Let us be the special disciples (2)
Unlike the other 11 disciples, John was recognized by Jesus as a ‘beloved disciple, a special disciple.’ If so, let us examine together the traits of a ‘special disciple’ who was recognized by the Lord and whose faith was accepted by the Lord.
I. He was a disciple who understood the heart of Jesus (Jn 13:23).
John, the disciple who was loved by Jesus, reclined next to Jesus. Here, reclining next to Jesus denotes that he is the “one who can understand Jesus’ heart and know His thoughts, and he is closest to Him without distance.” As a result, John, a special disciple who was loved by the Lord, became the disciple who possessed the insight to pierce through the facts that others did not know of. The first proof is that John was the only one of the 12 disciples to realize that Judas Iscariot was the thief who stole from the money bag (Jn 12:6). No other disciples knew this at that time. Because only John saw through this beforehand, he precisely recorded in the Gospel of John, “because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it” (Jn 12:6). Second, he was the disciple that asked Jesus which disciple would betray Him and received an answer (Jn 13:21-26). When Jesus’ heart was troubled and said, ‘one of you is going to betray me,’ no one dared to ask Him, ‘Who is he?’ We can see that Peter, who self-claimed to be the chief disciple of Jesus, could not ask but motioned John to ask instead (Jn 13:24). Is this not the proof that John is most loved and accepted by the Lord? As such, when John who knew of the secret as he reclined next to Jesus asked Him, Jesus kindly answered him, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish” (Jn 13:26) even though His heart was troubled. Why, then, did John reclined next to Jesus? John reclined next to Jesus because (1) Jesus’ bosom is an eternal refuge, (2) it is overflowing with true peace, (3) he wanted to rely on Jesus, (4) he wanted to receive and understand the secret of Jesus, (5) he wanted to burn with the passionate love that existed in Jesus’s heart, (6) there is spiritual milk and honey are flowing in Jesus’ heart, (7) there is no hunger in Jesus’ heart but always abundant, (8) the fountain of life flows endlessly when he is in Jesus’ arms, and (9) the truth is abundant in Jesus’ heart (Col 2:3). From this, we can see that Jesus was comforted by John and shared all of His secrets with him.
II. John had the faith to recognize first (Jn 21:7).
When we look at the Bible, the Word dash forth for a purpose. Like how a gunner shoots at a target, God wants to send forth the Word to a man in His image and have him dash forth with it for His purpose. Peter, the chief disciple who confessed his faith before the Lord and received the keys of the kingdom of heaven, was also a disciple who outwardly followed the Word. However, not only he lagged behind in the way of the Word by denying and cursing the Lord at the last moment, but instantaneously pushed from the position of the chief disciple to the very back. On the contrary, who was the first to recognize the resurrected Lord when He appeared at the Sea of Tiberias? When we look at Jn 21:7, was it not true that John, the ‘beloved disciple of Jesus,’ recognized Him first and shouted, ‘It is the Lord!’? It is stated that the other disciples did not believe even after they heard John but only recognized Him after they had eaten the bread and fish that Jesus had given them, and none of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” (Jn 21:12). As such, a special disciple has the faith to recognize first while dashing with the Word.
III. John received the blessing to be remained (Jn 21:22).
We see from Jn 21:15-23 that Jesus commanded Peter these two things, “Do you love me? Follow me!” This includes the fact that Peter failed to love the Lord and follow Him. At the same time, the phrase ‘follow me’ denotes, “My beloved disciple is already following me, so follow me.” Peter is told by the Lord about death, but he sees John receiving the blessing to be remained until the Lord returns. From this, we can determine which disciple was recognized and loved by the Lord. If so, what is the mark of the blessing to remain with the Lord? It is obvious to be in the Father’s heart, like Jacob dressed his beloved son Joseph in a colorful garment. It is also like how Joseph gave his own brother Benjamin food that was 5 times as much as anyone else’s, 5 sets of clothes, and 300 shekels of silver to stay with him (Gen 43:33-34; 45:22-24).
Conclusion
Jesus had 12 disciples, but only John was the ‘other’ disciple who was loved by the Lord as a ‘special’ disciple. John’s faith enabled him to receive the blessing to always recline next to the Lord, to recognize the resurrected Jesus first, and to remain with Him until He returns, so that on the island of Patmos he was able to receive all the Word of revelation that is to come that was in the heart of God. Hence, we should also follow the faith of the Apostle John and become special disciples.
특별한 제자가 되자 (2)
요한은 예수님께 다른 열한 제자와는 달리 ‘사랑받는 제자, 특별한 제자’로 인정을 받았습니다. 그렇다면 주님께 인정을 받고 그 신앙이 합격을 받은 ‘특별한 제자’는 어떠한 제자였는지 함께 살펴보겠습니다.
1. 예수의 마음을 헤아리는 제자였습니다(요 13:23).
예수님께 사랑을 받은 제자 요한은 예수님의 품에 의지하여 누워있었습니다. 여기서 예수님의 가슴에 의지하고 있다는 것은 “예수님의 마음을 헤아리고 생각을 알 수 있는 자로서 거리가 없이 가장 가까운 자”라는 뜻입니다. 그 결과로, 주님께 사랑을 받는 특별한 제자 요한은 남들이 알지 못하는 사실을 꿰뚫는 통찰력을 소유한 제자가 됐습니다.
그 첫 번째 증거로, 열두 제자 중 유일하게 가룟 유다가 헌금을 훔치는 도둑임을 깨달은 제자가 바로 요한입니다(요 12:6). 당시에 이 사실을 아는 제자는 아무도 없었습니다. 오직 요한만이 이를 미리 꿰뚫어 보았기에 요한복음에 “저는 도적이라 돈 궤를 맡고 거기 넣는 것을 훔쳐 감이러라”(요 12:6)라고 정확하게 기록한 것입니다.
