I Am God's Precious Treasure
God cherishes those God-fearing saints like a precious treasure and hold them tightly in His arms to protect them. He gives them the power of His mighty arms so that they can be victorious in everything they do. Hence, those God-fearing saints are considered precious and lovable to God like a cherished treasure. Through today’s message, let us examine together who would become God’s treasured people and the types of blessing that they would be blessed with.
I. Those who fear God are a treasured people.
When we look at Deut 26:18, God recognizes us as His “treasured possession” and made us His Chosen People that obey all His commands. If so, what kind of life should God’s treasured people live? When we look at the Book of Deuteronomy in particular, we can see that it is God-fearing life. It is written in Deut 4:10, “…so that they may learn to revere me as long as they live…” It is also clearly stated in Deut 10:12 that what God asks from His treasured possession is to “fear the LORD your God.” The word “Reverence” refers in short, to serve and honor God with “fear and trembling.” Abraham believed in God too, but it was after he sacrificed Isaac on a mountain in Moriah that he was recognized for God-fearing faith — “Now I know that you fear Me” (Gen 22:12). Hence, a man of faith who truly became God’s treasured possession must have a “God-fearing faith” like Abraham who was able to obey the Word of God to sacrifice things more precious than his own life. When we believe in God with “reverence,” God will give us the blessings of wisdom and understanding (Job 28:28). Moreover, the blessings of peace, salvation, wisdom, and knowledge will be granted to those who fear God (Isa 33:6). That is why the Prophet Isaiah clearly testified the association between the treasured people and God-fearing faith by saying, “the fear of the LORD is the key to this treasure.” Lastly, it is written in Mal 3:16, “A scroll of remembrance was written in his presence concerning those who feared the LORD.” It is also written in Php 2:12 of the New Testament which says, “continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling.” Simply said, this “fear and trembling” mentioned here refers to the faith of “reverence.” As we believe in God with reverence, we will accomplish salvation and our names will be written in the Book of Life.
II. What are the blessings that God gives to His treasured people?
What does a ‘treasure’ denote in terms of the life of faith for the saints? It refers to the blessing of salvation received as a result of faith. This is identical to how the Apostle Paul considered worldly knowledge and his personal background as a garbage but grasped on to the knowledge of knowing Jesus Christ as far more elegant and worthy when he accepted Jesus Christ and believed in him with confidence. It is because the knowledge of God gained by faith in Jesus Christ and the knowledge about the humans, the salvation, the Church, the End Times and the life after death sparkles like a treasure in the lives of the saints. If so, let us examine together through the Bible how God blesses such treasured people. First, God will give them the power, strength and authority to govern all nations. It is stated in 1Chr 29:11-12, “Wealth and honor come from you; you are the ruler of all things. In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all.” If we were to summarize this, it is the ‘power, strength and authority to govern all nations.’ It is also testified in Isa 33:22, “The LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king.” God who is the legislator of salvation, the judiciary who handles our sins, and the good king that governs His people with goodness, grants His treasured people with these amazing blessings. Next, God grants us with the blessing of His arm of strength and protection. God’s arm is symbolically depicted as an image of power and protection. It is stated in Isa 33:2, “The LORD becomes our strength every morning and our salvation in time of distress.” It is also stated in Deut 33:27, “The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms. He will drive out your enemies before you, saying, ‘Destroy them!’” This denotes that the arms of God protect us and become our strength. Just as arms are essential and critical in one’s daily life, God has become a source of the power and protection for His treasured people through the image of ‘arms.’ In the New Testament, Jesus embraced us as he was crucified on the cross with his arms stretched out. Thus, the arm of the Lord is the arm of victory, the arm of power, and the arm of hope. They are the arms of peace that one can trust and feel reassured. They are the arms of love and the arms of salvation. They are the arms of grace. They are the arms of absolute protection. We must hold on to these arms of power so that we become the saints who only have victory in everything we do, in spirit and in flesh.
Conclusion:
God becomes the arms of strength to those who long for the LORD. There is absolutely no wavering in the individuals or households that is protected by His arms. They certainly cannot fail. It is because the Lord embraces us with his left arm and holds and leads us with his right arm. It is because God protects us with the blessing of absolute protection so that Satan the devil may not enter in.
나는 하나님의 보배다
하나님을 ‘경외’하는 성도들을 하나님께서는 보배처럼 귀하게 여기시며 당신의 팔로 꽉 안아서 보호해 주십니다. 강한 팔의 능력을 주셔서 범사에 승리케 해 주십니다. 그러므로 하나님을 경외하는 성도들은 하나님께 보배처럼 귀중하고 사랑스러운 존재가 되는 것입니다.
오늘 말씀을 통해 어떠한 자가 하나님의 보배로운 백성이 되는지, 또한 하나님의 보배로운 백성들은 어떠한 축복을 받게 되는지 함께 살펴보도록 하겠습니다.
1. 하나님을 경외하는 자가 보배로운 백성입니다.
신 26:18 말씀을 볼 때, 하나님께서 우리를 ‘보배로운 백성’으로 인정하셔서 하나님의 모든 명령을 잘 준행하는 선민으로 삼아 주셨습니다. 그렇다면 하나님의 보배로운 백성들은 어떠한 삶을 살아야 할까요? 특별히 신명기서의 말씀을 중심으로 볼 때, 그것은 하나님을 경외하는 것임을 알 수 있습니다. 신 4:10 말씀을 보면 “그들로 세상 사는 날 동안 나 경외함을 배우게 하며”라고 말씀하셨고, 신 10:12에서도 여호와께서 그의 보배로운 백성에게 요구하는 것은 “네 하나님 여호와를 경외하는 것”이라고 분명히 말씀하고 있습니다.
