Only God!
The whole Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, begins with “God.” Likewise, the commandments also originate from God. When we clearly realize this fact, we can live to serve “only God” at all times as it is stated in the first commandment of the Ten Commandments. Why do we have to serve “only God”? It is because He is our only Savior as He said, “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery!” and He clearly said, “You shall have no other gods before me.” If we are able to obey the first commandment properly, it would be too easy for us to obey the rest of them.
I. The first commandment is the basis for other commandments and the foundation for all morality.
The first commandment emphasizes on God’s character and unity. In other words, its content is to ‘know only God.’ Jesus is telling us clearly in Mk 12:29-30. “First, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.” Thus, what Jesus said then to “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength,” is what Jesus is telling us today. The first commandment of the Ten Commandments emphasizes on the character and unity of God. At the same time, it serves as the basis for all other commandments. Because serving God is the best blessing and a duty for a mankind, the rest of the nine commandments will be naturally obeyed if the first commandment is obeyed completely. That is why this commandment must be obeyed at all cost. The Bible stated that we should “risk our life” only on loving God, believing Him and obeying His commandments (Mt 22:37-38). On the contrary, if the first commandment is not obeyed, the life of faith and the rest of the commandments will collapse instantly like a building that has collapsed due to its unstable foundation. Hence, the first commandment is the basis and the root for all commandments. At the same time, it is the basis for all morality. Those who claim that “God is dead” and insist on the situation ethics and new virtues are those who do not acknowledge the first commandment. Such people exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles as stated in Rom 1:22-32. There cannot be any morality or ethics in the individuals or families of such people.
II. The calling of God is the ‘personal and individual calling.’
It is clearly recorded in v2-3 of today’s Scripture text that the recipient of God’s commandment is not the “whole congregation of Israel” but an individual “you.” For example, God did not say “Abrahams, the forefathers of faith!” but clearly said, “Abraham!” (Gen 22:1). Moreover, we also see in Exo 3:4 where God said “Moses! Moses!” to call one person as an individual. In the New Testament, God said, “Saul, Saul” and called a man on the streets of Damascus (Acts 9:4). What does this tell us? It means that God’s calling is the personal and individual calling. More specifically in terms of the Ten Commandments, it means 1) “You must start showing interests on the entire Ten Commandments,” and 2) “You should pay attention to each commandment.” Literally, it is “you” who were saved from Egypt, but it actually means “you” who were saved from destruction. Thus, God pointed to the oneness of faith by saying, “You shall have no other gods before Me.”
III. You must abandon all your idols, and let there be “only God.”
When it said in today’s Scripture text, “you shall have no other gods before Me” means, “only God” should be there. It means that we must know only God who led us from Egypt, the land of idolatry and sin and must worship only Him. The first reason that we must have only God is because there is sufficient evidence in the law of righteousness that created us (Ps 100:3). Because it is God who made us and we are His, we must follow only Him. Second, it is because God is the source of all blessings, and He gives us everything to benefit us. It is written in Ps 67:6-7, God gives us all harvest of the land, and He is the One who blesses us. Third, it is because we will receive curses and wrath when we do not serve only God. It is stated in Mal 2:2, “I will send a curse on you, and I will curse your blessings. I have already cursed them, because you have not resolved to honor Me.” Fourth, from the perspective of its necessity, we must serve only God. It is stated in 2Sam 22:32, “For who is God besides the Lord? And who is the Rock except our God?” Lastly, in order for us to know God accurately, we must know the Holy Trinity of God or the Holy Father, the Holy Son, and the Holy Spirit. We see many instances in the Bible where God was expressed in plural form (Gen 1:26, 3:22, 11:7, Isa 6:8). Thus, we can properly obey the first commandment when the knowledge to know God is known through the Holy Trinity of God through the Holy Father, the Holy Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Conclusion:
The first commandment which commands us to serve only God is the foundation of all commandments and the basis for all morality. However, in order for to properly obey this, we must fully know the Holy Trinity of God and fully serve the Holy Father, the Holy Son, and the Holy Spirit. When we fully know the God of Trinity- the Holy Father who chose us (Eph 1:3-6), the Holy Son who redeemed us and saved us with His blood (Eph 1:7-12), and the Holy Spirit who marked us with His seal as a deposit guaranteeing His promise (Eph 1:13-14)- we will be able to obey the first commandment so that we can live a life to defeat atheism and all other foreign gods but return glory only to God.
