Do not wound your conscience
One of the important issues that was controversial in the churches during the time of the Early Church was about “food sacrificed to idols.” Because there were many instances where the food sacrificed to idols wound the brothers’ weak conscience as it is stated, “when you sin against them in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ” (1Cor 8:12), Apostle Paul talked about the nature of the church and true love for his neighbors from this issue. The main dispute in today’s Scripture text is about food, but Apostle Paul accurately detected that the essence of the problem is not about food itself but about the church.
I. The church is one family.
Explaining the dispute over food sacrificed to idols, Apostle Paul emphasizes the sense of church community, i.e., the church is one family bound by love and a community of love. In the churches during the time of Apostle Paul, there were saints who had many years of faith, and there were saints who just started their life of faith. However, there was an issue that separated these two groups and divided the church, and that was eating food sacrificed to idols. When it comes to eating this food sacrificed to idols, the saints with many years of faith thought that there should be no problem eating it as long as they eat with thanksgiving because it was also created by God (1Tim 4:4). However, because the new believers thought that a reverent church should not be defiled by food sacrificed to idols, there were conflicts among one another, and the new believers were distressed over it and stumbled by it, causing divisions among each other. To this, Apostle Paul made them realize that the essence of this issue was not about food sacrificed to idols but a matter of love. It is based on the fact that the church is a community of love made up of one God, one Jesus, one faith and the Holy Spirit. Apostle Paul thought that this was the true image of the church to not act and talk as you please but be considerate to others who may be vulnerable to get wounded by your speech or actions. Hence, the true image of the church is to shelter the saints with generosity and embrace them with love. True love can only be entered through the gate of service that serves one another. Without sincere love like the Lord who encouraged his disciples to have a humble attitude to respect others and wash each other’s feet and how humble He was to wash their feet first; it becomes a frightening sin. Love is simply about giving, and it sprouts only through our sacrifice. By reminding us the fact that God confirmed His love by sacrificing His Son to save us (Rom 5:8, 8:32), He reminded us of the need to consider for the weak.
II. The church is the body of Jesus.
Apostle Paul reminded the cross of Christ as he intervened in the dispute over the food sacrificed to idols in the Church of Corinth. He said, “Jesus died for the weak, but why are you trampling on the weak and hurting their conscience?” This bases on the fact that the church is the body of God. Through Jesus’ redemption on the cross, we the mankind have now become His body, and He has become our head. Just like every part suffers when one part is suffered, and every part rejoices if one part is honored, we are the body of Christ, and each and every one of us is His body part; so, we are the church that is interconnected and is one body. Hence, isn’t this the true image of a church that Apostle Paul assert, a church that console each other and grieve and rejoice with each other (1Cor 12:12-17)? That is why Apostle Paul declares that he will not eat meat for the rest of his life if eating food sacrificed to idols becomes a stumbling block for the new believers (Rom 14:13-15). Then he warned, “If your brother or sister is distressed because of what you eat, you are no longer acting in love. Do not by your eating destroy someone for whom Christ died” (Rom 14:15).
III. The church is a community that carries one yoke.
Like an ox carries a yoke, a church is a community that carries a burden together. We do not have a separate burden. Like it is stated in Gal 6:2, “carry each other’s burdens, and in this way your will fulfill the law of Christ,” church is a community that carries the burden of Christ on the cross and strides forth. Jesus said in Mt 11:28-30, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened.” When we come to Jesus, he will take off our burden and instead will give us a yoke of the Lord that is lighter and easier to bear. Hence, the church is a community of love that carries the yoke of the Lord together. A good church is a church without discrimination and carries together the yoke of Jesus with joy. When the congregation realizes this, they will be able to live in “peace and be holy” with everyone (Heb 12:14). Moreover, they will have a heart to serve one another and to love their neighbors like their own body (Gal 5:13). Like the words of encouragement of Apostle Paul who said, “You were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love,” a church that serves one another in love–this is an image of the church that carries the same yoke.
Conclusion
Through the issue of food sacrificed to idols, Apostle Paul testifies about the true nature of the church. A church is a community of family bound by love, a community of love connected by one body, and a community of ministry that carries the same yoke. When we realize this, there will not be an instance where we disdain one another or cause each other to stumble to wound their conscience.
양심을 상하게 하지 말라
초대교회 당시 교회에서 논란이 되었던 중요한 문제 중 하나가 ‘우상 제물’에 관한 것이었습니다. “너희가 형제에게 죄를 지어 그 약한 양심을 상하게 하는 것이 곧 그리스도에게 죄를 짓는 것이니라”(고전 8:12)–이 구절과 같이, 당시에는 우상 제물로 인해 형제들의 약한 양심을 상하는 일이 많이 있었기에, 사도 바울은 이 문제로부터 시작하여 교회의 본질과 참된 이웃 사랑에 대해 말씀하고 있습니다. 본문의 주된 논쟁은 음식에 관한 것이지만, 그러나 문제의 본질은 음식 자체에 있는 것이 아니라 교회에 관한 문제라는 것을 사도 바울은 정확하게 간파했던 것입니다.
1. 교회는 한 가족입니다.
