What is the treasure of the saints?
When Israel abandoned God and tried to rely on Assyria or Egypt, God urged them through the Prophet Isaiah not to be deceived by them but to trust and rely only on God. However, Israel lived a double life of faith where they claimed to believe in God on one hand, but were hesitant and indecisive on the other hand because they were intertwined with worldly greed and thoughts. At such time, God rebuked them by saying, “Isn’t the fear of the LORD the key to this treasure?” and urged them to put aside the worldly greed and thoughts.
I. The abundance of faith is the treasure of true saints.
The heart of a farmer is on sowing and cultivating the seeds diligently and reaping the fruits of a good harvest. If there is a famine because of a drought or a typhoon even though the farmer has put in a lot of efforts and a hard labor, he is bound to become poor. This is called “deprivation.” If we are deprived not only in material but are faithless in spirit with a famine of the Word, we are in the state of ‘deprivation.’ When that happens, complaints and grievances come out of the mouths of the saints, and they have conflicts with their neighbors over petty things. Thus, the blessed saints with treasures should have a good harvest both physically and spiritually. King David decided to live for God all his life, and even planned his national budget to work for the Lord until he died. He made not only a budget that contained the nation’s financial plan, but also a budget of life as a king and as a ‘saint standing before God,’ so that he could bear abundant fruits before the Lord and not waste any in vain. Such richness of David’s faith was manifested as ‘thanksgiving.’ This passage, “Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his kindness endures forever” (Ps 118:1) is also a confession of a true saint who has experienced a good harvest both spiritually and physically. We too must devise a budget with ‘faith’ like David and become a profitable person to have abundant harvest both spiritually and physically.
II. Fearing and honoring God is the treasure of the saints.
Today’s Scripture text, Isa 33, contains the reproach of God toward Assyria. They excel in deceiving others. They mistreated and deceived the small nation of Israel but lied and said Israel mistreated and deceived them. Tod this, Israel turned to God for grace. God then promises to be our salvation in times of trouble, to judge those who deceived us with lies and tried to bog us down into a pit so that He will give us peace to our days. However, what is amazing is the fact that when the Assyrians’ mistreatment ceases, they will be mistreated; and when the Assyrians’ deception ceases, people will deceive them. Hence, there is no need to fear them or envy them. God will hold onto Israel and guides them to understand His will with wisdom that no one else knows. Now, ‘Your Times’ will come as a result. When the v6 of today’s Scripture text says, ‘your times,’ He refers to the time of each oneself who is living in faith now. Even though we were mistreated and deceived by the strong nation of Assyria, God said to us that we will be abundant with ‘peace, salvation, wisdom, and knowledge.’ All these blessings were not acquired by our own strength. They were freely given to us by God. Hence, because God will pour all these blessings abundantly upon us when we fear and honor Him, it is the true treasure of the saints to fear and honor God. However, a conflict arises in the life of blessed saints when Satan sprinkles weeds. When those who rabble with Israel began to become greedy and confuse the saints, we become a complainer or a grumbler. When that happens, God will judge them with fire. When we look at Num 11:1-3, God sent fire and judged those who complained with wicked words at ‘Taberah’ and let it consume the outskirts of the camp; and the fire died down when the people cried out to Moses, and he prayed. Such greed and resentment are the first reason that shatters the treasure of the saints.
III. When there are no rabble among us, we become precious saints.
One of the reasons that the Israelites were judged by God for their grumbling was because there were the ‘rabble’ who lived among them. They are faithless that left Egypt with the Israelites (Exo 12:38).Their faithless complaints and grumbles quickly spread throughout Israel. Although God gave them manna daily and provided daily food to them, they rejected it and complained that there was no meat. That is why the Apostle Paul said, “Do not be yoked together with unbelievers” (2Cor 6:14). It is because one cannot understand the “righteousness of choice” if he does not understand the will of the Word or does not receive grace. Rather, the faith of believers is undermined by them. Because God knows and sees all these things, He tells us not to ‘intermingle’ (1Ki 9:3). The church becomes noisy if the rabbles are present. Neither individuals nor families can work, nor can they sleep properly. When we go out to evangelize, there will be no fruit unless we pray with one heart, without divisions or impurities. When there was Egypt-like elements or secular custom like Babylon are present, we will be destroyed. That is why God told us not to plant our field with two kinds of seed or wear clothing woven with two kinds of material (Lev 19:19). Such people are not able to see the land of Canaan even if they are standing in front of it.
