A Time to Reflect Back on the Faith that Made What I Am
The aged Apostle Paul who is now over the age of 70! Many people who once pledged their lives to be with him through thick and thin have left him one by one to the place they desired to live. Demas went to Thessalonica because he loved the world. Only Luke, the physician, remained with Paul and took care of Paul who was suffering from eye disease and loneliness. What is comforting to know is that Mark who had betrayed in the past has returned with a change of heart. That is why the Apostle Paul asked Timothy to bring Mark with him when he comes. Today, I would like us to examine the faith that made us what we are through the images of Demas and Mark.
I. Demas who betrayed Paul and the gospel because he so loved the world.
The name Demas only appeared 3 times in the letters that Paul wrote; and we can see that it was expressed slightly differently each time. When Demas devoted himself with Paul in his ministry, he was expressed as “my fellow worker Demas” (Phm 1:24). However, it was simply expressed as “Demas” without any modifier when his name appeared for the 2nd time (Col 4:14). Finally on the 3rd time, he was recorded as a betrayer who deserted Paul because he loved this world (2Tim 4:10). From these 3 records of how his name was expressed, we can see how his faith had deteriorated. When it was peaceful and beneficial for him, Demas accompanied Paul and became an active associate in testifying the Word of God; but when it became difficult and disadvantageous, and when there were persecutions unfolding before his eyes, Demas deserted everything and walked on the path of a betrayer. Abandoning the Apostle Paul is identical to abandoning the gospel that he once considered as everything to him and testified for. Moreover, abandoning the gospel would mean abandoning God. Ultimately, it is identical to abandoning heaven, eternal life, blessing and joy. Calvin explained that Demas deserted Paul and fled to the world because he felt his life was threatened when he saw the reality of Paul’s imprisonment and his persecutions. Demas deserted Paul’s doctrine of faith, his ministry and purpose and fled to the world as directed by Satan. Demas chose complacency over persecution. He chose reality instead of the hope for the future. He chose himself over the Cross. Because he liked and enjoyed the success of the present time that is outside of Jesus more than the success that is invisible within Jesus, Demas fled to the world. Rather than becoming the hero of the great hope, Demas enjoyed more of the reality of the meaningless prosperity. He liked the visible reality than the invisible world of the Word. That is why he deserted the Apostle Paul and went to Thessalonica, to the world. My beloved saints! We found the fellows of prayer and the associates of faith that accompanied Daniel when he was under the hardship (Dan 2:17-18). The faith that accompanied Daniel even to the scene of death enabled him to overcome the tribulations. However, Demas was not able to be a part of this. Demas and Paul were once inseparable to the point that Paul’s breath was Demas’ breath; and Demas’ life was Paul’s life. Demas was Paul’s associate to proclaim the Word together and his fellow of prayers. However, if there is a yoke of betrayal that he was not able to stay until the end still exists on Demas’ shoulders today, we who were given duties and responsibilities in our church must examine to see if there is such image of Demas exists within ourselves.
II. Mark who turned at the path of betrayal and became a beneficial person for the Work of God.
When we look at the New Testament, Mark is recorded as a person with extraordinary background. Unlike the rest of the disciples who have the background of being a poor fisherman, Mark came from a prominent family and owned a large upper room in Jerusalem that could occupy approximately 120 people. When we examine the fact that the power of prayers of 120 people gathered in his upper room became the root and the driving force for today’s Christian church world-wide, we can say that Mark’s upper room was the birthing place for the movement of the church. As you can see, it was Mark who played a critical role in great history of church, but we see that his life was plagued with shameful betrayal and weaknesses. It was Mark who was following Jesus wearing nothing but a linen garment. When they seized him, he fled naked, leaving his garment behind (Mk 14:50-51). Moreover, he met Paul through his uncle Barnabas and made a vow to stay with him to spread the gospel; but Mark fled again because he was not able to fully overcome the pain and suffering he encountered during his missionary journey. I suppose this remained as a big scar and even as anger in Paul’s heart. Later, when Paul and Barnabas were leaving again for the missionary journey, they had a big argument because of Mark. Barnabas wanted to take Mark along, but Paul was against the idea because of Mark’s betrayal that Paul experienced; so, they argued and ultimately went separate ways. It seems as though Mark was walking on the path of betrayal that cannot be restored like Demas. However, not only Mark repented and returned and testified the gospel with Paul until the end, but became a precious fellow and associate and a great benefit to Paul as well (2Tim 4:11). Although it was Mark who gave Paul a great pain and scar, he was a great associate that accompanied Paul until the end and became the most beneficial person in Paul’s ministry after he repented and returned.
