The Work of God and the Work of Man
To His created mankind, God granted the rights and the responsibility to work. Hence, we must be strengthened by His grace and work diligently. Because Father God is still working for us to this date, and Jesus came to this earth to work and has completed all his duties for us, we must uphold the Will of He who sent us and diligently work with all our strength. However, we may be working but we do so incorrectly. The case of Peter who appears in today’s Scripture text is an example. Even though he performed the rightful duty as a disciple, he was reproached by Jesus. Let us differentiate the work of God and the work of a man so that we can think together which life of faith will give glory to God.
I. The root cause why Peter was reproached
From today’s Scripture text, we see Peter truly pouring his hearts out to Jesus. He gave sincere and loyal confession by saying, “Never, Lord. This shall never happen while I live.” However, Jesus did not consider Peter’s heart but even referred to him as Satan. From a man’s perspective, how saddening and disappointing is this? However, Jesus is teaching him that there is deep lesson contained in his statement that Peter cannot even imagine. The man cannot do God’s work or uphold His Will with man’s so-called sincerity or genuineness alone. This is nothing but the idea that stemmed from humanistic principle. This was the teachings of Jesus that it is nothing but the issues of flesh and the element of earthly issues which cannot be associated with the Will of God. How frightening and fearful is this Word? Aren’t there so many instances in reality that we cannot even confess like Peter? However, Jesus is including the confession of Peter as non-admissible. Jesus is clearly showing us that a man’s true heart or sincerity is nothing to do with one’s faith. Because such weakness of a man and sentimental side of a man can become most clever chance for Satan and most deadly weapon for him to destroy saints at the same time, Jesus is strongly rebuking Peter. Thus, the Lord is rebuking Peter who was used by Satan as a pathway and at the same time the darkness that is about to enter using his humanly sincerity as an excuse. To believe in Jesus means to discard man’s trueness and sincerity. It is faith when one stops what is on the earth but connects with heaven (Gal 2:20). The faith is the principle of divinity. We must entrust first to the Will of God and obey to sacrifice ourselves. We must remember that the Word came down from heaven but did not spring from the earth (Ps 85:11).
II. The work of God means to consider God’s circumstance first
Depending on where you place the root of your thoughts, the principle of divinity and humanistic principle will divide. Jesus clearly taught this fact through the issues of taxation in Mt 22:15-22. To the Jews who asked Jesus about whom they need to pay their taxes to, Jesus first inspected whether they had faith or not by asking them where they placed their roots of thoughts. Those with the principle of divinity are those who will consider the circumstances of God first. Peter did not have faith to consider the circumstances of God first. If Peter considered the circumstances of God who even sacrificed His One and Only Son on the cross to love and to save the mankind and armed himself with the fullness of God’s Spirit, he would have never stood in the place where he was rebuked. I would like you to remember that when he was not considering the circumstances of God deeply, he was destined to be reproached as a person who “thinks of the work of a man” (1Cor 2:10-12).
Conclusion:
My beloved saints! It is very important to know what one’s priority is. It is because the work of God and the work of a man will divide from this. Jesus had understanding for the existence of God and would always glorify God by obeying the Word of God first (Jn 8:29). What is the most important work of God that we must obey today? We can say it is to faithfully do God’s work with all our strength by following His teachings and not disappointing God who is teaching us first to do God’s work on earth, giving us the hopeful world of heaven, and instilling us with the saddened heart of Father God like how He did to Jesus. I sincerely plead with all of you to perform and handle the duties of faithful witness with all your strength.
하나님의 일과 사람의 일
하나님께서는 창조하신 인간에게 일할 수 있는 권리와 의무를 부여하셨습니다. 따라서 우리는 주시는 은혜를 힘입어 열심히 일을 해야만 합니다. 하나님 아버지도 지금까지 우리를 위해 일하시고 계시며, 예수님도 일하시기 위해 이 땅에 오셔서 우리를 위해 모든 일을 마쳐 주셨기에, 우리도 보내신 이의 뜻을 받들어 힘을 다해 일을 해야 하는 것입니다. 그런데 일은 하되, 잘못 하는 일이 있습니다. 본문의 베드로의 경우가 그러합니다. 그는 제자로서 마땅히 할 일을 했음에도 불구하고 예수님의 책망을 받았던 것입니다. 하나님의 일과 사람의 일을 잘 구분해서, 하나님께 영광을 돌리는 신앙의 삶인지 함께 생각해 보기로 합니다.