Conclusion
In the last days, not only there are good fish caught in the net but bad fish as well (Mt 13:47-50). It is the grace of God to separate them. It is because we achieve the abundance of faith when we completely fear and honor God. Like today’s message, I sincerely hope that all of us will be blessed with precious faith by fearing and honoring only God.
성도의 보배가 무엇이냐?
이스라엘이 하나님을 떠나 앗수르나 애굽을 의지하려 할 때, 하나님은 이사야 선지자를 통해 그들에게 속지 말고 오직 하나님만을 믿고 의지할 것을 권면하셨습니다. 그러나 이스라엘은 한편으로는 하나님을 믿는다고 하면서도, 한편으로는 세상적인 욕심과 생각이 섞여 눈치를 보고 우물쭈물하는 이중적인 신앙생활을 하였습니다. 그러할 때, 하나님은 “여호와를 경외하는 것이야말로 너희의 진정한 보배가 아니냐?” 책망하시며 세상적인 욕심과 찌꺼기 같은 생각들을 내려놓으라고 말씀하고 계십니다.
1. 믿음의 풍년이 진정한 성도의 보배입니다.
농부의 마음은 열심히 씨를 뿌리고 가꿔서 풍년의 열매를 맺는 것입니다. 땀 흘리고 일했는데도 가뭄이 들거나 태풍이 불어 흉작이 되면 가난해질 수밖에 없습니다. 이를 한자어로 ‘궁핍’(窮乏)이라 합니다. 물질뿐만 아니라 영적으로도 믿음이 없고 말씀의 기근이 닥쳐오면 ‘빈궁할 궁(窮)’의 상태가 됩니다. 그러면 성도의 입에서도 불평불만이 나오고, 작은 일에도 이웃들과 싸우게 됩니다. 그러므로 보배를 가진 축복 된 성도는 영육 간에 풍년을 맞이해야 합니다.
다윗왕은 일평생 하나님 편에 살기로 작정하고, 나라의 예산을 세울 때도 죽을 때까지 주님을 위해서 일하기로 예산을 세웠습니다. 단순히 나라의 재정계획을 담은 예산뿐 아니라, 왕이자 ‘하나님 앞에 선 한 사람의 성도로서의 나’의 인생 예산을 세워, 헛된 일에 낭비함이 없이 주 앞에 풍년의 열매를 맺기 위한 계획을 세웠던 것입니다. 이러한 다윗의 믿음의 풍성함은 ‘감사’로 나타났습니다. “여호와께 감사하라 저는 선하시며 그 인자하심이 영원함이로다”(시 118:1)라는 말씀은 영육 간에 풍년을 맞이한 참성도의 고백이기도 합니다. 우리도 다윗처럼 ‘믿음으로’ 예산을 잘 세워서 영육 간에 풍년을 맞이하는 흑자 인생이 되어야 합니다.
2. 하나님을 경외하는 것이 성도의 보배입니다.
본문 이사야 33장의 말씀은 앗수르를 향한 하나님의 책망을 담고 있습니다. 그들은 속임수에 능한 자들입니다. 자신들이 작은 나라 이스라엘을 학대하며 속이고도, 오히려 이스라엘이 자신들을 학대하고 속였다고 거짓말을 하고 있습니다. 이에 이스라엘은 하나님께 의지하여 은혜 베풀어 주시기를 간구하고 있습니다. 환난 때에 우리의 구원이 되시고, 거짓으로 미혹하며 수렁에 빠뜨리고자 하는 자들을 심판하셔서 우리 시대에 평안함을 주시겠다고 약속하고 있습니다.
