Let Us Not Lose Three Opportunities
Hosea 6:1-3 Isaiah 1:2-6
God gives 3 opportunities and 3 punishments to humans. If we recant and return to God through these 3 opportunities that are allotted for us, we will live; however, if we lose all 3 opportunities, we are destined to die as a result of God’s punishment to rip us apart and strike us as it is stated in Hose 6:1-2. If so, let us examine together what those 3 opportunities are that God allotted us humans with.
I. Due to a fact that we lost those 3 opportunities, Jesus suffered, was crucified and died on the cross for us.
If we look at today’s scripture text, Hos 6:1-2, we can see that 3 types of punishments will fall on those people who do not obey the Word and live away from God. First, it is to rip them apart. Second, it is to strike them, and lastly, it is to kill them. Because a wage of sin is death (Rom 6:23), we are destined to die ultimately when we don’t comprehend and not recant at the end. By sending His One and Only Son Jesus Christ to this earth and making him carry all our pain and suffering, God gave opportunities for us to understand. Nevertheless, the people were not able to grab that first opportunity and comprehend, so they flogged him with the whips and ripped him instead by hitting him with the fists, with the crown of thorns and with the nails. Second of all, Jesus was penalized with assaults. Even though Jesus is God Himself, Jesus was struck with prayer, got even beaten up for the people, and many people struck him with their lips saying he “devours on food and wine.” When this second chance was not secured and the people did not listen to Jesus, they ultimately lost the third chance; and the third punishment was upon the Lord. As a result, Jesus was destined to be crucified on the cross and die. As you can see, God gave us 3 opportunities like these; however, God made Jesus carry the punishments that were destined to be upon us due to our ignorance and inability to comprehend.
II. Adam and Eve lost all 3 opportunities.
God gave 3 opportunities to Adam and Eve, the ancestors of mankind. The first opportunity was given when God called Adam, “Adam, where are you?” in Gen 3:9. When God called Adam like this, it was not because God did not know where Adam was, but He wanted to give Adam a chance to repent even though He know everything. When we look at Ps 139:1-11, it is stated “You know when I sit down and when I rise up; You understand my thought from afar. You scrutinize my path and my lying down, And are intimately acquainted with all my ways.” Nevertheless, the people think God is unable to see and think (Ps 94:7-9). That is why God gave Adam a second chance again, and that was when He asked, “Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” (Gen 3:11). However, Adam lost even the second chance. Adam shifted all the blame to his wife and didn’t even feel guilty (Gen 3:12). So as the third and the final chance, God reproached the woman (Gen 3:13). It is because God thought that if He reproached Eve and held her accountable, Adam would recant and confess because she is his beloved wife. However, Adam who is Eve’s husband neither did not embrace her, neither assumed responsibility for her, nor did he repent, so he was ultimately got evicted from the Garden of Eden and became a main cause that brought death to this earth.
III. Of the 3 opportunities, Job secured the last chance and was able to receive blessing.
God gave three opportunities to Job for him to understand, but he was not able to understand until the second chance. Job was able to receive two-fold blessing than before when he grabbed the third and the final chance and repented. The first opportunity was given to Job when God struck all his children at once (Job 1:1-19). The second chance was given to Job when God struck him with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head (Job 2:6-7). From Job 4-37, we see that he was not able to understand due to his arrogance even though God gave him two chances through these punishments and did not even speak one word of repentance or showed remorse for his actions to the end. His stubborn attitude of “I am not at fault” shows that he is full of arrogance that leads him to destruction (Jam 5:6) and also shows that he did not realize that God gave him an opportunity to repent through his friends. That is why God reproached him for the last and the final time by saying, “This far you may come and no farther; here is where your proud waves halt” (Job 38:11). If Job was not able to grab this final opportunity, he has nothing left but the punishment of death. However, Job grabbed this last chance and truly and wholeheartedly repented. He earnestly repented by saying, “Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes” (Job 42:6). Through this short and condensed phrase, not only Job escaped from God’s judgment but also received two-fold blessing.
Conclusion:
Like an old proverb that says, “an opportunity will enter through the front door and exits through the rear door,” we must not lose this opportunity that brings God’s love and blessing and became the believers that bear fruits. If so, I would like all of you to understand through today’s message, the opportunities that are allotted for you so that you can avoid the judgment like Job; and not only you receive blessings but return great glory to God as well.
세 번의 기회를 놓치지 말라
호 6:1-3, 사 1:2-6
하나님께서는 인간에게 세 번의 기회를 주시고 또한 세 번의 벌을 내리십니다. 허락하신 세 번의 기회를 통해 돌이켜 하나님에게 돌아오면 살지만, 그 기회를 다 놓쳐 버리면 호 6:1-2 말씀처럼 하나님께서 우리를 찢으시고 치신 결과로 죽을 수밖에 없는 것입니다. 그렇다면 하나님께서 우리 인간에게 허락하신 세 번의 기회는 어떠한 것인지 함께 상고해 보겠습니다.
1. 세 번의 기회를 놓친 결과로 예수님께서 우리를 대신해서 고난을 받으시고 십자가에 달려 돌아가셨습니다.
오늘 본문 호 6:1-2을 보면, 말씀을 순종하지 않고 하나님을 등지고 사는 사람들에게는 세 가지 벌이 내려짐을 볼 수 있습니다. 첫째는 찢어 버리는 것이며, 둘째는 치는 벌을 주시며, 마지막 세 번째는 죽이는 벌을 내리십니다. 즉 죄의 삯은 사망이기 때문에(롬 6:23) 끝까지 깨닫지 못하고 돌이키지 않을 때는 결국 죽을 수밖에 없는 것입니다.