Conclusion:
My beloved saints! Now, before we walk on the long journey of the blessed times of 2022 that we are about to receive, we must have a time to reflect on our faith that made us what we are through the images of Demas and Mark. The Apostle Paul said that he does not consider his life as precious and of value when it is for the ministry of gospel for God (Acts 20:24). Although both Demas and Mark were Paul’s associates, weren’t they destined to betray Paul because they lacked both courage of faith and determination to risk their lives for the ministry of gospel unlike Paul? However, even if we may have the shameful images of betrayal and failure, I sincerely hope that when we turn and repent like Mark and work harder than before, then we will all be great benefit to the Work of God.
나의 나 된 신앙을 점검해 보는 시간
70이 넘은 노(老)사도 바울! 그동안 그와 동고동락하며 생명을 걸고 함께하기로 한 많은 사람이 하나둘씩 각자 살 곳을 향해 떠나가 버리고 말았습니다. 데마는 세상을 사랑하여 데살로니가로 갔습니다. 오직 의사 누가만 그와 함께하며 안질과 고독 속에 고통당하고 있는 바울 곁을 지키고 있었던 것입니다. 그나마 위로가 되는 것은 과거에 배신했던 마가의 회심(回心)입니다. 그래서 디모데에게 ‘올 때 마가를 데리고 오라’고 명하였던 것입니다. 데마와 마가, 이 둘의 모습을 통해, 오늘 우리는 각자 나의 나 된 신앙을 점검해 보고자 합니다.
1. 세상을 사랑하여 바울과 복음을 배신한 데마 .
바울 서신에 ‘데마’라는 이름이 딱 세 번 나오는데, 나올 때마다 그 표현이 다른 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 처음 바울과 함께 충성할 때는 ‘나의 동역자 데마’라고 표현하였습니다(몬 1:24). 그러나 두 번째는 아무 수식어도 없이 그냥 ‘데마’라고 하였고(골 4:14), 세 번째는 바울을 버리고 세상으로 도망한 배신자의 이름으로 기록되었습니다(딤후 4:10). 세 번에 걸쳐 나타난 데마의 이름 표현을 통해 우리는 데마의 신앙이 어떻게 변질하고 있는가를 보게 됩니다. 편안하고 자기에게 유익 될 때는 바울과 함께하고 말씀을 증거하는 일에 동역자가 되었지만, 힘들고, 유익 되는 일이 없을 때, 나아가 핍박이 자신의 앞에 다가와 있을 때 데마는 모든 것을 팽개치고 배신의 길로 달려갔던 것입니다.
사도 바울을 버린 것은 그가 전부로 알고 증거했던 복음을 버린 것입니다. 나아가, 복음을 버린 것은 하나님을 버린 것입니다. 결과적으로 천국, 영생 복락을 버린 것과 같습니다. 데마는 바울의 투옥과 고통의 현실을 보고 신변의 위협을 느꼈기 때문에 도망갔다고 칼빈은 설명하고 있습니다. 바울의 신앙 사상과 사역, 그 목적까지 다 내동댕이치고 마귀의 지시를 받아 세상을 향해 도망친 것입니다. 데마는 고난보다 안일을 택했습니다. 미래의 소망보다 현실을 택했습니다. 십자가보다 자신을 택한 것입니다. 그리스도 안에 있는 보이지 않는 성공보다 그리스도 밖에 있는 현재의 성공을 더 좋아하고 기뻐했기 때문에 세상을 향해 간 것입니다. 위대한 소망의 영웅이 되는 것보다 연약한 번영의 현실을 더 좋아했습니다. 보이지 않는 말씀의 세계보다 보이는 현실을 더 좋아한 것입니다. 그래서 사도 바울을 버리고 데살로니가로, 세상으로 향한 것입니다.
