Let Us Dream for the Glory of God
Among the many people who appear in both Testaments of the Bible, David was a blessed man who lived a truly turbulent life. He was born as the youngest son of the herdsman Jesse, spent his childhood in Bethlehem while he was loved by God, and was anointed by Prophet Samuel (1Sam 16:12-13). Later, he defeated Goliath the Philistine warrior and laid a political and military foundation as soon as he became the second king of Israel after King Saul’s death. David dreamt of a blessed dream in a peaceful time where his nation was stabilized, and he lived in peace in the palace he built; and it was his vision of faith to build the House of God.
I. David trusted the covenantal blessings.
By dreaming of the glorious dream to build the Temple of God, David received the “Davidic Covenant.” If we were to summarize the content of the blessing, God made David as the sovereign king of Israel, and He will strengthen the nation forever through his descendant. Moreover, God will enable the descendant of David to build the Temple; and he would become the son of God, and He becomes his father. Lastly, God would punish them if they commit sins but would never remove them from their throne. From the contents of the covenant God made with David through Prophet Nathan, we see 3 special expressions. First, it is the word “house” (Hebrew: Bayit בּיִת), which means not only David’s physical kinsfolk and his kingdom but the Temple of God. Second, it is the word “descendant” or “offspring” (Hebrew: Zera זְרַ), which refers to his son Solomon. Third, it is the word “kingdom” (Hebrew: Mamlakah מַמְלָכָה), which means territory, people and sovereignty, and it refers to David’s sovereignty at the same time. As you can see, the words “house, descendants, and kingdom” expressed in the Davidic covenant foretell the “Kingdom of God or the movement of the Church” which will be fulfilled in the New Testament through Jesus Christ, the descendant of David. From this, the climax of David’s life lies in the blessed covenant that God made with him through Prophet Nathan. In other words, the blessing that God will bless the house of David and his descendants so that his nation will be strong and prosperous was the climax of David’s life. As soon as David became a king, he strengthened national defense and internal affairs, built royal palaces; and while he enjoyed peace, he did not become arrogant or carried away with the present situation but set his heart on God instead to think of the House of God. At this time, God established Davidic Covenant through Prophet Nathan. This indeed is the dream for the glory of God. If the moment that the promise of God was upon David was the climax of happiness for David, we must also do our best to build the Temple of God or His House today, with the same heart as King David.
II. David prepared the House of God with faith.
God’s answer revealed through Prophet Nathan was “God does not want to dwell in a building built by a man” (2Sam 7:4-7). This was to declare that God is omnipresent. Nevertheless, we cannot help but thank God for promising Solomon the son of David with the blessing of temple construction for His name. Look at David’s attitude toward the temple construction. David began to prepare materials for the construction when Solomon was young. He has prepared a lot of materials including 100,000 talents of gold and 1 million talents of silver (1Chr 22:14). Not only that, David generously offered 3000 talents of gold of Ophir and 7000 talents of silver from his private assets to show how much he loved God (1Chr 29:3-5). David also appointed stonecutters to prepare dressed stone (1Chr 22:1-4). It is stated in 1Chr 22:14 that Solomon added more to this later. The father and the son had the same faith and a thankful heart and tried their best to build the Temple of God. My beloved Saints! The first virtue in building the Temple of God is loyalty. The outcome of faith is displayed as loyalty. David commanded his people that the people of Israel, from the highest noble men to the lowest commoners, must be under Solomon and God’s command, and vowed to faithfully execute God’s covenant or the blessing (1Chr 28:21). David, who prepared everything for the construction of God’s temple, offered thanksgiving prayer to God on his deathbed. From the text of 1Chr 29:10-29, he first praised the LORD God of his ancestors. Second, he thanked God that his kingship came from Him and thanked Him that the riches and fame of one’s life were in His hands. Third and foremost, he thanked God for having ability for him and his people to gladly offer for the Temple of God. It is because everything came from God (1Chr 29:14). Fourth, he sincerely thanked God for giving grace to the foreigners and the strangers who stay temporarily in this land to prepare for the construction of the Temple of God for His Holy name (1Chr 29:15-16). Moreover, we also see that the heart of David is pleased and thankful when he sees not only himself but also his people gladly obey the LORD and willingly offered (1Chr 29:17).
