Let Us Examine the Spiritual Status of the Believers Who are in Jesus Christ Who is the Life
The apostle Paul found himself still wandering in sin even though he experienced grace after his change of heart and sighed, “What a wretched man I am!” However, he found himself new “in Christ” in Rom 8. It denotes that it is the righteous world with absolutely no condemnation where the apostle Paul and Jesus are inseparable and perfectly united. Moreover, he confesses his changed self of dwelling in Jesus Christ after he was swallowed up by the life of Jesus. We will examine through today’s message if we are truly dwelling in Jesus Christ like the apostle Paul.
I. Do you dwell within Jesus and living with his life?
The saints who truly dwell in Jesus and swallowed up by His life are now living the life of Jesus Christ and not their own. Jesus cannot swallow up such people with his life if they still have their assertions, thoughts, ideas and ideologies remain in them. It is because they are like thorns. Thus, living with the life of Jesus means living not by our own strength but living with a life solely strengthened by the grace of God. Without this, it becomes my faith and may not be the faith that God acknowledges no matter how faithful I am (Mt 7:21-24, Lk 13:24-25). What do we do when we hear “I certainly do not know you” when we thought we were faithful? Thus, those who dwell in Jesus are the ones who are swallowed up by the life of Jesus. They are the ones who have changed from the life of man to the life of Jesus. The grace of the Holy Spirit works strongly within them so that they are not able to live fleshly life even if they want to. In short, it is so because the life of Jesus has swallowed them up. Jesus purchased our lives with the blood he shed on the cross at the hills of Golgotha and has summoned us by name, ‘You are mine.’ We are now God’s possession because He purchased us with His precious blood. We have become the ones who work with the life of God, think with the life of God and live with the life of God. He will accept the lives of such saints as a fragrant sacrifice. He is accepting their life of living worship (2Cor 2:14). Such life is a true life of worship. It is most valuable because we live with the life of Christ. As such, living with the life of Jesus Christ is a life of absolute obedience. Didn’t Jesus set as an example to this principle when he obeyed even to death? Jesus did not consider equality with God; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant. He obeyed to give up his body as a ransom to be crucified on the cross for the sin of the mankind. Hence, there can be no enemies for those who live with the life of Jesus. Regardless of the situation, there is no worry or fear. There is only thanksgiving in everything we do. There is no place for fleshly attributes such as envy, jealousy, or disappointment. It is because what is mortal has been swallowed up by life (2Cor 5:4).
II. Has your old self been created as a new self in Christ?
After experiencing the grace of being swallowed up by the life of Jesus, the apostle Paul confessed, “I have nothing but possess everything.” This is possible because the apostle Paul’s old self was created as a new being in Christ. We deserve to die thousands of times when we think of our sins, but we have become a new creation with absolute grace of God, His “first love” for us and with the redemption paid for by the crucifixion of Jesus. Now, we have been moved from the level of an old self to the level of life of Jesus where we are thrilled with God’s love and where thanksgiving overflows. The love, holiness, righteousness, and redemption are destined to be revealed in the saints who experienced such grace, regardless of situations they are faced with. The life of Jesus Christ permeates into our spirit and body and leads our life. Thus, Jesus becomes the life of man, the content of man, and the purpose. If we speak about the people who are at the ‘level of life,’ they are figuratively like those who were faithful after Exodus while Joshua the man of God was alive. According to Jos 24:29-31, of the entire Israelites, those who had experienced everything the LORD had done for them served the LORD throughout the lifetime of Joshua. However, it is written in Jud 2:7-10 that those who served the LORD throughout the lifetime of Joshua have returned to the wicked life of their ancestors after Joshua died. What does this tell us? This means that we alone should not live a life of grace swallowed up by the life of Jesus. This means that if we have a husband, wife, or children that does not believe in God like those Israelites who did not believe God after Joshua died, there has got to be a work of God that even their lives are swallowed up by the life of Jesus and be renewed with a new life.
