The Son of Man has no place to lay his head
Today’s Scripture text records Jacob’s encounter with God at Bethel while he was fleeing from his brother Esau. What we need to focus on especially is the confession of Jacob which said, “This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven” when he woke up from sleeping after using one of the stones as a pillow. Here, Jacob not only met God who walked with him but was also blessed to find the temple of God through the stone he laid his head on to sleep. If so, let us examine the spiritual meaning and connection between the stone that Jacob laid his head to sleep on and the Word of Jesus, ‘The Son of Man has no place to lay his head.’
I. Jesus had no place to lay His head.
Today’s Scripture text Mt 8:20 and Lk 9:58 testify that all beasts such as foxes and birds in the air have a place to stay, but the Lord who is God the Creator and the Savior of our lives has ‘no place to lay his head.’ If so, what does ‘head’ mean here? A head is the organ that processes reasoning as well as the organ that gives commands to the whole body. That is why the head becomes the main subject that gives glory to God. Moreover, when we ‘think’ with our heads, there are two kinds of ‘thoughts’ which are the thought of the flesh and of the spirit; and we must think only about God. That is why it is stated in Rom 8:6, “The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.” Furthermore, the thought of the flesh becomes the enemy of God. It is because neither they surrender to the laws of God nor they are able to understand His will so they are unable to obey Him. Thus, those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God (Rom 8:8). If so, the background of Jesus’ lamentation, ‘The Son of Man has no place to lay his head,’ contains the meaning that no Israelites at the time of Jesus had the mind of the Spirit to understand and believe in Him. That is why it is written in the Bible, 1) Jesus’ relatives did not believe in him but thought he was out of his mind (Mk 3:21), and 2) Jesus’ own brothers did not believe in him (Jn 7:3-5). As a result, Jesus had to go to Jerusalem not publicly but in secret, after his brothers had left for Passpver (Jn 7:10). 3) Many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. From Scripture texts such as Jn 6:60-61, 66, 71, we see that not only did the disciples not believe in Jesus, but they turned back and no longer followed him (Jn 6:66), and one of the twelve, Judas Iscariot, even sold his teacher (Jn 6:71).
II. Jesus is the head of the church.
The body and feet must live on the ground, but the head is not stuck to the ground but is separated. Since the head is the heavenly organ and the organ that processes reasoning, there is a clear difference from the other body parts. That is why one’s head is laid on a pillow so that the head is separated from the ground. If so, what is the spiritual meaning of this? The Bible first says that Jesus is the head of the church. It is written in Col 1:18, “He is the head of the body, the church.” Then, the house where Jesus, the head will dwell is the church, and the believers are the spiritual church where Jesus will dwell. The Apostle Paul said, “Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?” (1Cor 3:16). It is also testified in 1Cor 6:19, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?” In this sense, the relationship between the saints and Jesus is the church and its head. Just as the place where Jacob laid his head on became the house of God = Bethel, we can become a spiritual pillow or a true temple when Jesus dwells in each of us as a temple.
III. The spiritual meaning of a ‘place to lay his head.’
It is stated in Gen 28 that the stone in which Jacob laid his head on was the house of God, or the temple (Gen 28:16-18). Hence when Jesus said, “The Son of Man has no place to lay his head,” he refers to a ‘place to lay my head’ as the spiritual church, each believer. Moreover, since the head is an organ that processes reasoning and a heavenly organ rather than an earthly organ, it is an organ that always ponders, “How I should believe, and how I should understand.” In other words, it must be an organ that ponders about the spiritual thoughts. That is why Gal 6:8 differentiates believers who have a place for Jesus to lay his head on (or the spiritual pillow) and those without as those who ‘sow to please their flesh and those who sow to please the Spirit.’ To put this into perspective, acts of the flesh mentioned in Gal 5:19-21 are those without the spiritual pillow, and the fruit of the Spirit in v22-24 is the life of faith with the spiritual pillow. Likewise, Noah’s ark is Noah’s spiritual pillow which is the temple of God. Hence, those who are in the temple of God have no death or destruction. It is because it does not matter to those who are in the ark although water certainly is an instrument of God’s judgment and its ultimate end is death. Truly, Noah’s ark became the spiritual pillow of God which is floated on the water, a temple, an ark of salvation that transported believers.
