God Who Held Out His Hands All Day Long
In Michelangelo’s “The Creation of the Heavens (Creazione di Adamo),” you’ll see a finger that is stretched out. This denotes that the powerful hand of the living God has created the heavens and the earth. The hands in the Bible symbolize authority, power, and wisdom. The Greeks used the term ‘hands’ in mechanical senses such as building machines, but the Hebrews have further used this term in mental sense to express the power and dominance. Indeed, it denotes the creation and governance of Almighty God, His dominance and providence, or the realm of God’s dominion. Hence, when we say “the hand of God has reached” refers to the realm of God’s activity, and it is to make us recognize God, to believe Him and to long for Him.
I. The God who held out His hands all day long is the God of personality.
The expression “All day long I have held out my hands” in today’s Scripture text, Isa 65:2, indicates God’s personality. Although God is an invisible Spirit, He is the God of personality. Hence, we can find many parts of the Bible that speak of God in a personal way. First, God said He has eyes. It is written in 2Chr 16:9 that the eyes of the LORD range throughout the earth. It is an eye that searches the heart and examines the mind of the people. Moreover, it is also an eye that examines the hearts of the saints who worship in the temple with all their hearts, mind and sincerity. Hence, God answers the sincere prayers offered in His temple (1Ki 8:29). Second, God has ears so He hears our prayers. When the Israelites cried out to God with the voice of grumbling and resentment during the wilderness journey, God heard them all and said, “I will do to you the very thing I heard you say” (Num 14:26-28). Thus, we know that God has ears to hear whatever we say and repays us according to what we said (Mt 12:36-37). Third, God has mouth. It is stated in Isa 34:16, “It is His mouth that has given the order.” The recording of the Bible was done through His commands made with His mouth. When we see in Isa 56:11, God can say “I said” when He speaks to us because He has a mouth. Fourth, God has hands. For 400 years, the Israelites had suffered a great deal of agony in Egypt making bricks with their hands. It was so agonizing that their nation’s identity and language were almost forgotten. It is written in Deut 4:34 that God carried them and led them with His hands. “Has any god ever tried to take for himself one nation out of another nation, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, or by great and awesome deeds?” This hand is a mighty arm and the powerful hand that performed countless signs and miracles. Lastly, God has feet. That is why Jesus walked on the lake with his feet (Mt 14:25). With those feet, Jesus partakes in all our tribulations (Isa 63:9).
II. The God who held out His hands all day long is the God of love.
When God said He held out His hands all day long, it denotes His love for us. God introduced Himself as ‘love’ in 1Jn 4:8. Likewise, today’s Scripture text, Isa 65, shows the love of God that held out His hands to carry the obstinate Israelites who betrayed Him and rebelled against Him. From this, we can see that the love of God remains unchanged forever. God who said in the verse 1 of today’s Scripture text, “I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me; I was found by those who did not seek me. To a nation that did not call on my name, I said, ‘Here am I, here am I”! “Those who did not ask for me” refers to the Gentiles. “Those who did not seek me” also refers to those who did not realize or believe in God properly. However, God says with the saddened heart that He will save them even if He has to teach them. In the parable of the prodigal son appear in Lk 15, the father who waited for his prodigal son at the entrance of the village, ran to him as soon as he saw his son and threw his arms around him is the image of God of love. That hand of God is the hand that carried our sins and pains. The Lord has sacrificed his hands to be crucified on the cross for the sins that we have committed with our hands. Jesse has suffered with the crown of thorns placed on his head for the sins that we have committed with our heads. Jesus has forgiven our sins we have committed with our hearts when his side was pierced with a spear. Thus, the blood shed from the Lord’s hands, feet, and head have become the blood of forgiveness and the powerful blood that can forgive our sins regardless of the type. “The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.” Indeed, this is the outcome of the Lord’s love. As a result, the Christianity has become a religion without tombs. Jesus broke the authority of death and resurrected. By surrendering into the Lord’s hands of love that have been stretched out, an opportunity for rehabilitation and the blessing to live again have come back to us who were judged and collapsed due to sin.
Conclusion:
It is written in Ps 31:15, “My times are in your hands.” In the past, when the Israelites fought against the Amalekites, they won as long as the hands of Moses were held up and they were able to plant the victorious banner called ‘Jehovah Nissi.’ I sincerely hope that all of you will be the saints who hold on to God who is coming toward you with His hands held out all day long even today.
하루 종일 손을 펴신 하나님
미켈란젤로의 ‘천지창조’에 보면 쭉 뻗치고 있는 손가락을 보게 됩니다. 이는 살아 계신 하나님의 능력의 손이 천지를 창조했음을 나타내는 뜻입니다. 성경을 볼 때, 손은 권세와 능력과 지혜를 말하고 있습니다.
헬라인에게 있어 ‘손’은 기계를 제작하는 등의 기계적 의미로 사용되었지만, 히브리인들은 더 나아가 정신적인 기관으로서 능력과 지배를 표현하는 데 사용해 왔습니다. 곧 그것은 전능하신 하나님의 창조와 통치, 지배와 섭리, 즉 하나님의 지배 영역을 말씀하고 있는 것입니다. 그러므로 ‘하나님의 손이 닿았다’는 말은 하나님의 활동 무대를 가리키는 말로, 하나님을 알게 하고, 믿게 하며, 바라게 하기 위함임을 알 수 있습니다.
1. 하루 종일 손을 펴신 하나님은 인격의 하나님입니다.
본문 사 65:2의 ‘내가 종일 손을 펴서’라는 표현은 하나님의 인격성을 표현해 주고 있습니다. 하나님은 보이지 않는 영이시지만 인격의 하나님입니다. 그러므로 성경에서 하나님을 인격적인 모습으로 말씀하고 있는 부분들을 많이 발견할 수 있습니다.