Conclusion:
It is stated in the Bible that people are slaves to whatever has mastered them (2Pet 2:19). If our lives are swallowed up by the devil, we are bound to become the slaves of the devil. However, we become the servants of Jesus Christ if our lives are swallowed up by the life of Jesus Christ. We become the servants of the Lord who lives forever and ever as the King of all Kings, as everlasting Life, and as glorious life. Now, when we live a life that pleases God as weapons of righteousness to fight for His Will, we are blessed with the great blessings for thousand generations to come.
생명이신 예수 그리스도 안에 있는 신자들의 영적 상태를 점검해 보자
사도 바울은 회심 이후 은혜의 체험을 하였음에도 불구하고 여전히 죄악 가운데 헤매고 있는 자신을 발견하고, “오호라 나는 곤고한 자로다!”라는 탄식을 하고 있습니다. 그러나 로마서 8장에 와서는 “그리스도 안에서” 새로운 자신의 모습을 발견합니다. 그것은 사도 바울과 예수가 따로 떨어져 있는 세계가 아니라 온전히 하나 된 세계, 그래서 결코 정죄함이 없는 의의 세계입니다. 나아가, 예수님의 생명에 삼키운 바 되어 예수 그리스도의 삶을 살아가는 변화한 자아를 고백하고 있습니다. 오늘 말씀을 통해, 우리도 사도 바울과 같이 진정 예수 그리스도 안에 거하고 있는지 점검해 보도록 하겠습니다.
1. 예수 안에서 예수의 생명으로 살아가고 있습니까?
진정 예수 안에 거하며 그분의 생명에 삼키운 바가 된 성도들은 이제 자신의 생명으로서가 아니라 예수 그리스도의 생명으로 살아가는 자들입니다. 아직까지 내 주장, 내 생각, 내 사상과 이념이 남아 있다면 그러한 자는 예수님께서 그 생명으로 삼키실 수가 없습니다. 마치 가시와 같은 존재들이기 때문입니다.
그러므로 예수의 생명으로 살아간다는 것은, 내 힘으로가 아니라 전적으로 하나님의 은혜를 힘입어 살아가는 것을 말합니다. 그것이 없다면 내가 아무리 열심히 믿는다고 할지라도 그것은 나의 믿음이지, 하나님께서 인정해 주시는 믿음이 아닐 수도 있습니다(마 7:21-24, 눅 13:24-25). 나는 잘 믿는다고 생각했는데 “나는 너를 도무지 알지 못한다”라는 말씀을 듣게 되면 어떡하겠습니까?
그러므로 예수 안에 있는 자는 예수의 생명에 삼키운 바가 된 사람들입니다. 이들은 사람의 생명에서 예수의 생명으로 변화된 자들입니다. 더는 육신적으로 살고 싶어도 살 수 없도록 성령님의 강권적인 은혜가 붙잡아 줍니다. 한마디로 예수님의 생명이 잡아먹었기 때문입니다.
골고다 언덕에서 흘리신 십자가의 피로 우리의 생명을 사시고, ‘너는 내 것이라’ 지명하셨습니다. 이제 하나님께서 당신의 핏값을 지불하고 사신 것이기 때문에 하나님의 소유된 존재입니다. 하나님의 생명으로 일하고, 하나님의 생명으로 생각하며, 하나님의 생명으로 살아가는 존재가 되었습니다. 이러한 성도들의 삶을 하나님께서 향기로운 제물로 열납하십니다. 그들의 산 예배의 삶을 흠향하시는 것입니다(고후 2:14). 이러한 삶이야말로 참된 예배의 삶입니다. 그리스도의 생명의 삶을 가지고 살아가는 삶이기에 가장 값진 것입니다.
