The Day That a Round Loaf of Barley Bread came Tumbling In
Through today’s Scripture text where the 300 warriors of Gideon won the battle against the great Midianite army, we learn the secret of the greatest power that the weakest possess. This shows that when one abandons his worldly desires and be faithful only to his calling, any forces can easily be defeated no matter how strong it is. Hence, those 300 warriors who were with Gideon were those who prayed, who were fearless, and who carried out a duty of a round loaf of barley bread.
I. A round loaf of barley bread symbolizes an insignificant existence.
A round loaf of barley bread is a food for the poor which signifies a “low social status.” The 300 selected warriors of Gideon were brave soldiers of faith, but they seemed insignificant like a round loaf of barley bread in the eyes of the Midianite army. It is identical to how the army of Pharaoh of Egypt disdained Moses’ men during Exodus (Exo 14:1-10). It is identical to how Sennacherib, the king of Assyria underestimated the army of Hezekiah of Judah (2Ki 19:1-37, Isa 37:37-38). It is also identical to how Goliath, the warrior of the Philistines, scoffed at David and his soldiers (1Sam 17:24-51). Moreover, it is identical to how the high priests, teachers of the law, and Pharisees treated Jesus with contempt as a friend of tax collectors and sinners (Mt 11:19, Lk 15:2, 19:7). It is identical to how public sees the believers of the gospel of the cross as nothing more than a “round loaf of barley bread.” Isn’t it like the Christians who are few in number walk on a narrow path are ridiculed by many people of the world who walk on a wide path? However, a loaf of barley bread is an aggregated bread. It is a bread that God recognizes, and it is a bread of faith. The 300 warriors of Gideon as a “round loaf of barley bread” are relentless and fearless, and they set their eyes only on God, trust, follow and rely only on Him! They were united as one and became one “round loaf of barley bread” (Jud 7:13). Hence, no one among them were fearful. They were warriors full of spirits, rely only on the living God and pray only to Him. They confront the urgent situation that they are faced with and are fully prepared for the battle. Because this “round loaf of barley bread” is united as “one loaf” filled with the faith to trust God and His spirit, no one can separate it.
II. A “round loaf of barley bread” is the living bread of life.
“A round loaf of barley bread came tumbling into the Midianite camp. It struck the tent”–stated in v13 of today’s Scripture text. A round loaf of barley bread came “tumbling in” indicates that it is active. In other words, this barley bread is not stagnant but a moving bread. Thus, we know it is a living bread or the bread of life, and the bread of Immanuel that God works within. It is a bread that obeys the Will of God. As the bread of life of the cross, this “round loaf of barley bread” moved toward the Midianite camp. This barley bread is a “powerful explosive.” It is written, “It struck the tent with such force that the tent overturned and collapsed” (v13). This is a powerful force. Isn’t this a powerful “barley bread” that is beyond expectation? The 300 warriors of Gideon or a “round loaf of barley bread” accomplished something that no one could expect. Moreover, this “barley bread” became the sword of God or the “sword of Gideon” (v14). The sword of Gideon symbolizes victory. The 300 warriors of Gideon were insignificant to the eyes of the Midianites. They underestimated, disdained and disregarded the 300 warriors of Gideon. However, as an “aggregated loaf of bread or a moving and powerful bread,” the sword of Gideon became a symbol of victory. Moreover, a round loaf of barley bread is a ‘food’ and a hope for the hungry. The 300 warriors of Gideon are indeed the hope for the Israelites. To the Israelites who were starved politically, economically, and religiously, these 300 chosen warriors of Gideon were a great hope. Food becomes a longing hope for those who are starved. Food is power. It is a hope. Food is the driving force for life.
III. A round loaf of barley bread is a bread that is held in the hands of God.
When it says, “God has given the Midianites and the whole camp into his hands,” (v14) it means that Gideon’s men are in the hands of God. Likewise, the soldiers of faith in our church are in the hands of God. When anything is in God’s hands, it is utilized by Him. It becomes powerful when it is used by God. When we are in God’s hands, the blessing of prosperity and success will be upon us. When we are in God’s hands, we bring a great miracle. Didn’t the “miracle of 2 fish and 5 loaves of bread” happen when it was transferred from the hand of a child to the hands of God? The 300 warriors of Gideon are indeed a symbol of the movement of life. By God’s army performing the great work of the movement of life in the Midianite camp, we were able to hear the wonderful news. Gideon knelt down before God and thanked Him as he was ordered for this operation of victory. Then he blew the trumpet in the confidence of victory. He broke the jar. He held the torch high and shouted loudly. The result is God’s victory. Wouldn’t this be the victory of the movement of life, truth of the gospel, and of the cross?
