The Refuge for the Saints
Isaiah 26:19-20
We can see that even a mere trifle like a rooster would raise its wings highly in desperate and frantic attempt to protect its chick when it detects danger because it considers its chick precious. When the beast loves its young in such a way, do you think our God will abandon His children and leave them in danger without preparing for the refuge? Today’s scripture text shows the loving hand of God that prepared the refuge for the saints and guided them there. When God commanded Noah to build an ark when He prophesied the judgment of the flood to Noah, it is identical to alerting him to prepare for a “safe haven” that can protect him from that judgment. By hearing it with sincerity and truly obeying it, Noah was able to receive an abundant blessing to easily overcome it during the tribulation of the judgment of the flood. It is because God allowed him to have a refuge.
I. Wherever the Word dwells is the “refuge”
According to Jung-Gam Rok, a Book of prophecies written during mid part of Joseon Dynasty, there are about 10 refuge sites in South Korea alone; so when the people hide there, they will be protected from any threats. Moreover, some people assert that when the final war such as the Battle of Armageddon that is mentioned in the Bible occurs, then they can move to a neutral nation such as Switzerland. However, the Bible states that any geographical place can never be a refuge. No matter how secretive and safe this place may be, you cannot escape from the judgment of God if you have sin. Thus, a biblical meaning of a refuge is not referring to a geographical region, but it tells us that Jesus Christ himself will be our eternal refuge. It is identical to the Land of Goshen which is the part of Egypt that became the refuge for the Israelites when God protected the land from the plagues. Also, although Daniel’s 3 friends were thrown into the furnace and Daniel was thrown into the lion’s den, it became a safe haven when God was with them and sealed the mouth of a lion with the Word of command. Like the lyrics of a hymnal “Wherever my Lord Jesus is, it is heaven,” wherever Jesus is and where the Word dwells is the spiritual refuge. Those who are allowed to enter such refuge will receive the blessing that their time of tribulation and suffering will be reduced. When we see Mt 24:21-22, if God does not reduce the days of distress, no one will receive salvation; and the days of distress will be reduced for those who are chosen. Hence, a reduction of days does not mean the number of days are shortened like the 10 days worth of suffering will be decreased to 5 days of suffering. Instead, it means that you will receive 10 days of suffering equally, but will be able to easily overcome that suffering and the pain of tribulation will not be applicable to you. Therefore, no matter what type of situations and the circumstances that the saints are faced with, the suffering will never be upon them and will always be protected in the safe haven when they always walk with Jesus and grasp only onto the Word.
II. Various types of refuge that appear in the Bible
1) Noah’s ark- God commanded Noah to build an ark for the preparation for the judgment of the flood that is to come; and because Noah was saved from the judgment of the flood by building the ark, the ark of Noah foreshadows the refuge of the Last Days.
2) The Land of Canaan that was given to the Israelites- The Land of Canaan that was divided up equally to 12 tribes after conquering 7 nations of Canaan led by Joshua and Caleb is also a spiritual refuge.
3) The Land of Goshen where the Israelites resided- When the Israelites resided separately in the Land of Goshen after they acquired food with the help of Joseph during 7 years of famine, they were protected from 10 Plagues.
4) The Land of Zoar that Lot entered- When God saw the wickedness of the people of the City of Sodom and Gomorrah and judged them with fire and sulfur raining down, He tried to pull Lot and his family out of there and lead them to the safe haven already prepared for them with abundant grace of angels. However, Lot wanted to go to nearby Land of Zoar and he was allowed, so there became the place of refuge. When we see this, we see God poured more grace and kindness on to Lot after He pulled him out from there.
5) A cistern that Jeremiah fell into (Jer 38:6)- The government officials and the king who covered their ears to the prophecies of Jeremiah threw him into the cistern. However, because it was a dry cistern without water, it became a safe haven for Jeremiah instead and he stayed there in peace and received revelations.
6) The furnace that Daniel’s three friends were in (Dan 3:26-27)- The safe haven for Daniel’s 3 friends was a furnace that was 7 times hotter. The soldiers who threw them into the furnace were burned to death, but they received the blessing that not even a strand of hair was blackened because God was with Daniel’s 3 friends.