이처럼 예수 그리스도의 생명으로 살아가는 삶은 절대 순종의 삶입니다. 예수님도 죽기까지 순종하심으로 이 도의 모범을 우리에게 보여 주시지 않았습니까? 하나님과 동등하신 분이 동등 됨을 취하지 않고 자기를 완전히 비워 종의 형체를 입었습니다. 인류의 죄를 위해 십자가에 자신의 몸을 내어주기까지 순종하셨습니다. 그러므로 예수의 생명으로 새롭게 살아가는 자들에게는 원수가 있을 수 없습니다. 어떤 환경에 부닥쳐도 걱정이나 두려움이 없습니다. 오직 범사에 감사할 뿐입니다. 시기나 질투, 서운한 생각과 같은 육의 속성은 발붙일 곳이 없습니다. 죽을 것이 생명에게 삼키운 바 되었기 때문입니다(고후 5:4).
2. 옛사람이 그리스도 안에서 새것으로 창조함을 받았습니까?
사도 바울은 예수의 생명에 삼키운 바 된 은혜를 체험하고 나서, “내가 아무것도 가진 것이 없지만 모든 것을 가진 자로다”라고 고백하였습니다. 이는 사도 바울의 옛사람이 그리스도 안에서 새로운 존재로 창조함을 받았기 때문에 가능합니다. 우리의 죄를 생각하면 천만 번 죽어 마땅하지만, 하나님의 절대적인 은혜와 ‘먼저 사랑’, 그리고 십자가 구속의 공로로 이제 우리는 새로운 피조물이 되었습니다. 이제 옛사람의 단계에서 하나님의 사랑에 감격하고 감사가 넘치는 주님의 ‘생명 단계’로 옮겨간 것입니다. 이러한 은혜를 체험한 성도는 어떠한 환경에서도 사랑과 거룩, 의와 구속이 드러나게 돼 있습니다. 예수 그리스도의 생명이 나의 영혼과 육신 속에 스며들어와 삶을 이끌어 갑니다. 그러므로 예수께서 사람의 생명이 되시고, 사람의 내용이 되시며, 목적이 되십니다.
이처럼 ‘생명 단계’에 있는 사람들은 비유적으로 말한다면, 출애굽 후 하나님의 사람 여호수아가 살 동안 잘 믿었던 사람들과 같습니다. 수 24:29-31 말씀을 볼 때, 모든 이스라엘 백성 중에 여호수아의 사는 날 동안 하나님의 이적을 체험한 자들은 하나님을 잘 믿었습니다.
그러나 삿 2:7-10 말씀을 볼 때, 여호수아 생전에 잘 믿었던 이스라엘 백성이 여호수아가 죽자 다시 과거 조상들의 죄악된 삶으로 돌아가고 말았다는 내용이 나옵니다. 이것은 우리에게 무엇을 말해 주고 있습니까?
나만 예수의 생명에 삼키운 바 되어 은혜의 삶을 살아서는 안 되겠다는 뜻입니다. 여호수아 사후에 믿지 못하던 이스라엘 백성과 같이, 우리 주변에 믿지 못하는 남편이나 아내, 자녀들이 있다면 그들까지도 함께 예수의 생명에 삼키운 바 되어 새로운 삶으로 거듭나는 역사가 있어야겠다는 것입니다.
결론:
진 자는 이긴 자의 종이라고 성경은 말씀하고 있습니다(벧후 2:19). 우리의 생명이 마귀에게 삼킨 바 되면 우리는 마귀의 종이 될 수밖에 없습니다. 그러나 예수 그리스도의 생명에게 삼키운 바 되면 우리는 예수 그리스도의 종입니다. 세세 무궁토록 만왕의 왕으로 사시는 주님의 생명, 영원한 생명, 영광의 생명 되시는 분의 종이 된 것입니다. 이제 그분의 뜻을 위해 싸우는 의의 병기로서 하나님께서 원하시는 뜻대로 삶을 살 때, 천대까지 복을 받는 큰 축복이 임하게 되는 것입니다.