우상 제물에 관한 논쟁에 대해 설명하면서 사도 바울은 교회의 공동체성, 즉 교회가 사랑으로 묶인 하나의 가족이며 사랑의 공동체라는 것을 강조하고 있습니다. 사도 바울 당시에 교회에는 믿음이 오래된 성도가 있는가 하면, 이제 막 신앙생활을 시작한 연약한 자도 있었습니다. 그런데 이 둘을 갈라 놓고 교회를 분열되게 하는 문제가 있었으니 바로 우상 제물을 먹는 것이었습니다. 이 우상 제물을 먹는 문제에 있어서 오래된 신자들은 우상 제물의 고기도 하나님이 창조한 것이기 때문에 감사함으로 먹으면 문제가 없다고 생각했습니다(딤전 4:4). 그러나 초신자들은 경건해야 할 교회가 우상에게 바쳐진 제물로 더럽혀지는 일이 있어서는 안 된다고 생각했기에, 시험에 들기도 하고, 서로 분열과 갈등이 있었습니다. 이에 대해 사도 바울은 문제의 본질은 우상 제물이 아니라 사랑의 문제임을 깨우쳐 주었던 것입니다. 이는 교회가 한 하나님, 한 예수님, 한 믿음과 성령을 따라 이루어진 사랑의 공동체라는 사실에 바탕을 두고 있습니다. 내가 괜찮다고 마음대로 행동하는 것이 아니라, 나의 행동이나 말에 양심이 상처를 입게 될지도 모를 연약한 자에 대한 배려, 이것이 참된 교회의 모습이라고 사도 바울은 생각했던 것입니다.
그러므로 교회의 참된 모습은 성도들을 아량으로 덮어 주고, 사랑으로 감싸 주는 것입니다. 참된 사랑은 서로 섬기는 봉사의 문을 통해서만 들어갈 수가 있습니다. 주님께서도 먼저 제자들의 발을 씻겨 주시고 피차에 발을 씻겨 주는 겸허한 자세, 남을 존경하는 마음을 가질 것을 제자들에게 권고했던 것처럼, 그러한 진실된 사랑이 없으면 그것이 바로 무서운 죄가 됩니다. 사랑은 단순히 주는 것이며, 나의 희생을 통해서만 싹트는 것입니다. 하나님께서는 당신의 아들을 죽이기까지 해 가면서 우리를 구원해 주심으로 당신의 사랑을 확증시켜 주셨다는 사실(롬5:8, 8:32)을 상기시킴으로, 연약한 자에 대한 배려의 필요성을 일깨워 주셨던 것입니다.
2. 교회는 하나님의 몸입니다.
사도 바울은 고린도 교회의 우상 제물의 논쟁에 개입하면서 그리스도의 십자가를 상기시켰습니다. 예수님은 약한 신자를 위해 죽으셨는데, 왜 너희들은 약한 신자들을 짓밟고 그들의 양심을 상하게 하느냐’는 것입니다. 이는 교회가 하나님의 몸이라는 사실에 바탕을 두고 있습니다. 예수님의 십자가 구속을 통해, 이제 인류는 하나님의 몸이요, 그분은 우리의 머리가 되셨습니다. 한 지체가 고통을 당하면 모든 지체가 함께 고통을 겪고, 한 지체가 영광을 받으면 모든 지체가 함께 기뻐하듯이, 우리는 그리스도의 몸이며 한 사람 한 사람은 그분의 지체이므로, 연결된 교회요, 한 몸 된 교회입니다. 그러므로 서로 위로하고 함께 아파하고 더불어 기뻐하는 교회, 이것이 사도 바울이 역설하고 있는 교회의 참모습이 아닙니까?(고전 12:12-17). 그래서 사도 바울은 우상 제물을 먹는 것이 초신자들에게 걸림이 된다면 자신은 평생 고기를 먹지 않겠다고 선언하고 있습니다(롬 14:13-15). 그러면서 “만일 식물을 인하여 네 형제가 근심하게 되면 이는 네가 사랑으로 행치 아니함이라. 그리스도께서 대신하여 죽으신 형제를 네 식물로 망케 하지 말라”(롬 14:15)라고 경고하고 있습니다.
3. 교회는 한 멍에를 맨 공동체입니다.
소가 멍에를 메듯, 교회는 함께 짐을 짊어지고 가는 공동체입니다. 서로의 짐이 따로 있는 게 아닙니다. 갈 5:2 말씀을 볼 때 “너희가 짐을 서로 지라 그리하면 그리스도의 법을 성취하리라” 하셨던 것처럼, 함께 그리스도의 십자가의 짐을 짊어지고 달려가는 공동체가 교회인 것입니다. 예수님께서는 마 11:28-30에서 “수고하고 무거운 짐 진 자들아 다 내게로 오라”라고 말씀하셨습니다. 우리가 예수님께로 나아가면 그분은 우리의 짐을 벗겨 주시고, 대신 가볍고 지기에 쉬운 주님의 멍에를 주십니다. 그러므로 교회는 주님의 멍에를 함께 지고 가는 사랑의 공동체입니다.
좋은 교회란 차별이 없는 교회로서, 예수께서 주신 멍에를 기쁨으로 함께 지고 가는 교회입니다. 이를 깨달을 때 교인들 서로 간에 “더불어 화평함과 거룩함”(히12:14)을 좇게 됩니다. 나아가, 오직 서로 종노릇하며 자기의 몸과 같이 이웃을 사랑하는 마음이 생기게 됩니다(갈5:13). 우리가 “자유를 위하여 부르심을 입었으나 그러나 그 자유로 육체의 기회를 삼지 말고 오직 사랑으로 서로 종노릇하라”라는 사도 바울의 권면처럼 서로 종노릇하는 교회, 이것이 같은 멍에를 매고 가는 교회의 모습입니다.
결론
우상 제물의 문제를 통해 사도 바울은 우리에게 교회의 참된 본질에 대해 증거해 주고 있습니다. 사랑의 끈으로 묶인 하나의 가족 공동체요, 한 몸으로 연결된 사랑의 공동체이며, 같은 짐을 짊어지고 가는 사역공동체가 바로 교회입니다. 이를 깨달을 때, 한 교회 안에서 상대방을 무시하거나 시험에 들게 하여 양심을 상하게 하는 일이 없습니다.