Conclusion
When Jacob laid his head on the stone to sleep in the wilderness, he found the temple of God there. However, Jesus had no place to lay His head. In other words, Jesus did not find a house where he could lay in or the believers who became a true temple. If so, I sincerely hope that all of you will understand and realize through today’s message and confess, “Jesus, I will be your pillow from now on” so that Jesus can dwell in your hearts.
인자는 머리 둘 곳이 없다
오늘 본문은 야곱이 형 에서의 손을 피해 도망가던 중 벧엘에서 하나님을 만난 체험을 기록하고 있습니다. 특별히 주목할 것은 야곱이 돌을 베개 삼아 잔 후 깨어서 “이는 하나님의 전이요 하늘의 문이로다” 고백하는 장면입니다. 여기서 야곱은 자기와 동행해 주시는 하나님을 만났을 뿐 아니라, 베고 잔 돌을 통해 하나님의 성전을 발견하는 은총을 받았던 것입니다. 그렇다면 야곱이 베고 잤던 돌과 ‘인자는 머리 둘 곳이 없다’고 하신 예수님의 말씀은 어떤 영적인 의미와 연관성을 가지는지 함께 살펴보겠습니다.
1. 예수님은 머리 두실 곳이 없었습니다.
여우나 공중의 새와 같은 짐승도 다 거할 집이 있지만, 창조주 하나님이요, 우리의 생명의 구주이신 주님은 ‘머리 둘 곳이 없다’고 본문 마 8:20과 눅 9:58은 증거하고 있습니다. 그러면 여기서 ‘머리’란 무엇을 의미할까요?
머리란 생각하는 기관이요, 온몸에 명령을 내리는 명령 기관입니다. 그래서 머리는 하나님께 영광을 돌리는 주체가 됩니다. 또한, 머리로 ‘생각’을 할 때 ‘생각’에는 영의 생각과 육의 생각 두 가지가 있지만, 우리는 하나님만 생각해야 합니다. 그래서 롬 8:6에 “육신의 생각은 사망이요 영의 생각은 생명과 평안이니라”라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 나아가 육신의 생각은 하나님과 원수가 됩니다. 왜냐하면, 하나님의 법에 굴복하지 않을 뿐 아니라 하나님의 뜻을 깨닫지 못하므로, 결국 순종할 수도 없기 때문입니다. 그러므로 육신에 있는 자들은 하나님을 기쁘시게 할 수 없는 것입니다(롬 8:8).
그렇다면, 예수께서 ‘인자는 머리 둘 곳이 없다’고 한탄하신 배경 속에는 예수님 당시 이스라엘 중 누구도 영의 생각을 가지고 예수님을 깨닫고 믿는 사람이 없다는 뜻이 담겨 있습니다. 그래서 성경을 자세히 살펴보면, 1) 예수의 친족들도 그를 믿지 못하고 미쳤다고 생각하였으며(막 3:21), 2) 예수의 친형제들도 믿지 않았습니다(요 7:3- 5). 그 결과로 예수님은 유월절에 예루살렘에 올라가시되 사람들의 눈을 피해 몰래 가셔야만 했습니다(요 7:10). 3) 제자들 또한 예수님을 믿지 못했습니다. 요 6:60-61,66,71 등의 말씀을 볼 때, 오히려 제자들은 예수를 믿지 못했을 뿐 아니라 많은 제자가 예수의 곁을 물러갔으며(요 6:66), 열둘 중 하나인 가룟 유다는 스승을 팔기까지 했던 것입니다(요 6:71).
2. 예수님은 교회의 머리입니다.