하나님만!
성경은 창세기 1장부터 계시록까지 ‘하나님’으로부터 시작되고 있습니다. 마찬가지로, 계명 또한 하나님께로부터 시작된 것입니다. 사람이 이 사실을 분명히 인식할 때, 십계명 중 첫 번째 계명의 말씀처럼 범사에 ‘하나님만’ 섬기며 살아갈 수 있습니다.
왜 ‘하나님만!’ 섬겨야 합니까? “나는 너를 애굽 땅 종 되었던 집에서 인도하여 낸 너희 하나님 여호와라!” 말씀하신 것처럼, 그분만이 우리의 구원자가 되시고, 그분께서 “너는 나 외에는 다른 신을 네게 있게 말지니라” 분명히 말씀하셨기 때문입니다. 이러한 첫 번째 계명만 올바로 지킨다면, 나머지 계명들을 지키는 것은 너무나 쉬운 문제입니다.
1. 첫째 계명은 다른 계명의 기본이며 모든 도덕의 근본입니다.
첫째 계명은 하나님의 인격성과 통일성을 강조해 주고 있습니다. 즉 ‘하나님만’을 알라는 내용이 담겨 있습니다. 이를 예수님께서 막 12:29-30에 정확히 말씀해 주고 있습니다. “첫째는 우리 하나님은 유일한 주시라” 하셨습니다. 그러므로 마음과 목숨과 뜻을 다하고 힘을 다하여 주 너의 하나님을 사랑하라는 말씀이, 예수님께서 오늘 우리에게도 들려주고 계시는 말씀입니다. 십계명 중 첫 번째 계명은 바로 이러한 하나님의 인격성과 통일성을 강조해 주는 말씀입니다. 동시에 다른 모든 계명의 기초 역할을 해 주고 있습니다. 하나님을 섬기는 것이 인간 최고의 축복이고 의무이므로, 이를 온전히 행하기만 한다면 나머지 아홉의 계명은 자연스럽게 지킬 수밖에 없는 것입니다. 그래서 이 계명은 ‘목숨을 걸고’ 지켜야 합니다. 성경에서는 오직 하나님을 믿고, 사랑하고, 하나님의 계명을 지키는 데만 ‘목숨을 걸라’ 말씀하셨습니다(마 22:37-38).
반대로, 첫째 계명을 지키지 못하면, 마치 기초가 부실하여 붕괴한 건물처럼, 모든 신앙생활과 나머지 계명들이 하루아침에 무너지고 맙니다. 그러므로 첫째 계명은 모든 계명의 기본 원인이며 뿌리 역할을 합니다. 동시에 모든 도덕의 근본이기도 합니다. ‘하나님은 죽었다’ 하며 상황 윤리나 신도덕을 주장하는 자들은 바로 이 첫째 계명을 인정하지 않는 자들입니다. 그러한 자들의 생활은 롬 1:22-32의 말씀처럼, 하나님의 영광을 썩어질 사람과 금수와 버러지 형상의 우상으로 바꾼 사람들입니다. 그들 개인이나 가정에는 어떠한 도덕과 윤리가 있을 수 없습니다.
2. 하나님의 부르심은 ‘개인적 부르심’입니다.
본문 2절과 3절에 보면, 하나님께서 계명을 주시는 대상은 이스라엘 백성 ‘전체’가 아니라 개인으로서, ‘너’라고 분명히 기록돼 있습니다. 예를 들어, 하나님께서는 “믿음의 조상 아브라함들아!” 하지 않으시고, 분명 ‘아브라함아!’라고 하였습니다(창 22:1).