두 번째로는, 예수를 팔 자가 누구인지 예수님께 여쭤보고 답변을 들은 제자였다는 점입니다(요 13:21-26). 예수님께서 마음이 민망하여 ‘너희 중 나를 팔 자가 있다’ 하셨을 때, 누구도 감히 예수님께 ‘그가 누굽니까?’ 묻지 못했습니다. 예수님의 수제자를 자처하던 베드로도 묻지 못하고, 머릿짓을 하여 요한에게 대신 여쭤보도록 신호를 보내고 있음을 알 수 있습니다(요 13:24). 이것은 요한이 주님으로부터 가장 많은 사랑을 받고, 인정을 받고 있다는 증거가 아니겠습니까?
이처럼 예수의 품에 의지하여 그 비밀을 알았던 요한이 질문하자, 예수님은 마음이 민망하셨음에도 불구하고 “내가 한 조각을 찍어다가 주는 자가 그니라”(요 13:26)라고 친절히 답해 주셨던 것입니다.
그러면 요한은 왜 주님의 가슴에 의지했을까요?
요한은 ①예수님의 품속은 영원한 피난처가 되기 때문에, ②참평안이 넘치기 때문에, ③예수님을 의지하기 위해서, ④예수님의 비밀을 받고 깨닫기 위해서, ⑤주님의 가슴속에는 사랑이 불타기 때문에 그 사랑에 함께 불타기 위해서, ⑥예수님의 가슴속에는 신령한 젖과 꿀이 흐르기 때문에, ⑦예수님의 가슴속은 굶주림이 없고 늘 풍성하기 때문에, ⑧예수님의 품에 파묻혀 있으면 생명 샘이 한없이 흐르기 때문에, ⑨예수님의 가슴속에는 진리가 풍성하기 때문에(골 2:3) 주님의 가슴에 의지했던 것입니다.
이를 볼 때, 예수님은 요한을 통해 위로를 받으시고, 요한에게 모든 비밀을 대주셨음을 알 수 있습니다.
2. 먼저 알아보는 신앙을 가졌습니다(요 21:7).
성경을 볼 때, 말씀은 목적을 위해 달음박질합니다. 마치 포수가 목표물을 향해 총을 쏘듯이, 하나님께서도 당신의 목적을 위해 당신의 형상을 입은 사람만 있다면 말씀을 내보내셔서 그 말씀과 함께 달려가기를 원합니다.
주님께 신앙고백을 하고 천국 열쇠를 받은 수제자 베드로도, 겉으로 볼 때는 말씀을 따랐던 제자입니다. 그러나 마지막 순간에 주님을 부인하고 저주함으로 말씀의 길에서 뒤처졌을 뿐 아니라, 순간으로 수제자의 자리에서 맨 뒷자리로 밀려나고 말았던 것입니다.
반면에, 부활하신 주님께서 디베랴 바닷가에 나타나셨을 때 누가 가장 먼저 주님을 알아봤습니까? 요 21:7 말씀 볼 때, ‘예수의 사랑하시는 그 제자’ 요한이 먼저 알아보고 ‘주시다’ 하고 외쳤던 것이 아닙니까? 다른 제자들은 이러한 요한의 말을 듣고도 믿지 못하다가, 예수님께서 주신 떡과 생선을 먹은 다음에야 알아봤지만, 너무 죄송해서 ‘주님이십니까?’ 묻지도 못했다고 말씀하고 있습니다(요 21:12).
이처럼, 특별한 제자는 말씀과 함께 달음박질하는 가운데 남보다 먼저 알아보는 신앙을 가진 자입니다.
3. 머물게 하는 축복을 받은 자였습니다(요 21:22).
요 21:15-23 말씀을 볼 때, 예수님께서는 베드로를 향해서는 “나를 사랑하느냐? 나를 따르라!” 두 가지를 명령하셨습니다. 이 말씀 속에는 베드로가 주님을 사랑하지 못했고, 따르지 못했다는 사실이 포함돼 있습니다. 동시에 ‘나를 따르라’는 말씀에는 “사랑하는 제자는 이미 나를 따르고 있으니 너나 잘 따르라”라는 의미가 담겨 있는 것입니다.
베드로는 주님으로부터 죽음에 관해 말씀을 들었지만, 요한은 주님이 다시 오실 때까지 함께 머물게 되는 축복을 받는 광경을 보게 됩니다. 이를 볼 때, 누가 주님께 인정받고 사랑받는 제자인가 판가름이 나게 되는 것입니다.
그러면 주님 곁에 머물게 되는 축복을 받은 표는 무엇일까요? 그것은 야곱이 자기의 사랑하는 아들 요셉에게 채색옷을 입힌 것같이, 아버지의 중심에 있는 것이 표시가 납니다. 또한, 요셉이 자기의 친동생 베냐민에게만 5배나 되는 음식과 옷 다섯 벌과 은 300냥을 주며, 자기 곁에 머물게 하는 것과 같습니다(창 43:33-34, 45:22-24).
결론
예수님에게 열두 제자가 있었지만, 요한만은 ‘특별한’ 제자로서 주님의 사랑을 받는 ‘다른’ 제자였습니다. 그러한 요한의 신앙은 늘 주님의 품에 의지하고, 부활하신 주님을 먼저 알아보고, 주님 다시 오실 때까지 주님 곁에 머물게 하는 축복을 받으므로, 밧모섬에서 하나님의 가슴속에 있는 장차 이루어질 모든 계시의 말씀을 다 받게 되었던 것입니다. 그러므로 우리도 사도 요한의 신앙을 본받아, 특별한 제자가 다 되어야 하겠습니다.
