The Living Hope of New Life and Blessed Hope
The world that we live in is full of uneasiness. The economy is very unstable, and it is hard to find an employment. The poor people become poorer. Moreover, the education system that rears the pillars and the foundations of the nation’s future so they can properly form their personality and character is unstable. The uneasiness of admission and employment has pressured the young people. The people are losing vitality due to environmental pollutions such as water and air pollution. It is the image of the modern people to live with the uneasiness of war and various diseases. The Lord personally told us that a difficult time would come (Mt 24:1-2). He said that the days of the Son of Man will be like the days of Noah (Lk 17:26-27). He said, “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea” (Lk 21:25). He also said that the people will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world (Lk 21:26). Then he said that day will come like a trap (Lk 21:31-36). If so, how will we overcome such uneasiness and fear of the mankind? This is the common task for the politics, education and culture, and all religions are trying to find an answer. However, what does the Bible say? What are the solutions that our Lord is presenting?
I. We must have strength of life like a mustard seed.
The hope of the mankind is the uncontaminated eternal life that God gives. We can resolve these issues only when we receive that life. A mustard seed is very small and seems unworthy. It is likewise for a handful of yeast. It seemed incompetent and invaluable. However, there is life in it. It is said that when it grows, the birds can perch in its shade. A handful of yeast has a power to ferment and it allows things to rise. Likewise, we will receive the blessed hope when unworthy people like us become grafted onto Jesus who is the eternal life. When we keep Jesus who is our eternal life, our genealogy will change (Jn 1:12). The incompetent people become competent and will receive the power, strength, and the power of the Holy Spirit. That is why the Lord said, “Everything is possible for one who believes” (Mk 9:23). Apostle Paul showed pride by saying “I can do all this through him who gives me strength” (Php 4:13). My beloved saints! When we retain the life of the Lord, we will transform our lowly body to be like His glorious body (Php 3:21). Hence, those faithful saints are very treasured people (Isa 33:6).
II. We must make every effort to enter through the narrow gate.
It is truly difficult to enter through the narrow gate (Mt 7:13-14). However, we must make every effort to enter. Because a narrow gate will lead to life, we must not give up. The gate of the church that is built on the stable where Jesus was born was very low and one needs to stoop down, lower his neck and back to enter. In order to meet the Lord, there must be humbleness for one to lower his neck and back. My beloved saints! A narrow gate can be entered by a humble person (Prov 22:4). There is a small gate next to a big gate in Jerusalem. It is so small that only one person can barely enters at a time. The people called it the “gate of the eye of a needle” (Mt 19:24). In order to pass through that gate, one needs to enter alone leaving all his burdens behind. Hence, enter through the narrow gate means to empty your heart. We need to empty our hearts like Jesus (Php 2:5). Hence, we will never be able to enter through the narrow gate unless we crucify ourselves on the cross. A sojourner’s luggage needs to be light. If it is heavy, he will fall down soon. My beloved saints! The gate before you is the narrow gate. We must pass through it. It is stated that if we don’t pass through the narrow gate and choose an easy way, it will lead us to destruction. The narrow gate is the gate of harsh suffering, but it will lead us to life once we pass through it.
III. We must walk on the path that God chose for us.
The Pharisees came to Jesus and told him of King Herod’s plot to kill Jesus. At that time, Jesus told them of the reason why he came to this earth. He said, “I must press on today, tomorrow and the next day” (Lk 13:33). The Lord said that no prophets will die outside Jerusalem because they have duties to fulfill that God gave them in Jerusalem to the redeem the sin of all mankind. Jesus’ heart was not disturbed even with Herod’s conspiracy. He only walked toward the cross. The plan of Jesus’ life for all mankind had no error or change. Without hesitation or commotion, Jesus followed according to the time that God had planned for him. Jesus announced his plan for his calling in Lk 13:31-33. He knew that today is the Father’s Will, as well as tomorrow and the next day. Jesus was very lonely. He said “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head” (Lk 9:58). Facing his cross, Jesus’ heart was saddened and troubled to the point of death. However, Jesus walked toward the narrow gate of the cross.
