Let Us Contend Earnestly for the Faith
The Book of Jude is comprised of letters written by Jude, Jesus’s own brother. Jesus’ brothers did not believe in Jesus at first (Jn 7:3-5). During the early times of Jesus’ public ministry when his mother and brothers came to see him, he did not meet them. Instead, he said, “Who is my mother and who are my brothers? For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and my mother” (Mt 12:46-50, Lk 8:19-21). However, after they witnessed Jesus’ crucifixion on the cross and his resurrection, they repented, recanted and began to believe. Through this, they received the Holy Spirit during the Pentecost and became important leaders in the Early Church. In order to warn the people of the Early Church about the dangers of falling into the teachings of the false teachers who quietly slipped in among them, Jude used many examples in his letter in today’s Scripture text to urge and to encourage them to contend earnestly for their faith.
I. The Israelites who were destroyed in the wilderness due to disbelief.
When the Israelites arrived at Kadesh Barnea, one person from each tribe was selected and sent to Canaan to explore the land for forty days. However, only Joshua and Caleb reported accurately in faith while the other ten spies instilled great disbelief into the hearts of the Israelites, put them in despair, and caused them to rebel against Moses (Num 14:1-5). God made an oath that those who tested Him and did not obey the Word would never be able to enter the Land of Canaan, and only Joshua and Caleb who completely obeyed would (Num 14:23-24). This is the reason that of the 603,550 men who left Egypt, all except for Joshua and Caleb died in the wilderness before they crossed the Zered Valley (Deut 2:13-15). They were not able to enter the Land of Canaan due to their sin of grumbling and complaining (Num 14:2-3). My beloved saints! We must not grumble or complain (1 Cor 10:10-11). Grumbling and complaining occurs when God is not in one’s hearts, which goes against our faith. Faith is to obey the promise of God until the end. We must believe until the end (Mt 24:13). Our congregation of Green Hill Presbyterian Church must look upon the kingdom of God that He promised and follow the path that our Lord leads us to until the end. The Israelites tried to abandon Moses, renounced their faith from God, and even tried to return to Egypt (Num 14:3-4). Jesus is the Way and the Truth (Jn 14:6). Only the Lord is the Truth and the Life. This teaches us the mindset of the sojourners of faith that cannot be recanted. The faith is like an adventure. The Israelites tried to choose stability over adventure. They chose reality over a dream. They longed for something that they could see rather than the promise of God.
II. We must maintain our posts.
God eternally bound the angels who left their posts and their dwelling and kept them in the darkness until the Judgment Day. Those who are entrusted with the duties must keep their posts and dwellings. We must not depart from our posts. We must not abandon our duties, but work diligently for it. When we fail to do so, they will be taken away. Peter denied Jesus, but wept and repented when he realized that what Jesus said came true. Peter restored his post. He needed the crows of the rooster. When a prodigal son left his position, encountered many hardships, and eventually returned to his father’s house, his father accepted him and restored his position (Lk 15:11-24). Those who cannot maintain their posts are the descendants of darkness. After Esau sold his birthright of the firstborn over a bowl of red stew, he was cursed for generations to come (Heb 12:16-17). Reuben, too, did not keep his position and lost his birthright as a firstborn when he defiled his father’s bed (Gen 49:3-4). The city of Sodom and Gomorrah and other neighboring towns that were immersed in sexual immorality were destroyed in the fire of sulfur while they were following the ways of perversion (Deut 29:23). We must not depart from our dwellings, but must maintain our posts. The people of Sodom and Gomorrah have followed the flesh. The men and women did not engage in normal relationships, but had perverted relationships with the beasts. Such behavior will bring destruction of faith. We are the image of God. The reason that God has made one even though he was a residue in his spirit was to get godly descendants (Mal 2:15).
Conclusion:
Balaam who followed his greed and Korah who rebelled against Balaam was reproached by a donkey when he devoured on the wages of wickedness (2 Pet 2:15-16). Korah, who was Moses’ cousin, rose up against Moses with Dathan, Abiram and On, who were the descendants of Reuben (Num 16:1-2). During this time, a fire from God came down and consumed the 250 men who were offering the incense. The ground beneath them split apart and the earth opened its mouth to swallow them alive together with their possessions, and they perished and were gone from the community (Num 16:20-35). Moses is the man of God and the symbol of the Law, the father of the wilderness, and the proxy of God who led the Israelites to the Land of Canaan (Deut 18:15). It is a frightening sin to rebel against Moses. They were like the clouds without water and the fruitless Autumn tree that are dead and will be uprooted. They are like the turbulent waves of the sea that pour out violent foams of shame. We must contend earnestly for the faith against the dark sin that make us abandon our posts and leave our dwellings.

유다서는 예수님의 친동생인 유다가 쓴 편지입니다. 예수님의 동생들도 처음에는 예수님을 믿지 못했습니다(요 7:3-5). 예수님의 모친과 동생들이 공생애 초기에 예수님을 만나러 왔을 때, 예수님은 ‘누가 내 모친이며 동생들이냐’고 하시고 ‘말씀을 믿음으로 듣고 있는 제자들이 모친이며 동생’이라고 말씀하시면서 믿음이 없는 그들을 만나지 않으셨습니다(마 12:46-50, 눅 8:19-21). 그러던 그들이 예수님의 십자가의 죽으심과 부활을 목격한 후 뉘우치고 돌이켜 예수님을 믿기 시작했습니다.
마침내 오순절에 성령을 받아 초대교회의 기둥 같은 지도자들이 되었습니다. 오늘 본문은 예수님의 동생인 유다가 가만히 들어온 거짓 교사들을 대항하여 믿음의 싸움을 하라는 격려의 편지입니다. 유다는 거짓 교훈에 빠지는 위험을 경고하기 위해 여러 가지의 사례를 들어 교훈하고 있습니다.