Conclusion:
The gospel movement of the Christianity is a movement of a “round loaf of barley bread.” It is the barley bread of life that moves with great power, and it will eventually explode to destroy and defeat the camp of our enemy Satan, the enemy of the mankind and the enemy of God. This victory is accomplished only by the hands of God. Because God gave our church this “round loaf of barley bread” through His Word, the forces of darkness will explode only if the whole congregation unite as one “round loaf of barley bread” and tumble in. The camp of Satan will completely vanish. It will be completely destroyed. It will disappear without any trace. I sincerely hope that all of you will believe that only the bright Morning Star will be upon us individually, households and work places.

기드온의 300용사가 미디안 대군과의 싸움에서 승리한 본문 말씀을 통해, 우리는 가장 미약한 자가 가지는 큰 능력의 비결을 배우게 됩니다. 이는 모든 물욕(物慾)을 버리고 오직 사명감에만 충실할 때 제아무리 강한 세력일지라도 능히 물리칠 수 있음을 보여 주고 있습니다. 그러므로 기드온과 함께한 300의 용사는 기도하는 용사, 두려움을 모르는 용사, 한 덩어리의 보리떡 역사(役事)를 행한 용사들입니다.
1. 보리떡 한 덩어리는 미미한 존재를 가리킵니다.
보리떡 한 덩어리는 가난한 사람들의 양식으로서, ‘천한 신분’을 나타내고 있습니다. 선발된 300명의 기드온 용사들도 용감한 믿음의 군인들이었지만, 미디안 군대의 처지에서 볼 때는 보리떡처럼 미미하고 보잘것없는 존재에 불과했던 것입니다. 이는 마치 애굽 바로의 군대가 출애굽 하는 모세의 군대를 업신여긴 것과 같습니다(출 14:1-10). 앗수르 왕 산헤립이 유다 히스기야의 군대를 업신여긴 것과 같습니다(왕하 19:1-37, 사 37:37-38). 마치 블레셋의 장수 골리앗이 다윗과 그의 군인들을 업신여긴 것과 같습니다(삼상 17:24-51). 또한, 예수님 당시 대제사장과 서기관, 바리새인들이 예수를 세리의 친구요 죄인의 친구라고 업신여긴 것과 같습니다(마 11:19, 눅 15:2, 19:7). 세인들이 십자가 복음을 믿는 성도들을 미미한 한 덩어리의 보리떡에 지나지 않게 보는 것과 같습니다. 이는 마치, 수가 적은 기독 신자들이 좁은 길을 걸을 때 넓은 길을 걷는 이 세상 많은 사람에게 업신여김을 당하는 것과 같은 것이 아니겠습니까?
그러나 보리떡은 단합된 떡입니다. 하나님께서 인정하시는 떡이며 믿음의 떡입니다. 지칠 줄 모르고 두려움도 모르고, 오직 하나님만 바라보고 의지하며 믿고 따라가는 기드온 300용사의 보리떡! 똘똘 뭉쳐서 ‘한 덩어리’가 된 떡입니다(삿 7:13). 그러므로 그중에는 겁내는 자가 하나도 없습니다. 사기(士氣)가 왕성하며, 살아 계신 하나님만 의지하고 하나님께 기도하는 용사들입니다. 자기들에게 닥친 비상사태를 직시하고, 만반의 임전 태세를 완비하고 있는 자들입니다. 하나님을 믿는 신앙과 하나님의 영으로 충만하여 단결하고 있는 ‘한 덩어리의 보리떡’ 자체이기에, 그 누구도 이 보리떡 덩어리를 떼어 놓을 수가 없는 것입니다.
2. 보리떡 한 덩어리는 살아 있는 생명의 떡입니다.
