When You Are Near God
James 4:6-8
God defines a true faith or perfect faith as a faith that is so tight and gapless that not even a sharp needlepoint can pierce through. Such faith has a power of creation that can command a mulberry tree to be uprooted and be planted in the sea if we have a faith as small as a mustard seed. The faith of Enoch who walked with God for 300 years and enjoyed the blessing of eternal life and happiness without seeing death is indeed a true faith that is gapless. Like the faith of Joshua and Caleb who never grumbled against God or against the man of God, accepted only God as “their help, their fortress, their inheritance, their salvation, their refuge and their Lord,” and entered the Land of Promise at the end. I sincerely hope that we all will receive the blessing of thousands upon thousands while we always go near God with such faith.
I. What is the life of being close to God?
We can see in Acts 17:11, “Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.” We can say that the life of faith of the Berean Jews is truly a life trying of being close to God. The life that they gathered together every day, examined the scriptures and prayed! This indeed is the life of being close to God, to love Him and to respect Him. It is stated in today’s scripture text, Jam 4:7, “Submit yourselves to God.” We combine these 3 actions-living according to the Word of God, obeying His Word, and bearing the fruits according to the Word of God-and call it “submission.” A desire come to church, a heart to read the Bible to confirm what they have heard was true! This is a heart of being close to God. When we have such heart, God will bless us. The Psalmist said, “How good it is to be near God!” This blessing is the blessing of thousands upon thousands, and this is the blessing that the tens of thousands of generations will receive and enjoy and have more than enough to share with others. Furthermore, a life of being close to God is to be “kind to the poor” for the Will of God as it is stated in Prov 19:17. Loving the church, loving the Word, praying for the enemies, all of these are life of being close to God.
II. What is the blessing that you will receive when you go near God?
What kind of blessing will we receive when we go near God every day and bear the fruits of joy that He so desires?
1) God will hold on to us with His power. It is stated in Ps 73:23, “Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand.” When the powerful Hand of God, the Hand of Authority holds on to our hand, we will receive the blessing of prosperity and success. No matter what we do, when we are bound by the powerful Hand of God and work, there will surely be the work of accomplishment. When the Hand of Creation, the Hand that creates something from nothing grabs on to us, do we think there is a failure in the works we do? It is stated in Ps 63:8, “I cling to you; your right hand upholds me.” What this means is that when we love God every day and go near Him, God will hold on to us with the powerful right hand of righteousness. In the word “upholding” contains the meaning of “I will be responsible for you or I will take care of you.” That is why the Psalmist testified “Because of my integrity you uphold me and set me in your presence forever” (Ps 41:12). Prophet Isaiah also said, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isa 41:10).
2) God will guide us with His Word. The Word of God is a lamp for our feet, a light on our path, so when we go near God, He will light up our path with His Word (Prov 6:23, Ps 119:105). The path that God leads us is the righteous path (Ps 3:3), eternal path, path of truth, and the path of life (Jn 14:6), and the path of success and prosperity (Gen 28:15).
3) God will lead us until we enter the Kingdom of God. Like Enoch and Elijah of the Old Testament who were transfigured and went up to heaven without seeing death, God will lead those of us who come near Him, and He will lead us until we enter the Kingdom of God. When we enter the Kingdom of God, we do not go up there with the perishable flesh but with the glorious form which was transfigured in a flash with the final grace that has been in store for us (1 Cor 15:51-54, Php 3:21, 1 Thes 4:16-17).
4) God will give us abundant blessing that lacks nothing. Like it is written in Ps 34:9, “Fear the Lord, you His holy people, for those who fear Him lack nothing,” God will pour upon the blessing of abundance that lacks nothing to those who go near Him, This is because God indeed is out blessing (Ps 16:2).
Conclusion:
As you can see, those who are close to God will receive all blessings that are promised in the Bible. As a result, they will fear and honor God more and more (Ps 67:7), and not only all sickness will be healed but will receive a blessing of daily renewal and will live a blessed life to praise God with joy all day long (Ps 103:3, 35:28). Through today’s message, I sincerely hope that all of you will receive such blessings by walking with God and being nearer to Him.
하나님을 가까이하면
약 4:6-8
하나님께서는 주사 바늘처럼 뾰족한 것도 놓이려야 놓일 수 없는 빈틈없는 믿음을 참믿음, 완전한 믿음이라고 말씀하고 계십니다. 이러한 믿음은 겨자씨만큼만 있어도 뽕나무를 명해서 바다에 옮겨 심을 수 있는 창조의 능력이 있습니다. 3백 년간 하나님과 동행하는 가운데 죽지 않고 영생복락의 축복을 누렸던 에녹과 같은 믿음이 바로 틈이 없는 참믿음입니다. 여호수아와 갈렙처럼 하나님과 하나님의 사람을 절대로 원망하지 않고, 하나님만을 ‘나의 도움이요 나의 산성이요, 나의 산업이요 나의 구원과 피난처, 주인으로 삼는’ 가운데 끝까지 약속의 땅에 들어간 믿음입니다.
이러한 믿음으로 늘 하나님과 가까이하는 가운데 천천만만의 축복을 받는 역사가 있기를 바라겠습니다.
1. 하나님을 가까이하는 삶은?
