The miracle of just barely a handful of food
We are now welcoming the Thanksgiving Lord’s Day of 2022. On this Thanksgiving, we are
reminded how hopeful faith in the midst of despair becomes a great thanksgiving through an
example of “thankfulness” shown by the widow of Zarephath. Every Thanksgiving Day is a day
that we give thanks to God for pouring upon us to this date His grace, love, sunlight, moonlight,
wind, and air, and realizing all of which are from God. However, if there is anyone who is
celebrating this Thanksgiving Day with worries instead of giving thanks first, I sincerely hope
that he will have a wonderful Thanksgiving Day while experiencing an amazing miracle shown
through the image of the widow of Zarephath.
I. The widow of Zarephath lived an active life.
The man of God, Elijah’s command to this poor widow who had only one meal left which is the
last meal before she and her son die, seemed too harsh. “Give me that food first!” The Prophet
Elijah’s command was so self-righteous. However, the widow of Zarephath did not hesitate. She
displayed an active life of trusting the Word and immediately obeyed the command of the
Prophet Elijah although it was difficult for her to understand. Her heart overpowered all of
Elijah’s self-righteous act. While trusting in God’s providence and Will, she practiced
“obedience” by gathering the last flour to make a loaf of bread and giving it to the Prophet
Elijah. As a result, the widow of Zarephath’s handful of food became a blessed food that lasted
copiously through three years and six months of drought. No, if we were to count the crops from
the following year’s harvest, God granted grace for more than four years. Through such active
life of faith of this widow of Zarephath, we realize that “thanksgiving should be our priority.”
When we give thanks first, God becomes our Master and takes care of us. When thanksgiving
becomes our priority, everything else becomes secondary. Like it is stated in Rom 8:18, our
present sufferings are “not comparable to the glory that will be revealed in us.” Isn’t this indeed
the faith of the widow of Zarephath as well as the blessing that was fulfilled in her household?
Giving first the last handful of food to a man of God may be a pain for a moment, but that faith
to “give thanks first” was later granted again as a tremendous blessing in the future. The faith of
Abraham was also active like the faith of the widow of Zarephath. Although he did not know
where he was going, he left as he fully trusted the Word of God! Because he immediately obeyed
and acted according to the Word, Abraham became the forefather of faith.
II. The widow of Zarephath lived a willing life of faith.
The following content is found among David’s prayers of repentance after his sin. “Restore to
me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me” (Ps 51:12). Like the
confession of David, the widow of Zarephath “willingly” offered a handful of food to the
Prophet Elijah. She did not complain, “Why among all people, should I serve the man of God?”
Even Jesus did not confront God, ‘why should I carry this cross?’ but willingly assumed and
walked along the path. This is the secret of faith that brings miracles. The miracle of the Five
loaves of bread and two fish in the field of Bethsaida was also possible because of Andrew who
had a willing faith. In order to test his disciples, Jesus commanded Philip and Andrew to prepare
food. At that time, Philip hesitated, “Do you think it is possible even with 200 denarii to feed
these people?” However, Andrew went through the crowd and brought before the Lord the ‘five
loaves of bread and two fish’ that a little child had brought. His attitude of faith was a faith that
actively acted to carry out the Lord’s command with an attitude of ‘this is my work,’ and the
faith that was willing to act.
III. The widow of Zarephath trusted the Word of promise.
By trusting and obeying the Word of promise of the Prophet Ep9iau, the widow of Zarephath
opened the ‘Gate of Thanksgiving.’ Because she trusted the Word, there were no complaints.
She did not make excuses or swayed when her son cried. We tend to get discouraged, grumble,
and go back and forth to gossip uselessly when we have no faith. Who would know that one can
be redeemed with one meal, a handful of food? However, the widow of Zarephath believed to
the end. The ‘end of man’ is the ‘beginning of God.’ Man’s despair will lead to God’s prosperity.