그런데 놀라운 것은, 저들의 학대가 그치면 이제 그들이 학대를 받고, 저들의 속임이 그치면 사람들이 저들을 속이겠다는 것입니다. 그러니 그들을 절대 두려워하지 말고, 또 부러워할 필요도 없다는 것입니다. 하나님께서 이스라엘을 붙잡아 주셔서, 남이 알지 못하는 지혜로 하나님의 뜻을 깨달을 수 있도록 인도해 주십니다. 그 결과로 이제 ‘나의 시대’가 옵니다. 본문 6절에서 ‘너의 시대에’라고 말씀하신 것은 지금 신앙생활을 하는 ‘각자 나’ 자신의 시대를 가리킵니다. 강대국 앗수르에게 학대와 속임을 당하였지만, 하나님께서 우리에게 ‘평안함과 구원과 지혜와 지식’이 풍성하게 된다고 말씀하십니다. 이 모든 축복은 내 힘으로 얻은 것이 아닙니다. 하나님께서 값없이 주신 것입니다. 그러므로 하나님만을 경외하면 하나님께서 이 모든 것으로 충만히 부어주시기 때문에, 여호와를 경외하는 것이 성도의 참보배입니다.
그러나 이런 축복받은 성도의 삶 속에 사단이 가라지를 뿌리므로 갈등이 생깁니다. 섞여 사는 무리가 탐심을 품어 성도들을 미혹할 때, 원망과 불평의 사람으로 변질합니다. 그러할 때, 하나님은 불로 그들을 심판하십니다. 민 11:1-3에 보면, ‘다베라’에서 악한 말로 하나님을 원망하는 백성들의 진 끝을 불을 보내어 심판하셨고, 모세가 기도할 때 불이 꺼졌습니다. 이와 같은 탐욕과 원망이야말로 보배를 깨뜨리는 첫 번째 원인입니다.
3. 섞여 사는 것이 없어야 보배로운 성도입니다.
이스라엘 백성들이 원망으로 하나님께 심판받게 된 원인 중 하나는 바로 ‘섞여 사는 무리’였습니다. 그들은 믿음 없는 자로, 이스라엘 무리에 섞여 애굽을 나온 중다한 잡족입니다(출 12:38). 믿음 없는 그들의 불평과 원망이 삽시간에 이스라엘에 퍼졌습니다. 하나님께서 매일 만나를 내려 주시고 일용할 양식을 공급해 주시는데도 싫다 하고, 고기가 없다며 원망했던 것입니다.
그래서 사도 바울은 “너희는 믿지 않는 자와 멍에를 같이 하지 말라”(고후 6:14)라고 하였습니다. 왜냐하면, 말씀의 뜻을 깨닫지 못하고 은혜를 받지 못하면 ‘선택의 의’를 알지 못하기 때문입니다. 오히려 그들에 의해 믿는 자들의 믿음이 훼손됩니다. 하나님은 이 모든 것을 다 아시고, 보시는 분이기에 ‘섞여 살지 말라’고 하십니다(왕상 9:3).
교회도 섞여 살면 시끄럽습니다. 개인이나 가정도 도무지 일할 수 없고, 잠을 제대로 잘 수 없습니다. 전도하러 나갈 때도 섞임이 없고 하나 된 마음으로 기도하고 나가야 열매를 맺습니다. 애굽적 요소가 섞이고 바벨론 같은 세속이 깃들어 있을 때 멸망하고 맙니다. 그래서 하나님은 옷감을 짤 때도 두 가지 실로 짠 옷을 입지 말고, 한 고랑에 두 종자를 뿌리지 말라고 하셨습니다(레 19:19). 그러한 자는 눈앞에 가나안 땅이 있다고 해도 볼 수가 없습니다.
결론
마지막 때는 그물에 좋은 고기만 있는 것이 아니라, 나쁜 고기도 걸린다고 하였습니다(마 13:47-50). 이 섞인 것을 갈라내는 것이 하나님의 은혜입니다. 온전히 하나님만을 경외하여 믿음의 풍요를 이룰 수 있기 때문입니다. 오늘 말씀과 같이 오직 하나님만을 경외하여, 보배로운 믿음의 축복을 받는 성도님들이 되시기 바랍니다.