사도행전 17:11에서, “베뢰아 사람들은 데살로니가 교회 사람보다 신사적이어서 간절한 마음으로 말씀을 받고 이것이 그러한가 하여 날마다 성경을 상고하므로”라는 내용을 찾아볼 수 있습니다. 여기에 나타난 베뢰아 사람들의 신앙생활은 참으로 하나님을 가까이하는 삶이라고 할 수 있습니다. 날마다 함께 모여서 성경을 상고하고, 기도하는 삶! 이것이 하나님을 가까이하고, 하나님을 사랑하고, 하나님을 위하는 길입니다.
오늘 본문 약 4:7에서도 “그런즉 너희는 하나님께 순복할지어다”라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 하나님의 말씀대로 살고, 하나님의 말씀대로 지키고, 하나님의 말씀대로 열매를 맺는 삶, 이 세 가지를 종합해서 ‘순복’이라고 합니다. 교회에 나오고자 하는 마음, 이것이 그러한가 하여 성경을 상고하는 마음이 바로 하나님을 가까이하는 마음입니다. 이러한 마음을 가질 때 하나님께서는 복을 주십니다. 시편 기자도 “하나님을 가까이하는 것이 네게 복이라”라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 그 복은 천천만만의 복으로, 자손만대가 다 받아 가지고 누리고 쓰다 못해 남에게까지 나누어 주는 복입니다.
또한 하나님을 가까이하는 삶은 잠 19:17 말씀처럼 하나님의 뜻을 위해서 가난한 자들을 도와주는 것입니다. 교회를 사모하고, 말씀을 사모하고, 원수 같은 사람을 위해서 기도해 주는 것도 바로 하나님을 가까이하는 삶입니다.
2. 하나님을 가까이할 때 임하는 축복은?
날마다 하나님을 가까이하며 원하시는 기쁨의 열매를 맺을 때 어떠한 축복을 받게 됩니까?
1) 능력으로 붙들어 주십니다.
시 73:23을 볼 때, “내가 항상 주와 함께하니 주께서 내 오른손을 붙드셨나이다”라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 하나님의 능력의 손, 권세 있는 손이 우리의 손을 붙잡아 주실 때 만사형통의 복을 받게 됩니다. 어떠한 일을 하든지 하나님의 능력의 손에 붙잡힌 바 되어서 일할 때 반드시 성취의 역사가 있습니다. 창조의 손, 없는 것도 있게 하시는 손이 우리를 붙잡아 주실 때에 사업이 안 될 수가 있겠습니까?
시 63:8에도 “나의 영혼이 주를 가까이 따르니 주의 오른손이 나를 붙드시거니와”라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 즉 내가 날마다 하나님을 사모하고 가까이할 때 하나님께서는 권세 있고 능력 있는 오른손으로 우리를 붙들어 주십니다. ‘붙들어 준다’라는 말씀 속에는 ‘내가 책임지겠다’라는 뜻이 깃들어 있습니다. 그래서 시편 기자는 “주께서 나를 나의 완전한 중에 붙드시고 영영히 주의 앞에 세우시나이다”(시 41:12)라고 고백했던 것입니다.
이사야 선지자도 “두려워 말라 내가 너와 함께함이니라 놀라지 말라 나는 네 하나님이 됨이니라 내가 너를 굳세게 하리라 참으로 너를 도와주리라 참으로 나의 오른손으로 너를 붙들리라”(사 41:10)라고 말씀하고 있습니다.
2) 말씀으로 인도해 주십니다.
하나님의 말씀은 우리의 앞길에 등불과 같기 때문에, 하나님을 가까이하면 그 말씀으로 우리의 앞길을 환하게 밝혀 주시고 인도해 주십니다(잠 6:23, 시 119:105). 하나님께서 인도하시는 길은 의의 길이며(시 3:3), 영원한 길, 진리의 길, 생명의 길이며(요 14:6), 형통한 길로 인도해 주십니다(창 28:15).
3) 천국에 갈 때까지 인도해 주십니다.
구약 때 에녹과 엘리야가 죽지 않고 변화하여 하늘로 올라간 것같이, 하나님께서는 당신을 가까이하는 사람들을 인도해 주시되 천국에 갈 때까지 인도해 주시는 분이십니다. 천국에 가되 지금과 같은 썩어질 육신을 가지고 올라가는 것이 아니라, 쌓아 두었던 마지막 은혜가 우리를 사로잡아 순간적으로 영광의 몸으로 변화시켜 주십니다(고전 15:51-54, 빌 3:21, 살전 4:16-17).
4) 부족함이 없는 넘치는 복을 주십니다.
“너희 성도들아 여호와를 경외하라 저를 경외하는 자에게는 부족함이 없도다”라고 하신 시편 34:9 말씀처럼, 하나님을 가까이하는 자는 부족함이 없이 넘치는 복을 받습니다. 이것은 바로 하나님만이 우리의 복이기 때문입니다(시 16:2).
결론:
하나님을 가까이하는 자에게는 이처럼 성경에 약속된 모든 축복이 임하게 되는 것입니다. 그 결과로 그들은 이제 더욱더 하나님을 경외하게 되며(시 67:7), 모든 질병이 치료함을 받을 뿐 아니라, 날마다 새로워지는 축복을 받아 기쁨으로 종일토록 주를 찬송하는 복된 삶을 살게 됩니다(시 103:3, 35:28). 오늘 이 말씀을 통해, 범사에 하나님과 동행하고 더욱 가까이함으로 이러한 축복을 받아 누리는 성도님들이 되시기를 바랍니다.