성도 여러분! 우리는 다니엘이 어려움에 처했을 때 그와 함께했던 기도의 동지, 믿음의 동지들을 발견하게 됩니다(단 2:17-18). 죽음의 현장까지도 동행했던 그 믿음이 어려운 시련을 이길 수 있었던 것입니다. 그러나 데마는 그러하지 못했습니다. 바울의 숨결이 데마의 숨결이었고, 데마의 생명이 바울의 생명이었습니다. 말씀 선포의 동지요, 기도의 동역자였습니다. 그러나 끝까지 함께하지 못한 배신의 멍에가 오늘까지도 데마의 어깨에 드리워져 있다면, 교회에서 직분을 맡은 저와 여러분의 모습 속에서도 데마와 같은 모습은 있지 않은지 점검해 보시기 바랍니다.
2. 배신의 길에서 돌이켜 하나님의 일에 유익한 자가 된 마가
신약성경을 볼 때, 마가는 특이한 전력을 가진 사람으로 기록되고 있습니다. 가난한 어부 출신의 다른 제자들과 달리, 마가는 부유한 집안의 아들로서 당시 예루살렘에 120명 정도가 모일 정도로 넓은 다락을 소유한 사람입니다. 그의 다락방에 모인 120명의 기도의 힘이 오늘날 전 세계 기독교회의 시초가 된 것을 살펴볼 때, 처음 교회의 시작이 바로 마가의 집에서부터 시작된 것입니다. 이처럼 교회사의 위대한 사건의 주인공이 된 마가였지만, 그의 삶은 부끄러운 배신과 나약함으로 점철되었음을 보게 됩니다.
예수님이 잡히셨을 때 베 홑이불을 두르고 따라가다가 무리에게 잡히자 다 벗어 던지고 벗은 몸으로 도망갔던 마가입니다(막 14:50-51). 또한, 삼촌 바나바를 통해 바울을 만나 그와 뜻을 같이하여 복음을 전하기로 맹세하지만, 힘든 선교여행의 고통을 끝까지 이겨 내지 못하고 그만 또다시 도망치고 말았습니다. 이것이 바울의 마음엔 커다란 상처로, 분노로 남아 있었던 것 같습니다. 후에 다시 선교여행을 떠나게 될 때 바울과 바나바는 마가로 인해 심한 다툼을 하게 됩니다. 바나바는 마가를 데려가기를 원했으나, 한 번 배신을 경험했던 바울은 이를 반대하다 다툼이 일어나고, 바울과 바나바까지도 피차 갈라서는 지경에까지 이르게 되었던 것입니다.
마가 또한 데마처럼 영영 회복할 수 없는 배신의 길로 달려가는 것 같아 보입니다. 그러나 마가는 회개하고 다시 돌아와 마지막까지 바울과 함께 복음을 증거했을 뿐만 아니라, 바울에게 있어서 크게 유익이 되는 귀중한 동지가 되었습니다(딤후 4:11). 바울에게 커다란 상처와 아픔을 주었던 마가이지만, 회개하고 돌이킨 후에는 맨 마지막까지 함께했던 동역자요, 가장 유익한 존재가 되었던 것입니다.
결론:
사랑하는 성도 여러분! 이제 우리가 받을 2022년 축복의 시간, 그 긴 노정을 걸어가기 전에 우리는 데마와 마가의 모습을 통해 각자 나의 나 된 신앙을 점검해 보는 시간을 가져야 하겠습니다. 사도 바울은 하나님의 복음 사역을 위해서는 자신의 생명을 조금도 귀한 것으로 여기지 아니한다고 하였습니다(행 20:24). 데마나 마가, 둘 다 바울의 동역자였지만 바울처럼 생명을 건 결심과 신앙의 용기가 없었기에 배반할 수밖에 없었던 것이 아닙니까? 그러나 아무리 실패와 배신의 부끄러운 모습을 지녔다 할지라도, 마가처럼 돌이켜 회개하고 더더욱 열심히 일할 때 하나님의 일에 크게 유익 되는 성도님들이 되시기 바라겠습니다.