1. 불신으로 광야에서 멸망당한 이스라엘 백성.
이스라엘 백성이 가데스 바네아에 도착했을 때 한 지파에서 한 명씩 12명을 뽑아 40일간 가나안을 정탐토록 하였습니다. 그런데 여호수아와 갈렙만이 믿음으로 정확하게 보고했지, 나머지 열 명은 이스라엘에 불신을 심어 주고 낙심케 하여 폭동이 일어나게 했습니다(민 14:1-5). 하나님은 하나님을 시험하고 말씀을 청종치 아니한 사람들은 결단코 가나안 땅에 들어가지 못하고, 온전히 순종한 여호수아와 갈렙만이 들어간다고 맹세하셨습니다 (민 14:23-24). 그래서 애굽에서 나온 603,550명 중 여호수아와 갈렙을 제외한 전체가 세렛 시내를 건너기 전에 모두 광야 진중에서 죽었습니다(신 2:13-15). 그들이 가나안에 못 들어간 것은 원망과 불평의 죄 때문이었습니다 (민 14:2-3). 그러나 여호수아와 갈렙은 자신의 부모들이 원망과 불평을 토해 내도 동조하지 않았습니다.
사랑하는 성도 여러분, 원망하거나 불평해서는 안 됩니다 (고전 10:10-11). 원망과 불평은 마음에 하나님이 계시지 않기 때문에 생기는 것으로서 믿음을 거스릅니다.
믿음이란 하나님의 약속을 끝까지 믿고 따르는 것입니다. 끝까지 믿어야 합니다 (마 24:13). 평강제일교회 성도들은 하나님이 약속하신 하나님 나라를 바라보며 주님이 인도하시는 대로 끝가지 따라가야 합니다.
이스라엘 백성은 모세를 외면하고 하나님을 향한 마음과 믿음을 돌이켜 애굽으로 돌아가려 했습니다 (민 14:3-4). 예수님이 곧 길이요 진리입니다(요 14:6). 주님만이 참이고 생명입니다. 이것은 돌아갈 수 없는 신앙 순례자의 정신을 우리들에게 가르쳐 주고 있습니다. 신앙은 모험입니다. 이스라엘 백성은 모험보다도 안전을 선택하려 했습니다. 꿈보다는 현실을 선택한 것입니다. 하나님의 약속보다는 눈에 보이는 것을 원했습니다.
2. 자기 자리를 지켜야 합니다.
자기 지위를 지키지 아니하고 자기 처소를 떠난 천사를 하나님은 영원한 결박으로 결박하여 끝 날의 심판 때까지 흑암에 가두었습니다.
성도 여러분, 모든 직분자들은 자기의 지위와 처소를 지켜야 합니다. 자기 맡은 일을 이탈하면 안 됩니다. 직무를 유기하지 말고, 사명을 다하여 합니다. 사명을 다하지 못하면 직분을 빼앗깁니다.
베드로는 예수님을 부인하다가 예수님의 말씀이 맞는 것을 보고 가슴을 치며 통곡하면서 회개를 하였습니다. 베드로는 자기 자리를 되찾은 것입니다. 그에게는 닭 울음소리가 필요했습니다.
자기 지위를 떠났던 탕자는 고생한 후 뉘우치고 다시 아버지 집으로 돌아올 때 아버지가 받아 주고 지위를 회복해 주었습니다 (눅 15:11-24). 자기 지위를 지키지 못하는 사람은 어두움이 후예들입니다.
에서는 팥죽 한 그릇에 장자권을 팔았다가 자자손손 저주를 받았습니다(히 12:16-17). 르우벤도 자기 지위를 지키지 못하고 아비의 침상을 더럽혀 장자권을 상실하고 말았습니다(창 49:3-4). 음란에 빠져 세월 가는 줄 모르던 소돔과 고모라와 이웃 도시들은 다른 색을 좇아가다 유황불에 멸망을 당했습니다(신 29:23).
사랑하는 성도 여러분, 처소를 떠나지 말고 자기 지위를 지켜야 합니다. 소돔과 고모라 사람들은 육신을 따라갔습니다. 남녀가 정상적인 사랑을 하지 않고, 부부 생활을 해도 짐승과 같이 이상야릇한 짓을 했습니다. 그러한 것들이 신앙의 타락을 가져오게 합니다. 우리는 하나님의 형상입니다. 하나님은 영이 유여하실지라도 하나만 지으신 것은 경건한 자손을 얻기 위함이었습니다 (말 2:15).
결론:
욕심을 따라 산 발람과 반기를 든 고라의 교훈
발람은 불의의 삯을 사랑하다가 나귀의 책망을 들었습니다 (벧후 2:15-16). 모세와 사촌지간인 고라는 르우벤 자손 다단과 아비람, 온과 함께 당을 짓고 모세를 대적했습니다 (민 16:1-2). 그러자 하나님께로부터 불이 나와서 분향하는 250인을 사르고, 그에게 속한 사람들은 땅이 갈라져 산 채로 음부에 빠져 멸망을 당하였습니다 (민 16:20-35). 모세는 하나님의 사람이고, 율법의 상징인 동시에 광야의 아버지로서 가나안 땅으로 인도하는 하나님의 대행자입니다 (신 18:15). 이러한 모세를 대적하는 것은 무서운 죄입니다.
그들은 바람에 불려 가는 물 없는 구름이요 죽고 또 죽어 뿌리까지 뽑힌 열매 없는 가을 나무들입니다. 자기의 수치의 거품을 뿜는 바다의 거친 물결로서 흉측한 자들입니다. 우리는 우리의 처소를 이탈하게 하고 지위를 벗어나게 하는 어두운 죄와 힘써 싸워야 합니다.