Conclusion:
The climax of David’s life was when he had a great dream for the glory of God. It was not a dream for himself but a dream for the House of God or a dream to build the Temple of God. To David who had such a dream, God granted him a blessing that He will establish his house, will give descendants, and will strengthen his throne. If the moment of receiving these blessings of the future was the climax of David’s life, I sincerely hope that this blessing will be upon all of you who have the same heart as David.
하나님의 영광을 위한 꿈을 꾸자
신구약성경에 나오는 수많은 인물 가운데 다윗은 참으로 파란만장한 삶을 산 축복의 사람입니다. 그는 목부(牧夫) 이새의 말째 아들로 태어나 베들레헴에서 유년기를 보내면서 하나님의 사랑을 받고, 사무엘 선지자에게 기름 부음을 받았습니다(삼상 16:12-13). 후에 블레셋의 장수 골리앗을 물리치고, 사울왕이 죽은 뒤 이스라엘의 두 번째 왕이 되자마자 정치적, 군사적 기틀을 마련했습니다. 다윗은 나라가 안정되고, 왕궁을 건축하여 평안히 거하게 되었던 평화로운 때에 다시 새로운 축복의 꿈을 꾸게 되었으니, 바로 하나님의 집 성전을 건축하고자 하는 믿음의 꿈이었습니다.
1. 다윗은 언약의 축복을 받았습니다.
다윗은 하나님의 전을 건축하고자 하는 영광의 꿈을 꿈으로써 이른바 ‘다윗 언약’이라고 하는 언약의 축복을 받게 되었습니다. 그 내용을 요약하면, 하나님께서 다윗을 이스라엘의 주권자로 삼으시며, 다윗의 후손을 통해 그 나라를 영원히 견고케 하신다는 것입니다. 또한, 다윗의 후손으로 성전을 건축케 하시며, 다윗의 후손은 여호와의 아들이 되고 여호와는 그의 아버지가 되신다는 것입니다. 끝으로, 범죄하면 징계는 하시지만, 그 위(位)는 절대 빼앗지 않겠다고 하셨습니다.
하나님께서 나단 선지자를 통해 다윗과 맺은 언약의 내용을 볼 때, 특별한 세 가지 표현을 볼 수 있습니다. 첫째, ‘집’(히브리어: 바이트)이란 표현으로, 다윗의 육적 가문과 다윗 왕국뿐 아니라 하나님의 성전까지를 뜻하는 말입니다. 두 번째는 ‘후손’, 또는 ‘자손’(히브리어: 제라)이란 말로, 그 아들 솔로몬을 가리키고 있습니다. 세 번째는 ‘나라’(히브리어: 마므라카)로서, 이는 영토와 국민과 주권을 의미하며, 동시에 다윗의 통치권을 가리키는 말이기도 합니다. 이처럼 다윗 언약에 표현된 ‘집, 후손, 나라’는 바로 신약시대에 다윗의 후손인 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 이루어질 하나님의 나라, 곧 교회 운동을 예표하고 있습니다.
이를 볼 때, 다윗 생애의 절정은 바로 하나님께서 나단 선지자를 통해 축복 언약을 맺어 주신 데에 있습니다. 즉, 다윗의 집과 후손을 축복하여 그 나라를 왕성케 하시겠다는 축복이야말로 다윗의 생애에 있어서 최고의 절정이었던 것입니다. 다윗은 왕위에 오르자마자 대내외적으로 국방과 내정을 바로잡고, 왕궁을 짓고, 평안을 누리고 있을 때 교만하거나 현재 상황에 도취하지 않고, 오히려 그 마음을 하나님께로 향하여 하나님이 거하실 집을 생각하기에 이르렀던 것입니다. 이때, 하나님께서 나단 선지자를 통해 축복의 언약을 주셨던 것입니다. 바로 이것이 하나님의 영광을 위한 꿈을 꾸는 것입니다. 하나님의 약속이 다윗에게 임하는 그 시간이 다윗에게 행복의 절정기였다면, 오늘 우리들 또한 다윗왕과 같은 마음으로 하나님의 성전, 하나님의 집을 짓기 위해서 최선을 다해야만 되겠습니다.