“보리떡 한 덩어리가 미디안 진으로 굴러 들어와서 한 장막에 이르러”–본문 13절의 말씀입니다. 보리떡이 ‘굴러 들어왔다’는 것은 움직인다는 것입니다. 즉, 이 보리떡은 멈춰 서 있는 떡이 아니라 움직이는 떡입니다. 그러므로 살아 있는 떡, 생명의 떡, 하나님께서 역사하시는 임마누엘의 떡임을 알 수 있습니다. 하나님의 뜻에 순종하는 떡입니다. 십자가 생명의 떡으로서, 미디안 진을 향하여 움직이는 보리떡입니다.
이 보리떡은 위력이 있는 폭발물입니다. “한 장막에 이르러 그것을 쳐서 무너뜨려 엎드러뜨리니 곧 쓰러지더라”(:13) 하였습니다. 엄청난 위력입니다. 예상을 뒤엎는 폭발력이 있는 보리떡이 아닙니까? 아무도 예상할 수 없는 일을 기드온의 300명 보리떡이 해 낸 것입니다. 또한, 이 보리떡은 ‘하나님의 칼날’ 즉 ‘기드온의 칼날’이 되었습니다(:14). 기드온의 칼날이란 바로 승리를 상징하는 것입니다. 기드온의 300용사들은 미디안 사람들이 보기에 미미했습니다. 우습게 여기고 무시하고 업신여겼습니다. 그러나 단합된 한 덩어리의 떡, 움직이는 떡, 위력 있는 떡으로 기드온의 칼날은 승리의 상징이 되었습니다.
또한, 보리떡 한 덩어리는 ‘양식’으로서 굶주린 사람들에게 소망이 됩니다. 과연 기드온의 군대들은 이스라엘 백성의 소망들입니다. 정치적으로, 경제적으로, 종교적으로 굶주린 백성에게, 선발된 기드온의 300용사는 큰 소망입니다. 양식은 굶주린 사람에게 기다림이 됩니다. 양식은 힘입니다. 바로 소망입니다. 양식은 삶의 생명이 되는 것입니다.
3. 보리떡 한 덩어리는 하나님의 손에 쥐어져 있는 떡입니다.
“하나님이 미디안과 그 모든 군대를 그의 손에 붙이셨느니라”(:14)라는 말씀은 기드온의 군대가 하나님의 손에 있다는 것입니다. 우리교회의 군대가 이처럼 하나님의 손에 붙잡혀 있습니다. 무엇이든지 하나님의 손에 있을 때 하나님께서 쓰십니다. 하나님이 쓰실 때, 위력을 가져오게 됩니다. 하나님의 손에 있을 때, 만사형통의 축복이 임하는 것입니다. 하나님의 손에 있을 때, 큰 기적을 가져오게 됩니다. 오병이어의 기적도 어린 아이의 손에서 하나님의 손으로 옮겨졌을 때 일어난 것이 아닙니까?
기드온의 300용사는 실로 생명운동의 상징입니다. 하나님의 군대가 미디안의 군대 막사에서 위대한 생명 운동의 역사를 행하심으로, 우리에게 놀라운 축복의 소식을 들려주셨습니다. 기드온은 이 승리의 작전 지시를 받고, 엎드려 하나님께 감사를 드렸습니다. 그리고는 승리의 확신 속에서 나팔을 불었습니다. 항아리를 깨뜨렸습니다. 횃불을 높이 들고 큰 함성을 질렀습니다. 결과는 하나님의 승리입니다. 생명 운동, 복음 진리, 십자가의 승리가 아니겠습니까?
결론:
기독교 복음 운동은 한 덩어리 보리떡 운동입니다. 그것은 대단한 힘을 가지고 움직이는 생명의 보리떡이며, 마침내 폭발하여 우리 인류의 원수, 하나님의 원수인 사단의 진을 파괴하고 승리하게 될 것입니다. 그 승리는 하나님의 손에서만 이루어지는 승리입니다. 하나님께서는 말씀을 통해서 우리교회에도 한 덩어리 보리떡을 주셨기에, 전체 성도가 똘똘 뭉친 보리떡 한 덩어리가 되어 굴러가기만 하면 어둠의 세력은 폭발합니다. 사단의 진영이 완전히 사라집니다. 완전히 파괴됩니다. 흔적도 없어지고 맙니다. 오직 광명한 새벽별이 여러분의 개인과 가정과 직장에 임한다는 것을 믿으시기 바랍니다.