1. 베드로가 책망 받게 된 근본 원인
오늘 본문에서 베드로는 진심으로 예수님께 자신의 심정을 간하고 있음을 봅니다. ‘주께서 십자가에 달려 돌아가시다니요? 그런 일은 결단코 내가 살아 있는 한 있을 수 없을 것입니다’라면서 그는 충정 어린 고백을 하였던 것입니다. 그런데 주님은 이런 베드로의 마음을 헤아려 주시지 않고, ‘사단’이라고까지 몰아붙이고 계신 것입니다. 인간의 입장에서 볼 때, 얼마나 서운하고 섭섭하기 짝이 없는 말씀입니까? 그러나 여기에는 베드로가 알지 못하는 깊은 교훈이 깃들어 있음을 예수님은 가르쳐 주고 계십니다. 인간의 소위 ‘진심’이나 ‘진정’이라는 것으로는 하나님의 일을 받들고 행할 수 없다는 것이 바로 그것입니다. 이것은 어디까지나 인본주의적인 발상에 불과합니다. 그것은 어디까지나 혈육의 문제, 땅의 요소이지, 하나님의 뜻과 결부시킬 성질의 것이 결코 될 수 없다는 것이 예수님의 교훈이었던 것입니다. 얼마나 두렵고 떨리는 말씀입니까?
베드로와 같은 고백조차 하지 못하는 자들이 얼마나 많은 현실입니까? 그런데도 예수님은 더하여 베드로의 고백까지도 불합격이라는 판정을 내리고 계신 것입니다. 사람의 진심이나 진정은 신앙과는 아무런 상관이 없음을 분명하게 보여 주시는 말씀인 것입니다. 이런 인간의 연약하고 감정적인 부분은 사단이 노리는 가장 교묘한 틈이며, 동시에 성도를 무너뜨릴 수 있는 가장 강력한 무기가 될 수 있기에, 주님은 베드로를 혹독하게 책망하신 것입니다.
따라서 예수님은, 사단과 짝하여 그 통로로 이용당하고 있는 베드로와, 그의 인간적인 진심을 빌미 삼아 틈타려는 배후의 어둠까지 함께 책망하셨던 것입니다.
예수님을 믿는다는 것은 인간의 진심과 진정을 버리는 일입니다. 땅의 것을 끊고 하늘의 줄에 접붙임을 받는 것이 신앙입니다(갈 2:20). 신앙은 신본주의입니다. 하나님의 뜻에 먼저 맡기고 순종해서 자신을 헌신해야 합니다. 말씀은 위로부터 내려온 것이지, 땅에서 솟은 것이 아님을 명심해야 합니다(시 85:11).
2. 하나님의 일은 먼저 하나님의 사정을 헤아리는 것을 뜻합니다
생각의 뿌리를 어디에 두고 있느냐에 따라 신본주의와 인본주의는 구별됩니다. 예수님은 마 22:15-22에서, 세금 문제를 통해 이 사실을 분명하게 가르쳐 주셨습니다. 누구에게 세금을 바치는 것이 옳은가를 묻는 유대인들에게, 예수님은 생각의 뿌리가 어디에 두고 있는가를 물으심으로써 먼저의 신앙을 가지고 있는지 아닌지를 점검하셨던 것입니다. 신본주의자들은 하나님의 사정을 먼저 헤아릴 줄 아는 자들입니다.
베드로에게는 하나님의 사정을 먼저 헤아릴 수 있는 믿음이 없었습니다. 독생자 예수님을 십자가에 내놓으시면서까지 인간을 사랑하시고 구원하실 수밖에 없으신 하나님의 사정을 헤아리고 하나님의 영의 충만하심으로 무장했다면, 베드로는 결코 주님의 책망을 받는 자리에 서지는 않았을 것입니다. 하나님의 깊은 사정을 헤아리지 못할 때에, “사람의 일을 생각하는 자”라는 책망을 받을 수밖에 없다는 사실을 기억하시기를 바랍니다(고전 2:10-12).
결론:
사랑하는 성도 여러분, 무엇이 먼저냐를 아는 것은 대단히 중요한 문제입니다. 이로 인해 하나님의 일과 사람의 일이 판가름 나기 때문입니다. 예수님은 하나님의 존재에 대한 이해를 가지시고 하나님의 일을 언제나 먼저 준행하심으로 하나님께 영광을 돌리셨습니다(요 8:29).
오늘 우리가 행해야 할 가장 중요한 하나님의 일이 무엇입니까? 우리에게 예수님에게처럼 하나님 아버지의 안타까운 심정을 심어 주시며, 하늘의 세계를 소망 중에 안겨 주시면서, 땅에서 하나님의 일을 먼저 행하는 자로서의 삶을 살 수 있도록 가르쳐 주시는 하나님을 실망시키지 아니하고, 그의 가르치심을 따라 힘을 다해 충성하는 일이라고 말할 수 있습니다. 끝까지 충성된 증인의 사명을 힘을 다해 감당하는 모두가 되시기를 부탁드립니다.