Because she realized the principle of this amazing miracle, the widow of Zarephath was able to
trust the Word of promise and quietly obeyed. On this Thanksgiving Day of 2022, we must have
the same faith as the widow of Zarephath to ponder deeply into the heart of God. This means to
act and judge according to the Lord’s thoughts and His Will and not according to our thoughts. If
you have enough flour and oil to make just one meal, that is it. Who would you give it to? You
are not able to add more or take away. However, our God makes things disappear and also can
create from nothing. Hence, I would like all of you to believe that great miracles will be
unfolded when you plant God’s power and Will instead of our convictions, thoughts, and
principles.
Conclusion
The Kingdom of God is a heaven of thanksgiving and a place filled with the words
of thanks. Thus, all we have to do when we go to heaven is to give thanks to God. The widow of
Zarephath made a remarkable dedication in the midst of her situation far worse than we were.
She trusted the promise of God without a doubt. As we celebrate Thanksgiving Day this year, I
sincerely hope that all of us will have an active faith, an obedient faith, and the faith to trust in
the promise like the widow of Zarephath.
겨우 한 움큼 양식의 기적
2022년도 추수감사 주일을 맞이했습니다. 금년 추수감사절을 맞아 우리는 사르밧 과부가 보여 주었던 ‘감사’의 모범을 통해, 절망 가운데서도 소망의 믿음이 얼마나 큰 감사가 되는지 깨닫게 됩니다. 해마다 추수감사절은, 오늘날까지 우리에게 베풀어 주신 하나님의 은혜와 사랑, 햇빛과 달빛과 바람과 공기, 이 모든 것이 하나님으로부터 말미암은 것인 줄 믿고 감사를 드리는 것입니다. 그런데도 감사보다 걱정이 앞서는 가운데 추수감사절을 맞이하는 분이 있다면, 사르밧 과부의 모습을 통해 깨닫는 가운데 놀라운 기적을 맛보는 감사절이 되기를 바라겠습니다.
1. 사르밧 과부는 행동하는 삶을 살았습니다.
한 끼밖에 남지 않은 식량, 마지막으로 아들과 함께 그 양식을 먹고 죽기로 결심한 불쌍한 과부에게 찾아오신 하나님의 사람 엘리야의 명령은 너무도 냉혹해 보였습니다. “그 양식 나한테 먼저 주시오!” 엘리야 선지자의 명령은 너무나도 독선적이었습니다. 그러나 사르밧 과부는 주저하지 않았습니다. 엘리야 선지자의 명령을 이해하기 어려웠지만 그 말씀을 믿고 곧바로 그 말씀에 순종하는 행동적인 삶의 모습을 보여 주었던 것입니다. 그녀의 마음은 엘리야의 독선적인 태도를 다 물리쳤습니다. 하나님의 섭리와 뜻을 믿으며 마지막 밀가루를 모아 떡을 만들어 엘리야 선지자에게 드리는 ‘순종’을 실천했습니다.
그 결과로, 사르밧 과부의 한 움큼의 식량이 3년 6개월의 가뭄 기간을 넉넉히 이길 수 있는 축복의 양식으로 바뀌었습니다. 아니, 다음 해 농사의 수확을 얻기까지 계산한다면 무려 4년이 넘는 기간 동안 하나님께서 은혜를 베풀어 주신 것입니다. 이러한 사르밧 과부의 행동하는 믿음의 삶을 통해 ‘감사가 우선’이라는 것을 깨닫게 됩니다. 감사가 우선일 때 하나님께서 주인이 되어 내 일을 주관해 주십니다. 감사가 우선일 때 그 밖의 모든 것은 차선입니다.
롬 8:18 말씀처럼 “현재의 고난은 장차 우리에게 나타날 영광과 족히 비교할 수” 없습니다. 바로 사르밧 과부의 믿음이요, 그의 가정에 실현된 축복이 아닙니까? 마지막 한 움큼의 양식을 먼저 하나님의 사람에게 드리는 것이 순간 고통이 되지만, 그러나 먼저 ‘감사’하는 그 믿음은 미래에 엄청난 축복으로 다시 주어졌습니다. 아브라함의 신앙 또한 사르밧 과부처럼 행동하는 신앙이었습니다. 갈 바를 알지 못했지만 말씀을 믿고 떠나는 삶! 그 말씀 앞에 즉각적으로 순종하고 행동한 아브라함이었기에 믿음의 조상이 되었던 것입니다.
