔서 하나님의 영광을 위해, 하나님을 찬송하게 해 주셨습니다(사 43:12, 고전 10:31-33). 금년 한 해 엄청난 이 축복의 약속을 믿고 힘차게 달려가는 성도님들 되시기 바랍니다.