2. 다윗은 믿음으로 하나님의 집을 준비하였습니다.
나단 선지자를 통해 드러난 하나님의 대답은 “하나님께서는 사람이 지은 어떤 건축물 안에 거하시기를 원치 아니하신다”(삼하 7:4-7)는 것입니다. 이는 하나님의 무소부재(無所不在)하심을 알리기 위함이었습니다. 그런데도 하나님은 다윗의 아들 솔로몬에게 하나님의 이름을 위한 전 건축의 축복을 약속하셨다는 데 대해서 감사드리지 않을 수 없습니다. 성전 건축을 준비하는 다윗의 태도를 보십시오.
다윗은 솔로몬이 어려서부터 성전 건축에 필요한 자재를 준비하기 시작했습니다. 금 십만 달란트와 은 일백만 달란트 등 많은 재료를 준비했습니다(대상 22:14). 그뿐만 아니라, 다윗이 얼마나 하나님의 전을 사모하였던지, 자신의 사유재산 중에서 오빌의 금 삼천 달란트와 은 칠천 달란트 등을 아낌없이 바쳤습니다(대상 29:3-5). 다윗은 또 채석장에서 석재를 준비했습니다(대상 22:1-4). 나중에 솔로몬은 여기에 또 더하였다고 대상 22:14에 말씀하고 있습니다. 아버지나 아들이 같은 믿음, 감사하는 마음으로 하나님의 성전을 건축하는 데에 최선을 다했던 것입니다.
사랑하는 성도 여러분! 성전을 건축하는 데는 그 첫째가 충성입니다. 믿음의 결과가 바로 충성으로 나타납니다. 다윗은 백성에게 고하기를, 가장 높은 방백으로부터 가장 낮은 서민에 이르기까지 이스라엘 백성은 솔로몬의 명령과 여호와의 명령 아래 있어야 한다고 명령하고, 하나님의 축복인 언약을 충성스럽게 실행할 것을 맹세하였던 것입니다(대상 28:21).
하나님의 전 건축을 위해 모든 것을 준비한 다윗은 임종을 앞두고 하나님께 감사기도를 드렸습니다. 대상 29:10-29 말씀을 볼 때, 그 내용은 첫째, 조상의 하나님 여호와를 송축했습니다. 둘째, 자신의 왕권은 주께로 말미암았으며, 인생이 누리는 부와 귀가 주의 손에 있음을 감사했습니다. 셋째, 무엇보다도 자신과 백성이 주의 전을 위해 즐겁게 드릴 힘이 있음을 감사했습니다. 저들에게 있던 모든 것은 본래 주님의 것이었기 때문입니다(대상 29:14). 넷째, 이 땅에 잠시 머물렀다 가는 나그네 인생들이 거룩하신 하나님의 이름을 위하여 전을 건축할 수 있도록 준비하는 은혜를 받게 된 것을 진심으로 감사했습니다(대상 29:15-16). 그리고 자신뿐 아니라 그의 백성이 즐거이 주께 순종하고 드리는 것을 볼 때 종의 마음이 기쁘다며 감사하고 있는 장면을 보게 됩니다(대상 29:17).
결론:
다윗 생애의 절정은 하나님의 영광을 위한 위대한 꿈을 가지고 있을 때였습니다. 그 꿈은 결코 자신을 위한 꿈이 아니라 하나님의 집을 위한 꿈, 성전 건축의 꿈이었습니다. 바로 그러한 꿈을 가진 다윗에게 하나님은 집을 세우시고, 후손을 주시고, 나라의 위를 튼튼히 해 주시겠다는 축복을 허락해 주셨습니다. 이 축복의 미래를 받는 순간이 다윗 생애의 최고의 절정이었다면, 이 축복이 다윗과 같은 마음을 가진 모든 성도님에게 임하기를 바라겠습니다.