하나님께서는 당신의 외아들 예수 그리스도를 이 땅에 보내셔서 우리를 대신해서 모든 질고를 지게 하심으로 우리가 깨달을 수 있는 기회를 주셨습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 사람들은 그 첫 번째 기회를 잡아채지 못하고 깨닫지 못하므로 오히려 그분을 채찍으로 내려치고 주먹으로, 가시관과 못으로 쳐서 찢고 말았습니다. 두 번째로는, 예수님께서 치는 벌을 받게 되었습니다. 예수님이 하나님 자신임에도 불구하고 기도로 치고, 나를 대신하여 얻어맞기도 했으며, 많은 사람들이 “먹기를 탐한다, 포도주를 즐기는 사람이다” 하며 입으로 수없이 예수님을 쳤던 것입니다. 이 두 번째 기회마저 붙잡지 못하고 예수님의 말씀을 듣지 않을 때, 결국 세 번째 기회까지 놓치고 세 번째 벌이 주님께 임하게 되었습니다. 그 결과로 십자가에 못 박혀 죽으실 수밖에 없었다면, 하나님께서는 이처럼 우리에게 세 번의 기회를 주셨고, 우리가 깨닫지 못한 결과로 우리에게 내려져야 할 형벌을 예수님이 대신 짊어지게 하셨던 것입니다.
2. 아담과 하와는 세 번의 기회를 다 놓치고 말았습니다.
하나님께서는 인류의 시조 아담과 하와에게도 세 번씩이나 기회를 주었습니다. 그 첫 번째 기회는 “아담아 네가 어디 있느냐?”(창 3:9)라고 불러 주신 것입니다. 하나님께서 이처럼 아담을 부르신 것은 그가 있는 곳을 아시지 못해서가 아니라, 다 아시지만 회개할 기회를 주시기 위해서였습니다. 시 139:1-11 말씀을 볼 때, 하나님은 나의 앉고 일어섬과 생각, 나의 길과 눕는 것까지 다 감찰하시며 아시는 분이라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 그런데도 사람들은 하나님께서 보시지 못하고 생각하시지 못할 것이라고 여기는 것입니다(시 94:7-9).
그리하여 하나님께서는 다시 두 번째 기회를 주셨는데, 그것은 “내가 너더러 먹지 말라 명한 그 나무 실과를 네가 먹었느냐”(창 3:11)라고 물으신 것입니다. 그러나 아담은 두 번째 기회마저 놓쳐 버리고 모든 책임을 아내에게 전가하고, 아무런 죄책감도 느끼지 못했습니다(창 3:12).
그래서 마지막 세 번째 기회로 하나님께서는 여자를 책망하셨습니다(창 3:13). 이는 하와에게 책임을 추궁하시면, 아담이 사랑하는 자기의 아내이기 때문에 잘못을 뉘우치고 고백하리라고 생각하셨기 때문인데, 남편 된 아담은 끝끝내 하와를 감싸 주거나 대신 책임지지 못하고 회개하지 않아, 결국 에덴동산에서 추방당하고 이 땅에 죽음을 가져온 장본인이 되고 말았던 것입니다.
3. 욥은 세 번의 기회 중 마지막을 붙잡아 복을 받게 되었습니다.
욥에게도 세 번의 깨달을 수 있는 기회를 하나님께서 주셨는데, 두 번째까지는 깨닫지 못하다가 마지막 세 번째 기회를 붙잡고 회개한 결과로 그는 처음보다 배나 되는 큰 복을 받게 되었습니다.
욥에게 주어진 첫 번째 기회는 그의 모든 자녀들을 한꺼번에 치시는 사건을 통해서 주어졌습니다(욥 1:1-19). 두 번째 기회는 욥을 쳐서 발바닥부터 정수리까지 악창이 나게 하신 징계를 통해서 주어졌습니다(욥 2:6-7). 이처럼 두 번씩이나 징계를 통해서 기회를 주셨지만, 욥은 교만하여 깨닫지 못하고 끝까지 한마디의 회개나 뉘우침이 없음을 우리는 욥기 4장-37장을 통해서 발견할 수 있습니다. “나는 아무런 잘못도 없다” 하는 욥의 완고한 태도는 멸망의 앞잡이 노릇을 하는 교만으로 꽉 차 있음을 보여 주며(약 5:6), 또한 하나님께서 친구들을 통해 회개할 수 있는 기회를 주신 것을 몰랐음을 말해 주고 있습니다. 그래서 하나님께서는 마지막으로 “네가 여기까지 오고 넘어가지 못하리니 네 교만한 물결이 여기 그칠지니라”(욥 38:11)라고 책망하셨습니다. 이 마지막 기회마저 붙잡지 못하면 욥에게는 죽음의 재앙밖에 남지 않게 되는데, 욥은 이 마지막 기회를 붙잡고 진심으로 회개했습니다. 이에 욥은 “내가 스스로 한하고 티끌과 재 가운데서 회개하나이다”(욥 42:6)라고 진심으로 회개했던 것입니다. 이 짤막하며 함축된 한마디의 말을 통해 욥은 하나님의 심판을 면할 뿐만 아니라 처음보다 배나 되는 축복을 받게 되었습니다.
결론:
“기회는 안방으로 들어와서 뒷문으로 나간다”라는 말이 있듯이, 우리는 하나님의 사랑과 축복을 실어오는 이 기회를 절대 놓치지 말고 붙잡아서 열매를 맺는 성도가 되어야겠습니다. 그렇다면 오늘 주시는 말씀을 통해서 나에게 허락하신 기회를 깨달아, 욥과 같이 심판을 면하고 복을 받을 뿐 아니라 주님께도 큰 영광을 돌려 드리는 역사가 있기를 바랍니다.