‘경외’(敬畏)란 한마디로 ‘두렵고 떨림으로’ 하나님을 섬기며 공경하는 것을 말합니다. 아브라함이 하나님을 믿기는 했지만 ‘경외’하는 믿음으로 인정받기는 모리아의 한 산에서 이삭을 바친 후였습니다–“내가 이제야 네가 하나님을 경외하는 줄을 아노라”(창 22:12). 그러므로 진정으로 하나님의 보배로운 백성 된 믿음의 사람은, 아브라함과 같이 자신의 생명 이상의 귀중한 것까지도 바치라는 말씀에 순종할 수 있는 ‘경외의 신앙’이 있어야 합니다. 하나님을 믿되 ‘경외함’으로 믿을 때, 하나님께서는 지혜와 명철의 축복을 주십니다(욥 28:28). 또한, 하나님을 경외하는 자에게는 평안과 구원과 지혜와 지식의 축복이 주어집니다(사 33:6). 그래서 이사야 선지자는 “여호와를 경외함이 너의 보배니라”라고, 보배로운 백성과 하나님을 경외하는 신앙과의 연관성을 밝히 증거해 주고 있는 것입니다. 끝으로, 말 3:16 말씀을 볼 때 여호와를 경외하는 자가 그 기념책에 기록되리라고 하였습니다. 신약에서도 빌 2:12에 “두렵고 떨림으로 너희 구원을 이루라”라는 말씀이 있습니다. 여기서 ‘두렵고 떨림으로’는 한마디로 하면 ‘경외’의 신앙을 말합니다. 하나님을 믿되 경외함으로 믿을 때, 구원을 이루어 생명책에 그 이름이 기록되는 것입니다.
2. 보배로운 백성에게 주시는 하나님의 축복은?
성도들의 신앙생활에 있어 보배는 무엇을 말합니까? 그것은 믿음의 결과로 받은 구원의 축복을 말합니다. 이는 사도 바울이 그리스도를 영접하고 확실히 믿게 되었을 때, 과거의 세상 학문과 자신의 지식을 한낱 배설물처럼 여기고, 오직 예수 그리스도를 아는 지식을 가장 고상한 것으로 알아 붙잡았던 것과 같습니다. 예수 그리스도를 믿음으로 말미암아 얻게 된 하나님에 관한 지식, 인간과 구원과 교회, 그리고 종말과 내세에 관한 지식이 성도들의 삶에 있어서 보배와 같이 빛나기 때문입니다. 그렇다면 하나님께서 이처럼 보배로운 백성들에게 어떠한 축복을 주시는지 성경을 통해 알아보도록 하겠습니다.
먼저, 만국을 다스리는 권세와 능력과 힘을 주십니다. 대상 29:11-12 말씀을 보면, 부와 귀가 주께로 말미암고 하나님의 손에 권세와 능력이 있기에 모든 자를 크게 하심과 강하게 하심이 주의 손에 있다고 말씀하고 있습니다. 이를 요약하면, 한마디로 ‘만국을 다스리는 권세와 능력’이라 할 수 있습니다. 사 33:22에도 하나님은 우리의 재판장이시며 율법을 세우신 분이요 왕이시라고 증거하고 있습니다. 구원의 입법자요, 우리의 죄를 처리해 주시는 사법자이시며, 선하게 통치하시는 왕이신 하나님께서 그의 보배로운 백성들에게 이처럼 엄청난 축복을 주시는 것입니다.
다음으로, 하나님의 능력과 보호의 팔의 축복을 주십니다. 하나님의 팔은 상징적으로 능력과 보호의 이미지로 묘사되고 있습니다. 사 33:2에 보면 “주는 아침마다 우리의 팔이 되시며 화난 때에 우리의 구원이 되소서”라고 하였습니다. 신 33:27에서도 “영원하신 팔이 네 아래 있도다 그가 네 앞에서 대적을 쫓으시며 멸하라 하시도다”라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 하나님의 팔이 우리를 보호해 주시고 우리의 능력이 되어 주신다는 내용의 말씀입니다. 사람들의 일상의 삶 속에서도 팔은 필수적이며 긴요하게 쓰이는 것과 마찬가지로, 하나님은 ‘팔’의 이미지를 통해 당신의 보배로운 백성들의 능력과 보호의 원천이 되어 주셨습니다. 신약에서도 예수님은 당신의 양손을 벌려 십자가에 못 박히심으로 우리를 끌어안아 주셨습니다. 그러므로 주님의 팔은 승리의 팔이요, 능력의 팔이며, 소망의 팔입니다. 믿고 안심할 수 있는 평안의 팔입니다. 사랑의 팔이요, 구원의 팔입니다. 은혜의 팔입니다. 절대 안전의 팔입니다. 이러한 능력의 팔을 꽉 붙잡고 놓지 않으므로 영육 간 범사에 승리만 있는 성도님들이 되어야겠습니다.
결론:
여호와를 앙망하는 자에게 하나님은 그의 팔이 되어 주십니다. 하나님의 팔이 지켜 주시는 개인이나 가정은 절대 흔들림이 없습니다. 망할 수가 없습니다. 주님께서 왼손으로 우리를 안아 주시고, 오른손으로 우리를 붙잡아 인도해 주시기 때문입니다. 사단 마귀가 틈타지 못하도록 하나님께서 절대 안전의 축복으로 지켜 주시기 때문입니다.