2. 사르밧 과부는 자원하는 신앙의 삶을 살았습니다.
다윗이 범죄한 후 회개의 기도를 올리던 내용 중에 다음과 같은 내용이 나옵니다. “주의 구원의 즐거움을 내게 회복시키시고 자원하는 심령을 주사 나를 붙드소서”(시51:12). 이러한 다윗의 고백처럼, 사르밧 과부도 ‘자원하는’ 마음으로 엘리야 선지자에게 한 움큼의 양식을 바쳤던 것입니다. 그녀는 “많은 사람 가운데 하필 왜 내가 하나님의 사람을 공궤해야 되느냐”고 불평하지 않았습니다. 예수께서도 ‘내가 왜 십자가를 짊어져야 하느냐’고 하나님께 따지지 않고 그 길을 기꺼이 자원하여 달려갔습니다. 이것이 기적을 가져오는 신앙의 비결입니다.
벳세다 들판에서의 오병이어의 기적도 자원하는 신앙을 가진 안드레가 있었기에 가능했습니다. 예수께서 제자들을 시험하시기 위해 빌립과 안드레에게 양식을 준비할 것을 명령했습니다. 그때 빌립은 “200데나리온이 있은들 먹이겠습니까?” 하고 주저했습니다. 그러나 안드레는 군중 속을 다니면서 어린아이가 가지고 온 ‘오병이어’를 받아 주님 앞에 가지고 나왔습니다. 그의 신앙의 자세는 ‘이 일이 바로 내 일이구나’ 하는 자세로 주님의 명령을 실행하기 위해 적극적으로 행동하는 신앙이었고, 자원하는 심령으로 행하고자 하는 신앙이었습니다.
3. 사르밧 과부는 약속의 말씀을 믿었습니다.
사르밧 과부는 엘리야 선지자의 약속의 말씀을 믿고 순종함으로써 감사의 문을 열었습니다. 말씀을 믿었기에 불평이 없었습니다. 핑계를 대지도 않았고 아이가 울어도 아랑곳하지 않았습니다. 믿음이 없으면 낙심하고, 불평하고, 여기저기 왔다 갔다 하며 쓸데없는 말만 하기 일쑤입니다. 한 끼 남은 식량으로 속량한다는 것을 누가 알겠습니까? 그러나 사르밧 과부는 끝까지 믿었습니다. ‘사람의 끝은 하나님의 시작’입니다. 사람의 절망은 바로 하나님의 형통으로 이어지는 것입니다. 사르밧 과부는 이러한 놀라운 기적의 원리를 깨달았기에 약속의 말씀을 믿고 묵묵히 순종할 수 있었습니다.
2022년도 추수감사절, 우리는 사르밧 과부와 같은 믿음을 가지고 하나님의 깊은 사정을 헤아릴 줄 알아야 하겠습니다. 내 생각으로 일하고 판단하는 것이 아니고, 주님의 생각과 주님의 주관대로 판단하는 것입니다. 만일 한 끼분의 밀가루와 기름이 있다면 그것으로 끝입니다. 그것을 누구에게 줄 수 있겠습니까? 더할 수도, 덜할 수도 없는 그러한 형편입니다. 그러나 우리 하나님은 있는 데서 없게 하시고, 없는 데서 있게 하시는 분입니다. 따라서 우리의 소신과 생각과 주관 대신에 하나님의 능력과 주관을 심어 놓을 때 큰 기적의 역사가 일어난다는 것을 믿으시기 바랍니다.
결론
천국은 감사의 천국이고, 감사의 언어가 충만한 곳입니다. 그러므로 우리가 천국에 가서 할 것은 오직 하나님 앞에 감사하는 것뿐입니다. 사르밧 과부는 우리보다 더 가난하고 어려운 형편 가운데서도 놀라운 헌신을 했습니다. 하나님의 약속을 의심 없이 믿었습니다. 올해 추수감사절을 맞아 성도님들도 사르밧 과부처럼 행동하는 믿음, 순종하는 믿음, 약속을 믿는 믿음을 갖기를 바라겠습니다.