Conclusion:
Even though a mustard seed is very small and seemed invaluable, it has unlimited power of life. Passing through the narrow gate may seem stressful and difficult, but it leads to life. Although danger, persecution and loneliness may wait for us in the path of calling, but there is fulfillment and the promise of glory in the end. God gave us hope (Ps 119:49). I sincerely hope that all of you will hold onto hope to cope and overcome all worries and concerns.
새 생명의 산 소망과 복스러운 소망
지금 우리가 살아가고 있는 세상은 불안한 세대입니다. 경제는 흔들리고 일자리를 구하기가 어렵습니다. 가난한 사람들은 더욱 가난해지고 있습니다. 인격 형성을 시켜 나라의 장래 기둥과 보배를 만드는 교육마저도 흔들리고 있습니다. 입학과 취직의 불안은 젊은 사람들을 압박하고 있습니다. 물과 공기의 오염 등으로 환경은 오염되어 사람들이 생기를 잃고 살아가고 있습니다. 전쟁에 대한 불안, 각종 질병에 대한 불안 속에 살아가는 것이 현대인들의 모습입니다. 주님도 친히 힘든 세상이 온다고 말씀하셨습니다(마 24:1-2). 노아 때와 같이 인자의 임함도 그러할 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다(눅 17:26-27). “일월성신에는 징조가 있겠고 땅에서는 민족들이 바다와 파도의 우는 소리를 인하여 혼란한 중에 곤고하리라”(눅 21:25)고 하셨습니다. 사람들은 세상에 임할 일을 생각하고 기절할 것이라고 하셨습니다(눅 21:26). 그리고 그날은 덫과 같이 임한다고 하셨습니다(눅 21:31-36).
그렇다면 이러한 인간의 불안과 두려움을 어떻게 극복할 것입니까? 이것은 정치, 교육, 문화의 공통적 과제였고, 모든 종교가 그 해결책을 찾기 위해 애쓰고 있습니다. 그런데 성경은 뭐라고 말씀하고 있습니까? 주님이 제시하는 해결책은 무엇입니까?
1. 겨자씨 같은 생명의 힘이 있어야 합니다.
인류의 소망은 하나님이 주시는 오염되지 않는 영원한 생명입니다. 그 생명을 받아야만 문제를 해결할 수 있습니다. 겨자씨는 작고 초라하기 짝이 없습니다. 한 줌의 누룩도 마찬가지입니다. 무능하고 무가치해 보입니다. 그러나 그 속에 생명이 있습니다.
자라서 성장하면 공중의 새들이 와서 깃들여 안식한다고 했습니다.
한 줌의 누룩도 거기에 발효의 힘이 있어서 부풀게 합니다. 마찬가지로, 보잘것없는 우리가 영원한 생명이 되시는 예수님께 접붙임을 받을 때 복스러운 소망을 얻게 되는 것입니다. 우리의 영원한 생명 되신 예수를 소유하게 될 때 족보가 달라집니다(요 1:12). 무능한 자가 능력을 얻게 되고, 힘과 능력과 성령의 권세를 받습니다. 그래서 주님은 ‘믿는 자에게는 능치 못한 일이 없다’(막 9:23)고 하셨습니다.
사도 바울도 ‘능력 주시는 자 안에서 모든 것을 할 수 있다’고 자신감을 나타냈습니다(빌 4:13). 사랑하는 성도 여러분, 주님의 생명을 소유할 때 천하를 주고도 바꿀 수 없는, 죽지 않고 사는 영화의 몸이 될 수 있습니다(빌 3:21). 그러므로 믿는 성도는 보배로운 자입니다(사 33:6).
2. 좁은 문으로 들어가기를 힘써야 합니다.