7) The lion’s den that Daniel was thrown into (Dan 6:22-23)- Daniel too was thrown into the lion’s den but he was protected by the lions instead and the den actually became a safe haven for Daniel because God ruled over the lions.
Conclusion:
By putting the seals on the foreheads of His children, God protected them until the end from the final suffering, and saved them by leading them to the safe haven that is already prepared for them. The voice of Loving God who urges us to “come out my people” in Rev 18:4 is the voice of calling that leads us to the spiritual safe haven (Rev 7:16). When we hear such voice, like Noah and Lot who received salvation when they were forewarned about the things that have not yet seen but obeyed, there must be the Work of obedience in us. It is the blessing given to those who have the faith like Lot who ran the one day journey to enter the Land of Zoar the safe haven by obeying the Word “do not look back” until the end even though his wife became a pillar of salt (Gen 19:15-23).
성도의 피난처
사 26:19-20
하찮은 미물에 지나지 않는 닭도 자기 새끼를 귀하게 여기기 때문에 어떤 위험이 닥쳤을 때는 날개를 쳐들고 필사적으로 보호하는 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 짐승도 자기 새끼를 사랑함이 이러한데, 하물며 하나님께서 자기 자녀들을 보호하심에 있어 예비처도 준비하시지 않고 멸망 가운데 방치하시겠습니까? 오늘 본문은 성도의 피난처를 준비하시고 그곳으로 인도하시는 하나님의 따뜻한 사랑의 손길을 보여 주고 있습니다. 노아에게 홍수 심판을 예언하시며 ‘방주를 지으라’고 말씀하시는 것은 그 심판에서 보호받을 수 있는 ‘예비처’를 준비하라는 말씀과도 같습니다. 노아는 그 말씀을 전심으로 듣고 순종하므로 홍수 심판의 환난 가운데서도 넉넉히 이길 수 있는 축복을 받았습니다. 그것은 하나님께서 그에게 예비처를 허락하셨기 때문이다.
1. 말씀이 머무는 곳이 바로 피난처입니다.
정감록을 보면, 우리나라의 남한에만 열 군데의 피난처 즉 ‘십승지지(十勝之地)’가 있어서 이곳에 피하면 어떠한 화도 면할 수 있다는 내용이 나옵니다. 또 어떤 사람들은, 성경에서 말하는 마지막 아마겟돈 전쟁이 일어나게 되면 스위스 같은 중립국으로 피하면 된다고 주장하기도 합니다. 하지만 성경은 그 어떤 지리적인 장소도 결코 피난처가 될 수 없다고 말씀하고 있습니다. 아무리 은밀하고 안전한 곳에 있을지라도, 죄가 있다면 하나님의 심판을 결코 피할 수 없는 것입니다. 그러므로 성경적 의미의 피난처는 어느 지역을 말하는 것이 아니라, 예수 그리스도 자신이 우리의 영원한 피난처가 됨을 말씀하고 있습니다. 이는 마치, 같은 애굽 땅이지만 고센 땅에는 재앙이 임하지 않도록 지켜 주실 때 그곳이 이스라엘의 피난처가 되었듯이, 다니엘의 세 친구들이 풀무불에 던져지고 다니엘이 사자 굴에 던져졌지만 하나님이 함께해 주시고 말씀으로 사자를 명하여 입을 봉하실 때 그곳이 신령한 피난처가 되는 것과 같습니다. “내 주 예수 모신 곳은 그 어디나 하늘나라”라는 찬송가 가사처럼, 예수님께서 함께해 주시고, 말씀이 함께하는 곳이 바로 신령한 예비처가 되는 것입니다.