몸과 발은 땅에 붙어 살아야 하지만, 머리는 땅에 붙지 않고 떨어져 있습니다. 머리는 하늘 기관이요 생각하는 기관이기 때문에 이처럼지체와는 분명한 차이점이 있습니다. 그래서 사람은 누웠을 때도 베개를 베고 잠으로써 머리는 땅에서 떨어져 있는 것입니다. 그러면 이것의 영적 의미는 무엇일까요?
성경은 먼저, 예수께서 교회의 머리가 되신다고 말씀하고 있습니다. 골 1:18 말씀을 볼 때, “그는 몸인 교회의 머리라”라고 기록돼 있습니다. 그러면 머리 되신 예수님이 거할 집은 바로 교회이며, 믿는 성도들이 예수께서 거하실 신령한 교회입니다. 사도 바울은 “너희가 하나님의 성전인 것과 하나님의 성령이 너희 안에 거하시는 것을 알지 못하느뇨”(고전 3:16)라고 말씀하였습니다. 고전 6:19에서는 “너희 몸은 너희가 하나님께로부터 받은바 너희 가운데 계신 성령의 전인 줄을 알지 못하느냐”라고 증거하였습니다. 이를 볼 때, 성도와 예수님과의 관계는 교회와 교회의 머리 됨과 같습니다. 이것은 마치 야곱이 돌을 베개하고 누웠던 장소가 하나님의 집=벧엘이 되었던 것처럼, 각자 우리를 성전 삼아 예수께서 거하실 때 우리는 신령한 베개, 참성전이 될 수 있는 것입니다.
3. ‘머리 둘 곳’의 영적 의미
창 28장에서 야곱이 머리를 의지하고 베었던 돌베개는 하나님의 집, 즉 성전이라고 말씀하고 있습니다(창 28:16-18). 그러므로 “인자는 머리 둘 곳이 없다” 할 때 ‘머리 둘 곳’이란 신령한 교회로서, 각자 믿는 성도를 말씀하고 있습니다.
또한, 머리는 생각하는 기관이요, 땅의 기관이 아니라 하늘 기관이므로, “내가 어떻게 믿어야 하며 어떻게 깨달아야 하느냐”를 생각하는 기관입니다. 즉 영의 생각을 하는 기관이 되어야 하는 것입니다. 그래서 갈 6:8은 예수님의 머리를 두실 만한 신령한 베개가 있는 신앙인과 없는 신앙인을 ‘육체를 위하여 심는 자와 성령을 위하여 심는 자’로 구분하여 설명하고 있습니다. 이를 세부적으로 볼 때, 갈 5:19-21에 나오는 육체의 일들은 베개가 없는 삶이요, 22-24절의 성령의 열매는 바로 베개가 있는 신앙의 내용을 말씀하고 있습니다.
마찬가지로, 노아의 방주는 노아의 베개로서, 하나님의 성전이 됩니다. 그러므로 하나님의 성전 안에 있는 사람들은 죽음이 없고 망함이 없습니다. 물은 분명 하나님의 심판의 도구요, 그 결국은 사망이지만, 방주 안에 있는 사람들에게는 상관이 없기 때문입니다. 참으로 노아의 방주는 물 위에 떠 있는 하나님의 신령한 베개가 되고, 성전이 되어, 믿는 사람들을 실어 나르는 구원의 방주가 되었던 것입니다.
결론
야곱은 광야 한가운데서 돌을 베고 잘 때 그곳에서 하나님의 전을 발견하였습니다. 하지만 예수님은 머리 두실 만한 곳이 없었습니다. 즉, 베개하고 누우실 만한 집, 곧 참성전 된 믿음의 성도들을 하나도 발견하지 못했던 것입니다. 그렇다면 이 말씀을 통해 깨닫고 “예수님, 이제부터 제가 당신의 베개가 되어 드리겠습니다”라고 고백하는 가운데, 예수께서 여러분의 마음 가운데 거하시기에 부족함이 없는 성도님들이 되시기 바랍니다.