좁은 문으로 들어가는 것은 참으로 힘든 일입니다(마 7:13-14). 그러나 들어가기를 힘써야 합니다. 좁은 문은 생명으로 인도하는 문이기 때문에 포기해서는 안 됩니다. 주님이 탄생한 마구간교회의 문은 낮아서, 고개를 숙이고 허리까지 굽혀야 들어갈 수 있습니다. 주님을 만나기 위해서는 고개를 숙이고 허리를 굽히는 겸손이 있어야 만날 수 있다는 뜻입니다.
성도 여러분, 좁은 문은 겸손한 자가 들어갈 수 있습니다(잠 22:4). 예루살렘성 대문 옆에 작은 문이 있습니다. 사람 한 사람이 겨우 통과할 수 있는 문입니다. 사람들은 그 문을 ‘바늘귀 문’이라고 불렀습니다(마 19:24). 그 문으로 들어가려면 짐을 내려놓고 맨몸으로 들어가야 합니다. 그러므로 좁은 문으로 들어가라는 말씀은 마음을 비우라는 뜻입니다. 예수님처럼 마음을 비워야 합니다(빌 2:5). 그러므로 내 자신을 십자가에 못을 박기 전에는 결코 좁은 문을 통과할 수 없습니다. 나그네는 짐이 가벼워야 합니다. 짐이 무거우면 얼마 못 가서 쓰러지고 맙니다.
사랑하는 성도 여러분, 여러분 앞에 놓인 문은 좁은 문입니다. 통과해야 합니다. 통과하지 않고 쉬운 길로 가면 멸망으로 인도한다고 했습니다. 좁은 문은 쓰디쓴 고난의 문이지만, 통과하면 생명에 이르는 문입니다.
3. 하나님이 정해 주신 길을 가야 합니다.
바리새인들이 예수께 찾아와서, 헤롯왕이 예수님을 죽이려는 음모를 꾸미고 있다고 알려 주었습니다. 이때 예수님은 이 땅에 오신 원칙을 말씀하셨습니다. “오늘과 내일, 모레는 내가 갈 길을 가야 한다”(눅 13:33).
주님은, 선지자가 예루살렘 바깥에서 죽는 법이 없지만 예루살렘에서 하나님이 정하신 계획에 따라 인류의 죄를 속죄하기 위해 갈 길을 가야 한다고 말씀하셨습니다. 헤롯왕의 음모에도 예수님의 마음은 동요하지 않았습니다. 오직 십자가를 향하여 걸어가셨습니다. 온 인류를 위한 주님의 삶의 프로그램은 추호도 오차나 변덕이 없었습니다. 하나님의 정해 놓은 시간에 따라 늦지 않게 흐트러지지 않고 좇아가셨습니다.
주님은 자기 사명의 프로그램을 눅 13:31-33에서 발표하신 것입니다. 주님은 오늘도 아버지의 뜻이고, 내일도 아버지의 뜻이고, 모레도 아버지의 뜻인 줄 알았습니다. 주님은 고독했습니다. “여우도 굴이 있고 공중의 새도 집이 있으되 인자는 머리 둘 곳이 없도다” 하셨습니다(눅 9:58). 주님은 십자가를 앞두고 마음이 답답하고 민망하여 죽을 지경이었습니다. 그러나 주님은 십자가의 좁은 문을 향하여 전진했습니다.
결론:
겨자씨는 작고 보잘것없지만 무한한 생명의 능력이 숨 쉬고 있습니다. 좁은 문을 통과하는 것은 긴장되고 힘든 일이지만, 생명에 이르는 길입니다. 사명의 길에는 위협과 환난, 고독이 기다리지만 완성과 영광의 약속이 있습니다. 하나님께서 우리에게 소망을 주셨습니다(시 119:49). 소망을 붙잡고 모든 불안과 염려를 극복하고 승리하는 역사가 있기를 바랍니다.