이러한 예비처에 들어가게 된 성도들은 환난의 때를 감해 주시는 축복을 받게 됩니다. 마 24:21-22 말씀을 볼 때, 하나님께서 그 환난의 날들을 감해 주시지 않으면 누구도 구원을 얻지 못하지만, 택하신 자들을 위해서는 그 날짜를 감해 주십니다. 여기서 날짜를 감해 주신다는 것은 10일 환난 받을 것을 5일로 감해 주는 것과 같이 환난의 때를 감축시켜 주는 것이 아니라, 10일 동안 동일하게 환난을 받되 그 환난을 능히 견딜 수 있고 환난의 고통이 해당하지 않도록 해 주신다는 뜻입니다. 그러므로 성도들은 어떤 환경에 처해 있더라도 예수님과 늘 동행하고, 말씀만을 붙잡고 살 때 결코 환난이 임할 수 없고 늘 예비처에서 보호를 받는 축복을 입게 됩니다.
2. 성경에 나타난 다양한 예비처
1) 노아의 방주
하나님은 장차 임할 홍수 심판에 대하여 노아에게 방주를 건축하라 하셨고, 노아는 방주를 건축함으로 홍수 심판 가운데서도 구원함을 얻을 수 있었기 때문에, 노아의 방주는 끝날 예비처의 그림자가 됩니다.
2) 이스라엘에게 주어진 가나안 땅
여호수아와 갈렙을 중심으로 이스라엘이 가나안 7족속을 정복하고 12지파에게 분배한 가나안 땅 또한 신령한 피난처가 됩니다.
3) 이스라엘 백성이 거한 고센 땅
이스라엘 백성이 요셉으로 인해 7년 흉년 가운데서도 식량을 얻고 고센 땅에 따로 거하는 가운데 10가지 재앙으로부터 보호를 받았습니다.
4) 롯이 들어간 소알 땅
하나님께서 소돔·고모라성의 죄악상을 보시고 불과 유황을 비같이 내려 심판하실 때, 천사의 강권적인 은혜로 롯과 그의 가족을 이끌어내서 예비하신 곳으로 인도하고자 했습니다. 하지만 롯이 가까운 소알 땅으로 가기를 원할 때 허락을 받으므로 그곳이 예비처가 되었던 것입니다. 이를 볼 때, 하나님은 롯을 이끌어내신 후에 더욱 많은 인자와 은혜를 부어 주셨음을 알 수 있습니다.
5) 예레미야가 빠진 구덩이(렘 38:6)
예레미야의 예언에 귀를 막은 조정백관들과 왕이 예레미야를 웅덩이에 집어 던졌지만, 그곳은 물이 없는 웅덩이였기에, 오히려 예레미야는 평안한 가운데 그곳이 예비처인 줄 알고 지내므로 계시를 받게 됩니다.
6) 다니엘의 세 친구가 들어간 풀무불(단 3:26-27)
다니엘의 세 친구의 피난처는 7배나 뜨거운 풀무불이었습니다. 오히려 이들을 집어넣은 병사들은 그 불에 타죽었지만, 다니엘의 세 친구들은 하나님께서 함께해 주시므로 머리털 하나 그을림 없이 보호받는 예비처의 축복을 받았습니다.
7) 다니엘의 사자 굴(단 6:22-23)
다니엘 또한 사자 굴에 던짐을 받았지만, 하나님께서 주장해 주시므로 오히려 사자의 보호를 받는 예비처가 되었습니다.
결론:
하나님께서는 당신의 자녀들의 이마에 인을 치심으로 마지막 환난에서 끝까지 보호해 주시고, 그들을 예비하신 피난처로 인도하심으로 구원해 주십니다. 계 18:4에서도 “내 백성아 빨리 나오라” 권고하시는 하나님의 사랑의 음성은 바로 우리를 신령한 예비처로 인도하시는 부르심입니다(계 7:16). 이러한 음성을 들을 때, 보지 못하는 일에 경고를 받고 순종함으로 구원을 얻은 노아나 롯과 같이 순종하는 역사가 있어야만 하겠습니다. 자기 아내가 소금기둥이 되었지만 ‘뒤를 돌아보지 말라’는 말씀에 끝까지 순종하여 만 하룻길을 달려 소알 땅, 예비처에 들어간 롯과 같은 믿음을 소유한 자에게 주어지는 축복입니다(창 19:15-23).