또한, 출 3:4에서도, ‘모세야, 모세야’ 하시며 개인으로서 한 사람을 부르시는 장면을 볼 수 있습니다. 신약에서도, 다메섹 도상에서 ‘사울아, 사울아’ 하고(행 9:4) 한 사람을 부르셨습니다. 이는 무엇을 말해 주고 있습니까? 하나님의 부르심은 개인적 부르심이라는 뜻입니다. 구체적으로 십계명과 관련하여서는 1) ‘너는 십계명 전체에 관심을 가지고 시작하라’는 뜻이며, 2) ‘매 계명에 대해서 너는 관심을 가지라’는 말입니다. 문자적으로는 애굽에서 구원 받은 ‘너’지만, 뜻으로는 멸망에서 구원 받은 ‘너’라는 뜻입니다. 그래서 ‘다른 우상들을 네게 두지 말라’고 말씀하심으로써 신앙의 단일성을 가리키셨습니다.
3. 모든 우상을 버리고 ‘하나님만’을 있게 하라.
본문에서 “다른 신들을 네게 있게 말지니라” 하신 뜻은 ‘오직 하나님만을 있게 하라’는 것입니다. 우상숭배와 죄악의 땅 애굽 그곳에서 우리를 인도하신 하나님만 알고, 그분에게만 경배를 돌려야 한다는 뜻입니다. 이처럼 하나님만을 있게 해야 하는 이유는 첫째, 우리를 창조하신 공의의 법으로 볼 때 충분한 근거가 있는 것입니다(시 100:3). 하나님은 우리를 지으신 자요, 우리는 그의 것이기 때문에 당연히 그분만을 따라야 합니다.
둘째, 만복의 근원이시고, 모든 것을 우리에게 유익을 주기 위해 주시는 분이기 때문입니다. 시 67:6-7 말씀을 볼 때, 하나님은 땅의 모든 소산물을 주시는 분이시요, 우리에게 복을 주시는 분입니다. 셋째, 하나님만을 섬기지 않을 때는 저주와 진노를 받기 때문입니다. 말 2:2 말씀을 볼 때, “너희가 만일 듣지 아니하며 마음에 두지 아니하여 내 이름을 영화롭게 하지 아니하면 내가 너희에게 저주를 내려 너희의 복을 저주하리라”라고 하셨습니다.
넷째, 그 필요성의 측면에서 볼 때, 우리는 오직 하나님만을 섬겨야 합니다. 삼하 22:32 말씀을 볼 때, “여호와 외에 누가 하나님이며 우리 하나님 외에 누가 바위뇨?”라고 말씀하셨습니다. 끝으로, 우리가 하나님을 바로 알기 위해서는 성부, 성자, 성령–삼위일체의 하나님을 알아야 합니다. 성경에서 하나님은 여러 경우에서 복수로 표시된 것을 볼 수 있습니다(창 1:26, 3:22, 11:7, 사 6:8). 그러므로 하나님을 아는 지식이 성부와 성자, 성령을 통해서 이 삼위일체 신을 알아야 온전히 첫째 계명을 지킬 수 있습니다.
결론:
오직 하나님만 섬기라는 첫째 계명은 모든 계명의 기초요 도덕의 근본이 됩니다. 그러나 이를 온전히 지키기 위해서는 삼위일체 되시는 하나님을 온전히 알고, 성부, 성자, 성령 하나님 모두를 온전히 섬겨야만 합니다. 우리를 택해 주신 성부 하나님(엡 1:3-6), 당신의 피로 속량하시고 우리를 구원해 주신 성자 하나님(엡 1:7-12), 약속의 보증으로 인쳐 주시는 성령 하나님(엡 1:13-14)–삼위일체의 하나님을 온전히 알 때, 첫째 계명을 지켜 무신론이나 다른 모든 잡신을 물리치고 하나님께만 영광 돌리는 삶을 살 수 있습니다.