먼저, 하나님은 눈이 있다고 했습니다. 대하 16:9 말씀을 볼 때, 하나님의 눈은 온 땅을 감찰하시는 눈입니다. 사람들의 심장 폐부를 살피시는 눈입니다. 또한, 성전에서 마음과 정성과 뜻을 다해 예배드리는 성도들의 심정을 살피시는 눈입니다. 그러므로 하나님의 성전에서 간절히 드리는 기도를 하나님께서는 응답하시는 것입니다(왕상 8:29).
또한, 하나님은 귀가 있어서 우리의 기도 소리를 들으십니다. 이스라엘 백성이 광야 여정 중에서 하나님께 불평과 원망의 소리를 지를 때, 하나님께서는 그 소리를 다 들으시고 “너희 말이 내 귀에 들린 대로 내가 너희에게 행하리니”(민 14:26-28)라고 말씀하셨습니다. 이처럼 하나님은 귀가 있어서 우리가 무슨 말을 하든지 다 들으시고, 우리가 말한 그 말대로 갚으시고 행하시는 분임을 알 수 있습니다(마 12:36-37).
하나님은 또한 입이 있습니다. 사 34:16에서 “여호와의 입이 이를 명하셨고”라는 말씀을 볼 수 있습니다. 성경을 기록하신 것도 바로 하나님께서 당신의 입으로 명하셔서 된 것입니다. 사 56:11 말씀 볼 때도, 하나님은 입이 있기 때문에 “가라사대, 말씀하시기를” 하시며 우리에게 말씀하실 수 있는 것입니다.
하나님은 손이 있습니다. 400년 동안 애굽에서 이스라엘 백성이 손으로 벽돌을 구우며 모진 고생을 했습니다. 민족의 정체성과 언어마저도 잊어버릴 정도로 힘든 고통의 삶이었습니다. 이때 하나님께서는 당신의 손으로 이들을 안아서 인도해 내셨다고 신 4:34에 말씀하고 있습니다. “어떤 신이 강한 손과 편 팔과 크게 두려운 일로 한 민족을 다른 민족에게서 인도하여 낸 일이 있느냐?” 이 손은 강한 팔이요 능력의 손으로, 수많은 기사와 이적을 행하신 손입니다. 끝으로, 하나님은 발이 있습니다. 그러기에 예수님은 두 발로 물 위를 걸으셨습니다(마 14:25). 그 발로 우리의 모든 환난에 동참하십니다(사 63:9).
2. 하루 종일 손을 펴신 하나님은 사랑의 하나님입니다.
하나님께서 하루 종일 손을 펴고 계시다는 것은 바로 우리를 향한 당신의 사랑을 보여 주시는 말씀입니다. 요일 4:8에서 하나님은 당신을 ‘사랑’이라고 소개하고 있습니다. 마찬가지로, 오늘 본문인 사 65장은 하나님을 배반하고 등진 패역한 이스라엘 백성을 당신의 손을 펴서 안아 주시는 사랑의 모습을 보여 주고 있습니다. 이를 볼 때 우리는 하나님의 사랑은 영원히 변함이 없음을 알 수 있습니다.
본문 1절 말씀 볼 때, “나를 구하지 아니하던 자에게 물음을 받았으며 나를 찾지 아니하던 자에게 찾아냄이 되었으며 내 이름을 부르지 아니하던 나라에게 내가 여기 있노라 내가 여기 있노라 하였노라” 하신 하나님! ‘나를 구하지 아니하던 자’는 이방 사람을 가리킵니다. ‘나를 찾지 아니하던 자’도 역시 하나님은 제대로 깨닫지 못하고 믿지 못하던 자를 말합니다. 그러나 하나님은 그러한 자들을 가리켜서도 구원하시겠다고 안타깝게 말씀하고 있는 것입니다. 눅 15장의 탕자의 비유에서, 집 나간 탕자를 동네 밖 어귀에서 기다리며 발견하자마자 손을 펴서 안는 아버지의 모습이 바로 사랑의 하나님의 모습입니다.
하나님의 그 손은 우리의 죄악과 질고를 대신 짊어지신 손입니다. 나의 손으로 지은 죄를 주님께서 대신해서 당신의 손을 못 박힘에 내어 주셨습니다. 머리로 지은 죄를 가시 면류관으로 대신 고난 받으셨습니다. 마음으로 지은 죄를 옆구리의 창으로 대신 속(贖)해 주셨습니다. 그리하여 주님의 양손, 양발, 머리에서 흘리신 피는 우리의 어떠한 죄도 다 사하실 수 있는 사죄의 피, 능력의 피가 되었습니다.
“나를 믿는 사람은 죽어도 살겠고 살아서 믿는 사람은 영원히 산다”. 바로 주님의 사랑의 결과입니다. 그 결과로 우리 기독교는 무덤이 없는 종교가 되었습니다. 사망 권세를 깨뜨리고 부활하셨습니다. 주님의 펴신 사랑의 손에 붙잡힘으로, 죄로 멸망 받은 우리에게도 재활의 기회, 다시 사는 축복의 기회가 찾아온 것입니다.
결론:
시 31:15을 보면 “내 시대가 주의 손에 있사오니”라는 말씀이 있습니다. 과거에 이스라엘 백성이 아말렉과 전투할 때, 모세의 손이 들릴 때마다 승기를 잡았고, 그 결과로 ‘여호와 닛시’라는 승리의 깃발을 꽂을 수 있었습니다. 오늘도 나를 향해 하루 종일 펴신 팔로 다가오시는 하나님을 붙잡으시는 성도님들이 되시기 바랍니다.
